Psalms 26, 50, 90: text in Russian, how to read correctly

Orthodox Life

Metropolitan Anthony (Pakanich) on the Psalm of the Theotokos, especially for the Feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The 44th Psalm can be considered a confession of the heart about Christ, His Glory, the Church and His Divine Mother.

Christ is called the King in this psalm; the author extols Him with words marvelous in beauty, power of feelings, and faith.

It is obvious that the psalmist’s lips speak so sweetly from an excess of deep feelings. He does not convey someone else’s words, does not share someone else’s experience, but speaks about what he has experienced and personally realized. Words pour out in a powerful stream from his heart, filled with awe, love, joy and admiration:

“A good word has poured out from my heart; I say: my song is about the King; my tongue is a scribbler's cane"

Next, a wondrous image of the Coming Christ appears before us and His superiority is spoken of: He is the most beautiful and wonderful man who has ever lived on earth. David, writing these lines, was illuminated by the flame of God's love, inspired by His Spirit. It’s as if he’s calling on all of us to join him, to join this flow.

For everyone, this is a wonderful example of how the soul should praise Its Creator, His holiness, goodness and greatness: constantly and hourly.

The delight of the soul before God should become our natural state, and it is wonderful if it manifests itself not only in prayer to the Almighty, but also in communication with each other:

“You are more beautiful than the sons of men; Grace was poured out from Your mouth, therefore God blessed You forever.”

The psalm praises the power, strength and truth of Christ, glorifying His victories and wisdom of government:

“Gird Thy sword upon Thy thigh, O Mighty One, with Thy glory and Thy beauty... Thy arrows are sharp, the nations will fall before Thee, they are in the heart of the enemies of the King. Thy throne, O God, endures forever; the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom. You loved righteousness and hated iniquity; therefore, O God, Your God has anointed You with the oil of joy more than Your fellows.”

After the praise of Christ as the King, lines appear about the queen:

“The queen stood at Your right hand in Ophir gold. Hear, daughter, and see, and incline Your ear, and forget Your people and your father’s house. And the King will desire your beauty; for He is your Lord, and you shall worship Him.”

The words about the queen are interpreted by the holy fathers in different ways: some see in them a prophecy about the Church, others give these lines the Theotokos interpretation.

Both of these meanings are present here.

Many prophecies are interpreted differently, but this only enriches them, makes them deeper, and takes them beyond the scope of personal perception. The depth of faith is limitless, as is the knowledge of God.

The beauty of the queen means that pristine beauty that was originally given to people on earth, but after the Fall it was distorted and lost. And only in the Mother of God the Tsar saw beauty untouched by sin.

Veneration of the Most Holy Theotokos brings us closer to God; we are no longer slaves, but children of God’s family. Regular reading of this psalm helps cleanse the heart from sinful bonds, brings it closer to absolute goodness and beauty, and grants the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos.

The psalm ends with a reminder that Christ is the only way to light and salvation, and His name will be preserved forever, everything will pass, but He is eternal, the memory of Him is endless:

“I will make Your name memorable to generation and generation; therefore the nations will praise You forever and ever.”

Prayer to the Great Martyr George the Victorious

The effect of prayer is noticeable not only in situations of hostility, but also in sports competitions when the competition is too tough. The applicant hopes for a helping hand and salvation when the confrontation takes on too serious and even destructive proportions.

The desire for victory is certainly present, but at the same time the thoughts are pure; the upper hand over an enemy or rival must be gained in an honest way, with the help, participation and blessing of the Almighty.

“Holy, glorious and all-praised Great Martyr George! Gathered in your temple and in front of your holy icon, people worshiping, we pray to you, known to the desires of our intercessor, pray with us and for us, beseeching God from His benevolence, that He may mercifully hear us asking for His goodness, and not abandon all ours to salvation and life needful petitions, and grants our country victory in the face of resistance; and again, falling down, we pray to you, holy Victorious: strengthen the Orthodox army in battle with the grace given to you, destroy the forces of the rising enemies, so that they will be ashamed and put to shame, and let their insolence be crushed, and let them know that we have Divine help, and to everyone in sorrow and the current situation, show your powerful intercession. Pray to the Lord God, the Creator of all creation, to deliver us from eternal torment, so that we glorify the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and we confess your intercession now, and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen".

