Minsk diocese. The first diocese on the territory of Belarus

Orthodoxy in Belarus is as widespread as on our Russian soil. The Minsk diocese is a diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, which is located on the territory of Belarus.

“...For Orthodox believers, the Church of the Holy Spirit in the city of Minsk is an abode of faith, goodness and warmth, and for history buffs it is an architectural masterpiece. Doesn't leave you indifferent. A special atmosphere of spirituality. I advise everyone to visit..."

Resurrection Cathedral in the city of Borisov, Minsk region

The Minsk diocese was established on April 13, 1793

The Minsk diocese was established on April 13, 1793. The Minsk diocese united Orthodox parishes in lands that were annexed to Russia under the second partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and which were located on the borders of modern Belarus and Ukraine.

At the very beginning, the department of the ruling bishop was in Slutsk; it was moved only in 1795. However, only the 19th century church historian Stepan Runkevich reports this.

Soon the Minsk diocese accepted into its composition the regions that had ceded to Russia.

During the third division of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, it eventually became larger than all the dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church. It was at the end of the 18th century that many millions of Uniates reunited with the Orthodox Church, which had a great impact on the number of parishes, clergy and parishioners.

In 1995, the Zhytomyr Vicariate was established. At the beginning of the 1950s, Metropolitan of Minsk became the only ruling bishop in the entire Belarusian SSR. The territory of the Minsk region covered almost the entire territory of the republic.

  • In 1992, the borders of the Minsk diocese coincided with the borders of the Minsk region

Soon the Mogilev, Pinsk and Polotsk dioceses were separated from the Belarusian Minsk diocese. The formation of new dioceses took place in several stages. In 1992, the borders of the Minsk diocese coincided with the borders of the Minsk region.

On October 23, 2014, at a meeting of the Holy Synod, a decision was made to establish the Minsk Metropolis within the boundaries of the Minsk diocese.

    October 23, 2014

on this day the decision was made to establish the Minsk Metropolis

Thus, the Borisov, Molodechno and Slutsk dioceses were separated from its composition. Each composition of these dioceses included its own parishes. This is how the territorial borders of the entire Minsk diocese began to be limited to the Minsk region.

The established Minsk Metropolis began to cover the Minsk, Borisov, Molodechno and Slutsk dioceses. The Borisov diocese has its ruling bishop, Veniamin.

Archimandrite Pavel was elected bishop of the Molodechno diocese. Archimandrite Anthony, a cleric of the Minsk diocese, was elected Bishop of Slutsk and Soligorsk. Metropolitan Pavel, Patriarch and Exarch of All Belarus, was appointed bishop of the entire Minsk diocese and head of the Minsk metropolis.

There are many great shrines on the territory of the Minsk Metropolitanate

It is also worth noting that the metropolis has its own shrines, for example, the cross of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk, which was created in 1161 by order of the daughter of Prince Svyatoslav of Polotsk. The Minsk Icon of the Mother of God is also kept - this is one of the main shrines of Belarus, which is located in the Minsk Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Spirit.

Cross of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk. Photo: nasledie-sluck.by

The Minsk diocese also has saints who became famous on this land, for example, the Holy Righteous Sophia, Princess of Slutsk, Hieromartyr Mitrofan, Bishop of Astrakhan and Tsarevsky, Hieromartyr Vladimir Hirasko, Hieromartyr John Archbishop of Paris and many others.

One of the main cathedrals of the city of Minsk, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit

One of the main cathedrals of the Minsk diocese is the Minsk Holy Spirit Cathedral. Everyone who comes to this area cannot help but turn their attention to this wonderful work of art.

The first information about this temple dates back to the beginning of the 15th century. It was first mentioned in many historical documents of the early 17th century. Initially it was a monastery in the name of the unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian.

Minsk Holy Spirit Cathedral. Photo: hranitel.club

Information about the existence of other monasteries and churches has also been preserved, for example, there was the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Church of the Ascension of the Savior, St. George and many others.

