Holy healers unmercenary
Author: Press service of the temple
Date of publication: 11/24/2017
The next meeting of the Society of Orthodox Doctors was devoted to the topic of saints - patron saints of medicine.
As you know, unmercenaries are called saints of God who healed people and livestock free of charge, using not so much natural medical skills and knowledge as the grace-filled gift of prayer and miracles. That's why they are also called miracle workers. The list of unmercenary saints includes:
- Holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon († 305),
- Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke (+ 1st century);
- Free doctors Cosmas and Damian of Rome (+ 284);
- Unmercenaries and miracle workers Cosmas and Damian of Asia (+ III);
- Holy Martyrs Cosmas and Damian of Arabia (by place of origin) or Cilician (by place of suffering), (+ 287 or 303);
- Hieromartyr Ermolai (+ 303 or 305)
- Holy wonderworkers and unmercenaries Cyrus and John of Alexandria (+ 311);
- Rev. Sampson the Stranger (+ 530) and the Holy Martyr Diomede, Physician of Nicaea (+ 289);
- Holy Martyrs Photius and Anicetas (+ 305);
- Hieromartyr Mokiy, presbyter of Amphipolis (+ 289);
- Holy Martyr Thalaley of Cilicia (+ 284);
- Holy Martyr Tryphon of Nicaea (+ 250);
- Hieromartyrs Antipas, Bishop of Pergamon (+ 1st century), Charalampius, Bishop of Magnesia (+ 202) and Blasius, Bishop of Sebaste (+ 316);
- Saints Spyridon, Bishop of Trimifunt (+ 348) and Modest, Archbishop of Jerusalem (+ 633/34);
- Great Martyr Artemius of Antioch (+ 362).
Most of the saints listed had medical education and practice before their conversion to God. The holy martyr Tryphon was not a doctor, but in his youth he received from God the gift of healing illnesses and casting out demons. The Hieromartyr Antipas, the Great Martyr Artemy, the martyrs Falalei, Photius, Aniketas and Mokiy, although they were not healers during their lifetime, were nevertheless included in the list of unmercenaries due to numerous posthumous miracles and healings through prayers to them. The unmercenary saints Tryphon, Blasius, Charalampius, Spyridon and Modest helped not only people, but also dumb creatures, and are also deliverers from the invasion of harmful insects.
Since ancient times, the veneration of St. doctors without money and in Orthodox Rus', where it was customary in the churches of Cosmas and Damian to pray for healing from ailments. The Russian Orthodox Church began to treat them with even greater respect after the miraculous rescue of the royal family during a train crash near Kharkov, which happened on October 30, 1888. Emperor Alexander III then held the roof of the overturned carriage on his back for some time until the rest of the passengers got out. At the same time, the Emperor offered prayers specifically to Saints Cosmas and Damian of Arabia, whose memory was celebrated that day. Russia was shocked by what happened. Therefore, in the place where the royal family was saved from death, in a village called Borki, a temple was soon built. At that time, many icons depicting Saints Cosmas and Damian were painted in Russia. Prayers of thanks were offered to them, prayer services were served, and many chapels and temples were erected. There is also a Church of Cosmas and Damian in the Chelyabinsk region (the village of Yushkovo).
All the saints listed above have their own separate memory. There was no general or cathedral memory of them in the Menaion until 1980. For the first time, the common memory of the unmercenary saints was united in the Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos, where an annual vigil is held in honor of their common council on the nearest Sunday to November 1 (the memory of St. Cosmas and Damian of Asia). The reason for this was that in the Russian Svyatogorsk monastery the relics of all the unmercenary saints are kept, parts of which are collected in one ark, which is taken out for worship on the day of their common memory.
“By studying the lives of holy doctors, one can come to the conclusion that being a doctor is a feat,” summarizes the confessor of the Society, Archpriest Alexander Byankin, “It should be noted that every holy doctor sought first of all to heal the soul of his patient, and then his body (after all it is well known that many bodily ailments do not stop or even get worse if a person’s soul is damaged by sinful passions). A person with a medical degree, if he wants to be worthy of being called a doctor, must be impartial, uncovetous and unselfish, he must treat both rich and poor, both friends and enemies.
Also, based on the lives of the saints, we can conclude that a good doctor must be patient, hardworking, merciful and compassionate, he must think first of all about his patients, and not about himself. And finally, the doctor should carefully preserve the purity of his soul. Only if all these conditions are met can a doctor, by serving the suffering, please God.
In a surprising way, the peculiarities of the lives of the holy healers of the unmercenary are revealed in the life feat of our contemporary, confessor of the faith, famous surgeon, scientist and saint Archbishop Luke of Simferopol and Crimea (Voino-Yasenetsky). His life’s feat as an unmercenary doctor and confessor of faith is especially relevant today in the era of spiritual crisis and liberal values, the transfer of medical care into the service sector, when market relations overshadow moral ones.

Reasons for the popularity of alternative medicine
Why have Russian healers become increasingly popular and in demand among the population in recent years? There are two reasons for this phenomenon. Over the past decade, the cultural level of the population has increased significantly, as a result of which people’s attitudes towards their health have changed.
Official medicine is developing in a different direction; it is not able to satisfy people's demand. The emerging niche was filled by Russian healers. In our society there are quite a lot of people who sincerely believe in the power of traditional medicine and deliberately reject treatment from professional doctors.

Specifics of alcoholism treatment
Filling the body with potassium is, according to herbalists, an excellent way to reduce cravings for alcoholic beverages. They use natural honey as a source of potassium. Adding this product to drinks (and without informing the patient) helps to significantly reduce the craving for drinking alcoholic beverages. 10-14 days are enough to observe positive dynamics.
If modern medications negatively affect the liver, then thanks to various decoctions and infusions it can be cleansed. For example, traditional healers offer swallow root powder (at the rate of 0.5 grams for 7-8 days).

Why do people choose doctors
Not everyone is ready to go to a medical facility and talk about the fact that they suffer from alcoholism. If a loved one or relative drinks excessive amounts of alcohol, believing that he is absolutely healthy, you can help him by preparing an herbal infusion. Lovage root is mixed with several bay leaves, then poured with vodka. The product must be infused for about two weeks in a dark place. Such products are absolutely harmless, they are not addictive, and do not cause negative effects to the body.
