For secular people, church incense is associated with pleasant smells and the church. People remember going into church and the priest burning incense. The pleasant smell left a positive feeling. People saw only the outside. In fact, incense is more valuable and carries spiritual meanings.
A believer knows that incense symbolizes the Holy Spirit, which spreads to the whole world. It penetrates and lives only in the souls of the pure and holy. Incense also symbolizes our prayers to God.
This symbolic meaning helps a person understand why he is present in the temple. This presence must benefit the soul so that after death it meets Christ. And there in the Kingdom of Glory I enjoyed the fragrance of spiritual incense, the fragrance of grace.
It is known that church incense is present in the home of every Christian. Incense in the house is protection from evil forces. It should be understood that it is not the incense itself that protects us, but the grace that acts through it.

Incense should be perceived as a means through which grace is given. It is necessary to have faith in God and humility.

Many people associate incense with church rituals. However, the range of its application is much wider. It can also be used exclusively for domestic purposes and used at home. This is an interesting and unique substance that requires close acquaintance. It is not uncommon that even people who are closely familiar with its smell do not know what incense actually is.
Ways to light incense
With the help of a censer. A censer is a metal or ceramic container in which a hot coal is placed. You can use a saucer. Do not use paper or plastic products.
Heat the coal on the fire of the kitchen burner. You can carefully place it directly into the fire with tweezers and turn it over every few minutes. The coal should be covered with white ash.
The coal is hot enough. Be careful - the ash crumbles, and the coal itself may fall out of the tweezers. Keep a glass of water ready
When the coal has warmed up, put it in the censer and pour a little incense around the coal.
Incense is placed next to hot coals. It immediately begins to emit smoke. A censer with a handle can go around the entire apartment
Using a lamp. This method is interesting because it does not require lighting coal, but you do need the utensils that we indicated at the beginning of the article.
So, we take the lamp and light it. Read how to do this correctly in the website How to light a lamp at home. Then we take out the “spider” - a special metal attachment for the lamp.
With this method, incense is used exclusively in pieces, and not, for example, in powder.
We place the “spider” on the lamp and place a piece of incense on it. After this, you need to wait a little while the lamp heats up.
With this method, burning incense takes longer.
Incense: what is it?
The resin from which incense is made has special aromatic properties unique to it. The smell of incense is difficult to confuse with another. The resin itself is obtained from a plant of the cistus family, which mostly grows on the Arabian Peninsula.
The technology for obtaining the treasured substance is simple: an incision is made in the body of the tree, from which the liquid is collected. Then it needs to be dried. In general, incense obtained by any means is used. Some particles are torn off directly from the bark, others are picked up from the ground on which it dripped. Hence the division of incense by type:
- ordinary,
- selective
Each individual piece of resin is not very durable and can be ground into powder quite easily with the help of basic tools. In fact, incense is the name given to small crumbs obtained in this way.
Due to the very limited quantity of the parent plant, incense is considered a very valuable material. However, its history has very deep religious roots. It was sacrificed back in the days of paganism and people’s worship of many deities. In sacrificial rituals it was an alternative to animal blood.
Incense has earned this attitude due to its aromatic properties. The strongest smell came from the resin when it was placed on hot coals. The fragrant smoke rose and went into the very sky, to where the gods lived. So people gave them a sign and conveyed their requests.
With the advent and development of Christianity, the substance was borrowed and was also actively used in church rituals. Legend says that incense was among the gifts of the Magi for the birth of Christ.
Among the inhabitants of Ancient Rus', aromatic resin was revered as a means of repelling evil spirits and evil spirits. They fumigated homes with it, and small particles were always carried with them along with the pectoral cross. Faith in his magical power was (and still is) unshakable.
In addition, completely earthly healing and even rejuvenating properties were attributed to incense.
- It was used to treat joint pain in Ancient Egypt by mixing it with other ingredients and rubbing it into the skin.
- To slow down the aging process and smooth the skin from existing wrinkles, incense was added as an ingredient to various cosmetic masks.
The traditions are still observed today. The cosmetology industry uses resin for the same purposes, using new preparation recipes.
Types of incense
Often, fumigating resin is divided into different categories according to the place of production. The most famous substance is produced on Mount Athos, in a monastery. Of the entire local assortment, Vatopedi is distinguished. It is believed that this church incense is one of the highest quality among all, explaining this with such properties as:
- Ability for long-term storage;
Quite a long-lasting fragrance, even after stopping the fumigation procedure;
Deep, rich aroma.
To make this product, the highest quality aromatic oils are used, which, in turn, are divided into floral and woody, artificial and natural groups.
In general, recipes for incense made on Mount Athos are kept in the strictest confidence, so almost no one knows for certain the secret of the wonderful aromas that it possesses.
It is worth mentioning several other types of incense that are respected throughout the world.
Athenian incense.
The name is directly related to the geographical location of its production. Unlike the above, it is made in private workshops. The main difference is in the concentration of aromatic components.
Jerusalem.
A distinctive feature is the appearance of the resin. The local product is presented not in the form of small pieces that are familiar to the eye, but in the form of plates, the thickness of which does not exceed three millimeters.
Monasteries of Lebanon
also glorified their product by supplying the market with quite good incense with all the necessary characteristics.
The secrets of production have reached Russian craftsmen
. Here production is established on the basis of traditions and recipes established on Mount Athos. Hence its aromatic and physical properties, which are especially valued in beneficial resins.
Although the principle of action is the same, dozens of varieties of incense are nevertheless distinguished. It also differs in price. Cheaper varieties have the same properties as expensive ones, but with much less impact.
Despite this, experts recommend that when choosing incense for use at home, rely on your own feelings and preferences. Each of the species is divided into several subspecies, and all this number of varieties has an individual aroma with special characteristics of the effect. Therefore, there is plenty to choose from.

