The book of Ermolai - Erasmus “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom”, along with “The Tale of Bygone Years”, is considered one of the best examples of ancient Russian creativity. It was written after the canonization of Saints Peter and Fevronia at the Moscow Council. The main characters of the story themselves supposedly lived in Murom and died in 1228. The full title of the work is “The Tale of the Lives of the New Saints, Miracle Workers of Murom, the Blessed and Reverend and Worshipful Prince Peter, named in the monastic rank of David, and his wife, the Blessed and Reverend and Praised Princess Fevronia, named in the monastic rank of Euphrosyne.”

The plot of “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom” briefly

In “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom” you can read about the events unfolding in the city of Murom. Prince Peter rules in this city. The devil ordered the winged serpent to fly to Peter's wife for fornication. The serpent appeared in front of everyone in the guise of Peter, and in front of his wife in its true guise. The prince's wife said that a snake had taken possession of her by force. But the prince did not know what to do. And he then ordered his wife to ask the serpent how to destroy him. By cunning, the woman asked the snake what his death would be like. The serpent assured that he would die from “Petrov’s shoulder and Agrikov’s sword.” The prince had a brother Peter, but no one knew where to get Agrikov’s sword.

The prince's brother loved to visit churches alone. During one of these campaigns, a youth approached him and offered to show Agrikov a sword. Peter did not hesitate and took it out of the altar wall between the slabs. He told his brother about this, and everyone began to wait for the right moment. And this moment did not fail to happen. Every day Peter went to his brother and daughter-in-law to pay them respects. And then one day he went to his brother, and from him he went to his daughter-in-law. But Peter was already there. Then he returned to his brother’s chambers and told him not to leave here. He took the sword of the Agrics and struck the snake with it. The snake took on its natural form, but before dying, it splashed Peter with its blood. And in those places where the serpent’s blood got in, Peter developed terrible ulcers. Not a single doctor could cope with these ulcers.

Further in the “Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom” in a brief summary you will find out how the main characters met. Peter went to the land of Ryazan, where there were many good doctors. One of the princely youths wandered into the village of Laskovo and entered the house of the tree frogs. This was the name given to the honey collectors who climbed trees for it. In this house he met Fevronia, who charmed him with her wisdom and words. He told her about Peter’s trouble and the girl agreed to help. But only with one condition. If she cures Peter, she will be his wife.

The main character of “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom” was dismissive of the girl’s words. He made a promise, but did not intend to marry the tree frog’s daughter. The girl took a bowl of sourdough bread, blew on it three times and ordered the prince to heat the bathhouse. And those places that are covered with the ulcer, anoint with leaven, except for one. It seemed too simple to the prince and he ordered to give the girl a bunch of flax. From it he ordered that while he was in the bathhouse, they would sew him a shirt, clothes, and a scarf. The servant conveyed Peter's words to the girl. She also ordered to cut off a log of wood and make a weaving mill from it while she combed out a bunch of flax. Peter marveled at such words and ordered it to be conveyed that this was impossible. Then Fevronia told me to tell you that you couldn’t even sew a shirt from a bunch of flax.

Peter carried out Fevronia’s orders exactly. And the very next day he was healed. He sent gifts to the girl, who Fevronia did not accept, and he himself went to Murom. But from that one ulcer that he did not anoint, new ones came from him and they became the same as before. Then he returned again to the girl and asked to cure him again. Fevronia, not at all offended, set the same conditions. This time Peter was cured and took the girl as his wife. They returned to Murom and lived piously.

Further in “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom” you can read about how Prince Paul died and Peter took his place on the throne. But Fevronia’s class offended the wives of the boyars. Then they began to slander her, saying that she was collecting crumbs from the table. But when the prince decided to check it, fragrant incense was found in his wife’s hands. Then the boyars began to ask the prince to choose a new wife. But Peter ordered the boyars to ask Fevronia about this. And when, during the feast, all the boyars as one began to ask Fevronia to leave, she said that she would leave only with the prince. The boyars were happy. After all, everyone saw themselves as an autocrat. Peter did not dare to break the laws of God.

The boyars quickly assembled ships and Peter and Fevronia sailed along the Oka. One man sailed with them, whose wife was on the same ship. He looked at Fevronia with a thought, but the saint immediately understood this thought. She told him to drink water first from the right side of the boat, and then from the left. And she asked which water tastes better. The man replied that it was the same. “So female nature is the same,” Fevronia answered him. In the evening they stopped for the night. The cook cut down several small trees to install the vat. The saint came up and said that in the morning these would be big trees. And so it happened. And in the morning messengers arrived from Murom. They asked the prince to return. After all, the boyars, as in Boris Akunin’s book “The Widow’s Cloth,” carried out a terrible massacre, trying to sit on the throne. Prince Peter and Fevronia returned to Murom and ruled wisely.

