The Metropolitan Cathedral is a cathedral in honor of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity. Located on Mount Sludka. Previously, the first bicycle track with asphalt pavement in the Urals was created at this very place. A little later there was a stadium.

The Metropolitan Cathedral is a cathedral in honor of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity. Located on Mount Sludka, built in 1842 at the suggestion of the merchant Yegor Ivanovich Shavkunov

But in August 1842, at the suggestion of the merchant Yegor Ivanovich Shavkunov, it was decided to erect a new three-altar church with two chapels on this very spot. The main expenses associated with the construction of the temple were borne by Shavkunov himself. It was also planned to announce a collection of donations among city residents. Shavkunov's son began the construction of the Holy Trinity Church on Sludka with funds left by his father.

In 1849, one chapel was consecrated - in the name of the Great Martyr George. The southern aisle was consecrated in 1850 - in the name of the prophet of God Elijah. And in 1857, the main chapel of the temple was consecrated - in honor of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity.

A parochial school was consecrated at the church in 1906. During the war, repressions began against believers and clergy. All money and church valuables were taken away from the temple. In the 30s, the priest and deacon were repressed, and the temple was closed.

    1960

this year the parochial school was consecrated

In 1932, the temple housed the warehouses of the People's Commissariat of Defense, where weapons were stored. Four side chapters of the bell tower were demolished. On May 25, 1944, the temple was returned to believers and was re-consecrated by Bishop Alexander Tolstopyatov.

The temple became a cathedral throughout the city. For a very long time, the Russian Orthodox Church of Perm, with a population of one million, had only the Sludskaya Church and the Cemetery. In 2004, work began to restore the interior and exterior of the temple. On November 23, the Great Consecration of the main altar took place.

    Perm Metropolis

In 1657, by order of Patriarch Nikon, the Vyatka diocese was established

In the 16th century, one can still see remnants of pagan rituals, which naturally forced the Moscow authorities to be cautious. In December 1657, by order of Patriarch Nikon, the Vyatka diocese was established.

In December 1657, by order of Patriarch Nikon, the Vyatka diocese of the Perm region was established

It began its activities with the arrival of the first Bishop Alexander in the cathedral city in 1658. The Great Moscow Council decided to establish the Perm diocese.

After which the composition of the Vyatka diocese and the Perm lands became part of the Veliky Ustyug diocese. On October 16, 1799, by decree of the Russian Emperor Paul the First, the Perm diocese was formed to strengthen church influence.

On the territory of the Perm diocese, the Vyatka and Tobolsk diocese were separated.

The Perm See received its first bishop - Bishop John Ostrovsky. Immediately after the establishment of the department, the Perm Theological Seminary appeared. Later, a three-class theological school appeared at the Perm Theological Seminary.

At the beginning of the 20th century, several new dioceses began to be formed on the territory of the Perm diocese: Solikamsk diocese, Kungur vicariate, Osinsk, Okhansk and other dioceses. In 2014, the Solikamsk diocese and the Kudymkar diocese were separated from the Perm diocese.

    Diocese

    From the history

The history of the Perm diocese begins long before its establishment, when the Perm region, in church-canonical terms, was under the supervision of the Vologda and Vyatka hierarchs.

On October 29 (New Art), 1799, a decree of Emperor Paul was signed on the establishment of the Perm diocese. The first bishop, Bishop John (Ostrovsky), ascended to the Perm See.

Soon after the establishment of the diocese, intensive church construction and the establishment of monasteries began in it. By 1917, there were up to 700 Orthodox churches in the diocese, including city, rural, monastic cathedrals and churches, as well as stone and wooden chapels. Of the monasteries, the most famous was the Belogorsk St. Nicholas Missionary Monastery, founded under Bishop Peter (Losev). Nicknamed the Ural Athos, the monastery became famous for the high life of its inhabitants and tireless educational activities.

The Perm diocese was famous for its missionary work. Missionary and educational work have been the main focus of activity throughout the 200-year local church history.

