According to history, the holiday gained its existence thanks to the events that occurred on the 50th day after Easter, when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles and the Virgin Mary. In the afternoon they heard a noise, and immediately the blessed fire descended on them. It was after this incident that the apostles received the gift of speaking in different languages, and carried the preaching of Christ to nations around the world.
In the church this holiday is celebrated for three days. These days the priest wears green clothes, which symbolizes eternal life. Churches and temples are decorated with tree branches with foliage, and the floor is covered with green grass.
The third day of Trinity is considered the day of the Holy Spirit. And according to legend, churches bless water on this day. On this final day, people can take twigs from the temple and bring them home, where they are dried and stored until the next Trinity.
On the eve of the holiday, it is important to put your house in order, throw away unnecessary things and do a wet cleaning. Housewives also prepare bread, which has long been a symbol of fertility and prosperity.
And traditional healers try to collect medicinal herbs during the holiday. It is believed that at this time plants are endowed with special healing properties.
Trinity: what a holiday
The holiday in honor of the Holy Trinity is dedicated to the event described in the Gospel sources, which is called the Descent of the Holy Spirit. According to legend, on the 50th day after Easter, the apostles gathered in the Zion Upper Room in Jerusalem, as Jesus himself commanded them to do on the eve of his Ascension. When the apostles were in the Upper Room of Zion, they heard a powerful noise, reminiscent of the roar of an approaching hurricane, this sound quickly filled the entire room.
At this moment, as the Evangelist Luke , tongues of fire descended from heaven on the apostles, one for each. So, according to the Christian interpretation of this event, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples of Christ, after which the apostles began to speak in different languages that they did not know before. Thus, the disciples of Jesus got the opportunity to preach the teachings of Christ to different peoples.
It is believed that from that moment on, Christianity became a world religion, breaking away from its Jewish roots. The founder of the Church of Christ is considered to be the Apostle Peter , who, after receiving the gift of preaching in different languages, attracted thousands of new adherents to Christianity.
For Christians, the Trinity symbolizes the divine trinity: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ) and God the Holy Spirit, depicted as a dove.

From that day on, the message was preached throughout the entire earth. In general, the meaning of Trinity as a holiday is that God reveals himself to people in stages, and not all at once. In modern Christianity, the Trinity means that the Father, who created all living things, sent the Son, Jesus Christ, and then the Holy Spirit to people. For believers, the meaning of the Holy Trinity comes down to the praise of God in all his forms.

On this day, the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles is remembered. The Holy Spirit descended on the apostles as they gathered together in the Zion Upper Room in Jerusalem. Suddenly there was a loud noise from the sky, as if from a rushing strong wind, and this noise filled the entire house in which they were located. Then they all saw, as it were, splitting tongues of fire, and one tongue of fire rested on each of the apostles. The Holy Spirit who descended from heaven gave the apostles the grace of the priesthood to establish the church on earth, strength and intelligence to preach the Word of God throughout the world. Traditions of Trinity Saturday
Trinity Saturday is a very important day in Orthodoxy. It is believed that on the eve of Trinity, the living and the dead together celebrate the salvation of humanity by Jesus Christ in anticipation of the future general Resurrection. To bring this moment closer, the living offer prayers for dead Christians, primarily for their loved ones.
On this day in Rus', it was customary to visit temples, as well as cemeteries, arrange graves, decorating them with birch branches (the Russian symbol of the Trinity) and flowers. In Russia, it is still customary to visit churches and cemeteries on Trinity Sunday, decorate graves with birch branches and artificial flowers, and light candles or lamps.
There is also a very ancient and tenacious folk custom, not approved by the church, but a very ancient and enduring folk custom: to commemorate the dead directly in the cemetery, leaving food and even glasses of alcohol for them on the graves. As a rule, after such impromptu funerals, various sweets, sometimes quite expensive, are left on the graves. It is not forbidden for beggars or passers-by to take these delicacies. You can eat what you take, but you cannot take it out of the cemetery; it is considered forbidden.
After visiting a cemetery in Rus', it was customary to have a memorial meal at home on Trinity Saturday or Trinity Sunday. Historically, such meals were shared by the entire community, they were organized in nature, spreading tablecloths on the ground. Traditional funeral Slavic dishes are pancakes, eggs and scrambled eggs, ritual sweet porridge (kutya), jelly, and specially brewed beer. It was not customary to drink strong alcohol at funerals; drunkards were severely condemned. Meat is allowed - this is a major Christian holiday, which occurs during the meat-eater period (before the start of Peter's Lent).

