Parents' Saturday 2021: when is it celebrated, history and traditions, what can and cannot be done

June 19 is the day of remembrance of all Orthodox Christians who have ever died, called Trinity Saturday or Ecumenical Parental Saturday. A general memorial service is held annually on the eve of Trinity - one of the main Christian holidays, which is one of the twelve.

It is believed that on this day the Lord hears prayers even for souls who do not go to heaven. Therefore, it is very important to visit church on Trinity Saturday, pray and light candles for the repose of the souls of your dead.

When is it customary in Orthodoxy to remember the dead?

On the eve of Lent and the Feast of Trinity , Orthodox Christians remember the departed; these days are called memorial parental Saturdays. Ecumenical Parental Saturday , celebrated before Maslenitsa (the week before Lent), is called winter, or meat-free (the day after it until Easter, meat products are prohibited for believers). Trinity (summer) Parents' Saturday falls on June 6 in 2021.

Is it possible to make love on Radonitsa?

The Church does not prohibit carnal pleasures between spouses on any day, except for the time allotted for fasting. For those outside of marriage, any sexual intercourse according to the Bible is considered fornication.

The first letter of the Apostle Paul to the Church in Corinth read: “To avoid fornication, each one have his own wife, and each one have his own husband. The husband show his wife due favor; likewise is a wife to her husband. The wife has no power over her body, but the husband does; Likewise, the husband has no power over his body, but the wife does. Do not deviate from each other, except by agreement, for a while, to practice fasting and prayer, and then be together again, so that Satan does not tempt you with your intemperance.”

Meat-eating Saturday: history and traditions

The first mention of the rules for commemorating the dead on the eve of Lent appeared in the 7th century. Meat Saturday is also called Little Maslenitsa, since it is celebrated before the main Maslenitsa. On this day, it is customary to pray for all Christians, as well as for deceased loved ones, who are asked in prayer to forgive all earthly sins.

On this day, Orthodox Christians in churches and at home commemorate their deceased parents and other loved ones, as well as all deceased Christians. Grief on this day is light, because the souls of the dead are already in the best of all worlds.

These days a person does not ask for anything for himself

People in our country love and honor two holidays most of all: in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the days of remembrance of the dead. On these holidays, the most people come to the temple. For example, the beheading of John the Baptist or the celebration of the day of Peter and Paul are no longer so popular. There is no respect for those who do not treat anything, do not help with money and housing issues, in their personal lives, in work, in health matters. That is, the consumerist attitude towards the Church and the saints is ineradicable in our country and will always be there. Even when we pray for loved ones, friends, patrons, children, we still pray for our comfort in one way or another. But commemoration of the dead is a holiday when a person does not demand anything for himself. These are the days of selfless love. We can say that it is through this prayer that the image of a Christian is formed.

There are cases like this. The service has already ended, and out of breath people are running into the church, bringing bread and food: “Oh, the service is already over, right? We are sleeping here, and my mother came in a dream. He says: “Are you sleeping on a day like this? Have you forgotten about me? What day is it today? Ah, Parental. “It is not uncommon for the deceased to remind themselves of themselves. But here again something pagan is observed - my grandmother came to me in a dream, hugged me by the shoulders and said: “Come on, granddaughter...” This means that I urgently need to run to the temple and light candles, preferably three at once, so that my grandmother will not come again in my dream. It looks like you want to buy her off...

Saint Athanasius (Sakharov), Bishop of Kovrov, wrote the book “On the Commemoration of the Dead.” And there he examines all these questions in detail. I recommend reading it.

Folk traditions of commemorating the dead

According to folk traditions , on this day it was customary to bake pancakes - one of the most important traditional Slavic dishes. Pancakes could be made with milk and eaten with butter and sour cream.

Pancakes on Meat-Fast Memorial Saturday were baked not only for the living, but also for the dead. The first pancake was placed on the shelf with the icons, the second - on the windowsill, as if inviting the deceased to join the meal. It was also customary to bring pancakes to the cemetery to “feed the dead” (the church does not approve of the ritual of “feeding the dead”, considering it an echo of paganism); pancakes were also distributed to the poor.

After cleaning their homes, visiting the church, where funeral services are held on this day, and the cemetery, people held funeral meals at home, at which their deceased loved ones invisibly “companced” with the living. The meal, as a rule, was made plentiful, always with an odd number of dishes.

How to pray correctly

There are no specific rules for reading such prayers. The main conditions are faith and sincerity. It is best to pray in front of holy icons.

