Breviary: what neither a wedding nor a memorial service can do without

Question from Archpriest Valentin Mordasov’s book “What do you recommend, Father”: Are lay people allowed to read prayers from the Breviary for Clergy?

Priest's answer:

Valentin (Mordasov)

archpriest

Lay people, except priests and deacons, are allowed to read prayers from the Breviary. For example, there are such remote places where there is no church; there the believers themselves perform an incomplete funeral service, that is, they sing the stichera, read the canon, the Apostle, but do not read the Gospel, the prayer of permission, and do not say the exclamations and litanies of the priest and deacon. They even perform services in this way; for example, they serve not mass, but lunch service.

The Trebnik is a liturgical book that sets out the order of services, that is, sacraments and other sacred actions that are performed by the Russian Orthodox Church on special occasions, and which are not part of ordinary church services.

A breviary is a liturgical book that sets out the order of various requirements.

visit the weak with Thy mercy, forgive him (her) every sin, voluntary and involuntary.

Troparion, tone 4

The only speedy one in intercession, Christ, show speedy visitation from above to Thy suffering servant, and deliver from ailments and bitter illnesses; and raise up thee to praise and glorify unceasingly, with the prayers of the Mother of God, the One Lover of Mankind.

Troparion, tone 4

Look mercifully, O Lord, with Your merciful eye on our humble prayer. And without despising him, philanthropically visit your possessed servant with illness ( or

Thy servant, possessed by illness) and by the power of Thy compassion raise it up with the prayers of the Mother of God, the only Lover of Mankind.

On the bed of illness, lying and wounded by the wound of death, as you sometimes raised up, Savior, Peter’s mother-in-law and the weakened one carried on the bed; and now, O Merciful One, visit and heal the suffering: for You are the only one who has borne the ailments and illnesses of our family and is all able, as You are Many-merciful.

Master, Almighty, Holy King, punish and do not kill, strengthen those who fall and raise up those who are cast down, correct people’s bodily afflictions, we pray to Thee, our God, Thy servant (name)

visit the weak one with Thy mercy, forgive him every sin, voluntary and involuntary.
Hey, Lord, send down Your healing power from heaven, touch the body, extinguish the fire, tame passion and all lurking weaknesses, be the physician of Your servant (name)
, raise him from the sick bed and from the bed of bitterness whole and all-perfect, grant him to Your Church, pleasing and doing Your will. For it is Yours to have mercy and save us, O our God, and to You we send glory, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

in front of the icon “The Tsaritsa” (“Pantanassa”)

All-merciful, venerable Mother of God, Pantanassa, All-Queen! I am not worthy, but come under my roof! But as a merciful and gracious Mother of God, say the word, may my soul be healed and my weak body strengthened. You have an invincible power, and all your words will not fail, O All-Tsaritsa! You beg for me, You beg for me. May I glorify Your glorious name always, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer before surgery

Surgery is a very serious and responsible step. All loved ones, relatives, children and grandchildren, if there are any, worry about the life and health of the one who will undergo the operating unit. The patient's life directly depends on the medical staff. He plays the main role. But the moral attitude of the patient and his faith are very important.

Sequence of prayer chants

The book contains prayers and rites borrowed from the Great Trebnik: prayer chants “against the adversary” (chapter 91), “during the lack of rain” and “during the lack of rain” (chapters 80 and 81). The book also contains sequences not found in the Trebnik: thanksgiving for receiving a petition and for every good deed of God, the rite of blessing on a journey to those who want to sail on the waters, the rite of blessing a military vessel, a military banner, a new ship, digging a treasure trove and blessing it.

Why pray?

Thoughts about medical procedures spoil your mood, prevent you from sleeping peacefully, and deprive you of your appetite. Even the fastest and least traumatic operations portend a load on all systems, and especially on the mental one.

“God rules by the doctor’s hand” was said in legends and prayers, and people unshakably believe and have believed in this. Any person going under the knife does not exclude the thought that something will go wrong and admits the tiniest spark of doubt about the disastrous result. For warning, hope and faith in good things, people turn to God for help.

Doctors are not omnipotent and often the outcome depends on an absurd accident. The body's reaction may be different to anesthesia, which is regarded as temporary death. An appeal to the Almighty asks and desires help on his part.

History of the origin of the Trebnik

In their origin, the rites of the Sacraments and other sacred rites set forth in the Trebnik go back to the time of the apostolic life of the Church. The original Trebniks have not reached us.

The earliest known sources are the Euchologion of Sarapion, Bishop of Tmuit (Egypt, 4th century), as well as a collection of prayers and services contained in the 8th book of the Apostolic Constitutions.

As the external side of worship developed, the number of prayers increased until the 11th century inclusive.