When the time came for them to perform a pious performance, Peter and Fevronia began to pray that they would die on the same day. And they even ordered themselves to make two coffins with a thin partition from one stone. At that time, the main character of “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom” was working on the faces of saints for the Church of the Most Pure Mother of God. She received news from her husband that he would soon die and asked her to return. Fevronia asked to wait. And so twice. The third time she went to her husband and they died on the same day, June 25.

But people decided to break the prince’s covenant. Separate coffins were built for them and placed in separate parts of the city. But in the morning both bodies lay in their double coffin. Then people once again separated Peter and Fevronia, but in the morning they were together again. So they remained together in the city church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Prince Pavel ruled in the city of Murom. The devil sent a flying serpent to his wife for fornication. He appeared to her in his own form, but to other people he seemed to be Prince Paul. The princess confessed everything to her husband, but he did not know what to do. He ordered his wife to ask the serpent why death could come to him. The serpent told the princess that his death would be “from Peter’s shoulder, from Agrikov’s sword.”

The prince had a brother named Peter. He began to think about how to kill the serpent, but did not know where to get Agrikov’s sword. Once in the church of the Vozdvizhensky Monastery, a child showed him Agrikov’s sword, which lay in a gap between the stones of the altar wall. The prince took the sword.

One day Peter came to his brother. He was at home, in his room. Then Peter went to his daughter-in-law and saw that his brother was already sitting with her. Paul explained that the serpent can take on his form. Then Peter ordered his brother not to go anywhere, took Agrikov’s sword, came to his daughter-in-law and killed the serpent. The serpent appeared in his nature and, dying, sprinkled Peter with blood.

Peter's body was covered with ulcers, he became seriously ill, and no one could cure him. The patient was brought to Ryazan land and they began to look for doctors there. His servant came to Laskovo. Entering one house, he saw a girl weaving cloth. It was Fevronia, the daughter of a poison dart frog who extracts honey. The young man, seeing the wisdom of the girl, told her about the misfortune that befell his master.

Fevronia replied that she knew a doctor who could cure the prince, and offered to bring Peter to her house. When this was done, Fevronia volunteered to take on the treatment herself if Peter took her as his wife. The prince did not take her words seriously, because he did not consider it possible to marry the poison dart frog’s daughter, but promised to do so if he was healed.

She gave him a vessel of her bread leaven and ordered him to go to the bathhouse and anoint all the ulcers there with leaven, except one. Peter, wanting to test her wisdom, sent her a bunch of flax and ordered her to weave a shirt, ports and a towel from it while he was in the bathhouse. In response, Fevronia sent him a stump of log so that the prince could make a loom out of it during this time. Peter told her that this was impossible. And Fevronia replied that it was also impossible to fulfill his command. Peter marveled at her wisdom.

The next morning he woke up healthy - there was only one ulcer on his body - but did not fulfill his promise to marry Fevronia, but sent her gifts. She didn't accept them. The prince left for the city of Murom, but his ulcers multiplied and he was forced to return to Fevronia in shame. The girl healed the prince, and he took her as his wife.

Pavel died, and Peter began to rule Murom. The boyars did not like Princess Fevronia because of her origin and slandered Petra about her. One person said, for example, that Fevronia, getting up from the table, collects crumbs in her hand as if she were hungry. The prince ordered his wife to dine with him. After dinner, the princess collected crumbs from the table. Peter unclenched her hand and saw incense in it.

Then the boyars directly told the prince that they did not want to see Fevronia as a princess: let him take whatever wealth he wants and leave Murom. They repeated the same thing at Fevronia’s own feast. She agreed, but only wanted to take her husband with her. The prince followed God's commandments and therefore did not part with his wife, although he had to renounce his principality. And the boyars were pleased with this decision, because each of them wanted to be a ruler himself.

Peter and Fevronia sailed out of the city along the Oka. On the ship where Fevronia was, there was another man with his wife. He looked at Fevronia with some thought. And she told him to scoop up water on the right and left sides of the boat and drink. And then she asked which water tastes better. Hearing that she was the same, Fevronia explained: female nature is the same, so there is no point in thinking about someone else’s wife.

Food was prepared on the shore, and the cook cut down small trees to hang the cauldrons on. And Fevronia blessed these trees, and the next morning they became large trees. Peter and Fevronia were planning to move on. But then nobles from Murom came and began to ask the prince and princess to return to rule the city.

