Who is Saint Paraskeva Friday

The holy martyr Paraskeva was born in the city of Iconium, which is located in Asia Minor, in the 3rd century. Her mother and father firmly believed in One God. Every Friday they fasted, prayed and gave alms. They say that the All-Merciful gave them the fruit of love - a daughter - on the fifth day of the week. That’s why they gave her the name Pyatnitsa, or Paraskeva, as it sounds in Greek.

The girl’s parents honored the commandments of the Lord and raised their daughter in observance of the laws of God and love for Jesus Christ. The family was wealthy, but the parents left early for another world. The daughter continued to help the poor, prayed a lot, and led an ascetic lifestyle.

Paraskeva became famous for her feat in the name of the One God. At an adult age, divinely beautiful, stately and desired by many men, Paraskeva took a vow of virginity, declaring herself the bride of Christ. The young girl brought people the truth about the One God, read sermons about his teachings and instructions.

Not everyone supported the girl’s calls; there were opponents who grabbed her, beat her and put her in prison.

King Diocletian, who ruled in that area, was a pagan and exterminated everyone who prayed to the Lord. In 300, by his decree, a military commander arrived in the city of Iconium to punish on the spot those who were unfaithful to pagan idols. They reported to him that a girl preaching Christianity had been captured.

When Paraskeva was taken to trial, the Holy Spirit overshadowed her, the girl’s face shone like the sun. The military leader did not believe that such a beauty could go against the authorities. He offered to marry him, live in luxury and embrace paganism.

Paraskeva listened to many flattering speeches and promises. At that moment, when she was faced with a choice - to worship idols or remain faithful to Christ - she, without a moment’s hesitation, chose Jesus. Knowing how they would treat her, the girl was ready to make a sacrifice. They tortured her for a long time, hung her on a tree, tore off the skin and meat from her bones, then threw her into prison to die.

At midnight, the girl saw an angel descending to her, who, in the name of the All-Merciful God, healed the suffering Paraskeva. She became more beautiful than before, and the Celestial One left.

At sunrise she was brought back to trial. Everyone was surprised at how beautiful she was and decided that pagan idols had helped the girl. They took Paraskeva to a temple with many Gods and were ready to hear words of repentance from her. But Friday prayed to the Lord and with the power of the word, true faith, turned all the idols into dust. Many people saw how powerful the Christian God is.

Paraskeva's torment continued. A girl suspended from a tree was burned with fire, and she prayed to the Lord. The fire flared up with great force and burned many pagans without touching the saint. In the end, her head was cut off with a sword. The great martyr endured all the torment, pain and cruel death for the glory of God. Christians loyal to her buried the girl in her house.

How Saint Paraskeva was Worshiped in Rus'

In the peasant beliefs of the Russian North, Paraskeva is correlated with the semi-pagan goddess - the spinner Makosh. The image of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa was overshadowed by the cult of veneration of the archaic Mokosh; people also attributed to her an influence on fertility and marriages.

To this day, many rituals and customs are associated with the memory of the great martyr. In Ancient Rus', even temples and roadside chapels were called by the name Friday. People called the saint Paraskeva Friday, Pyatina or Petka. Icon painters depicted a tall ascetic with a stern expression on her face.

Icons of the righteous martyr, crowned with a radiant wreath, were revered and decorated with ribbons and monists. Rural workers brought flowers and fragrant herbs to her face, believing that it was Paraskeva who took care of the fields they sown and the preservation of livestock from death. On her memorable day, fruits were brought to temples for consecration, and then they were kept all year as sacred objects.

“Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, like Makosh and her mermaids, was associated with water; she patronizes holy healing springs and wells; “Pyatnitskie springs” are known. The complex of images of Paraskeva itself includes the concept of sacred earthly moisture. Moreover: the water of the earth and Paraskeva are identical - this is evidenced by the legends about the icons of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, who, unknown how and why, appeared in springs and reservoirs.”

