The Bible on Breastfeeding. Holy Helpers of Mothers

Drink plenty of fluids

The importance of this factor can hardly be overestimated. For reference: the volume of food for a child in the first year of life starts at 700 ml (1/5 of body weight), gradually increasing to 1 liter per day. Accordingly, the volume of liquid consumed by a nursing mother should increase by at least 1 liter. At home, you should always have herbal teas in a thermos and boiled water (mineral water, compotes or fruit drinks) available at the same time. Combining drinking hot herbal decoctions with feeding is especially effective: you put the mug on the table and, drinking periodically, put the baby to your breast. A wonderful feeling of tide in the chest is guaranteed!

Herbal teas

Most herbal mixtures contain oregano, anise, fennel, lemon balm, dill, nettle, and wild strawberry leaves. All these herbs have a calming, antispasmodic effect, which has a beneficial effect on the production of oxytocin, one of the two main hormones responsible for lactation. Therefore, in case of stress, overwork, nervous exhaustion, when the production of oxytocin decreases, herbal remedies are absolutely recommended for use. But sage and thyme (thyme) should be treated with caution - they have a depressing effect on the production of breast milk.

You can prepare herbs yourself in advance, buy them at a pharmacy to make a mixture at home, or purchase ready-made herbal teas, including in filter bags.

Products that increase lactation

Lactation is a very energy-intensive process. Before you start introducing complementary foods, you feel like a little dairy farm. And nutrition during feeding should be balanced - taking into account not only losses in breast milk, but also energy spent on its creation in the mammary gland. Therefore, during breastfeeding, not only the volume of food increases (mainly due to liquid), but also its calorie content. But not at the expense of cakes and pastries! A sufficient amount of protein-containing foods will ensure adequate lactation with good quality milk. Lean meats, fish (no more than 2 times a week), cottage cheese, cheese, fermented milk products, eggs must be included in the diet of a nursing woman. Hot soups and broths made from lean veal, chicken, turkey, and rabbit stimulate lactation especially well. They should be on the menu every day.

But alcohol, including the legendary beer, as a means of increasing milk production, is absolutely prohibited. When using beer, including with sour cream, the main effect is calming and relaxing, which has a positive effect on the production of oxytocin. Herbal remedies have the same effect, and the consequences of alcohol exposure on a child’s body can be catastrophic. But you can use brewer's yeast as a source of B vitamins.

Any new product should be introduced with caution, observing the child's reaction to it for 2-3 days. And one of the main indicators is the nature of the stool. For a healthy baby in the first month of life, the norm is to pass stool after each feeding. And here Huggies® Elite Soft diapers for newborns can be your assistant, which have a unique Soft Absorb layer that absorbs loose stool and moisture in seconds. And for even more softness, the new Huggies® Elite Soft contain 100% organic cotton. The elastic waistband of the diapers fits perfectly to the baby's body, and a special pocket for loose stool will provide additional protection against leakage. Enjoy!

The Bible on Breastfeeding. Holy Helpers of Mothers

It’s no secret that the current state of affairs in Russia with regard to population health and its growth is far from favorable. Everywhere we see terrible figures of deteriorating demographic indicators: birth rates, deaths; percentages of sick and healthy adults and children. And every year these numbers are more and more frightening... It is obvious that in many respects medicine has moved away from its roots, from traditions whose history goes back more than one millennium. The same can be said about many aspects of modern life. And this is not always connected with scientific and technological progress, but often only with distortion, perversion of moral and moral concepts. Unfortunately, this has not spared young mothers either. One example is the thought of many women about the optionality of breastfeeding their child in favor of supposedly respecting the figure, convenience, and the opportunity to shift some of the care of the child to others. Moreover, many of these women at first do not mind breastfeeding and even theoretically know and understand all the advantages of breastfeeding, but when faced with the first difficulties in this seemingly natural matter, they very quickly abandon this idea, finding excuses for themselves and not wanting to make any effort. some efforts...However, the topic of morality and morality, spirituality in family life and in raising children is too deep and serious, and today, within the framework of this article, we will only try to talk about some facts from Biblical history related to motherhood and breastfeeding , as well as about the holy helpers of mothers.

The question of breastfeeding - about the mammalian nutrition of a newborn as a guarantee of his health - dates back to Adam and Eve, from their children. The first people were close to nature, and breastfeeding their offspring was the only way for them to survive and procreate. Only in the last two centuries has humanity decided to break the connecting thread of nature and generations, which, according to the Bible, dates back more than 7,500 years! In the Holy Scriptures and in the Holy Tradition, in the lives and works of the holy fathers of the Church, we find clear references to breastfeeding as an undeniable guide, a law in the life of a woman in labor, as her holy duty.