The couple begged God to die at the same time. They wanted to be buried together and ordered two coffins to be carved in one stone, which had only a partition between them. At the same time, the prince and princess took monasticism. Peter received the monastic name David, and Fevronia became Euphrosyne.

Euphrosyne embroidered air for the temple. And David sent a letter to her: he was waiting for her to die together. The nun asked him to wait until she finished embroidering the air. In the second letter, David wrote that he could not wait long, and in the third, that he could wait no longer. Then Euphrosyne, having finished embroidering the face of the last saint, but not finishing the clothes, sent to tell David that she was ready to die. And after praying, they both died on June 25th.

Their bodies were laid in different places: David - at the Cathedral Church of the Mother of God, and Euphrosyne - in the Vozdvizhensky Convent. And their common coffin, which they themselves ordered to hew, was placed in the Church of the Virgin Mary.

The next morning, their separate coffins were empty, and the bodies of the saints rested “in a single coffin.” People buried them as before. And the next morning they were found again in a common coffin. Then people no longer dared to touch the bodies of the saints and, having fulfilled their will, buried them together in the cathedral church of the Nativity of the Virgin. From the editors of “Russia Forever”: Today is the All-Russian Day of Family, Love and Fidelity. It is on this day, July 8, that the Russian Orthodox Church commemorates the blessed princes Peter and Fevronia, the Murom miracle workers, who set an example of selfless love. This miracle is narrated in the famous “Tale of Peter and Fevronia,” written by the famous spiritual writer of the mid-16th century, priest Ermolai.

It is noteworthy that in the Old Russian Legend, central importance is assigned to the wise Fevronia, a commoner who became not just a co-ruler of her husband-prince, but the savior of his life, both physical and spiritual, who raised her husband and their union to the ideal of perfection and righteousness.

As Academician Likhachev writes: “Fevronia is like Rublev’s quiet angels. She is the “wise maiden” of fairy tales. External manifestations of her great inner strength are stingy. She is ready for the feat of self-denial, she has conquered her passions. Her love for Prince Peter is invincible externally because she is defeated internally, by herself, subordinated to the mind. At the same time, her wisdom is not only a property of her mind, but to the same extent - her feelings and will. There is no conflict between her feeling, mind and will: hence the extraordinary “silence” of her image.”

“THE TALE OF PETER AND FEVRONIYA OF MUROM”

There is debate about the time of the appearance of “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom”. Some researchers attribute it to the 15th century, others to the beginning of the 16th. Judging by the fact that the church cult of Peter and Fevronia in Murom took shape already in the second half of the 15th century, it is more likely that the “Tale” in some original form unknown to us was compiled already at that time. However, the “Tale” acquired its final form, as R.P. Dmitrieva has now proven, under the pen of Ermolai Erasmus, a writer who worked in the middle of the 16th century.

“The Tale of Peter and Fevronia” is a combination of two folklore stories: one about a seducing snake and the other about a wise maiden. These plots in the “Tale” are connected and dedicated to Murom, and the entire story claims to be historically accurate.

The charm of “The Tale” lies in the simplicity and clarity of presentation, in the sedate slowness of the story, in the narrator’s ability not to be surprised by the surprising, in the simplicity and good-naturedness of the characters that harmonizes with the narrator’s calmness.

The heroine of the story is the maiden Fevronia. She is wise with folk wisdom. She makes wise riddles and knows how to resolve life's difficulties without fuss. She does not object to her enemies and does not insult them with open teaching, but resorts to allegory, the purpose of which is to teach a harmless lesson: her opponents themselves realize their mistakes. She works miracles in passing: she makes the branches stuck for the fire bloom into a large tree overnight. Her life-giving power extends to everything around her. Crumbs of bread in her palm turn into grains of fragrant incense. Prince Peter tries to deceive her only once, at the beginning, when he decides not to marry her, contrary to his promise. But after the very first lesson taught to him by Fevronia, he listens to her in everything and, having got married, lives with her in harmony, their love crosses the threshold of death.

“This is a city in the Rustei land, called Mur” - this is how the story begins simply. In this city, as the narrator says, the blessed Prince Paul reigned. And the rapist serpent began to fly to his wife. To outsiders, he took on the appearance of Paul. Pavel's wife told her husband about her misfortune, and both began to think about how to get rid of the rapist.

One day, when the serpent again flew to Paul’s wife, she asked the serpent “with respect”: “You know a lot, do you know your death: what will it be and from what?” Seduced by the “good seduction” of Paul’s wife, the serpent replied: “My death is from Peter’s shoulder, from Agrikov’s sword.”

Paul's brother, Peter, decides to kill the serpent, but does not know where he can get Agrikov's sword. He finds this sword on one of his trips to private prayer in a country temple in the altar between the “ceramides,” that is, ceramic tiles that usually covered burials.