In the Greek Church, the Trebnik together with the Missal make up one book called the Euchologion (Prayer Book).

Manuscripts from the 8th–9th centuries have survived to this day: the Euchologion of the Barberine Library and the Euchologion of the Sinai Monastery, discovered by Bishop Porfiry (Uspensky) during his trip to the East.

The Trebnik was first translated into Slavic by Saints Cyril and Methodius (IX century). It was in use until the time of Grand Duke Ivan Danilovich Kalita. Under him, the Greek Theognostus, appointed Metropolitan of All Russia, ordered in 1328 the Trebnik he brought to be translated into Slavic. His Trebnik came into general use in the Russian Church.

With the advent of printing in Rus' (1564), handwritten Breviaries were corrected and published under Patriarchs Philaret (1619-1633), Joasaph I (1634-1640), Joseph (1642-1652), Nikon (1652-1666), Joasaph II (1667 –1672), Joachim (1674–1690).

Patriarch Joasaph I supplemented the Breviary with an appendix of Council decrees. The Trebnik, published under Patriarch Joseph in 1651, was called the Great Trebnik. Joasaph II published an abridged version of the Great Breviary in 1672. It was called the Small Trebnik. Patriarch Joachim improved this edition in 1687 by printing the Nomocanon (in an abbreviated form) in the Small Trebnik.

In 1863, in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, with the blessing of the Kyiv Metropolitan Arseny, the Additional Trebnik was published.

The Power of Prayer Before Surgery

The histories of the Orthodox contain a large number of stories about how to pray correctly to the saints and God, whether mercy depends on sinfulness and righteousness, and whether prayers have helped those who believe religiously.

The city of Krasnodar registered one case. A saint came to a patient with a fractured collarbone, who was hesitant to operate due to his vital signs (he might not survive the intervention), in a dream. He was kind and instilled faith in the patient, giving him a solution from a spoon and saying, “Everything will be fine.” After this, the old man boldly went into the operating room and perfectly endured all the actions that were carried out. Just a few days later, having seen the icon, the man recognized his predictor. It was Panteleimon the Healer. Back in his time, when he was a doctor, he turned to God before every difficult choice and action, and doubt. God gave him the powers of healing and resurrection.

Who should I pray to before surgery?

You need not to worry, but concentrate and turn to Panteleimon for your health. The akathist is usually read seriously and with concentration. Then they gather their thoughts together and in their own words make a request to live through their day and grant many more years of life, glorifying God.

Saint Luke of Crimea is seen on many icons. His installations and methods of treatment are still used today. He created many successful surgical interventions during the war and revolutionary manipulations. Even at the end of his life, already a bishop, he did not leave the medical profession. After death, followers turning to Luke received sudden help from above, the help of doctors was not required and no surgical incisions were made.

Barbara the Great Martyr, with a cup in her hands, helped patients with various surgical pathologies. Without communion and without making a confession, Varvara is asked to participate in the administration of anesthesia so that it goes well and does not end in death.

Relatives, worried about their loved one, also turn to the saints. With their requests they increase the health and vitality of the patient. If a group of people turns to God, then prayer acquires great faith and personifies well-being. The prayer of detention can be read not only for yourself, but also for another person, especially someone who is sick.

How to pray before surgery?

It is important to go to church, light a candle for health and pray. Houses of prayer have no less faith, and turning to their icons ends in success. If the operation ended well, which is more likely, then you need to respond with gratitude, read the Our Father and ask for a speedy recovery and an excellent prognosis in the future.

When you go to the hospital, it is best to take a small icon and place it under your pillow or on the nightstand or on the windowsill. Already during preoperative preparation, you need to repeat the words “Lord have mercy” and the Lord God will do it.

Upon successful completion and while in the clinic for all subsequent days, you need to ask for a speedy improvement. Elderly people approach everything said with particular importance. The risk of losing one's life is high, as one's health deteriorates over many years. All they have to do is ask sincerely and truthfully for help, repent of their mistakes, and God will have mercy.

You can pray to many saints. The seven youths of Ephesus and the holy righteous Lazarus also fulfill the desires of believers. As a sign of respect and gratitude, a prayer service is ordered in the church. They thank God, doctors and saints for their help.

God is the doctor of the human body and soul, and there is no better one to find him. God's treatment always corresponds to the severity of the disease. Gratitude is due to him in any case. He is the only one who selflessly helps and does good. Believe and you will be rewarded!

In church practice there are large, small, additional and small missals in two parts

So, in church practice there are these types of missal: large, small, additional and small in two parts. Let's look at each of them in more detail.

Great Breviary - consists of 2 parts. The first part of the textbook contains the sequence of such sacraments as baptism, confirmation, wedding, consecration of oil, repentance and other divine services. Also the burial of the dead, the blessing of water, the tonsure of monks.