The first book of the Bible, called “Genesis,” tells how, already in extreme old age, hitherto barren Sarah gave birth to a son, Isaac, from her husband Abraham. At the same time, the fact is also pointed out that she herself breastfed him. Next we read: “The child has grown and is weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned” (Gen. 21.8.). In the commentary to this passage in Lopukhin’s Explanatory Bible it is said: “Breastfeeding of babies in the ancient East lasted for a very long time... up to five years and usually lasted at least three... The end of this period was celebrated with a solemn family feast, in which the culprit himself could already take some part his".

At the end of the Old Testament story, which is narrated by the non-canonical biblical books of the Maccabees, we encounter the following episode. The mother, consoling her son, who is accepting martyrdom for the ideals of her people, says to him: “Son! Have pity on me, who fed you with milk for three years, do not be afraid of this murderer and accept death, so that by the grace of God I will find you again” (2 Macc. 7.27-29).

It is no coincidence that the Bible also draws attention to the infant period of the life of the prophet Samuel, when his mother Anna, who made a vow to dedicate the baby to God, said “to her husband: when the baby is weaned and grows up, then I will take him, and he will appear before the Lord, and will remain there forever." “And Elkan her husband said to her: Do what you please: stay until you have suckled him... And his wife stayed and suckled her son until she had suckled him” (1 Samuel 1.22-23)

Many verses in the Bible indicate that maternal feeding is also given some sacramental and symbolic meaning. He is mentioned when it comes to devotion to his people, about feat, about dedication to God, the ideal of brotherly love is defined as a relationship through milk, not blood (“Oh, that you were my brother, who suckled my mother’s breasts!” (Song. 8.1 ))

In the letters and lives of Russian saints there is a wonderful comparison between feeding on mother's milk and the Sacrament of Communion. It is quoted by the holy righteous John of Kronstadt in the book “My Life in Christ”: “Is it surprising that the Lord offers you His Body and Blood for food and drink? Whoever gave you the flesh of the animals he created as food, He finally gave Himself as food and drink. Who fed you with your mother's breasts, He finally Himself undertook to feed you with His Flesh and Blood, so that, just as with your mother's milk you sucked into yourself the well-known properties of your mother, her spirit, so with the Body and Blood of Christ the Savior you would suck into yourself His spirit and life."

Of course, the most striking example, the ideal of motherhood, is the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, who fully fulfilled her sacred destiny - she carried in her womb, gave birth to and breast-fed the Lord Jesus Christ. It is no coincidence that icons of the Mother of God are the most revered among most peoples of the world, and especially among women, as images of the highest love and morality, as well as symbols of maternal devotion, strength and feat. Many icons of the Mother of God are dedicated specifically to birth, feeding and upbringing: “Mammal”, “Blessed is the Womb that bore You, and the breasts that nourished You”, “Helping wives give birth to children” (“Help in childbirth”), “Tenderness”, “Education” , “Healer”, “Fedorovskaya”. Praying in front of these icons, women and their relatives seek protection and help from their heavenly mother during pregnancy, childbirth and raising babies - the most important and responsible moments of family life. Very often, pregnant women wear icons of the Mother of God, take the icons to the maternity hospital and then surround the newborn child with them: they place them at the changing table, hang them on the crib...

In general, it is human nature to turn to higher powers mainly in critical situations. There are times when all people—believers in God, believers “in something higher,” and even non-believers at all—call on the Lord and pray to the saints. These are moments of special experiences when it comes to the life and health of loved ones and children, and people rely on help from above, because sometimes there is no one else to rely on... We rarely turn to heaven with gratitude, but more often we cry out for help when we feel powerless. These are the sensations that a woman sometimes experiences at the time of childbirth, when the process goes against her will... Here she is completely in the power of nature, the Creator and higher powers... Note that even if a woman is not going to breastfeed and has decided this in advance, it still doesn’t matter. nature will take its course, her body will tune in to feeding, will produce the appropriate hormones, and perhaps she will even produce milk. And only then, having already made some efforts, she will be able to do it her way, turning back the natural process... But it is better to trust nature and God’s providence, make every effort to realize her feminine destiny “one hundred percent” and call on the saints for help , fortunately, the church carefully offers prayers for the baby’s safe pregnancy and childbirth, for breastfeeding and for upbringing.