Psalm 50

History of writing

Song 50 was written not for the sake of protection, but for the sake of forgiveness. David deeply repented of his sins and asked for the mercy of the Lord. If history is to be believed, the king committed adultery. He really liked the commander's wife, but this did not stop David. As a result, the woman became pregnant and the king tried to hide his sin. There was a rumor that it was the king who ordered the death of the commander, the beauty’s husband. You can hide a lot from people, but not from the Lord. The heavens were angry. A war began between David’s own children, blood flowed, and there were murders. Therefore, only with a special word, Psalm 50, could David beg God’s forgiveness. The text of the prayer was written by the king himself.

Psalm 50 is read for forgiveness of sins and bad deeds. They say that after reading a song of praise, the soul ceases to be sad, anxiety and resentment go away.

Psalm 50

The author of this psalm is also David. But if the previous prayer, which was mentioned in the article above, was written by David the righteous, then this one has a completely different story. The fact is that the king wrote this psalm after he fully realized the severity of the sin he had committed.

There is a mention in history that the king committed adultery. The woman he liked so much that he took her into his harem turned out to be married. But this circumstance did not stop the monarch. He committed a sin, as a result of which the girl became pregnant. When it turned out that she was the wife of the famous commander, the king decided to hide his guilt. It is believed that it was on his orders that the beauty’s unfortunate husband was killed. And although sin was hidden from the human race, the heavens were angry. They showed their anger to the unfortunate king. David's children began to kill each other in the struggle for the throne, and the peace in the country suddenly turned into war. In order to beg the Lord for forgiveness for his sin, David repented. During his repentance, he used Psalm 50, which he wrote in his own hand.

The clergy strongly recommend reading this prayer every day. Because some people may not even notice how they sin

Moreover, we should not forget that it is extremely important for a righteous Christian to pray not only for himself, but also for other people. If we look at history, it becomes clear that the Lord has always been tolerant of sinners

This is confirmed by the story of King David. Because he could very well pay for his sins with his life. However, due to the fact that this sinner was able to find the spiritual strength for sincere repentance, he was pardoned.

What are psalms

Psalms are prayer songs from the Psalter (one of the books of the Old Testament). In total, the Psalter contains 150 psalms. The author of the majority is considered to be the Hebrew king and prophet David, who lived and reigned a thousand years before the birth of Jesus Christ. But there are psalms, the composition of which is attributed to Moses and those close to King David. Psalms 26, 50, 90 are among the most famous. They are revered by believers as the most effective in prayer. Let's take a closer look at each of them.

Psalter

PRAYER - GUARD PSALM 90

Today I would like to remind and talk about the protective properties of Psalm 90. Its text is often used as a prayer for protection. Moreover, the powerful protective properties of the psalm are manifested not only when reading it. If you write the text of Psalm 90 by hand on a piece of paper and keep this piece of paper near your body, it turns into a powerful amulet against troubles, accidents, enemies, magicians, and any energetic and other harmful influences from the outside.

Copy the text onto paper, leather or fabric - any natural material. The resulting amulet must be worn on the body - in the pocket of underwear, in underwear (for example, bras often have push-up pockets - you can stuff them there :)), or can be sewn to the lining. In general, figure out for yourself how to make sure that the text of the Psalm is always with you, preferably with your body. (That is, not in a bag somewhere nearby. Although even this option is better than not defending yourself at all).

In Old Russian Church:

Living in the help of the Most High, he will settle in the shelter of the Heavenly God. Says the Lord: Thou art my Protector and my Refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. For He will deliver you from the snare of the trap, and from rebellious words, His splash will overshadow you, and under His wing you hope: His truth will surround you with weapons. Do not be afraid from the fear of the night, from the arrow that flies during the day, from the thing that passes in the darkness, from the cloak, and from the demon of the midday. Thousands will fall from your country, and darkness will fall at your right hand, but it will not come close to you, otherwise you will look at your eyes, and you will see the reward of sinners. For You, O Lord, are my hope, You have made the Most High your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and wound will not approach your body, as His Angel commanded you to keep you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their arms, but not when you dash your foot on a stone, step on an asp and a basilisk, and cross a lion and a serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver, and I will cover, and because I have known My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him: I am with him in sorrow, I will overcome him, and I will glorify him, I will fill him with long days, and I will show him My salvation.