The history of this particular cathedral begins in 1633. Initially, this building was built and served as a temple for the Catholic Bernardine monastery. In 1741, the building was badly damaged by fire, which was the reason for its reconstruction. In 1858 the temple was moved to Nesvizh.

Nesvizh is one of the cities in the Minsk region.

Then in 1550 the temple was rebuilt more than once. In 1869, Archbishop Alexander allocated the necessary funds to bring the temple into better shape, and opened an Orthodox monastery on this site.

An amount of 13,000 rubles was allocated, half of which was used for repairs and installation of a new iconostasis. The opening of the temple took place on January 4, 1870. The library and many other properties were transferred to this place.

The lighting of the cathedral in honor of the Descent of the Holy Spirit took place on October 22, 1870

In 1870, in the month of May, it was ordered by the Holy Synod that the monastery founded in Minsk be called the Holy Spiritual Monastery. Its illumination in honor of the Descent of the Holy Spirit took place on October 22, 1870.

    October 22, 1870

on this day the Church of the Holy Spirit in Minsk was consecrated

In November of the same year, the right side chapel of the temple was consecrated in the name of Saints Methodius and Cyril. The temple existed only until 1922. The cathedral was closed very often during the period of Soviet power, but believers were able to resume worship there.

This is how the Holy Spirit Cathedral, which belongs to the Minsk Metropolis, currently looks like

After the cathedral could be slightly prepared for services, Bishop Philotheus consecrated it. Soon after Minsk was liberated from the German occupation, the Soviet authorities closed one of the main churches of the city of Minsk, the Peter and Paul Cathedral. That is why the Holy Spirit Cathedral became the first cathedral church of the Minsk diocese.

After the cathedral was opened in 1942, it never closed again. In 1945, the miraculous Minsk icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary was transferred from the Peter and Paul Cathedral to this temple. Later, crosses were installed above the cathedral.

In 1950, the interior and exterior decoration of the temple was completed, and in 1968, a throne was installed in the southern part of the cathedral in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. In the northern part of the temple they placed a shrine with the relics of Righteous Sophia, Princess of Slutsk.

In 1961, the temple in honor of the Holy Spirit was given the status of a cathedral.

At the end of the 80s of the 20th century, the candidate of theological sciences, Evgeniy Grushevsky, served here, who became one of the best priests of the Minsk Cathedral. It was with his participation that the millennium of the baptism of Rus' took place.

On December 25, 1990, the first procession of the cross during the ten-year period of inactivity took place in Minsk, which went from the Holy Spirit Cathedral to the newly illuminated Church of Mary Magdalene. Particles of her relics were transferred there.

On May 21, 2019, the ark containing the right hand of the holy martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth and a particle of the relics of the martyr nun Barbara stayed in the church

Currently, the Holy Spirit Church is the cathedral Orthodox cathedral of the city of Minsk. Its iconostasis contains a number of valuable icons of the Moscow academic school. On one of these rows there is a miraculous icon of the Mother of God, which was found in 1500.

The Gomel diocese belongs to the Minsk Metropolis

Just as was said earlier, the Minsk Metropolis has other dioceses. One of them is the famous Gomel diocese. This is one of the dioceses that belongs to the Gomel region. It unites dean districts and monasteries in the eastern part. In its parish it has 149 parishes and 181 clergy.

The Church of the Archangel Michael belongs to the Gomel diocese of the Minsk Metropolis. Photo: sobory.ru

The Minsk Metropolis also owns the Borisov diocese

There is also a Borisov diocese. The diocese owns the administrative borders of Berezinsky, Borisovsky, Krupsky and other districts of the Minsk region of Belarus. It is also part of the Minsk Metropolis. This diocese was established in 2002.

The Diocese of Minsk is one of the famous dioceses in our time. The Orthodox Church is spreading throughout the regions of Belarus, which has a very good effect on its development. It is worth saying that it is not bad that the Russian Orthodox Church is located not only on the territory of Russia, but also on the territory of other regions, such as, for example, the Minsk region.