Who to pray for help

This list is compiled from knowledge of the lives and exploits of these saints; the miracles shown by them in their earthly life thereby explain why they are usually prayed to for a specific illness and in a specific situation. At the same time, people often turn to these same saints in completely different needs and illnesses and, by their faith, receive help from them. The texts of prayers can be found in prayer books, or you can pray in your own words - the main thing is not to do it “automatically,” but to tune in to what and for whom you are asking.

Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary “Mammal”

On January 25, according to the new style (January 12, according to the old style), the icon of the Mother of God “Mammal” is celebrated in the Orthodox Church. This ancient icon is one of the best examples of the Byzantine school and has a rich history. It is associated with the name of Saint Sava the Sanctified, the founder of the Lavra, located near Jerusalem. Currently, the icon is located on Mount Athos, in a church belonging to the Hilendar monastery. In Russia, the “Mammal” is a very rare icon, although in 1860 a copy of it from Mount Athos was sent to the Kursk province and soon acquired miraculous power.

The discovery of another image of the Russian “Mammal” took place in 1650 - it was discovered on a tall tree twenty miles from the city of Minsk. It was on this site that the temple was built in honor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are many legends about the miraculous power of this icon; it helped in getting rid of various troubles and illnesses, and saved people during the Swedish invasion. The icon is rare and not very common in lists; it is not one of the famous and especially revered icons, but people pray to it and they know it. They usually pray in situations that can be guessed from the very name of the icon: when breastfeeding babies, in the absence of breast milk or its shortage, this miraculous image of the Mother of God is prayed for problems with lactation. They pray to the “Mammal” icon of the Mother of God even when it is necessary to painlessly wean a child from the breast.

Prayer

Oh, Most Holy Lady Theotokos, Most Pure and Merciful Mammal! Falling with love and reverence at Thy holy and miraculous image, in which we see all the Creator and Lord, like the Child nourished by Thy most pure milk, we bring praise and worship to Thy sinners and unworthy servants and we tearfully pray to Thee: do not leave us without Thy help and intercession ! Behold, we are weakened by sins and passions and perishing with spiritual hunger, we hunger and thirst for heavenly food. We are depleted of faith, good hope, love and piety. We are foolish and young-minded, we are always childish in our minds and actions, and we do not do the will of God; we understand below what is good or evil. But You, O Queen of Heaven, Nourisher of our life, covering the entire universe with the cover of Your mercy, feed us from the source of Your goodness with the milk of the knowledge of God, so that we may grow in the passion of God and humility. Thou art the myrrh poured out by Thy servant who loves Thee, water us with the dew of Thy Mother of God prayers, so that we may bring to God the fruits of repentance and an undefiled life. Strengthen us faint-hearted, enlighten us, darkened by sins, quench the rebellion of our passions, nourish us for eternal salvation, heal the infirmities of our nature and do not leave Your servants to perish until the end, for You are our only Intercessor and Hope, and all those who hope in You will not be ashamed. For through Your warm prayers on the day of the Last Judgment of Christ we will be delivered from future condemnation and endless torment, and let the chosen ones be honored with eternal joy and joy, in singing with all the saints Your Son, Christ our God, to Him belongs all glory and thanksgiving, honor and worship with the Beginning His Father and His Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

Think about the highest meaning attached to the image of a nursing Mother, but truly, every mother can be called the Nourisher of life! Pray to the Mother of God and the Saints for yourself and your child, cross him and yourself more often, because this certainly won’t make things worse, right?

The most effective prayer is on the day on which the icon is celebrated, but also on any other day, if you pray with faith and a warm soul, with humility and submission to the will of God, as the holy fathers teach, you will definitely feel the miraculousness of prayer. And popular wisdom teaches: “Trust in God, but don’t make a mistake yourself.” Therefore, if you really want to give birth, feed with your milk and raise healthy, beautiful children, then you will need, first of all, love - real, sacrificial love for your child, as well as patience, willpower and, of course, knowledge. Read, attend courses, lectures, seminars on pregnancy, do not avoid the help of specialists - now not only doctors, but also teachers, psychologists, and consultants on breastfeeding and baby care are ready to help young mothers. Many issues can be resolved over the phone or via the Internet. Don't hesitate to ask for help. Do your best.

Today, not only the church fathers recognize that from the moment of conception the fetus receives a soul from God and develops in accordance with his providence. The Bible describes the development of the fetus in the mother's womb as a creative act: “You formed my inward parts, and knitted me together in my mother’s womb” (Ps. 139.13, 15-16). After birth, the Creator’s creative work on the baby continues through breast milk, and the baby, with its mother’s milk, absorbs everything necessary for its development. Feeding on mother's milk, the child perceives the first lessons of love. Love with a capital letter. The Lord warns about the loss of such love, speaking about the end of the age: “Because iniquity will increase, the love of many will grow cold” (Matt. 24.12). Will an unjustified transition from natural feeding of infants to artificial feeding also contribute to this cooling?...