The history of the appearance of the akathist

Akathists are hymns composed in honor of saints, glorifying their exploits, offering gratitude and appealing to the Higher powers for help in the earthly life of believers. They are sung while standing, which is why they are called “non-seated”.

The first is considered to be the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, which was compiled in the 7th century. It became the standard for the writing of all subsequent hymns. Author's texts are reviewed by the Spiritual Censorship Committee and approved by the Holy Synod.

The Akathist dedicated to the Great Martyr Paraskeva consists of 13 kontakia and 12 ikos. The solemn chant describes the earthly life of the saint and her great feat for the glory of Christ. On October 28 (November 10 according to the Julian calendar), the Christian Church honors the feat of the holy martyr Paraskeva, remembering her suffering and fortitude.

Reading the akathist to Paraskeva Friday helps:

The honest and all-loving purity of your heart, long-suffering Paraskeva, having preserved immaculately, you have been granted the angel of being your interlocutor. With them, singing the Trisagion to God in heaven, hear us, who honor you with faith and love and cry out to you in this praise on earth:

Rejoice, O young woman, presented by God the Father to be conformed in suffering to the image of His Son; Rejoice, strengthened by the Son of God for the deeds of suffering.

Rejoice, having sacredly observed the true faith in the Life-giving and Consubstantial Trinity; Rejoice, you who have well preserved holy chastity and virginal purity.

Rejoice, for you were joyfully taken away by the immortal Heavenly Bridegroom Christ; Rejoice, you who did not desire an earthly betrothed more than a heavenly nobility.

Rejoice, as the flower of purity, blooming in unfading glory; Rejoice, like a cran, fragrant to us with the stench of your virtues.

Rejoice, enjoying indescribable joy in the Heavenly Vertograd; Rejoice, you who are more red than the sons of men are comforted by your sight.

Rejoice, you who made your garments white in the blood of Lambs on earth; Rejoice, standing before the Lamb of God in heaven in the face of virgins.

Seeing the beauty of your face, holy martyr Paraskeva, people were amazed, looking at you, not knowing the beauty of your soul. We, remembering your virtues brighter than the sun, sing to the Lord, who gave you His grace: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

You appeared to be a receptacle of wisdom more than the mind of the worldly sages, an immaculate maiden, having turned away from love for the world from childhood and rejecting everything in the world, with all the fullness of your love you loved the Heavenly Bridegroom Christ, the King of Glory, to whom, like a faithful servant, you served apostolically in your life , living holy among the infidels and fearlessly preaching Christ God to them. We marvel at such your intelligence, and we sing this praise to you:

Rejoice, wise virgin of the Gospel, who walked in the light of faith and good deeds; Rejoice, O Christ the Lord, who loved God's power and God's wisdom above all else.

Rejoice, wiser than the wise men of this world; Rejoice, thou who was more understanding than the elder of idolaters.

Rejoice, enlightening the unfaithful with the light of faith; Rejoice, children of the Church of Christ who affirm the faith.

Rejoice, making the angelic countenance joyful with your love for Christ; Rejoice, you who drive away demonic wickedness with the weapon of the Cross of the Lord.

Rejoice, apostolic mouth that speaks God in preaching the faith; Rejoice, decoration of Christian virgins.

Rejoice, faithful prayer book to Christ God for our salvation; Rejoice, strong intercession and protection for all who mourn.

Rejoice, Paraskeva, all-praised bride of Christ.

