According to her prayers, Christ our God, save our souls.
What do the saints pray for and how does he help?
Paraskeva is a saint to whom our ancestors turned with prayers. At the dawn of Christianity, many worshiped the Slavic pagan goddess Mokosha, who was honored on Friday. Her place was taken by the Christian and Saint Paraskeva. As before, she was asked for help in love and family matters, and for a rich harvest. The ban on spinning on Fridays was associated with her name.
They prayed to the saint for health for themselves and their children. They turned to her in days of difficult trials. The Great Martyr was asked for intercession before the Savior and forgiveness of sins. Paraskeva of Iconium helped believers not to stray from the righteous path. Prayers to her strengthened faith in the Lord and gave strength to overcome all troubles and trials.

Translation: Having brought the all-holy and blameless torment, as a precious dowry, to the immortal Bridegroom Christ, you rejoiced the angelic assembly and defeated the demonic intrigues. Therefore, we honor you with faith, long-suffering martyr Paraskeva.
Life of Saint Paraskeva
The name Paraskeva has ancient Greek roots and is translated as “on the eve of Saturday.” The girl’s parents were wealthy people, but for a long time they did not have children and prayed for a child every Friday. In the Orthodox faith, Friday has a special meaning. It was on this day that Christ was crucified. When, by God's grace, a girl was born into the family, she was named Paraskeva.
The girl professed the Christian faith during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian against Orthodox people. When Paraskeva's parents died, she became a rich bride and many worthy men proposed marriage. But she chose the path of celibacy and called herself the bride of Christ.
For refusing to worship pagan idols, the girl was tied to a tree and tortured. Then she was thrown into prison, where a heavenly angel healed her body. When Eparch Aetius brought her to a pagan temple, an earthquake occurred and all the statues of the gods turned to dust. He assessed this as a magical effect and ordered the saint to be tied to a pole and burned with fire, but the flame turned against the pagans. Frightened by the loss of their influence, the eparch ordered her head to be cut off.
Paraskeva is depicted on icons as a tall girl, with light brown hair and a crown. In the left hand there is a scroll, and in the right hand there is a cross. People who were engaged in agricultural work greatly respected the saint and there was an image of her in every home. The image was decorated with ribbons, flowers, and fragrant herbs. On the day of her feast, Christians went to church and brought the fruits of their labors for consecration. It was customary to consecrate a piece of linen, which is why the saint is also called Paraskeva Linen.

The meaning of the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday in Orthodoxy
A young girl from the city of Iconium, who lived at the end of the 2nd and beginning of the 3rd century, went down in history thanks to her strong position in life and sincere faith in the Savior. She was born on Friday, on this day Christ died on the cross. The girl's parents were rich people and preached the teachings of Jesus. The daughter was named Paraskeva, which means “Friday” in Greek.
Her parents died early, the girl was left alone. She could have gotten married successfully, but she swore allegiance to the Heavenly Bridegroom. Paraskeva spent the inherited property to help the poor. She believed in Christ and preached Christianity in her city, which was banned in those days. Her country was ruled by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who worshiped pagan Gods. Christians were persecuted, tortured and executed.
Paraskeva of Iconium also suffered for her faith in the Savior. The Christian woman did not renounce Christ even under the most severe torture. The girl refused to worship the pagan Gods and did not want to marry her executioner Aetius, the ruler of Lycaonia. She was tortured for several days, her body was tortured. No amount of torture could break the will of the martyr. In the end, her head was cut off with a sword.
Paraskeva Friday is an example of self-sacrifice and sincere faith in the Savior. The young girl doomed herself to torment by not agreeing to renounce Christ. She entered heaven, the Kingdom of her Heavenly Bridegroom. Her feat remained forever in the memory of believers, glorifying her even many centuries after her death. They turn to the Great Martyr with prayers and ask for protection and intercession. The Church remembers the saint on November 10.

About the Great Martyr
The ancient story of the fate of the Orthodox martyr tells how the image of Saint Paraskeva helps. Church chronicles of life , written by Dmitry Rostovsky, brought to us the story of the righteous life of a girl who truly loved God and became a believer’s support and hope for happiness. In the old days, the face of Paraskeva, or, as it was called, the woman’s intercessor, hung in every house. People believed that it brings happiness and protects family well-being. So where does this saint come from and why does she have such an unusual name?
