The icon of Saints Peter and Fevronia is an image in monasticism of David and Euphrosyne, who were the Orthodox patrons of the family. They are considered the model of a perfect Christian marriage. This story is about how the prince fell in love with a girl from the people from the family of a tree climber, which became the reason for the anger of the boyars. For the sake of love, David renounced the princely throne for the sake of his beloved. Fate had many trials in store for them, but the couple coped with all the trials. The man and woman accepted monasticism and after a while they became worthy on the same day, June 25, 1228.

Family holiday
July 8 (June 25, old style) is the day of veneration of Saints Peter and Fevronia, established by the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2006, residents of Murom collected about 20 thousand signatures under an appeal to declare the day of remembrance of saints “All-Russian Day of Married Love and Family Happiness.” Since July 8, 2008, residents of Russia have been celebrating the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.
Due to the fact that this date falls during Peter's Fast, when it is impossible to get married, the Russian Orthodox Church at the end of 2012 established another day of remembrance of Saints Peter and Fevronia on the Sunday before September 19 (September 6, O.S.). On this day in 1992, the relics of the saints were transferred to the Holy Trinity Convent in the city of Murom.
On the September day of the celebration of the memory of the saints, at the special litany during the Liturgy, additional petitions are made:
- We also pray that your people keep this commandment: let God unite, let not man separate, and grant their home churches indestructible strength and success in unfeigned love.
- We also pray for the preservation of the marriage of Your servants in peace and unanimity, piety and purity.
- We also pray that your people will rejoice in the vision of sons and daughters, and that our people will multiply and your blessing will be inherited in them from generation to generation.

General information
Peter and Fevronia were canonized in 1547 as locally revered saints. Their days of remembrance are July 8 and the Sunday before September 19.
History of the Saints
The body of Prince Peter, splashed with the blood of the killed snake, was covered with incurable ulcers. In a prophetic dream, he saw that only the daughter of the tree climber (beekeeper) Fevronia could save him. In gratitude for the healing, the prince promised to marry an amazingly beautiful and kind girl, who amazed him with her wisdom, but did not keep his word, fearing an unequal marriage.
The image of Saints Peter and Fevronia is a symbol of devoted love, loyalty to each other and the ability to sacrifice for the sake of love.
The illness returned to Peter again. Fevronia cured him again, and the prince entered into an honest marriage with her. The boyars could not come to terms with the fact that a commoner had become a princess. And they forced Peter to choose between power and his wife. Peter chose Fevronia, and they left Murom together. Despite the trials of life in exile, the prince never reproached Fevronia.
Unable to manage the city, the boyars asked the prince and his wife to return. Peter and Fevronia ruled Murom until old age. The couple lived their lives happily in peace and harmony. Their reign was wise, merciful and fair. The couple, possessing unshakable faith, decided to devote the end of their earthly journey to serving God.
Peter and Fevronia became monks while in different monasteries. Later they corresponded with each other. Euphrosyne and David (monastic names of the spouses) prayed to God to allow them to die on the same day, and prepared themselves a double coffin, in which only a thin partition would separate their bodies from each other.
Peter and Fevronia died on the same day and hour. In accordance with tradition, they were buried separately. But the next day their bodies were found together. After two unsuccessful attempts to place their bodies separately from each other, the clergy buried Peter and Fevronia in the same coffin.
Description

Miracles Revealed
The image of Peter and Fevonia can be hung on the walls and placed on shelves. It is important that there is nothing unnecessary next to it - photographs, posters, calendars.
Miracles occurred during the lifetime of the saints. So the crumbs of bread that were in Fevronia’s hands became incense, and the pegs prepared for the fire turned into young trees. Princess Fevronia’s possession of the gift of insight is evidenced by the incident when she prevented the lustful plan of a boyar whom she liked, forcing him to look away.
It is also a miracle that the bodies of spouses buried separately always ended up together, no matter how much they tried to separate them.
Through prayer to the saints and from their relics, miracles are still performed. In addition to numerous healings from all kinds of illnesses, Peter and Fevronia help avoid conflict if it arises.
With their assistance, peace and mutual understanding are restored between lovers and spouses, parents and children, and relationships between quarreling friends are improved. Single people find their love with their help.
Women, desperate to find their soul mate, get married. Those who dreamed of pregnancy are having children.

Thinking of this world's reign and glory for a time, / for this sake, you lived piously in the world, Peter, / together with your wife, the wise Fevronia, / through alms and prayers. Pleased./ Moreover, even after death, lying inseparably in the grave,/ you invisibly provide healing, / and now pray to Christ // to preserve the city and the people who glorify you.
Translation: Considering the reign and glory of this world to be temporary, you lived piously in the world, Peter, together with your wife, the wise Fevronia, pleasing God with alms and prayers. Therefore, even after death in the tomb, resting inseparably, you invisibly give healing, and now you pray to Christ to preserve the city and the people who glorify you.
The icon depicts the saints in old age, but at the time of their acquaintance they were no more than 30 years old
The image has its own history, like all the others. A very long time ago, before accepting monasticism, Peter was Prince Dmitry Yuryevich. He ruled in the city of Murom in the 13th century. Her tonsure as a monk meant a complete renunciation of everything he had in life before the monastery.
Although the icon depicts the Saints at an older age, they met when they were no more than 30 years old. The history of this acquaintance deserves a more careful study.
The prince was very sick with leprosy. He searched for a long time in villages and villages for someone who could heal him from this disease. Fevronia lived in one of these villages. She was an ordinary peasant woman.
Fevronia set a condition for Prince Peter: if he cures him, he will marry her.
Since childhood, the girl was fond of various herbs and could treat many diseases with their help. One day the prince came to her and asked him to help him fight his leprosy. But Fevronia set a condition for the prince: if you are cured, you will get married. Naturally, he had to marry her.
The prince eagerly promised to do anything, because he wanted to be healthy so much. When the girl cured him, the prince quickly left the village and left this area.
He understood that he simply could not marry a commoner, but he wanted to be healthy more than anything else.
This is how he decided to deceive the poor girl.
But the Lord arranged it so that as soon as the prince left the village, his illness returned to him. Peter realized what he was guilty of and returned back to fulfill his promise.
Peter married Fevronia. When he brought her to his mansion, the boyars started a terrible riot; they did not want to see the prince with a simple peasant woman. War began to brew, and Peter had to leave his throne.
They got into a boat together and sailed down the Oka River, which carried them further and further from Murom.

After the prince left his place, a real war began for the throne. The boyars could not decide who to put in his place. Then some ordinary people found Peter and asked him to return to his previous place and establish peace and quiet.
Peter returned to the city and took his former place. He ruled for many years, doing everything for the sake of his subjects. At the age of 90, Peter and Fevronia took monastic vows and died some time later on the same day.