Kontakion 3

Protected by the power of Christ, O all-glorious martyr Paraskeva, you did not neglect bodily illnesses, you wanted to fight a good fight. Armed with masculine meaning, you rejected feminine weakness, but strengthened by hope, you joyfully appeared at the judgment, where you clearly preached faith in the Divine Trinity, crying out to God: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Hearing from you, wise daughter, unrighteous judge, unheard words about your birth, as your parents were pious, reverent of the passions of Christ, on the famous day of your namesake he named you, Paraskeva, as an omen, as if you were to be a partaker of Christ’s passions. The wicked hegemon did not understand this, but spoke cold words and commanded that you be beaten with harsh sinews and that you were thrown half-dead into prison. But you, having valiantly endured the most severe torments, in prison, as if in the devil’s light, you cried out: “I will never be absent from You, Lord, but send me Your help and save me, great for the sake of Your mercy.” Moreover, pleasing you, we cry out to you like this:

Rejoice, kindly dove, freed from the temptations of the evil enemy; Rejoice, verbal lamb, who ran from the evil wolf tormentor to the good shepherd Christ God.

Rejoice, you who entered into the fold of the verbal sheep standing at His right hand; Rejoice, thou who flowth joyfully at the marriage of the Lamb.

Rejoice, for you are destined to eat eternal treasures; Rejoice, for you have been promised the bliss of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Rejoice, wise virgin of the Gospel, possessing a bright-burning lamp; Rejoice, you who have acquired great boldness towards Christ our God.

Rejoice, you who by your will lifted the good yoke of Christ upon you; Rejoice, having kept your heart pure from all flattery that harms your soul.

Rejoice, true participant of Christ's Passion; Rejoice, having received grace-filled help from Christ the Lord in your suffering.

Rejoice, Paraskeva, all-praised bride of Christ.

Kontakion 4

A storm of grave temptations has arisen against you, long-suffering Paraskeva; You, from your blood, diligently drank the cup of suffering, desiring for Christ, your wife, in the wake of the martyrdom, praiseworthy to the martyr, and like a good-voiced gusset, you sang a song to Christ God: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

Always having the Lord before your eyes, for the confession of faith with clubs you were mercilessly beaten by the tormentors, you rejoiced, the ever-memorable martyr Paraskeva, crying out: “Nothing will separate me from Your love, Christ,” and thus, struggling for the Glory of God, you pleased the Lord. Moreover, remembering your honest suffering, we call you with tenderness:

Rejoice, O all-pervading lamb, offered to the chief shepherd Christ like a fragrant sacrifice; Rejoice, you have presented your immaculate torment to the immortal Bridegroom Christ, like a most honorable vein.

Rejoice, pure young woman, who revealed the true confession of the Orthodox faith before the infidels; Rejoice, righteous accuser, who revealed the unrighteousness of the wicked judge.

Rejoice, for by you the wicked enemy has been put to shame, seeing himself defeated by a young maiden; Rejoice, for the powers of heaven rejoice over you, seeing you weak and young, defeating fierce tormentors.

Rejoice, pure dove and immaculate in heart; Rejoice, humble lamb, successfully becoming more honest and blessed than the passion of the Lord.

Rejoice, for you were offered to your Creator like fragrant incense; Rejoice, as the bright Sun of Truth looks upon you, shining from the grave for three days and strengthening you for the suffering feat.

Rejoice, for for your glorious suffering you have been vouchsafed to enter the palace of Christ, the King of Heaven; Rejoice, for there, together with the saints, you enjoy indescribable joy.

Rejoice, Paraskeva, all-praised bride of Christ.

Kontakion 5

You have passed away as a pious star in the world, glorious passion-bearer Paraskeva, as you preached faith in Christ to everyone. Having bravely endured much and fierce suffering, you put the tormentor to shame and you rose joyfully to Christ the Lord, like an unstoppable light. As soon as they come from the faces of the righteous, I will cry out: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

Seeing the powers of heaven in the suffering flesh of Paraskeva, strengthened by His strength, I said: “Behold, even the virgins on earth glorified the Lord!” People, possessed with trembling, horror and wonder, glorified songs: “Oh a miracle! The virgin conquers the enemy and prays to the merciful Lord for the salvation of the world.” For this reason, we, remembering your faith-filled courage, glorious martyr, please you, saying:

Rejoice, valiant passion-bearer, who labored in defense of the Orthodox faith; Rejoice, wise destroyer of the enemy’s slander.

