in tongues, our spirit prays to God (see 1 Cor. 14:2, 14).

According to Scripture, we can pray in tongues whenever we want (see 1 Cor. 14:15), but the gift of tongues only works when the Holy Spirit wants it (see 1 Cor. 12:11).
The gift of tongues should usually be accompanied by the gift of interpretation of tongues. However, private prayer in tongues is not usually interpreted. Paul said that when he prays in tongues, his mind remains unfruitful (see 1 Cor. 14:14).