If suddenly you didn’t already know, then we advise you to read about the main commandment of Christianity.
Life of Paraskeva
Praskovya was born in the 2nd century, when Emperor Antoninus reigned in Rome, the center of paganism. The daughter was long-awaited in a noble family, since the young couple prayed for a long time that Heaven would send them the joy of conception. For several years, prayers to the Almighty were said every Friday. And the merciful Lord heard the suffering, sending them his help. The birth of the girl occurred on the sixth day of the week (the ancient Greeks considered Friday to be such a day). Trying to thank God, the parents gave the long-awaited child the Greek name Paraskeva, which translated meant Friday.
Mother and father could not be happier with their daughter. And she grew up to be a rare beauty. From infancy, the girl fervently prayed to God and had no thoughts of marriage in her heart. This upset the parents, but they did not dare to resist, because at all times they believed that the earthly path was destined from above and it is not for us to decide our destiny, but we only need to follow the command of the Lord. The girl did not seek to get married, spent a lot of time in prayer and took a vow of celibacy. She wanted to see only Jesus Christ as her only betrothed.
When her parents died, Paraskeva was left completely alone. She, having accepted their huge inheritance, became fabulously rich. The pious daughter did not boast of her property, but spent her money on helping the needy and enlightening the pagans. With this behavior she converted many to Orthodoxy . But there were also many envious people . They reported Paraskeva to Emperor Anthony, and he ordered the girl to be brought to him. With caresses and threats, he asked her to renounce the faith of Christ.
The girl amazed him with her beauty and calmness, a certain spiritual humility . She spoke to him quietly and kindly, and her eyes shone with joy. Paraskeva did not think of abandoning the faith of her father and mother. Then the king ordered to torture and cruelly punish the disobedient girl. She was forced to enter a cauldron of boiling water, she did so, but remained unharmed. Anthony released her, and after this miracle he believed in Orthodoxy. Since then, Saint Pyatina went through cities and lands , carrying with her the word of Christ.
Paraskeva traveled through Rome, Greece, Crimea and Turkey, preaching Christianity to different peoples. In cities where paganism ruled, the girl was subjected to severe trials. But she emerged from everywhere unscathed. And looking at such miraculous healings, many accepted Christ, forgetting about paganism. Only in one city, where a certain Tarasius ruled, did they not believe in her holiness. The monster ordered to cut off the sufferer's head. At that terrible moment, everyone heard the singing of Angels from Heaven. Thus took place the long-awaited reunion of Praskeva with the one to whom she so strove with her faith.
Holy image
Since time immemorial, the Holy Great Martyr has had many named images. In Rus' it was called Praskovya, Praskaveya, Pyatnitsa, Pyatina, Petnuya. In the calendar you can find her name, which is designated as “Saint Paraskeviya, named Friday.” The temple buildings erected in her honor were called Fridays. Since ancient times, the image of the martyr has been ranked among the patroness of girls, women and mothers who wish for a happy marriage.
It was in memory of Paraskev that the following commandments came to us:
- women were prohibited from cleaning and doing laundry on Fridays;
- men were forbidden to work with the land (plowing the field, cultivating plots, taking livestock to pasture).
On Fridays we went to church, baked pies and gathered for bachelorette parties, where we talked about grooms. And older women told unmarried girls about family life.
On many faces of Pyatina, Petnuya, Pyatnitsa are depicted in the form of a fair-haired maiden, in blue clothes, with a crown above her head. In her left hand, Saint Paraskeva holds a scroll with the prayer “Symbol of Faith,” and in her right hand she holds an Orthodox cross, symbolizing faith in Jesus Christ and reminding us of the suffering experienced in His name.
The relics of the holy great martyr are located in the Russian Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos. And in Crimea, on the land of the Toplovsky Monastery, there is a spring with living water that helps against diseases of the eyes and head. The governors keep the tradition that in 150−170. n. e. It was here that the venerable martyr suffered her last torment. At the moment of Paraskeva’s repose before the Almighty, the water that came out of the ground began to flow in that place, healing from diseases. An icon of Saint Paraskeva was also found here, which in 1778 was taken by Greek settlers to Mariupol, where it was kept in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin .
Help from the miraculous face
Orthodoxy does not prohibit marriage, but, on the contrary, approves and supports it. The Holy Book, the Bible, says that it is not good when a person is alone. Therefore, there is no need to be shy about making requests for a message of love and a successful marriage. There are many Christian saints to whom many girls go with this request. This:
- Mother of God.
- St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
- St. Andrew the First-Called.
- St. Great Martyr Catherine.
- St. Paraskeva Friday.
In our time, in moments of both despair and joy, Orthodox Christians say prayers at the image of the Great Martyr Paraskeva. This is a very strong icon. In their prayers, girls and women ask the saint for a quick marriage, for solutions to simple everyday needs. In popular belief, Pyatina is the patroness of the family hearth, taking care of girls, housewives, mothers, children and fathers of the family. The Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa does not refuse anyone.
What do they pray to Saint Praskovya for:
- about love;
- about the granting of health;
- about the birth of a child;
- protection from a rival;
- in healing mental illnesses;
- about a quick and successful marriage.
Many girls are quickly lucky and find family happiness. But what should those who can’t do it do? As they say, she is a beauty herself, and so smart, but her personal life is not going well. You need to turn to the image of Paraskeva with personal prayer for marriage. In churches, look for the relics of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. It is better to visit the temple in honor of the holy great martyr.
There is such a parish in Moscow. This is an Orthodox church of the Paraskeva-Pyatnitsky deanery, belonging to the Moscow city diocese. The place is located in Northern Butovo. Its address: Starokachalovskaya street, 8, building 1. Nearest metro station: Dmitry Donskoy Boulevard. If the train is traveling from the center, then the exit will be from the last car. The influence of prayer
A mother's prayer, pronounced from a pure heart, addressed to the Lord, the Mother of God or the saints, has enormous healing power. Such treatment, along with the love and care of the mother, can provide the child with invaluable assistance in the treatment of any disease, set him on the right path, help resolve important life issues and more.
It is good if the child also prays with his mother. Such prayers are said in a good mood, and not in anger. You cannot talk negatively about your child, much less curse him.
Praying for the health of her son or daughter, a loving mother calls upon the grace of God into their earthly life, which will certainly be the beginning of positive changes. It is the mother, who accompanies the child throughout his adult life, who is closely connected with him energetically and spiritually, so her prayer can raise even a seriously ill person to his feet. Often, in their prayers for health addressed to the Lord, mothers make a vow or promise Him something very personal and important.
A more complete prayer for health and recovery includes reading prayers, lighting candles in church and at home, bowing and making the sign of the cross, sprinkling with holy water and eating prosphora. All this will help the mother save her beloved child from fear, colds, infections, and help with bruises. If a child is very sick and for a long time, it is advised to order prayers for health in the church, submit notes for liturgies held in monasteries, and go to the relics of saints.
If the usual way of life of a family is disrupted, a child falls ill, the Orthodox Church invites believers to turn for healing not only to God or the Mother of God, but also to the patron saints, namely Mother Matrona, Ksenia of Petersburg, St. Nicholas, Luke Voino-Yasenetsky, St. Panteleimon .
Saints are able to intercede before God on behalf of mere mortals. The Virgin Mary is a caring mother and cares for all the children of God. Usually her images are located not only in temples, but also in the children's room or near the crib. The image of Mother Matrona, a famous holy righteous woman, who, being sick, took the suffering of others to heart and sought to help them, is also endowed with special power. During the life of Blessed Xenia, women brought their children to her to receive a blessing. Panteleimon in worldly life was a doctor, converted to Christianity and helped people get rid of illnesses. Icons of this heavenly healer can still be seen both in churches and in hospitals. Nicholas the Wonderworker has long protected children, especially obedient ones, giving them gifts and helping them recover.
Among the simple prayers that mothers read to ask for the health of their children, one can name “Our Father”, “The Ninetieth Psalm”, “Prayer to the Life-Giving Cross”, “Prayer to the Lord God for Children”. Any of the texts recognizes the greatness of the Lord or the saints, there are requests for forgiveness and mercy for children, giving them good health, protection from troubles and illnesses.