In 1868, shortly before the death of Bishop Neophytos (Sosnin), Perm was visited by an outstanding missionary, St. Innocent of Moscow (Veniaminov).

The Perm diocese also became famous for its saints: St. Stephen of Great Perm, who baptized the Perm region, his successors St. Gerasim, Pitirim and Jonah, St. Meletius (later Kharkovsky). During the years of persecution by the atheistic authorities, the Hieromartyr Andronik, the Hieromartyr Theophan, the Venerable Martyr Varlaam with the brethren of the Belogorsk Monastery, and with them a whole host of new martyrs, canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000, were awarded the crown of martyrdom.

In 1800, the diocese had its own theological school - the Perm Theological Seminary. Many wonderful people of both spiritual and secular ranks have emerged from the walls of the Theological Seminary. It is enough to name Russian writers D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak, P. P. Bazhov, radio inventor A. S. Popov, mathematician I. M. Pervushin, who served as a priest all his life. Among the graduates from the seminary are professors from St. Petersburg, Warsaw, Yuryev Universities, St. Petersburg Technological and Alexander Agricultural Institutes, the Military Medical Academy, Doctors of Philosophy from the Universities of Berlin and Munich, and many doctors of medicine.

The 19th century brought new changes to the life of the Perm diocese. In 1880, an episcopal department was established in Perm and the first bishop, John, was appointed.

In the period from 1868 to 1876. The Assumption Convent and St. John the Baptist Convent in Kungur open in Perm.

1904 is memorable for the diocese as the year when the future holy righteous John of Kronstadt visited Perm.

At this time, revolutionary unrest began in distant Moscow. They reached the Urals late, but still could not help but affect the mentality of Perm society. Some monasteries were closed for no particular reason. This was just a drop from the wave that was supposed to hit the prosperous Perm and Solikamsk diocese in a few years...

Before the revolution, the Perm diocese consisted of about 630 churches, 405 chapels, and 8 monasteries.

Everything collapsed overnight. The October Revolution swept through the country like a natural disaster, and Perm did not escape the common fate. In those years, the diocese was temporarily ruled by the vicar of Bishop Andronik, Theophan. The Bolsheviks mercilessly dealt with the “leader of obscurantism”: the bishop was cruelly tortured and, wanting to prolong his torment, they threw him into the Kama while still alive. Now Vladyka Theophan is glorified among the saints.

In April 1918, Vladyka Andronik returned from Moscow. His courage, honesty and duty as a shepherd, which he could not neglect, forced him to enter into a decisive struggle with the new authorities. He protected churches from looting, forbade the Bolsheviks to mock the faith, called them to their faces enemies of the Church, and did not give in to persuasion. Naturally, the authorities quickly got tired of the obstinate bishop, and they dealt with him with inhuman cruelty: Vladyka Andronik was buried alive in the ground. The executioners cynically divided among themselves the “trophies” remaining from the martyr - a cast-iron watch, a panagia and a gilded chain.

The Soviet government sought to destroy everything that was connected with patriarchal Russia, everything that could not be melted down and turned into money. The most precious icons, masterpieces of wooden architecture, without any regret, were sent to the furnace by anti-clericals, crazy with permissiveness. Only by miracle, no other than God's providence, were it possible to save some of the relics, which are now carefully preserved in the museum. The invaluable merit of Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar, the famous restorer and connoisseur of ancient Russian art, who came to Perm in the 20s. His authoritative opinion helped limit the Bolshevik arbitrariness, and it was thanks to him that a unique collection of carved wooden sculpture from the 16th – 19th centuries remained intact, the likes of which are not found in any city in Russia.

The diocese survived Khrushchev's reign with great losses. And who knows what her fate would have been like if changes had not followed in the country again. The beginning of the archpastoral service of Bishop Athanasius coincided with both the beginning of perestroika and the beginning of the revival of the diocese. In the last years of the 20th century, over 130 new parishes, 7 monasteries, and dozens of Sunday schools were opened in the Kama region.

Since May 2002, the department was headed by Bishop Irinarch of Perm and Solikamsk. During his service at the Perm See, many churches were restored, and the diocese became known as one of the largest in Russia in terms of the number of monasteries.