Rejoice, teacher of the Iconian city; Rejoice, idolatrous vain flattery of the accuser.

Rejoice, thou who scentest the senses of the faithful with the stench of thy virtues; Rejoice, passionate stench of grace, given from above, driving away.

Rejoice, you who humbled the Greek idols like dust; Rejoice, by your exploits, like God, you have overthrown the ruler of darkness.

Rejoice, thou who art on high above those below, who have loved ascents in your heart; Rejoice, O Christ the Lord, Lover of mankind, who has given all to herself.

Rejoice, like the First Martyr Thekla, who enlightened many people with the word of God; Rejoice, you who led the unfaithful to the Divine faith.

Rejoice, Paraskeva, all-praised bride of Christ.

Kontakion 6

You, the valiant martyr Paraskeva, showed yourself to be a preacher of miracles and the glory of God, after the glorious healing in prison, given to you by Christ the Lord. Sending prayers of thanksgiving to Him, we joyfully cry out: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

You shone like a luminous star, stained with drops of blood, and with Divine grace you drove away the darkness of godlessness, Martyr Paraskeva, enlightening the faithful who honor your valiant deeds. Moreover, praising you, we earnestly cry out to you:

Rejoice, God-wise virgin, community of Christ’s passion; Rejoice, in the prison of your existence, you were honored with an angelic visitation.

Rejoice, for the consolation of your illnesses you contemplated the instruments of Christ’s passions; Rejoice, O Honest Cross and crown of thorns of your incorruptible Bridegroom, Christ, who has seen.

Rejoice, you who bore the wounds of the Lord on your body; Rejoice, healed from all wounds by the Lord through an angel.

Rejoice, for the Lord also gave you strength and wisdom, which you were not able to resist all those who resist the truth; Rejoice, you who took away your bright robe from your blood.

Rejoice, for through you sinners are healed from many wounds; Rejoice, for through you those who call upon you receive health from various diseases with faith.

Rejoice, speedy bonds of sin for the resolute; Rejoice, faithful prayer book for all Christians before the throne of God.

Rejoice, Paraskeva, all-praised bride of Christ.

Kontakion 7

I want the insane tormentor hegemon to satisfy his desire and try again with affectionate words to you, holy martyr Paraskeva, from the true God to convert to idol worship; You, like a God-wise virgin, admonishing him about the vanity of idols, you said to him: “Show me, hegemon, the gods you think healed me from my wounds,” and at the behest of the tormentor, having come to the idol temple, you prayed to the one true God, from In His Holy Name all idols fell and crumbled into dust, in assurance that there is one God, glorified in the Holy Trinity, to Him, together with the holy angels, we cry out: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

A new display of inhumanity was the fury of the bestial tormentor, when he commanded you, holy martyr Paraskeva, to hang on a tree and scorch your virgin ribs with burning lights. We reverently remember this unnatural patience of yours, and bless you with our blessed praises:

Rejoice, you who endured manifold illnesses for the King Christ God; Rejoice, for even though you have suffered torment in the face of men, your hope of immortality is fulfilled.

Rejoice, for you were hanged on the tree for the sake of Christ, on the Crucified Cross, so that you were bound to the crown of incorruption from Him; Rejoice, for you were planed along the rib, for the sake of Jesus with a spear in the rib, so that you may enjoy His Heavenly Kingdom.

Rejoice, for you have kindled the fire of love for God in your heart; Rejoice, for for Him you were scorched with fiery lights.

Rejoice, the hardest adamant who showed itself in your patience; Rejoice, stronger than stone in your faith in Christ the Lord, remaining in unshakable courage.

Rejoice, for you are scorched by fire, for you have extinguished the natural flame with fiery wisdom; Rejoice, for having kept the unquenchable light of your soul, you have entered with Christ your Bridegroom into the palace of Heaven.

