Patron saints of teachers and students
01.09.2020
There are many known patrons of students - schoolchildren and students. Some of the most revered are the holy Venerable Sergius of Radonezh, the holy righteous John of Kronstadt, Saints Cyril and Methodius, the holy martyr Tatiana and, of course, our intercessor and patroness the Most Holy Theotokos.
Venerable Sergius of Radonezh
In the first half of the 14th century, the famous Trinity-Sergius Lavra arose. Its founder, the Monk Sergius (in the world Bartholomew), was the son of the Rostov boyars Cyril and Maria, who moved closer to Moscow to the village of Radonezh. At the age of seven, Bartholomew was sent to learn to read and write. He longed for learning with all his soul, but literacy was not given to him. Grieving over this, day and night he prayed to the Lord to open the door of book understanding to him. One day, while looking for missing horses in the field, he saw an unfamiliar old monk under an oak tree. The monk prayed. The youth approached him and told him his grief. Having listened sympathetically to the boy, the elder began to pray for his enlightenment. Then, taking out the reliquary, he took out a small piece of prosphora and, blessing Bartholomew with it, said: “Take, child, and eat: this is given to you as a sign of the grace of God and the understanding of the Holy Scriptures.” This grace really descended on the boy: the Lord gave him memory and understanding, and the boy began to easily assimilate book wisdom.
Icon of the Mother of God “Addition of Mind”
In front of this icon, they pray to the Mother of God and Her Divine Infant as the source of the highest wisdom and intelligence. They ask for “an increase in intelligence”, for the gift of help in learning, as well as for spiritual enlightenment and help in raising children.
Holy Righteous John of Kronstadt
In his sixth year, the youth John, with the help of his father, began to learn to read and write. But reading and writing was difficult for the boy at first. This saddened him, but it also prompted him to especially fervently pray to God for help. When his father, having collected the last funds from his poverty, took him to the Arkhangelsk parish school, he, especially acutely feeling his loneliness and helplessness there, found all his consolation only in prayer. He prayed often and fervently, fervently asking God for help. And after one of these fervent prayers, at night, the boy suddenly seemed to be shocked all over, “as if a veil had fallen from his eyes, as if the mind had opened in his head,” “it felt so easy and joyful in his soul”: he clearly saw the teacher of that day, his lesson, he even remembered what he was talking about. It got a little light, he jumped out of bed, grabbed his books - and, oh happiness! He began to read much better, began to understand everything well and remember what he read.
From that time on, the youth John began to study well: he was one of the first to graduate from college, the first to graduate from the Arkhangelsk Theological Seminary, and was admitted at public expense to the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.
Martyr Tatiana - patroness of students
The Holy Martyr Tatiana is considered the patroness of students in Russia, and her memory day, January 25, is the favorite holiday of all teachers and students. After all, it was on her memory day in 1755 that Empress Elizaveta Petrovna signed the Decree on the founding of Moscow University.
Saints Cyril and Methodius
The holy Equal-to-the-Apostles first teachers and Slavic educators, the brothers Cyril and Methodius, came from a noble and pious family that lived in the Greek city of Thessaloniki. Saint Methodius was the eldest of seven brothers, Saint Constantine (Cyril was his monastic name) the youngest.
Saint Constantine, with the help of his brother Saint Methodius and the disciples Gorazd, Clement, Sava, Naum and Angelar, compiled the Slavic alphabet and translated into Slavic the books without which the Divine service could not be performed: the Gospel, the Apostle, the Psalter and selected services.