Mermaid pranks
This period, starting from Trinity, and in pre-Christian times - from the beginning of June, is called Rusalia. Our Slavic ancestors believed that at this time it was too early to swim in open reservoirs, since the water was still cold and unclean. At the same time, according to superstitions, mermaids awakened by the first warmth can not only drag an early swimmer to the bottom, but also plot various tricks on earth. They get out of ponds to bask, sit in trees, scare people, and send diseases to livestock. Sometimes the awakened mermaids are joined by their owner, the merman, and all this “wet” evil spirits make noise, sing songs, play tricks, and harm crops and livestock. To calm the mermaids and drive them back into the water, the evil spirits were frightened by fires that people lit on the hills and banks of reservoirs, noise, screams and spells.
What not to do on Trinity Saturday and Trinity
On Trinity, you should not indulge in “feasts” at graves, get carried away with alcohol, and also, according to popular belief, you should not swim or even go near bodies of water, or go into the forest, so as not to fall into the hands of mermaids and other aquatic evil spirits.
In Rus' on this day, all manipulations with water were prohibited: not only washing, but even washing and bathing children. It was forbidden to cut your hair, women's handicrafts and the general use of sharp metal objects were prohibited, and cleaning the house, especially wet cleaning, was strictly prohibited.
Fortune telling for marriage
On Trinity days in Rus', girls told fortunes about suitors and marriage. One of the most famous fortune telling is to curl a birch tree. In the week before Trinity, girls wove braids from thin birch branches leaning down right on the trees. On Trinity Sunday they checked - if the braid is intact, it’s time to prepare for the matchmakers’ meeting; unraveled - you will have to wait at least another year for marriage.
Another popular fortune telling is with wreaths. The girls wove wreaths from the first wildflowers or from birch branches, put them on their heads, and then, as if by accident, “shaken them” into the water. Where the wreath floated, the betrothed will appear from there; the wreath swirled near the shore - a long girlhood awaits the owner; unraveled or drowned - trouble cannot be avoided.
Folk signs for Trinity
Beliefs and rituals have always been an integral part of any religious celebration. Trinity is no exception. Almost always this holiday was celebrated in the first month of summer; this moment was quite significant for every conscientious peasant. A lot depended on what the weather would be like on Trinity Sunday.
After all, heavy rainfall contributed to the appearance of lush vegetation and nourished the depleted soil, which in turn meant that the peasant would reap a good harvest. One of the most ancient beliefs is the custom during which bunches of “tear” herbs are always brought to the temple. This is a grass that was originally mourned, in this case the tears were a symbol of rain.
Coming to the temple with such bunches, the people asked God to grant a summer without drought, so that there would be rain, so that the earth would be saturated with it and the harvest would be rich. The sign says that if you follow this custom and then hide the bunches behind icons, you will have a good harvest.
Another belief says that you can attract wealth to yourself and get a good harvest by placing several birch branches on the window and spreading green grass on the windowsill. One of the worst omens was working for Trinity. On this holiday, peasants were strictly forbidden to work in the fields, wash or clean.
All that was allowed was to cook food. It is worth noting that it was also forbidden to swim in reservoirs, since at this time mermaids are especially active and can even drag people into their kingdom.
It was considered a very bad omen on the Saturday before Pentecost not to go to the cemetery and not remember all the dead. Our ancestors believed that those who did not honor the memory of the dead would invite them to the world of the living. Not only will the spirits of the dead come, they may also take away their world from someone alive.
Another strange sign is that the clothes of deceased relatives were hung on the fence in order to ward off death. The belief says that if you go to a relative’s grave on Trinity Sunday and sweep everything around with a birch broom, then the person will be happy. Our ancestors were sure that such manipulations would drive away all evil spirits. Also, these actions contributed to enrichment, peace and understanding in relations between fellow villagers.
The ancestors were convinced that if a young man wooed on Trinity, and the marriage was concluded on the Intercession, then the family would be strong, and the husband and wife would love each other. Rain on Trinity is also an old common omen. The ancestors believed that it would bring a harvest, good weather and a winter without severe frosts.
Trinity fortune telling
Although representatives of the church are trying with all their might to deny any magical rituals, divination and condemn them, it just so happens that our ancestors could not deny themselves the desire to look into the future. They believed that the highest powers would give the most clear answer if they cast a spell on Christmas, Epiphany and Trinity.
The ancestors believed that during this period the girl would find out exactly who her future husband was. There are several fortune tellings that were popular at Pentecost. On the evening before Trinity, the girl had to go into the forest, bend a thin young birch tree and weave a wreath from the branches. At the same time, the branches did not break off.
If the next morning the birch tree straightened or the wreath was damaged, then this year the girl was not destined to meet her love and walk down the aisle. If the birch tree remained the same, then there will be plenty of money, happiness, and marriage soon.
Another equally ancient fortune telling was accompanied by the weaving of wreaths. The ritual was carried out by several girls; men were not allowed into such divination. It was believed that if a male representative saw someone’s wreath, he would put the evil eye on the girl.
The fortune telling was that on Trinity Day, young beauties made wreaths and walked with them to the pond. After this, the magical attributes were placed on the water. It was believed that in which direction the wreath floated, the blessed one would arrive from there. If the magical attribute did not move, then the wedding could not be held this year; if it went under water, the girl would become very ill or die.
An important point in carrying out this fortune telling: the wreath cannot be removed from your head with your hands; the girl must bend over so that it falls into the water. In addition, the girls put birch branches under their pillows and asked that at night they would dream about the betrothed-mummer.