Necessary things for the wedding of newlyweds, among which we see a missal with the sacrament of wedding

It is with these prayers that the Russian Orthodox Church meets a person at his birth, and also illuminates him for the future life, when he moves into eternity. This refers to the sacrament of baptism and the sacrament of burial.

Prayers before surgery

The prayer that is said before the operation (including the birth prayer) is considered to work a miracle. After pronunciation, all bad emotions go away, the soul and heart are filled with peace and tranquility, hope for the best settles in the heart.

Prayer to God before surgery for a successful outcome

Master Almighty, holy King, punish and do not kill, strengthen those who fall and raise up those who are cast down, correct people’s bodily afflictions, we pray to Thee, our God, thy servant (name), who is weak, visit with Thy mercy. Forgive him for every sin, voluntary and involuntary. To her, Lord, Thy healing power was sent down from heaven, to guide the mind and hand of Thy servant, the doctor (name), and to carry out the necessary surgery safely, so that the bodily ailment of Thy servant (name) would be completely healed, and every hostile invasion would be driven far away from him. . Raise him from his sick bed, and grant him health in soul and body, pleasing and doing Your will. For it is Yours to have mercy and save us, our God, and to You we send glory, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to Luka Krymsky before surgery for the child

Luke of Crimea - bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, since April 1946 - Archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea, Russian and Soviet surgeon, scientist, author of works on anesthesiology, doctor of medical sciences, professor; spiritual writer, doctor of theology.

O all-blessed confessor, holy saint, our Father Luke, great servant of Christ! With tenderness, we bow the knee of our hearts, and falling to the race of your honest and multi-healing relics, like the children of our father, we pray to you with all diligence: hear us sinners and bring our prayer to the merciful and philanthropic God, to whom you now stand in the joy of the saints and with the faces of an angel. We believe that you love us with the same love with which you loved all your neighbors while you were on earth. Ask Christ our God: may he establish in his holy Orthodox Church the spirit of right faith and piety, may he give to her shepherds holy zeal and care for the salvation of the people entrusted to them: to observe the right of believers, to strengthen the weak and infirm in the faith, to instruct the ignorant, to reprove the contrary. Give us all a gift that is useful to everyone, and everything that is useful for temporary life and eternal salvation. Strengthening our cities, fruitful lands, deliverance from famine and destruction. Comfort for those who are grieving, healing for those who are ill, return to the path of truth for those who have lost their way, blessing from a parent, education and teaching for a child in the Passion of the Lord, help and intercession for the orphaned and needy. Grant us all your archpastoral and holy blessing, so that through you we will get rid of the wiles of the evil one and avoid all enmity and disorder, heresies and schisms. Grant us a godly way to cross the path of temporary life, set us on the path leading to the villages of the righteous, deliver us from airy ordeals and pray to the all-powerful God for us: that in eternal life with you we may unceasingly glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, to Him belongs all glory, honor and power forever and ever. Amen.

Today, a large number of people of different ages, from young to old, face surgical interventions. When an operation is performed, as a rule, anesthesia (pain relief) is used, and this puts a lot of stress on the heart, which adds fear before any, even simple, surgical intervention. .

Progress does not stand still, and surgical interventions are so easy that a person gets up and goes home within an hour after the manipulations, but, nevertheless, not a single operation takes place without worries.

Orthodox believers, Christians, are sure to seek the blessing of the Lord and the help of God's saints before the operation.

Prayer to Luka Krymsky before surgery

Saint Luke is a saint of God, who is known in the church world as a preacher of faith in the Lord God, a confessor, a good shepherd who healed the sick. He was a doctor and treated both physical and mental illnesses.

He managed to combine two difficult lives: being a doctor and an archpastor at the same time. They said that Luke had hands from God, he was a famous surgeon. His medical research and surgical achievements shook the world. Entire legends circulated about his healings.

But throughout the entire time of healing, he did not leave the church world. He soon realized that his calling was to be a priest and soon took monastic vows. They began to call him the apostle, evangelist and physician Luke. Afterwards, for a long time he was known as the ruling bishop of the Crimean Orthodox diocese.

It is because of his famous medical and surgical past that Christians pray to him for health after the operation, for the successful completion of the operation and for a speedy recovery.

A prayer appeal to Luke, as to any Holy Saint of God, must be pronounced sincerely, thoughtfully and with faith in the heart.