Having made sure that it is not Paul who is sitting in the temple of Paul’s wife, but a serpent who has taken on the appearance of Paul, Peter strikes him with Agric’s sword. His true appearance returns to the serpent, and he dies “trembling”, sprinkling Peter with his blood. From this blood Peter is covered with scabs. His illness cannot be cured. Peter's terrible illness serves as the beginning of the second part of the story, where the wise maiden Fevronia appears and heals the prince. There is something in common in the details of this part of the story with the Western European medieval narrative of Tristan and Isolde.

Fevronia is like Rublev’s quiet angels. She is the “wise maiden” of fairy tales. External manifestations of her great inner strength are stingy. The first appearance in the story of the girl Fevronia is captured in a visually distinct image. She is found in a simple peasant hut by an envoy of the Murom prince Peter, who fell ill from the poisonous blood of the snake he killed. In a poor peasant dress, Fevronia sat at the loom and was engaged in a “quiet” task - weaving linen, and a hare was jumping in front of her, as if symbolizing her merging with nature. Her questions and answers, her quiet and wise conversation clearly show that “Rublev’s thoughtfulness” is not thoughtless. Fevronia amazes the messenger with her prophetic answers and promises to help the prince. Well-versed in healing potions, she heals the prince, just as Isolde heals Tristan, infected with the blood of the dragon he killed.

Despite social obstacles, the prince marries the peasant girl Fevronia. Like the love of Tristan and Isolde, the love of Peter and Fevronia overcomes the hierarchical barriers of feudal society and does not take into account the opinions of others. The arrogant wives of the boyars disliked Fevronia and demanded her expulsion, just as the vassals of King Mark demanded the expulsion of Isolde. Prince Peter renounces the principality and leaves with his wife. The life-giving power of Fevronia’s love is so great that the poles stuck in the ground bloom into trees with her blessing. She is so strong in spirit that she can unravel the thoughts of the people she meets. In the power of love, in the wisdom suggested to her by this love, Fevronia turns out to be superior even to her ideal husband, Prince Peter. Death itself cannot separate them.

When Peter and Fevronia felt the approach of death, they began to ask God to die at the same time, and prepared a common coffin for themselves. After that they became monks in different monasteries. And so, when Fevronia was embroidering “air” for the holy cup for the temple of the Mother of God, Peter sent her to tell her that he was dying, and asked her to die with him. But Fevronia asks to give her time to finish the bedspread. Peter sent to her a second time, ordering her to say: “I won’t wait long enough for you.” Finally, sending her for the third time, Peter tells her: “I already want to die and I’m not waiting for you.” Then Fevronia, who only had to finish the saint’s robe, stuck a needle into the bedspread, wrapped a thread around it and sent it to tell Peter that she was ready to die with him. So Tristan delays the hour of his death. “The time is approaching,” Tristan says to Isolde, “haven’t we drunk all the sorrow and all the joy with you? The deadline is approaching. When it comes, and I call you, Isolde, will you come?” “Call me, friend,” Isolde replies, “you know that I will come.”

After the death of Peter and Fevronia, people put their bodies in separate coffins, but the next day their bodies ended up in a common coffin that they had prepared in advance. People tried to separate Peter and Fevronia a second time, but again the bodies were together, and after that they no longer dared to separate them. In the same way, in the victory of love over death, Tristan descends on Isolde’s grave with a blooming thorn tree (in some versions of the novel about Tristan and Isolde, their bodies end up in the same coffin). The images of the heroes of this story, whom neither the boyars nor death itself could separate, are surprisingly psychological for their time, but without any exaltation. Their psychological nature is outwardly manifested with great restraint.

Let us also note the restraint of the narrative, as if echoing the modesty of the manifestation of feelings. The gesture of Fevronia, sticking a needle into the bedspread and wrapping a golden thread around the stuck needle, is as laconic and visually clear as Fevronia’s first appearance in the story, when she was sitting in a hut at a loom, and a hare was jumping in front of her. To appreciate this gesture of Fevronia wrapping a thread around a needle, we must remember that in ancient Russian literary works there is no everyday life, no detailed descriptions - the action in them takes place as if in cloth. In these conditions, Fevronia’s gesture is precious, like the gold embroidery that she sewed for the “holy” cup.

