St. Gabriel Sedmiezerny (Zyryanov), Schema-Archimandrite

Prayer to St. Gabriel (Zyryanov), Elder of the Sedmiezernaya Hermitage

O reverence and God-bearing Father, all-honorable Elder Gabriel, glory to the fathers and praise to the righteous! During the days of your earthly life in the monasteries of the Savior and the Mother of God, you taught many on the right path, giving a helping hand to the fallen, a merciful and compassionate former father to all and raising new martyrs of the Holy Church! You are now, the all-blessed elder, residing in the heavenly monastery, even more so, multiplying your love for us, your sinful and unworthy children, tempted by malice, despondency and untruth. For this reason, we fall before your wholesome power and humbly pray to you: do not be silent for us to the Lord and do not despise us, who honor you with faith and love and remember your holy memory, be a quick helper for us in all sorrows, troubles and misfortunes, protect us from all visible and invisible enemies, drive away the cloud of passions from us and enlighten our eyes of the heart, intercede for us mental and physical health, do not forget us even at the hour of our death, when we humbly demand your intercession. Ask the Lord our God to end our lives in peace and repentance, to be delivered from ordeals and eternal torment, and to be honored with the Kingdom of Heaven with you and your spiritual children, who in their suffering received incorruptible crowns, and with all the saints who have pleased the Lord from the ages and to our God Jesus Christ, to Him is due all honor and worship, with His Originless Father and with His Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Akathist to the Venerable Gabriel (Zyryanov), Elder of Seven Lakes

Kontakion 1

Chosen servant of Christ and His Most Pure Mother, a non-slothful servant! A warm prayer book for us to God and His love, a wonderful and perfect image! Accept from us unworthy the praise due to you and, as you have boldness towards the Lord, deliver us from all troubles and sorrows, so that we call to you: Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Ikos 1

To the Archangel of the same name and to his life-like counterpart, the Creator of all creation saw the prophetic words: “Behold, Thou art Mine!” From your youth, having heard this voice from Heaven, you loved with all your heart the God who loved you, Reverend Father Gabriel. For this reason we call you: Rejoice, chosen by God from youth; Rejoice, you who have been called to Heavenly citizenship; Rejoice, you who count the beauty of this world for nothing; Rejoice, thou who has loved the life of angels from childhood; Rejoice, thou who has faithfully accepted the yoke of Christ; Rejoice, thou who was justified by grace by his life; Rejoice, childish image of tearful prayer; Rejoice, God-loving branch of pious parents; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 2

Seeing the beauty of the Divine vision that overshadowed you with the grace of the Holy Spirit, you surprised your parents, not calling them children, but God’s children. You also diligently followed Him who called you Yours, constantly calling out to Him: Alleluia. Ikos 2

With a divinely enlightened mind you comprehended the vanity and impermanence of this world, Reverend Gabriel, from your youth you desired eternal blessings and created for yourself the abode of the Holy Spirit. We create for you a chic song: Rejoice, having taught yourself abstinence from your youth; Rejoice, having with fasting and prayer repulsed the arrows of the evil one to the end; Rejoice, thou vouchsafed the Divine calling; Rejoice, thou who havest been rewarded with justification from the Lord; Rejoice, loving Christ God with all your heart; Rejoice, for you have walked right according to His commandments; Rejoice, clothed with the battle of righteousness; Rejoice, enlightened by the light of God; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 3

By the power from above you were delivered from your wound, Reverend Gabriel, in your weakness you prayed to the righteous Simeon of Verkhoturye, and through his prayers you were healed and sang to God, Wonderful in His saints: Alleluia. Ikos 3

I am going to you to the Verkhoturye monastery from afar to the multi-healing power of the saint of God in fulfillment of the vow given to him, you saw the saint in the form of a wondrous wanderer. Having done alms for him, you heard from him: “You will be a monk, you will be a schema-monk, you will be here.” We, marveling at God’s favor for you, call to you: Rejoice, having surrendered yourself entirely to the guidance of God; Rejoice, you who chose the narrow and sorrowful path of monastic life by His will; Rejoice, zealous competitor of the ancient ascetics; Rejoice, guardian of Christian virtues; Rejoice, healed by the prayers of the righteous Simeon; Rejoice, having been anticipated by his intercession in monasticism; Rejoice, having left your fatherland for the love of the Lord; Rejoice, having taught yourself to live a temperate life from your youth; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 4