Metropolitan Methodius of Perm and Solikamsk

Metropolitan Methodius was born on February 16, 1949 in the city of Rovenki, Voroshilovograd (now Lugansk) region, into a family of employees.

After receiving secondary education, he entered the Slavic Technical School of Railway Transport, which he graduated in 1968. In 1972 he graduated from the Odessa Theological Seminary and continued his spiritual education at the Leningrad Theological Academy. After graduating from the LDA in 1976, a patriarchal scholarship holder with a candidate of theology degree for the essay “Missionary Works of Metropolitan Innokenty (Veniaminov) of Moscow and Kolomna, Apostle of America,” was accepted into graduate school at the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1976, he led a youth delegation of representatives of theological schools of the Russian Orthodox Church that visited Finland, Bulgaria and Holy Mount Athos.

On January 5, 1974, Metropolitan Nikodim of Leningrad and Novgorod was tonsured into monasticism with the name Methodius, in honor of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Methodius, and then on January 7, in the St. Nicholas Cathedral of the Epiphany in Leningrad, he was ordained a hierodeacon. On April 24 of the same year, in the Church of the Holy Apostle Philip in Novgorod, Metropolitan Nikodim ordained him as a hieromonk.

Simultaneously with his postgraduate studies, since 1976 he carried out pastoral obedience in the church of the Moscow Novodevichy Convent. At the same time, he was enrolled in the staff of the Department of External Church Relations as a referent, and on April 4, 1977, by decision of the Holy Synod, he was appointed deputy chairman of the DECR and elevated to the rank of archimandrite. Since September 1979, he served in the small cathedral of the Donskoy Monastery and in the Moscow Church of the Placing of the Lord.

By the decree of His Holiness Patriarch Pimen and the Holy Synod of April 24, 1980, Archimandrite Methodius (Nemtsov) was determined to be the Bishop of Irkutsk and Chita, temporarily governing the Khabarovsk diocese.

On April 26 he was named, and on April 27 he was consecrated Bishop of Irkutsk and Chita in the Sergius Refectory Church of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.

Since July 16, 1982 - Bishop of Voronezh and Lipetsk. From 1985 to 1989, in addition to managing the diocese, he headed the financial and economic management of the Moscow Patriarchate.

On July 26, 1985 he was elevated to the rank of archbishop.

In 1986-1988, he was a member of the anniversary commission for the preparation and holding of the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus' (he was entrusted with the preparation and material support of the festivities).

In 1988, he was appointed chairman of the responsible commission for the restoration and construction of the St. Daniel Monastery in Moscow. In April of the same year, for his efforts in preparing and holding the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus', he was elevated to the rank of metropolitan.

From May 7, 2003 to March 5, 2010 - head of the metropolitan district in Kazakhstan.

By the resolution of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church of March 5, 2010, Metropolitan Methodius was determined to be the Metropolitan of Perm and Solikamsk.

Readers are offered a number of interviews with people working in various fields of activity and service for the benefit of the Russian Orthodox Church - with monastery abbots, icon painters, musicians, etc. A special place in the newspaper is occupied by apologetic columns aimed at protecting Orthodoxy from heretical teachings, on revealing the anti-spiritual essence of destructive cults. Let's honor the shrine!

From January 2 to February 17, 2011, in the Perm diocese there will be an ark with a particle of the venerable relics of the holy blessed Matrona of Moscow. Residents of many regions of Russia have already had the blessed opportunity to bow before this revered shrine. For them, prayer to Mother Matrona became a blessed source of consolation and spiritual support.

People resort to the intercession of this saint in cases of illness and disease, difficult life circumstances, family troubles and problems. Evidence of the gracious power of Blessed Matrona’s intercession before the Throne of the Lord for many decades has been the miracles granted to people after praying to her.

The ark with a particle of relics arrived on January 2 at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in the city of Perm, where it will remain until February 17. In front of the shrine, prayers are held daily to the holy blessed Matrona for people in need of help and support.