He who lives under the roof of the Most High, under the shadow of the Almighty, rests, says to the Lord: “My refuge and my defense, my God, in whom I trust!”

He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, from the destructive plague, He will cover you with His feathers, and you will be safe under His wings; shield and fence are His truth.

You will not be afraid of the terrors in the night, the arrow that flies by day, the plague that walks in the darkness, the plague that devastates at noon.

A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it will not come near you: you will only look with your eyes and see the retribution of the wicked.

For you said: “The Lord is my hope”; You have chosen the Most High as your refuge; no evil will befall you, and no plague will come near your dwelling; for He will command His angels about you - to guard you in all your ways: they will carry you in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone; you will step on the asp and basilisk; You will trample on the lion and the dragon.

“Because he loved Me, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he has known My name.

He will call to Me, and I will hear him; I am with him in sorrow; I will deliver him and glorify him, I will satisfy him with long days, and I will show him My salvation.”

Real life story: Nina moved to another department of the store to replace her friend. A friend went on sick leave, so Nina needed to work in the new team for at least a couple of weeks. On the very first day, the girl had a severe headache, and in the evening she felt incredibly exhausted. Although he always works in a similar mode, just in a different department.

Writing off the malaise as temporary, she took some painkillers and went to bed. The next day everything happened again. And the next one too.

In the department, the girl worked in tandem with the boss. She met with her before - once a week. And here we had to work side by side every day.

Nina remembered that as a child, her mother always gave her the handwritten text of Psalm 90. And intuitively she made herself such a talisman again, putting it in her jeans pocket.

Then strange things began to happen. Arriving at work, Nina felt surprisingly good - there was no headache, no loss of energy or depression. And when the boss, always cheerful and energetic, came in holding her temple and asked for a pill for her head, it was hard for Nina not to believe in the help of higher powers.

This is a common everyday story. And there are those where such a talisman saved life, well-being, and health in general. Take care of yourself and your loved ones with God's help.

On what occasions is it customary to read psalms to the Mother of God?

comments 3

Few believers know that in addition to the usual and well-known Orthodox psalms, there are also special psalms to the Mother of God. What kind of prayers are these, are they included in the Orthodox canon, how and when to read them correctly? These questions arise in people very often, especially considering that on the Internet today you can find a variety of, sometimes quite contradictory, opinions of clergy about these prayers.

Let's start with the fact that the psalms to the Mother of God are part of the special Psalter, which belongs to the pen of the famous Russian saint Demetrius of Rostov. This is a collection of Christian chants, composed like ancient Christian psalms, but addressed not to God, but to the Queen of Heaven. Why does reading the psalms to the Mother of God raise doubts among believers? #eleven

The God-bearing power of Orthodox psalms

A lot has already been written about the extraordinary power of the psalms, which helps believers get rid of the devil’s machinations, drives away evil spells, protects them from evil people, from danger and, most importantly, supports the correct spiritual and prayerful attitude in a person. It was these wonderful properties of the Psalter, as well as the great love for the Mother of God, the unfailing Intercessor and Patroness of the entire Orthodox family, that moved St. Demetrius to write psalms to the Mother of God. According to his plan, these Mother of God hymns were supposed to combine the properties of the Psalter and prayers to the Lady of Heaven, becoming a strong protection for every believer.

The Orthodox psalms to the Mother of God contain requests, praises, as well as teachings about the essence of the Mother of God, thanks to which they gained the approval not only of the saint’s contemporaries, but also of subsequent generations of believers in Russia.

Why do not all clergy approve of reading psalms to the Mother of God?

Despite the time-tested power of the psalms, as well as the approval of the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, some representatives of the modern clergy allow themselves to speak about the work of Demetrius of Rostov in a disparaging tone.