Vitamins and medications that increase lactation

During lactation, a woman’s body’s need for vitamins and microelements increases. The resulting relative hypovitaminosis can contribute to a decrease in breast function. Preference is given to multivitamin complexes containing retinol (vitamin A), tocopherol (vitamin E), thiamine (vitamin B1), ascorbic acid, microdoses of iodine, glutamic and lipoic acid. Among the biogenic stimulants, Apilak and Laktogon are used.

Considering that almost all medications pass into breast milk and, accordingly, into the baby, medications to increase lactation should be used only as prescribed by a doctor.

Christianity about breastfeeding

The question of how to feed a newborn baby began to arise sharply relatively recently, in the last century, with the development of civilization and the departure from naturalness.

Mentions of breastfeeding are found in the Bible, images of a nursing mother can be seen in icons, frescoes and paintings.

In order not to be unfounded, here are a few quotes:

“Breastfeeding is the first and most important responsibility of a new Christian mother towards her newborn. And she must fulfill it herself, imitating in this the great biblical wives: Sarah, Anna the prophetess, the mother of the prophet Moses and others (Gen. 21:7-8, Kings 1:22-24, Ex. 2:7-9, Thess.2:7), writes Bishop Barnabas (Belyaev) in the book “Fundamentals of the Art of Holiness.”

Sarah gave birth to a son, Isaac, at a very old age, and this did not stop her from breastfeeding him. “The child grew up and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned” (Gen. 21.8). By the way, in those days children were fed for a long time - at least 3 years, and after the end of feeding they held a big celebration.

The future prophet baby Moses, who was found by the daughter of an Egyptian pharaoh, was breastfed not by an Egyptian woman, but by his compatriot. And, probably, with milk he absorbed love and affection for his people. Breastfeeding is also discussed in the New Testament. One woman who believed in Christ exclaimed: “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts that nourished You!” (Luke 11.27).

In the Book of Psalms there is also a mention of breastfeeding: “You brought me out of the womb, you placed hope in me at my mother’s breast” (Ps. 21.10). The Explanatory Bible gives the following interpretation of these lines: “Probably David’s mother, when she was still breastfeeding him, spoke to him about God, and together with his mother’s milk he received a high concept of Him, reverence and devotion to Him.”

Another point: “The soul was within me like a weaned child” (Ps. 130.2). The commentary is: “Giving up all arrogant thoughts, the soul rests in God, like a baby after eating in the bosom of its mother.” This is how breastfeeding is symbolically depicted. The Song of Songs says: “Oh that you were my brother, who suckled my mother’s breasts!” (Song.8.1). That is, milk kinship is just as significant as blood kinship. There are also references to breastfeeding in the apostolic texts: “...we could appear with importance, like the Apostles of Christ, but we were quiet among you, just as a nurse tenderly treats her children” (1 Thess. 2.7).

A very succinct and vivid comparison of breastfeeding and the sacrament of communion is given by St. John of Kronstadt in the book “My Life in Christ”: “Is it surprising that the Lord offers you His Body and Blood for food and drink? Whoever gave you the flesh of the animals He created as food, He finally gave Himself as food and nourishment. Who fed you with your mother's breasts, He finally Himself undertook to feed you with His Flesh and Blood, so that, just as with your mother's milk you absorbed into yourself the known properties of your mother, her spirit, so with the Body and Blood of Christ the Savior you would absorb Him into yourself spirit and life.

Or, just as before in infancy you fed on your mother and lived on her, her milk, so now, having grown up and become a sinful person, you feed on the Blood of your Life-Giver, so that through this you would be alive and grow spiritually into a man of God, a saint; in short: so that, just as then you were the son of your mother, so now you would be a child of God, raised, nourished by His Flesh and Blood, and moreover by His Spirit - Flesh and Blood are His spirit and life - and become the heir of the Kingdom of Heaven, for which you and created for which you also live.” With regard to breastfeeding, the biography of the parents of St. Sergius of Radonezh, the holy schema-monk Cyril and schema-nun Maria is very interesting and indicative. “Meanwhile, the parents began to notice something unusual in the baby: if the mother happened to eat meat, the baby did not take her nipples.

On Wednesdays and Fridays he went without food at all. They thought the child was sick. But, however, having examined the baby from all sides, they saw that he was not sick and that there were no obvious or hidden signs of illness on him: he did not cry, did not moan, and was not sad. But with his face, his heart, and his eyes, the baby was cheerful and rejoiced in every possible way and played with his hands. Finally, they paid attention to the time when the baby did not accept the mother’s nipples.”

