The blessed Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia have long been revered as patrons of marriage. It's no secret that the path to family happiness is sometimes thorny and difficult. By their example, the princes of Murom showed Christians an example of self-sacrifice, humility and fidelity.
Since then, believers who have lost harmony in their relationships with their loved ones have resorted to the prayerful help of the heavenly patrons of family and marriage. The best remedy in such cases is considered to be reading the akathist to Peter and Fevronia.
The meaning of saints in Orthodoxy
Holiness is a complex concept. In Orthodoxy it is believed that only God has this property. A person can become a saint only through his closeness to God, an impeccably righteous lifestyle and a tireless struggle against sin. Then he receives Divine grace and can be canonized by the church as a saint.
A holy person has a constant connection with God. He fulfills all the commandments, not expecting a reward for it, but simply because he cannot live otherwise. Murom Saints Peter and Fevronia have a special place in the pantheon. They represent true love and a strong family. Believers often pray at their icon for family happiness.
The history of the appearance of the akathist
Peter and Fevronia are locally revered Orthodox saints. This means that by definition they do not have church-wide veneration. But they enjoy such great popular love that the day of their memory (July 8) is even timed to coincide with an all-Russian holiday - the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.
There is no mention of the Murom prince Peter in the chronicles, but he, along with his wife, was canonized in 1547, and soon after this the famous “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom” was written, based on folk tales.
The Tale says that Prince Peter entered into battle with a serpent who was seducing the wife of his brother Paul. The prince won, but the snake's blood splashed on him caused leprosy. Peter unsuccessfully searched for a doctor, but no one could cure the terrible disease.
Once in a dream he had a vision that healing would be brought by the Ryazan girl Fevronia, the daughter of a wild honey collector. The prince went to the place he saw in a dream, and really met Fevronia there. Peter promised to take her as his wife if she cured him, and the girl cured severe leprosy. But Fevronia was a commoner, so the prince, fearing the indignation of the boyars, broke his promise and left.
Soon the illness returned with renewed vigor, and he again had to ask Fevronia for help. This time the vow was fulfilled, and Fevronia became a princess. This angered the Murom boyars, and the couple went into exile. A bloody struggle for the throne began in the city, and the boyars had to ask them to return.
The pious spouses justly ruled Murom for many years and won the people's love. In their declining years they accepted monasticism and new names: David and Euphrosyne. They lived in different monasteries, but they prayed tirelessly that God would allow them to die on the same day. They also bequeathed that their bodies should be buried in a common tomb. This tomb was prepared during their lifetime. It was carved from one stone, and a thin partition was made in it.
When the time came, the pious spouses died on the same day, but the monks broke their will and buried them in their monasteries. The next day a miracle happened: the bodies of the spouses ended up in their common tomb, as they had wished.
In 1553, by order of Ivan the Terrible, a cathedral church was erected over the relics of the saints. During the Soviet years, the peace of the saints was disturbed, and their relics were transferred to the museum. At the end of the last century, the revival of Russian Orthodoxy began, and today the relics are in the Murom Holy Trinity Monastery, where everyone can venerate them.
Prayers to the Muromskys
It is surprising that despite the popularity of the blessed princes of Murom, there was no official prayer to them aimed at resolving family troubles until the 21st century. Only on May 29, 2013, at a meeting of the Holy Synod, the text of the prayer was approved.
About saving marriage
First of all, they resort to their help at moments when discord begins in the family. The former love disappears somewhere, the spiritual connection is lost, and there is no understanding between the spouses. When quarrels and disagreements come to the fore and become commonplace. And in order to reverse the current situation, believers resort to prayer.
On the challenge of divorce
It also happens that a family is on the verge of collapse. It seems that divorce is the only right solution. As the people say: “Out of sight, out of mind.” There's no need to rush. It is always easier to destroy than to build. For those who are standing at the edge, but the old feelings are still warm in the soul, there is the following prayer.
Other prayers
Also, the pious princes of Murom are asked to conceive children. There are many known cases where, after a pilgrimage to the shrine with the incorruptible relics of a married couple and fervent prayer, childless couples became happy parents.