They read the prayer silently or in a whisper, both within the walls of the temple during a visit, and at home.

The church does not commemorate suicides or the unbaptized by name. In common prayer, when we come to church to pray, we can present any petitions to the Lord God in our hearts, in our minds. Of course, when a person has deceased who have not been baptized, or deceased who have committed suicide, one cannot forbid turning to the Lord in mental prayer - the Lord himself knows who and how to determine in the afterlife.

What dishes are put on the table on Parents' Saturday?

Among the dishes of the meal on Parents' Saturday, the main place is traditionally occupied by kutia - a funeral sweet porridge made from wheat, rice or other cereals with the addition of honey, raisins and nuts. Also on the table there should traditionally be funeral jelly and pancakes - that is, dishes that are usually placed on the table during a funeral.

Signs about children's hair

Previously, children did not have their hair cut until they were seven months old. Now the time limit has become longer: the first haircut awaits the baby at one year. It is considered mandatory. This hair was previously stored in special bags. They were hung around the necks of seriously ill relatives to help overcome the disease.

For an older child, another sign about hair will be useful - you should not wash your hair before an exam or test. It is believed that this way you can wash knowledge out of your head. This also applies to haircuts: do not allow children to change the length of their curls until they pass the learned material.

If a child is born with hair on his head, the sign promises him a happy life.

What not to do on Mother's Meat Saturday

On this day, meat products are prohibited (meat can be eaten for the last time before Easter on Sunday). On Memorial Saturday, it is forbidden to worry too much about the dead who have already seen the kingdom of God. As on any Orthodox holiday, swearing, quarrels, evil thoughts, even arguments are prohibited . In addition, in Russia it was not customary to work , including around the house. It was recommended to prepare for the holiday in advance - to properly clean the house and prepare the main dishes of the funeral meal.

After Parents' Saturday, the main preparations for Maslenitsa began, which in Rus' was customary to spend cheerfully and even riotously. Read about the traditions of Maslenitsa in the materials of the Federal News Agency .

Ancient superstitions about hair

When a woman, many hundreds of years ago, wanted to change her life, she cut her hair. In some regions, after the wedding, the bride’s hair was cut off, sometimes even shaved bald.

Hair is like some kind of antenna that connects a person with the cosmos, helping to receive information from it. The longer they are, the better the energy exchange and connection with the Universe. However, many would like to get rid of unnecessary worries and negativity, and a haircut can help with this. The more hair you cut, the more information will be lost.

She had her hair cut from the moment she found out she was expecting a baby until she gave birth. And today this sign is observed by many. In the distant past, cut hair was burned, stored in a special bag and placed in a coffin after the death of the owner.

In the old days, a strand of a strong guy's hair was woven into a whip. People believed that with improved tools it would be easier for the shepherd to manage the flock.

Hair was for men and beauty for women. Therefore, even combing them was considered a rather harmful activity. The girls did this only once a week - after the bath.

The comb has always been an exclusively personal item. She was not trusted with anyone.

The consequences of combing someone else's hair are the transfer of troubles and illnesses to its owner.

They carefully monitored the fallen hair and tried to collect it from the comb, clothes and floor. They believed that this was a tasty prey for evil spirits, which was just waiting to harm. or . This is another reason to keep an eye on lost hairs and burn them.

Now many people throw them down the drain, but our ancestors believed that hair in water means baldness in old age. You can’t go outside either: a bird might pick them up for a nest, which could lead to a headache. Burying in the ground means illness.

If during burning the hair smolders and does not burn, this foreshadows the imminent death of its owner, indicates severe damage or other negativity. You should protect yourself by taking the necessary precautions.

After sunset, combing and braiding were not done so as not to lose beauty. They did not do this during eclipses of the Sun and Moon, so as not to get sick or go crazy.

If hair begins to grow high on the temples and low on the forehead, this is a sign of long life. A strand of hair gets knocked out - a long journey awaits. A feather in your hair in the morning means that someone has fallen in love with you.

In order for your hair to look good and grow, you should get caught in the first spring rain. And if you are afraid that there is an evil eye, wash your hair. This helps against weak energy attacks, because the hair is the first to take the blow.

Signs answer in a similar way the question of why hair gets tangled in knots. They have always been considered a symbol of magic and witches’ “handicraft.” If knots appear in your hair, it means that someone is trying to change you or your destiny against your will. This is damage or even curses. In the old days they were cut and burned. Sometimes the brownie gets his hair tangled. On the site you can find out and discourage you from this activity.