Confused by a storm of doubts and afraid of your parents’ wrath, as if the grain crops had been wounded by hail, admonishing your father to leave, you dared to ask God Himself for the abundance of the fields. Hearing a thunderous voice from Heaven and the great gifts of God in vain, sang to Him: Alleluia. Ikos 4

Hearing the great life of the God-wise fathers and elders of the Optina Hermitage and wanting to imitate their piety, you asked for your parent’s blessing, Reverend Father. They, marveling at your humility, blessed you on the narrow path of monastic life. We, praising your good will, sing to you: Rejoice, you who have shown great love for God; Rejoice, having abounded in His power; Rejoice, inflamed with divine love; Rejoice, captivated by the way of life of the desert fathers; Rejoice, blessed by St. Ambrose; Rejoice, protected from despondency and sorrow by Elder Melchizedek; Rejoice, zealous companion of desert lovers in the search for God; Rejoice, for your enemies and for all your warmest prayer books; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 5

The godly great luminary, shining in the desert of Optina, shone upon you, the good branch, but you, imitating your spiritual teacher with gentleness and meekness, shone like a new star and together with them you cried out to God: Alleluia. Ikos 5

You saw with sorrow that the abbot was depriving you of monastic tonsure, otherwise it would not be possible to shake the strength of your will. You, having asked for the elder’s blessing, came to the city of Moscow. We, seeing that you have laid this heavy cross on yourself, sing to you: Rejoice, you who received the radio invasion not for the sake of vestments, but for repentance; Rejoice, thou who despiseth the sweets of the flesh to the wise God; Rejoice, diligent builder of brotherly love; Rejoice, having experienced fasting in the Moscow monasteries; Rejoice, you who did not hide your talents in the earth; Rejoice, you who have crushed the networks of vanity and pride; Rejoice, pillar of consolation for the discouraged; Rejoice, monastic image of patience; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 6

The capital city of Moscow preaches your labors and exploits, O wise man Gabriel, where you labored in two monasteries, so that the new monasticism will become an ancient fatherly image, teaching the brethren to worthily chant to God: Alleluia. Ikos 6

You have shone forth from the Ural country like a radiant light, O Reverend Father, illuminating many abodes with the divinely enlightened light. Among them is the Raifa hermitage, where you were awarded the priesthood. With this in mind, we sing to thee: Rejoice, guardian of the commandments of the elderly; Rejoice, partaker of secret revelations; Rejoice, father who perceived the ancient traces; Rejoice, having received victories from God against the evil-believers and the enemy-makers; Rejoice, for by you envy is trampled upon; Rejoice, for through your prayers to the Mother of God demons are cast out; Rejoice, marvelous imitator of Christ in love; Rejoice, as one who has only one wealth; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 7

Although you were a faithful imitator of the Lamb of God, having adopted His meekness and humility, you meekly endured all sorts of insults and sorrows from envious people when you were removed from the monastery to the city of Kazan; but knowing that eternal salvation is given through temporary sorrows, you cried out to the Savior of all: Alleluia. Ikos 7

With a new command from the bishops, you directed your feet, blessed father, to the wilderness of the seven lakes, where the miraculous image of the Most Holy Theotokos stood. But you, glorifying Yu, and this monastery, glorified you more than before, when you were appointed archimandrite there. We glorify you here: Rejoice, fragrant tree of desert vegetation; Rejoice, beloved and faithful child of the Mother of God; Rejoice, Her unshakable and compassionate admirer; Rejoice, enriched with the union of virtues; Rejoice, beautifier of the Sedmiezersk desert; Rejoice, zealot of monastic exploits; Rejoice, having chosen the love of God as the path to Heaven; Rejoice, you who have overcome all suffering through humility; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 8

A terrible illness has struck you, Father Reverend, and it kept your long-suffering body on your sick bed for five years, just as sometimes your soul is separated from it. You, the glorification of St. Anticipating Seraphim, you cried out for his help in his weakness. After healing, his image appeared in the same place of the Mother of God as a martyr to the wonderworker of Sarov, writing, singing to God: Alleluia. Ikos 8

You devoted everything to yourself to the erection of a new temple, St. Father, upon receiving the Great Schema, thinking that in this temple the Psalter will continually be chanted for all the departed. In it, as you liturgy, you saw a luminous vision of all the saints praying at the Throne of the Lord, sacrificing Himself for us, singing to You: Rejoice, contemplator of the radiant Divine vision; Rejoice, having seen all the saints before the Lord at prayer; Rejoice, overshadowed by the favor of the Mother of God; Rejoice, lover of God, gifted with gifts from above; Rejoice, you who extended equal love to your neighbors, living and deceased; Rejoice, you who created a temple for the constant reading of the Psalms; Rejoice, for having nothing to build, move towards it, trusting in God; Rejoice, for with the blessing of the archpastor the church building was miraculously created; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 9