Prayers also help those who suffer from a serious illness. There are documented facts of healing of believers who flow to the help of the righteous couple.
How to read correctly
The Akathist to Peter and Fevronia can be read as soon as the heartfelt need for it is felt. But most often believers turn to him in the following situations:
- before marriage;
- those wishing to have a child;
- while searching for your love;
- request for health;
- during family troubles.
Before you start for the first time, you need to turn to your priest for a blessing. Reading can only be done while standing, and all those praying must stand. Exceptions are made only for patients - they are allowed to sit (or even lie down if the reading takes place at home or in a hospital ward).
Before you start reading, you need to get into a prayerful mood, take your mind off the hustle and bustle of home and work. Thoughts must be pure. Reading can take place in front of icons or simply while standing at the window. Reading order:
- prayer to the Holy Spirit;
- “Our Father” three times;
- initial prayer with bows;
- the akathist himself;
- The 13th kontakion must be read three times in a row;
- 1st Ikos;
- 1st kontakion;
- at the end of the akathist you can add your prayer request, ending it with the words: “Thy will be done, Lord, and not mine,” because a person cannot know whether what he so earnestly asks for is useful to him;
- "It's worthy to eat."
The Akathist can be included in the complex of morning and evening prayers. In this case, the prayers are read in the usual order, and before the prayer “It is worthy to eat,” the akathist itself is read.
Meanings of the akathist to the saints
Unfortunately, in our age of religious illiteracy, the relationship of most parishioners with God comes down to the principle “you give me, I give you.” Such a person, upon entering the temple, considers it his duty to light as many candles as possible at the “right” icon and forgets about the most important thing - communication with the Creator. The very concept of prayer is devalued, and God's saints are given the role of certain intermediaries between petitioners and the Creator.
Akathist is a special type of prayer. The hymn has everything: a biography of the righteous man, a memory of his Christian deeds, his praise and glorification of the Lord.
The hymn to pious spouses was no exception. According to church canons, it includes moments from the lives of the reverend princes. For example, Kontakion 3 describes the feat of Peter, who decided to abdicate the throne in order to avoid the fate of an oathbreaker and adulterer. This shows an example of marital love and fidelity.
The hymn ends with the praise of God's saints and a simultaneous request for their prayerful intercession for the one asking before the Heavenly Father.
Why do they read?
Those who want to meet true love and be united in sacred marriage resort to reading the akathist.
Prayer also helps:
- For those who have already found their soul mate, but jealousy, misunderstanding and resentment have settled in the heart of one or both spouses.
- Childless couples ask for a blessing for the birth of children through the akathist.
- For parents who are experiencing a breakdown in communication with their children, reading the hymn miraculously helps to establish relationships and find a common language with their children.
Petitioners in an endless series go to the relics of God's saints in the Holy Trinity Monastery in the city of Murom.
After the end of the liturgy, pilgrims go to the shrine with the incorruptible remains of the righteous.
As a result, many actually get what they ask for:
- singles get married;
- those who left return to the family;
- peace and tranquility settle in the house;
- Long-awaited babies are born;
- the younger generation is coming to their senses.
Reading the prayer can be done at home or in church. Usually the akathist is part of the prayer service. This type of worship takes place in the temple and is performed by the priest together with the parishioners.
Reading rules
There are several rules observed by believers when they read the akathist.
Basic recommendations:
- First of all, it is appropriate to find out about those to whom you are making a request. To do this, it is advisable to study the lives of pious spouses.
- The akathist is read twice a day - in the morning and evening hours. Before doing this, it is appropriate to read the prayer rule according to the time of day. After the initial prayers, you can begin the akathist, ending with the prayer “It is worthy to eat.”
- You should read while standing. It is wonderful if the hymn is recited directly in front of the icons with the faces of the noble princes of Murom.
- Ideally, the words of the akathist should be memorized; sight reading is, of course, allowed, but with one condition: the prayer must come from the heart and not be a soulless reading.
- It does not matter whether the prayer is said loudly, in a whisper, or silently. The main thing is sincerity and purity of thoughts.