THE TALE OF PETER AND FEVRONIA IN ICON STAMPS

The famous “Tale of Peter and Fevronia” was written by the famous spiritual writer of the mid-16th century, priest Ermolai (in monasticism Erasmus). Almost immediately it becomes the favorite reading of the Russian people and is distributed in a huge number of lists. About 350 of them have survived to this day. Many of these lists were decorated with miniatures, and soon hagiographic icons of the locally famous Murom saints Peter and Fevronia, and in monasticism David and Euphrosyne, also appeared. He came to his brother and asked: “How did you come here? After all, I left you from this mansion, and, without delaying anywhere, I came to your wife in the mansion, and saw you sitting with her, and was surprised how you ended up there before me. Detailed retelling

The work describes the romantic love story of the spouses, who later became saints for the people.

Blessed Peter was the second son of Muromsky Yuri Vladimirovich. Before his entry into government, he became seriously ill. He developed ulcers all over his body and was very unwell. The illness was sent to him by an evil spirit in the form of a serpent, which appeared to his brother’s wife and committed sinful acts with her. When she explained to Pavel, he asked her to find out how he would die. And the serpent said that his death would be from the sword that Peter would hold.

The elder brother, seeing Paul's suffering, found Agrikov's sword and destroyed the villain, but he took revenge on him by casting witchcraft on him, sprinkling him with his blood. And so, Peter, exhausted from his illnesses, was ready to die, but his relatives and servants did not give up and looked for doctors. Once, while he was sleeping, he received a vision that said that not far from Ryazan there lived a pious maiden who could heal him. Then he sent his servants there to find this peasant woman. The prince's close associate wandered for a long time in the Ryazan lands and... Finally, he arrived in Laskovo, where he discovered a beekeeper's house. Going there, he saw a girl weaving. From a conversation with her, the young man realized that she was very smart and had magical powers. He told a story about the misfortune that happened to his master, and Fevronia advised him to bring him to her place to listen to the sovereign’s sincere words. Hearing such news, Peter immediately set off on the road. Arriving at the place, he sent a servant to the home and promised to marry her legally if she cured him. The girl gave him a potion with which he was supposed to smear himself, but one place must be left clean.

The prince did so, but in order to test how pure her thoughts are, he instructs her to complete an interesting task. But, the girl, thanks to her intelligence, also orders one impossible thing to be done. Seeing how wise she is and surprised at his speedy recovery, the prince sends her gifts, but does not keep his word.

Peter returned to his city happy that he was cured so quickly. But, having failed to fulfill his promise, he begins to fall ill again. In shame, he returned to Fevronia, begging her to save him from his illness. She agreed on the condition that he marry her. This time he took her as his wife. That's how the girl became a princess.

Soon Paul died, and Peter took the throne. But the boyars did not like the fact that a simple peasant woman became a ruler. They began to say various nasty things about her to the prince. Fevronia’s husband once checked the accuracy of the words of his subjects and became convinced that she was impeccable. But the courtiers did not accept the fact that the commoner ruled them. And then they came to the prince and said that they did not want to see her at the palace. Peter could not be angry, and he did not tell his wife all this, but advised them to announce it themselves. Then the day came when his entourage told Fevronia at the table that they did not like her. The girl did not get angry and left, but not alone. The husband did not want to rule without her; he sailed on a ship that his servants had prepared along the river. Stopping for the night, Fevronia noticed the prince’s worried look and, having asked him about everything, reassured him that the Lord would not abandon them.

When they were preparing food, they cut branches from small bushes in order to light a fire. Fevronia uttered miraculous words, where she wished that huge trees would grow instead of the cut down places. This is what happened the next day.

In the morning, the couple began to get ready to set off, but suddenly they saw the ships on which his subjects arrived. They fell at his feet and began to beg him to return as ruler to the city of Murom. After he left, strife began in the city. Everyone wanted to take the place of the prince. There was famine and robbery. There was no unity among the troops, and the enemy began to overwhelm the state with raids. Peter and Fevronia could not refuse them, they returned home and began to rule according to conscience and honor. No one was insulted without the law, the poor were given gifts, and visitors were always welcome. When the time came to die, they wished to be buried together. Before their death, the couple took monastic vows and became monks. Peter was named David, and Fevronia received the name Euphrosyne. Death came to them when the nun was doing air embroidery for the temple. Her husband sent her a message saying that he was dying, but she asked him not to do this until he finished embroidering. Euphrosyne did not have time to finish her work, David could not wait any longer. So they left this world together at the same hour and day.

They were placed in different coffins, and a common tomb was placed near the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos. What a miracle it was for everyone when people discovered them in the morning in the same coffin. And no matter how they were separated, their bodies ended up together. They did not bother them anymore, and buried them in the tomb, as they wished during their lifetime. Since then, Peter and Fevronia have become an example of Christian marriage.

The story teaches love and fidelity in marriage, as well as warm and trusting relationships.