Rejoice, for having killed the demonic regiments with miraculous sparks of passion, you have painfully defeated; Rejoice, for through your suffering you brought many people to the knowledge of the true God.

Rejoice, Paraskeva, all-praised bride of Christ.

Kontakion 8

Seeing the strange and terrible suffering of the holy martyr Paraskeva, she was truly amazed: how young a girl is, in such a youthful body she courageously endures torment for Christ, tearfully filled with tenderness; Unfaithful, possessed by trembling and miraculous sparks scorched by the Angel, I run; We, glorifying God who is wondrous in the saints, cry out: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

All the Sweetest Jesus sweetness, all the desire was for you, holy martyr Paraskeva: sweet for His sake, you endured bitter torment, saying to the tormentor: “The wicked hegemon is an enemy, who raged against Christians: neither the kingdom was taken away from you, nor your city was destroyed, but you think of words to admonish me. I do not spare my flesh for my Christ’s sake, because He loves me: I will go to Him and be His bride. It is through the hands of my enemy that I will be saved and will give me eternal life.” Remembering your glorious words and the valiant deeds of your confession, we cry out to you:

Rejoice, thou who was not afraid of the malice of the infidels; Rejoice, you who did not serve more than the Creator.

Rejoice, having put on the spiritual armor of God’s grace in order to resist the enemy of God; Rejoice, you who did not worship the dumb and deaf idol in the idol’s temple.

Rejoice, in the name of the omnipotent Lord and through your prayer to Him, you crushed all the idols there; Rejoice, having abolished the demons of deceit by divine power.

Rejoice, thou who courageously conquered the torment of the tormentors with the Cross of the Lord, like a mighty weapon; Rejoice, you who brought the fiery scorching and burning of your virgin body into the stench of the world of Christ God.

Rejoice, thou who has preserved faith, hope and love for God; Rejoice, you who received the crown of victory from the hand of Christ the Giver of Life.

Rejoice, river filled with the grace of God with waters; Rejoice, source of seething outpouring of miracles.

Ikos 10

The wall was strong and unshakable in your confession of faith in the Triune God: for this reason you endured much painful suffering from the tormentor, and having ended your course well, you received a crown from Christ God, and you were honored with angelic ranks in Heaven. You, scorched by the lights, with your single prayer to the omnipotent Lord, you extinguished the natural fire, and with the same flame, miraculously kindled through the Angel of God, having burned the frantic lawless people, you led many people to the knowledge of the true God. You, for the glory of the Lord, having accepted the sword beheading of your head from the tormentors, you valiantly ended your suffering feat, ascending with your soul to Heaven, to the palace of your longed-for Bridegroom, Christ the King of Glory, who joyfully greeted you with this heavenly voice: “Rejoice, ye righteous, like the martyr Paraskeva crowned!” In the same way, today we greet you, long-suffering one, and, looking at your holy icon, we cry out to you with tenderness: all-honorable Paraskeva! How to read correctly

The spiritual life of believers consists of many components. Prayerful appeal occupies one of the main places in it. It helps to enter into dialogue with Higher powers, gain fortitude, survive difficulties, gain health, and strengthen faith. The rules for reading the akathist to the saint are simple:

  • You can read the akathist in the church, in front of the icon of Saint Paraskeva Friday. The most powerful effect on believers is the temple singing of the hymn on the day of her veneration.
  • It is permissible to offer prayer at home. It’s good if there is an icon of the Great Martyr. You need to light a candle in front of her and ask her relatives not to interfere. Pray while standing.
  • Incense or other church incense will help you get in the mood for prayer. You should calm your thoughts, leave doubts, open your heart to communicate with the Celestial. A good day to contact the saint will be Friday.
  • You need to pray sincerely, with great gratitude and humility.
  • You need to start reading the akathist in order - from the first kontakion and first ikos to the last kontakion. It is read three times, then the 1st ikos “By an honest angel” and the 1st kontakion “Chosen by God”, followed by a prayer.