What you need to light incense
You can buy incense in almost any candle shop of an Orthodox church or order it in an Orthodox online store. Incense may differ from each other in its smell. There is nothing wrong with this, since incense is made in various places, where they try to give it their own unique aromas. For example, Jerusalem, Athos, Rosny and other types of incense are on sale. Boxes for sale typically contain from 200 to 500 g of incense. With daily use, such a box lasts on average 2 weeks.
To most easily light incense, which is sold in the form of solid pieces, you will need incense, incense coal, a censer or a lamp with a spider.

Various types of incense are used in church services. The use of incense varieties depends on the type of worship. So, on the Resurrection of Christ you can burn incense with “Easter” incense. On the twelve and great holidays, Fragrant incense is used. On Sundays, they burn mainly the “Bouquet of Athos” and “Holy Mountain” incense. Among the types of incense, “Bishop”, “Altar” and “Cell” incense stand out.
Bishop's incense is the most expensive in cost. It has a solemn and rich bouquet of fragrant aromas. It is most often used at bishop's services or on twelfth and great holidays.
Altar incense is fragrant with a bouquet of bright aromas. It is used for censing the altar and the entire temple on any holidays except the Twelves and Great Feasts.
Cell incense is used by monks for burning incense in their cells, as well as during church fasts, when performing the “Following the Prayer Service to drive away sorcery (witchcraft) and magical spells (temptations, demonic attacks) from a person.” This type of incense is the most ascetic. Beneficial properties of incense
Cistus, a plant from which life-giving liquid is extracted, is listed in the Red Book as an almost exterminated plant and a rarity among the flora of the planet.
In its original form, resin is a very expensive and almost unavailable product. More and more often it is now made using coniferous trees - cedar, spruce and others. This does not prevent incense from remaining the owner of a large number of beneficial properties:
- Excellent in treating joint disease, rheumatism, arthritis;
Helps fight colds;
Has a beneficial effect on the skin, eliminating various rashes and inflammations;
Used to treat urinary tract diseases;
Helps strengthen the immune system;
Successfully fights diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, disorders, ulcerative manifestations;
Has a positive effect on the nervous system, calms;
It has a good effect on the functioning of the brain in general. Added to some memory enhancing medications;
Has antiseptic properties;
In some cases it serves as an expectorant;
It is even found in cooking, as an aromatic additive to some drinks.
Taking into account the huge list of incense’s abilities, it is actively used as an indispensable component of some preventive, medicinal and cosmetic products:
- tinctures,
cosmetical tools.
Its aroma continues to be appreciated widely. Experts even subjected it to study, and in terms of its effect, they equated the substance used in fumigating premises to narcotic drugs, explaining this by the incredible energy charge that occurs in the body when inhaling the fumes.
The charge is so strong that a person begins to experience increased vigor, nervous tension is dulled, until complete peace. A person relaxes under the tide of a wave of pleasant sensations.
Excessive inhalation of smoldering resin can even lead to euphoria. The effect will be maximum if the process is accompanied by a small amount of alcohol. In this, experts see the danger of miraculous crystals. In addition, it turned out that their combustion products can cause an allergic reaction. It can be very difficult: with suffocation, dizziness and even memory loss.
How to use incense at home
Nevertheless, at home, church incense is used as a flavoring agent. To do this, it is not necessary to carry out church rituals in the home using censer and other elements.
All you need is some kind of brazier and coals, you can even take an ordinary spoon. It is important to maintain the required temperature so that the pieces of the substance smolder and smoke.
You can use incense at home every day; there are no restrictions on this, it all depends on your needs and the body’s reaction to incense. However, if you remember the advice of ancient monastic healers, you can find some recommendations on this matter:
- In case of illness, you need to inhale incense for 2 minutes, maybe a little less. Naturally, through the nose. It is also necessary to incense the entire apartment.
The monks recommend putting about 2-3 small pieces of incense in a censer with coal. You should start censing with icons, of course, while reading a prayer to the Lord, the Mother of God or the saint to whom you are addressing. Afterwards you need to fumigate the entire apartment, reading the prayer “May God rise again,” and then the patient.
If the patient himself fumigates the room with incense, then there is no need to additionally fumigate himself. In this case, place the censer and calmly inhale the aroma for a couple of minutes.
It is believed that incense purchased in church is the most beneficial and dangerous for evil spirits.
Resin can be added to the censer as needed. There are varieties of incense that burn out faster. The secret of the procedure is that the lower the temperature of the heated resin, the finer the smell.
Delicious smoke
Few people know what incense candles are. Even today, in the era of continuous computerization and space, everyone likes to look at a living flame, admire the smoldering coals, and inhale the fragrant, although sometimes acrid, smoke.
Returning from a barbecue or from a hike, we very often say: “Oh, we smell so delicious.” We bathe in this smoke not only ourselves, but also our own memory. This memory is very closely intertwined with the piercing moments of joy that we experience sitting around the fire, with a feeling of deep unity with the people around us. And this is not surprising. Sacred and sacred smoke is the head of everything!
Which type of incense to choose for your home?
As mentioned above, it all depends on your needs. But according to an unspoken church rule, each type of incense is suitable for certain events, depending on their solemnity and the richness of the aroma of the resin. The brighter the fragrance, the more solemn the moment.
Among the most popular types:
- “Bishop” is the most expensive type. It has a bright and rich bouquet of aromas. It is often used in church services on major holidays.
“Altar” also has a good bouquet, but is not as solemn as the view above. I use it in church for daily incense and on simple holidays.
“Cell” - this incense is usually used by monks for burning incense in their cells. It has a discreet, not pronounced aroma.

Burning incense in the Jerusalem Temple was a prerequisite for serving God (1 Chron. 9:29, Neh. 13:5). And in the Gospel, incense, along with gold and myrrh, was brought as a gift to the Lord Jesus Christ by the wise men from the east (Matthew 2:11).

- Believers prefer to light incense at home, and then conduct a ritual of expelling evil forces from the apartment/house. After such manipulations, harmony and comfort reign in the home.
How to light it?
The use of the candles we are considering is associated with the combustion effect. This is the only way they fill the home with grace and give off their aroma. It is necessary to light them in preparation for meditation or prayer. Believers advise filling the house with an aura exuding Orthodox incense in moments of painful torment. When lighting, it is better to use matches rather than a lighter. To light a candle, follow these steps:
- Hold the edge of the candle on fire for 30 seconds, then blow on it (the fire will go out, but the candle will smolder). To make the smoldering area larger, blow a couple of times. Do not blow too hard, otherwise sparks will fly away.
- Place the candle in a candlestick or stand and place it all in the censer.
- Wait for the candle to burn completely or extinguish it if necessary. To do this, place two drops of water on the candle.
Take precautions:
- do not give incense candles to children;
- do not leave burning candles unattended;
- Do not place the candle stand on a flammable surface.

Selected incense (lat. It is often recommended for use in cases of sexual dysfunction. To use incense oil, just drop 3-5 drops into the aroma lamp and light it for 5-10 minutes. You can also use it when taking a relaxing bath by adding the same amount to the water.
Focus of the Five Elements
What is a simple incense candle? This is charcoal obtained from plants, imbued with moisture and essential oils, which are burned in a fire and emit aroma. In other words, a censer candle is the focus of all five elements - soil, air, plants, fire and water. When they come together, they provide new energy that excites positivity, cleanses, and facilitates the interaction of the macrocosm of the surrounding world with the human universe.