The whole multitude of mankind was surprised on earth in the flesh at your patience and kindness, reverend father, when you are blameless and righteous, you are visible and jealous of piety; the law-breaking brethren rebelled against you, wanting to kill you. You, praying to the Lord, cried out to Him: Alleluia. Ikos 9

No one can tell about your great patience and warm love for Christ, catering to demonic promises, expelling you from the monastery for the sake of slander, Rev. Father Gabriel. You settled in the Savior monastery within the boundaries of Pskov, where you worked hard. We, understanding the will of God in this, sing to you: Rejoice, rule of piety and faith; Rejoice, having endured reproach and exile for this; Rejoice, reproached by the brethren, imputing dishonor to yourself as honor; Rejoice, man who conquered the machinations of the wicked through humility; Rejoice, watered with streams of saving tears; Rejoice, perfect image of true kindness and brotherly love; Rejoice, you who have drunk the cup of reproach like a cleansing medicine; Rejoice, you who prayed with love to the Lord for those who hate you; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 10

I want to save your children, who are coming to you in great numbers, and I foresee for you the time of hard times and the persecution of the Church of Christ, which you depicted in your life, love for the Lord, as the root of all good things, you commanded them to have and thus endure everything, crying out to God to the end: Ashshluia. Ikos 10

The walls of the Stasov monastery were not able to shelter you, Father Gabriel, for many people have seen you as equal to the angels in their life and coming to you; Having heard the words of eternal life, you glorified your spiritual exploits in many Russian cities and villages. In the same way, we honor you with these praiseworthy words: Rejoice, spiritual mentor of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth; Rejoice, a quiet and faithful refuge for archpastors and shepherds; Rejoice, God-wise and quick helper to those who honor monks; Rejoice, your child and our guide to the inaccessible mountains; Rejoice, having led a congregation of disciples to Christ; Rejoice, with them, as a father from his children, you who ascended to Him received the reward of Heaven; Rejoice, you who sanctified our land and waters with your tears; Rejoice, having depicted by your life the future sorrows of the Russian Church; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 11

All singing is not sufficient for your praise, reverend father, who will be able to glorify your arduous life or praise your deeds? Only seeing you again, even at the hour of death, the people of the city of Kazan weepingly cried out to the One who called you: Alleluia. Ikos 11

We confess that you are a lamp of good deeds, Reverend, as with warm prayers to Christ God and His Most Pure Mother, for our city and your monastery, now you intercede before Them and with the light of Divine love you warm the souls and hearts of those who come to you and sing to you: Rejoice, lamp Divine light; Rejoice, zealous prayer book to God and His Mother, the All-Sung; Rejoice, lover of God, still contemplating the Heavenly Light on earth; Rejoice, for your sake you chose the hard and narrow path; Rejoice, heavenly patron of those who honor your holy memory; Rejoice, you who are our guide to the heavenly monastery; Rejoice, messenger of God’s love, calling everyone to reconciliation with the Lord; Rejoice, strengthen us by the feat of faith in love for Him; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 12

The grace of God was a bright dwelling in your life, Reverend Father Gabriel, and after death did not leave us with your intercession before the Lord, teaching students now how to walk the narrow path of salvation, glorifying, thanking and crying out to Him: Alleluia. Ikos 12

Singing your labors and deeds, we please you, wondrous elder, as though you had passed away from us, you are alive and standing before God in your spirit, interceding for us. We, the upcoming race of your multi-healing relics, glorify you: Rejoice, spiritual strengthening of the Russian land; Rejoice, praise and affirmation have been given to the city of Kazan; Rejoice, companion of angels and all saints; Rejoice, heir of the Kingdom of Christ; Rejoice, vigilant prayer book for us; Rejoice, thou who art not ashamed of our representative; Rejoice, for you see the God-originating Trinity in Heaven; Rejoice, for having left your relics on earth, you have helped everyone; Rejoice, Reverend Father Gabriel, the inexhaustible source of God’s love. Kontakion 13

Oh, most wonderful elder, Reverend Our Father Gabriel! Accept this small praise from your unworthy and foolish children. Always pray for us to the Most Pure Mother of God, as before Her venerable image you shed streams of tears asking for peace for our Fatherland, health and salvation for all who live in it. And now offer prayers to Her Son, Christ our God, and for us, who honor Your memory and sing with you to Him: Alleluia.