Prayer to the holy martyr Paraskeva Friday for a successful marriage
Even twenty years ago, the icon of Paraskeva Friday could be found in every village house. The holy martyr is considered the patroness of farmers, cattle breeders and people engaged in agriculture. Now the image of Paraskeva is found less frequently in home iconostasis, but it is still revered in peasant families.
It is believed that the saint protects livestock, protects crops from frost and drought, young girls pray to her for marriage, and family members pray to her to preserve peace and harmony in the house. Who is Paraskeva Pyatnitsa? What is she famous for?
Life of a saint
The chronicle tells us that in the 3rd century AD, on the territory of modern Turkey, a girl was born into a family of followers of the faith of Christ, named Paraskeva, which translated means “Friday.” The young woman lost her parents early, but inherited from them perseverance and humble adherence to the Orthodox faith.
The girl was distinguished by her beauty, but did not strive for marriage. To all proposals for marriage, she humbly replied that her only groom was Jesus Christ, and her only desire was to live her earthly life with dignity and unite with him in heaven.
Paraskeva inherited a small fortune from her parents, but considered it shameful to spend it on clothes and jewelry. Instead, she helped the poor, the suffering and the needy. Paraskeva herself dressed simply, considering her best adornment to be spiritual achievements, purity and humility.
Looking at her, many people turned to faith in Christ and began to follow his commandments.
At that time, the Roman Empire ruled, which brutally persecuted and executed everyone who, instead of bringing gifts to pagan idols, believed in the One Lord Jesus Christ.
Ruler Diocletian regularly sent punitive detachments to search for Christians. One of these detachments learned that in the city of Iconium there lives a certain Paraskeva, who not only prays to Jesus Christ, but also leads other people astray from the “true” path of idolatry and converts them to her faith. The soldiers immediately arrested the girl and brought her to Eparch Aetius, the governor of the emperor.
But in vain the ruler expected to see a creature broken by the sight of armed warriors! A fair-haired, modestly dressed girl appeared before him, whose beautiful face was illuminated by sincere faith in Christ. A joyful smile played on the lips of the captive in anticipation of an imminent meeting with her heavenly groom.
- It was in vain that Eparch Aetius frightened her with terrible torture, persuading her to bow to idols and become his wife.
- When the executioners tortured the young Christian woman, not a single moan escaped her lips, not a single plea for mercy, only Paraskeva silently prayed to the Lord for help in order to endure all the torment with dignity.
When the executioners reported to the ruler that the girl had lost consciousness and was dying, he ordered her to be thrown into prison to prolong her torment. At night, an angel appeared to the dying Paraskeva and healed the girl.
In the morning, the executioners saw a happy and healthy Paraskeva instead of a corpse, which they reported to Aetia. He again came to the girl and began to invite her to worship idols and reject the faith of Christ.
But the answer was again a refusal.
Then the ruler ordered Paraskeva to be burned with fire in the square near the pillory. The servants brought torches, but not a single flame could touch the girl's skin. People who saw this manifestation of Divine intercession themselves turned to the faith of Christ, rejecting false gods.
The eparch in anger ordered Paraskeva to be beheaded, so the Holy Martyr ended her earthly life, and her soul united in heaven with the Lord.
Veneration of the image of Paraskeva Friday in Rus'
The Saint's patience and humility were highly valued in Rus'. On the icon, Paraskeva is depicted with a scroll of the Creed in one hand and a cross, symbolizing her suffering and martyrdom for the faith, in the other.
The prayer to Paraskeva Pyatnitsa was offered before the start of spring sowing in the fields; religious processions were performed with her image during the death of livestock, during drought or prolonged rains.
It is believed that the Saint is the patron of all Orthodox Christians engaged in difficult peasant labor.
- After the harvest, on the day of remembrance of the Holy Martyr on November 10, the peasants gathered in the church, offered thanksgiving prayers and blessed the fruits of their labors, which they kept in the red corner all winter.
- To this day, the prayer to Paraskeva Friday for marriage, said by innocent girls, is the most effective assistant in creating a happy family.