It is best to purchase an icon of the Saint for prayer, and it can even be a small pocket icon. In a church or at home, in complete solitude, a special text of prayer to St. Luke is said. Immediately during the operation, relatives and friends pray for the patient:

“Chosen to the saint of the Orthodox Church and confessor, who has shone forth to our country in the lands of the Crimea, like a shining luminary, having labored well and enduring persecution for the Name of Christ, glorifying the Lord who glorified you, who has given you to us, a new prayer book and helper, we sing praiseworthy songs; But you, who have great boldness towards the Lady of heaven and earth, free us from all mental and physical ailments, and strengthen us well in Orthodoxy, so that we all call to you in tenderness: Rejoice, Holy Hierarch of the Crimea, Confessor Luke, good and merciful physician.”

Doctors respond favorably to the prayers of patients and ask them to pray more. Immediately before the operation, you need to read the prayer to Luke forty times. The greatest effect is achieved if one prays in an Orthodox church, at an icon or the relics of a saint.

In 1646, a missal was published - Metropolitan Peter Mohyla

But these are not all its types. There is also a missal for Metropolitan Peter Mogila. Such a breviary was compiled and published in 1646, with the purpose of giving it to the southwestern clergy.

The saint compiled his missal based on Greek euchologies and ancient Slavic written sources. Also in this breviary there are ritual and pastoral articles. In ritual articles, the basic idea of the ritual and the meaning of all its accessories are revealed.

The Breviary of Metropolitan Peter of the Mogila was compiled and published in 1646, with the aim of giving it to the southwestern clergy

According to the content, the breviary of Peter the grave is also divided into 3 parts:

  • The first part has the rites of the sacraments and important prayers that relate to the life of a Christian from his birth to death.
  • In the second part you can find the rites of consecration and blessing of church accessories and household items of Christians, for example, clothes, icons.
  • In the third part you can find prayers for public disasters, for example, prayers during a cattle pestilence.

Unfortunately, Peter the grave died before the publication of his missal, which is why he did not have time to submit it for consideration by the All-Russian Patriarch and the Council. That is why this breviary did not receive distribution and recognition.

Prayer before surgery for a loved one

It is common among people to pray for life, health and healing not only to the person who needs help, but also to all his relatives. By uniting and reciting prayers, all those praying give enormous power to their prayers. After all, when several people pray before an operation for one, the chances of a successful operation increase several times.

Before praying for a successful operation of a loved one or loved one, you need to go to church, light a candle for good health and leave a note for good health. Then, upon returning home, pray again, this time in front of the home images.

The breviary got its name from the word “treba”, which means sacrifice.

The book got its name from the word “treba”, which in the ancient Russian language meant sacrifice, sacrifice. Currently, this is a book of prayer and sacred rites, which is performed at the request of one or more Christians. Usually these conversions occur in special circumstances of life.

Read the missal on azbyka.ru

This book contains such sacraments as prayer services, memorial services, funeral services, lighting of houses, etc. This does not include the sacrament of the Eucharist and ordination.

When did the missal begin to exist? All the rites that are described in the breviary go back to the time of the apostolic life of the church.

Of course, the very original missals have not reached our times. But from the earliest known sources, the Euchologion of Bishop Sarapion of Tmuit has reached us, as well as a small collection of prayers and services, which are contained in chapter 8 of the apostolic decrees.

This is what the rather dilapidated Euchologion looks like, surviving to our times.

Until the 9th century, the number of prayers gradually increased. For example, in the Greek church, together with the service books, they compose one book, and it is called Euchologion, in our language a prayer book.

It is also worth noting that manuscripts from the 8th and 9th centuries have survived to this day. It was the Euchologion of the Barberine Library and the Euchologion of the Sinai Monastery, which were found by Bishop Porfiry. At that time he went on a trip to the East.

Prayer during surgery - how to ask correctly

The Orthodox Church says that believers should prepare in advance for upcoming surgical procedures:

  • come to the temple to the priest and confess;

Prayer after surgery

While in the hospital, you need to pray for your health both morning and evening, without missing a single day. Immediately after surgery, even the most minor one, you need to ask the Almighty for help in a speedy recovery:

“O Lord, our Creator, I ask for your help, grant complete recovery to God’s servant (name), wash her blood with your rays. Only with Your help will healing come to her. Touch her with miraculous power and bless all her roads to the long-awaited salvation, healing, recovery.

Give her body health, her soul - blessed lightness, her heart - Your divine balm. The pain will forever recede and strength will return to it, the wounds will all heal and Thy holy help will come. Your rays from the blue Heavens will reach her, give her strong protection, bless her for deliverance from her illnesses, and strengthen her faith. May the Lord hear these words of mine. Glory to You. Amen".

It must be remembered: the older a person is, the more difficult it is for him to endure any operation, and there is nothing left to do but pray to the Lord, asking for help, for the healing of the patient. Don’t be afraid to ask the Lord for help - he is the only one who always helps selflessly.

God bless you!