It turned out that during pregnancy, the mother of Sergius of Radonezh strictly observed fasts, and the baby got used to this state of affairs, so he required fasting after birth. When Mary began to observe fasting more strictly and completely stopped eating meat, the baby, except for Wednesday and Friday, days of fasting, always fed on her milk. And when he was given to another woman to nurse, he did not take the breast. He recognized only his mother's milk.

The Monk Epiphanius writes: “This was a sign meaning that from a good root a good branch should be nourished with undefiled milk. This child was a worshiper of the Lord from childhood, even in his mother’s womb and after birth he was inclined to piety and from the very diapers he knew the Lord, got used to fasting, and feeding on his mother’s milk, along with eating this milk he learned abstinence; and, being a child of age, he did not begin to fast like a child, and was raised in purity as a child, and was fed more piety than milk; and before his birth he was chosen by God...”

The icon of the Mother of God “Mammal,” which can often be seen in churches, reminds us that the Mother of God gave birth to and nursed the Lord Jesus Christ with milk. Therefore, this can be considered a standard of how things should be done. In this context, conscious refusal to breastfeed can be regarded as a crime against your child and before God.

Other ways to stimulate prolactin production. Lactation crisis

It should be noted that breast milk production is a cyclical process. There is a concept of lactation crises that occur every 1.5–2 months, when a woman’s milk supply may decrease slightly. In this situation, the most important thing is not to reduce the number of feedings, but, on the contrary, to put the baby to the breast a little more often. This stimulates milk production. And the child, as a rule, feels the approach of a lactation crisis and “stocks up” on food in advance, increasing his appetite a day or two before the start of a decline in lactation. You cannot refuse night feedings. Maximum production of prolactin occurs at night, and with proper stimulation by breastfeeding, lactation is easily restored.

These simple rules will allow you to give your baby the best gift - feeding with mother's milk. Feed for your health!

with a LACK of mother's milk.

0 June 2010, 19:12 Kazanochka writes: Alexandra Sorry for not writing for a long time. I have very good news, I didn’t call you, I know I have a lot of worries and absolutely no time. After we visited the chapel of the Royal Martyrs and after your prayers for us, my second sister is pregnant, this is simply a miracle after so many years... None of us had children, but here, in three years, I have two and my sisters have one each (I think this is not the limit). Once again thank you very much for your prayers. My son Nikolai, despite the fact that he is very small (almost 2 months), refuses to eat before communion, apparently feeling that he will be taken to communion (miracles). I am fulfilling your long-standing request to print a prayer for LACK of mother's milk. This is for all expectant and existing mothers. Rev. Hypatia of Pechersk, healer Troparion, tone 1 of this beginningless and quiet place, where there is no sorrow or sighing, to achieve, reverend, wanting, you did not give yourself any rest here, but day and night in all sorts of deeds and cruel life, laboriously laboring, abiding , I have already received what I wanted, Ipate, praying for our souls. Alexandra answers:

Save me, God! Very happy about you. I will move the prayer to the “Prayers” section. Rev. Hypatiy of Pechersk With a lack of mother's milk, the Mother of God Mammal Prayer: Receive, O Lady Theotokos, the tearful prayers of Your servants who flow to You. We see You on the holy icon, carrying in your arms and feeding with milk Your Son and our God, the Lord Jesus Christ. Even if you gave birth to Him painlessly, and even more so, you weighed the maternal sorrows and infirmities of the sons and daughters of human beings. With the same warmth falling upon Thy whole-bearing image and tenderly kissing this, we pray to Thee, All-Merciful Lady: we, sinners, condemned to give birth to sickness and nourish our children in sorrow, mercifully spare and compassionately intercede, but our babies, who also gave birth to them, from the grave deliver from illness and bitter sorrow. Grant them health and well-being, and their nourishment will increase in strength, and those who feed them will be filled with joy and consolation, for even now, through Your intercession from the mouth of a baby and those who piss, the Lord will bring His praise. O Mother of the Son of God! Have mercy on the mother of the sons of men and on Your weak people: quickly heal the illnesses that befall us, quench the sorrows and sorrows that are upon us, and do not despise the tears and sighs of Your servants. Hear us on the day of sorrow who fall before Your icon, and on the day of joy of deliverance, accept the grateful praise of our hearts. Offer our prayers to the throne of Your Son and our God, may He be merciful to our sin and weakness and add His mercy to those who lead His name, as we and our children will glorify You, the merciful Intercessor and the true hope of our race, forever and ever. . Amen.
