Temple of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

- a temple in Tolyatti, consecrated in the name of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God.

History of the temple in Tolyatti

In 1842, a high bell tower was built in the city of Stavropol. Its height was 55 meters. In the warm part of this bell tower, a temple was founded in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Later, in 1877, a temple was founded in the central part of the bell tower in honor of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God.

The bell tower was built near the Trinity Cathedral, which was closed in 1936, like most churches. Later, services in the cathedral resumed, but in 1955 the temple and the bell tower went under water, and the city of Stavropol was moved to another place - to the high bank of the river. A small prayer house was erected here, in which there were two parishes. The first (central) limit was consecrated in honor of the Kazan Icon, which is the patroness of the temple, and the second - in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. It was a small building 29 × 9.2 m, the consecration of which took place on February 15, 1955.

Church utensils, ancient icons and much more located in the old sunken church were saved. In the new house of worship, services were conducted by two priests and one deacon.

Other churches in Togliatti

Today in the city there are about 40 operating temples, churches, parishes and chapels, not counting prayer rooms. In the Central district of the city, in addition to the Church of the Mother of God of Kazan on Vavilov, there are 11 more churches and parishes in Togliatti, including the Resurrection Monastery and the chapel in honor of the Nativity of Christ.

There are 16 churches in Tolyatti in the Avtozavodsky district (19th quarter), and 11 in the Komsomolsky district of the city.

In terms of the number of churches and houses of worship, the 19th quarter (Avtozavodskoy district of the city) is the most saturated. At 19 Revolutsionnaya Street there is the Transfiguration Cathedral and the Church in honor of John the Baptist. The Transfiguration Cathedral is the largest and most beautiful temple in the city of Togliatti, built in modern times, date of construction - 1992-2002. The temple can accommodate more than 3000 people.

Kazan Church in Togliatti in the 70s

In 1960, Father Viktor Utekhin became the rector of the temple, and two years later Father Evgeniy Zubovich. The duties of the clergy included not only conducting services in the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Tolyatti, but also traveling to nearby villages to perform services.

After the city of Stavropol was renamed Togliatti in 1964, foreign delegations began to come to it, including from Italy. Many Italians, being Catholics, could not attend services, since there were no Catholic churches in the city. Father Eugene allowed Italians to come to his services. Catholic priests often attended Orthodox services in the church in Togliatti. They established friendship with Father Eugene.

It was in the seventies that Father Eugene asked the city authorities to add a bell tower to the church and install a telephone line. An asphalt road to the temple was also laid.

Later, it was planned to build a large temple on the site of the old prayer house. But due to the atheistic attitude of the authorities, this could not be achieved, despite numerous requests from the abbots of the temple in Tolyatti.

Icon of the Mother of God “Sovereign”

The Sovereign Icon is an icon of the Mother of God revered in the Russian Orthodox Church.

It was found, according to the report of Metropolitan Tikhon of Moscow, on March 2 (15), 1917 in the basement of the Church of the Ascension in the royal village of Kolomenskoye (now within Moscow).

According to a number of Orthodox interpreters, for example, Metropolitan Macarius, the symbolic meaning of the appearance of the “Sovereign” icon is that the death of the monarchy and subsequent political events were sent to the Russian people as part of the punishment for multiple sins, and in particular, according to Mikhail Dimitruk, for violation Council Oath of 1613; but the Mother of God herself, according to Sergei Fomin, preserves symbols of royal power, which gives hope for repentance and the revival of Russia and the Russian state. The akathist to the icon, in particular, says “Rejoice, for you always inspire us to wash away our sins with tears of repentance.”

On November 4, 2015, on the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and the Day of National Unity, Patriarch Kirill spoke about the meaning of the icon in a speech at the Manege Central Exhibition Hall in Moscow: “In the center of the exhibition you see the miraculous Sovereign image of the Mother of God.

It has a special history: this icon was found in the basement of the church in Kolomenskoye, now within the city of Moscow, on the day of the abdication of Emperor Nicholas II. When the image of the Mother of God sitting on the royal throne was raised, and when it became clear that the name of this image was “Sovereign,” then the best minds of Russia perceived this as a sign from God.

The king has left, but the Mother of God herself has led the country, and the Protection of the Mother of God is not removed from our Fatherland.”

Archbishop of the ROCOR Averky (Taushev) wrote several times in his various sermons about the meaning of the icon, for example: “That this is so and that the Mother of God did not completely take away Her cover over the Russian Land, this is apparently evidenced by the wondrous appearance of Her late miraculous icon on the very day of her renunciation from the throne of the Sovereign Emperor Nikolai Alexandrovich - March 2, 1917 - the Sovereign Mother of God. This icon represents the Mother of God in the royal crown, with a scepter and orb in her hands, in red clothes, as if soaked in blood, with a look in her eyes expressing sorrow. What could this mean if not that the Mother of God Herself took into Her hands the supreme royal power over the Russian Land, after the distraught Russian people rejected their Sovereign, the Anointed of God? And She looks with sorrow at the grave suffering of the Russian people, inevitably caused by their demonic possession, and patiently waits, like a true Mother, for their repentance and turning to God. Wake it up, wake it up!..."

Construction of a new temple

Archpriest Nikolai Manikhin, who was appointed rector in 1981, was able to obtain permission for construction. In 1985, in Togliatti, on the site of a prayer house with a bell tower, a large Church of the Theotokos of Kazan was erected. The church was built in one summer, and interior finishing work lasted a year and a half.

The construction of a new large temple was carried out in an era of shortage of building materials. There was practically no money allocated for the construction of churches. The secretary of the city executive committee, M. A. Popov, helped obtain the necessary building materials. He went to the city of Samara to the regional executive committee with a request for the allocation of 70,000 pieces. bricks The request was granted. This building material was quite sufficient for the construction of a new temple of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Tolyatti.

After the completion of the construction of the temple, Metropolitan Alexy, who later became the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', visited him. In honor of such an important event, a memorial plaque was installed in the church. The consecration of the new church took place in August 1987 by Archbishop John of Syzran and Kuibyshev.