Prayer to Sergius of Radonezh
Every saint is a mediator between man and God. They all lived human lives, during which they prayed to God for the needs of people, asking them for health, happiness, awareness, and, of course, deliverance from the devil. Contrary to popular belief, it was not they who performed miracles at all, but God at their requests. And the Saints knew how to reach God by saying prayers through the mouths of the righteous. After all, God hears, first of all, those who lead a godly lifestyle.
At the same time, each of them has its own “specialization”. Some spent their entire lives helping childless women find children, helped get rid of the crown of celibacy, others prayed to God for health and healing, or for forgiveness of those who, due to their sinfulness, base feelings, and attachments, had lost their minds.
Patron of Students
Sergius of Radonezh is, first of all, the patron saint of students. As a boy, he, like his brothers, was sent to school to learn to read and write. However, Bartholomew (the name given to him at birth), although he tried, could not comprehend literacy. He was punished and ridiculed.
And now you will understand why the prayer to St. Sergius of Radonezh is read by those who are facing exams.
Once a boy was sent into the forest to find stallions that had gone on a spree. On the way, he met an old man who asked what he wanted. Sergius asked God's help to learn to read and write. The elder prayed for the boy and then met with his parents. Together with Sergius, they went to the chapel, where the elder ordered him to read the Holy Scriptures. Sergius protested because of his inability, but the elder ordered. The boy read like no one else - without interference or hesitation.
The elder told his parents that Bartholomew would now learn to read and write the Holy Scriptures.
It is customary to read a prayer to Sergius of Radonezh before exams or in the case of children who do not show success in their studies. Everyone who says the words of prayer should remember how the Saint, as a boy, received a blessing for a letter. And everyone hopes that God will bless them for successful studies.
Prayer for health
Since childhood, Bartholomew led an ascetic lifestyle. He ate nothing on Wednesdays and Fridays, and on other days he ate only bread and water. At night, the boy stayed awake and read prayers, which worried his caring mother - the child did not eat or sleep.
When his parents died, Bartholomew and his brother went into hermitage in the forest, where they founded a church in the name of the Holy Trinity. This was the first church founded by Sergius of Radonezh.
The brother could not stand the asceticism, and Sergius was left alone with himself. Soon (at the age of 23) he was tonsured a monk. Gradually, monks began to flock to him and together they formed a monastery, which later became the Trinity-Sergius Monastery.
Sergius blessed princes on military campaigns, healed people and never accepted gifts from anyone.
Today, when the power of Sergius of Radonezh has become generally known, people pray to him for health in cases where both doctors and, it would seem, God, do not take care of the patient. The prayer to Saint Sergius of Radonezh has miraculous power, because there are not so many righteous people in the world who became them in childhood.
In addition, as before during his lifetime, they pray to the Saint for the preservation of the lives of soldiers on the battlefield. After all, in his time he blessed not only soldiers, but even princes.
Prayer for Spiritual Healing
The relics of Sergius of Radonezh are kept in the Holy Trinity Lavra of Sergius. During his lifetime, he healed people from both physical and mental illnesses. Today, thousands of believers come to see his relics in order to be healed from what. Prayers to St. Sergius of Radonezh deliver from pride, arrogance, and tame those whose souls are captive to conceit. Sergius of Radonezh asks God to send grace to people so that they comprehend the beauty and happiness of fasting, prayer and a modest lifestyle.

Saint Tatiana
The Holy Great Martyr Tatiana is prayed mainly by students, whose patrons she turned out to be by chance - the order to found Moscow State University was signed on the day of St. Tatiana. In honor of the same saint, a home church at the university was consecrated. Obviously, her help was so great, and students received it so often, that faith in the help of this saint quickly spread throughout Russia.
And over time, even the feast of St. Tatiana began to be celebrated as a secular holiday, Student's Day.
Tatiana lived in Rome in the 3rd century, knew science, was a deaconess of the Roman Christian Church, and for her faith in Christ, by order of the Emperor Severus, she was hacked to death with swords. The emperor wanted to hunt her down with a lion for the amusement of the Roman public in the arena of the Colosseum, but the lion refused to kill the young woman.
The house church in the name of the Holy Martyr Tatiana at Moscow State University still operates now, but you can pray to the saint in any church of the Russian Orthodox Church where there is her icon.
John of Kronstadt
The holy righteous John of Kronstadt lived in the 19th century, and in his adolescence this intelligent and perspicacious ascetic of Christ had problems with his studies. He then studied at the Arkhangelsk parish school; he began to have problems remembering and understanding what the teachers were explaining.
His parents were poor people, and their efforts to teach their son greatly embarrassed the boy - he understood that they were giving everything they had so that he could study, but he could not even understand what they were teaching him.
The teenager was saved by a fervent prayer to God, according to which the Lord gave the boy grace and the ability to understand science. Later he became the great saint and preacher of Russia, to whom all the poor and unhappy people flocked, finding consolation.
You can pray to the saint in front of his icons, which are very common in the churches of the Russian Orthodox Church, and the relics lie in the Ioannovskaya Stavropegial Convent in St. Petersburg.

They also pray for the ability to learn to the great educators of the Slavic lands, the monks Cyril and Methodius, who developed the alphabet - the Cyrillic alphabet, and using it, translated the Holy Scriptures from Greek into Church Slavonic, including the Gospel and many liturgical works. And besides these saints, you can pray for success in your studies to Matrona of Moscow, Ksenia of St. Petersburg, Theophan the Recluse. But you should always remember that first of all you need to ask the Lord God for knowledge, who reveals his will through the saints.