There can be only one reason for this: a lack of understanding of the meaning and essence of the psalms to the Most Holy Theotokos. All Orthodox Christians should know that these hymns and prayers are not prohibited by the Orthodox Church, and accordingly, there is no reason to refuse to read them. At the same time, the psalms to the Mother of God are not part of the obligatory prayer rule and are read when a spiritual need for intense prayer to the Mother of God is felt.

Protective prayers

Human life is unpredictable. Since no one is given the opportunity to know what exactly is prepared by Fate. Moreover, trying to find out about the future is also prohibited. Since such an action is sinful. But due to the fact that a person cannot find out about the events that will happen in his life, he begins to experience horror. This horror quite often gives rise to doubts.

But what frightens Orthodox Christians most of all is destruction. And only the righteous believe that there is no need to fear death. After all, after the death of a person, his soul departs for the heavenly kingdom. In other words, she returns to where she is supposed to be. And therefore the priests also insist that the horror of death is completely unfounded.

It’s just that sometimes it’s very difficult to cope with it. Naturally, we can say that a Christian must be strong in spirit. But almost everyone cannot understand where to get this strength. And this is the root of the difficulty. To understand this, you need to remember the existence of so-called protective prayers. Unfortunately, almost everyone forgot about them. But specifically with the help of these texts you can protect yourself from all evil.

When and how to read Psalm 50 correctly

Psalm 50 is a kind of morning prayer, which relates to the canons for Communion, to the Mother of God, to the Guardian Angel. The meaning of the psalm is contrition and repentance for sins committed. This is a kind of request for mercy, so that the Lord will forgive your sins. Priests recommend reading Psalm 50 at times when a person is overwhelmed by confusion, the soul is crying, and sins are pressing.

The psalm consists of 12 sentences, the meaning of which must be understood from the first lines, accepted with the heart and sincerely believed. All Christians note that after reading the prayer, anxiety goes away, the head becomes clear, and the soul feels good and light. No matter what sin you have committed, you need to remember that the Lord loves everyone and is ready to forgive if a person repents with all his heart.

Text of Psalm 50 with accents

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your compassions, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; For I know my iniquity, and I will bear away my sin before me. I have sinned against You alone and have done evil before You, so that You may be justified in Your words and triumph over Your judgment. Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, you have loved the truth; You have shown me Your unknown and secret wisdom. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. There is joy and gladness in my ears; the bones of the humble will rejoice. Turn away Your face from my sins and cleanse all my iniquities. Create a pure heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Give me the joy of Your salvation and strengthen me with the Lord’s Spirit. I will teach the wicked your way, and wickedness will turn to you. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will declare Your praise. As if you had desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings. The sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God will not despise a contrite and humble heart. Bless Zion, O Lord, with Your favor, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then take pleasure in the sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and the burnt offering; then they will place your calf on the altar.

Psalm 50 is, in essence, a prayer to the Almighty for forgiveness of even the most terrible sins. The prayer must be read in order to understand the truth and not sin in the future. In our time, when people are no longer so reverent about faith and are sinning more and more, it is especially necessary to read this psalm so that the Lord not only forgives us, but also directs us to the true path.

Psalms 26, 50, 90 as part of Christian worship

Since Old Testament times, not a single divine service has been completed without the reading and singing of psalms. Thus, the 26th Psalm is read in the service of the 1st hour of the eternity of the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord and during tonsure into the ryassophore. The sacred lines of Psalm 50 are read by the priest at the main moments of the Divine Liturgy - during the transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.

The penitential psalm is also secretly read by the deacon during incense before the Great Entrance. The last verses of the psalm are pronounced by the priest after the Great Entrance. The 50th Psalm is also read in prayer services, after the third hour, in the rite of confession, and in requiem services. The 90th Psalm is read at the service of the 6th hour, which is dedicated to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ, as well as at Great Compline, funeral service and requiem.

Psalm of David. Before the anointing.1 The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life: whom shall I fear? 2 If evildoers, my adversaries and enemies, come upon me to devour my flesh, then they themselves will stumble and fall. 3 If an army takes up arms against me, my heart will not fear; if war arises against me, then I will trust in Him.4 I have asked one thing of the Lord, this only I seek, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to contemplate the beauty of the Lord and to visit His holy temple, 5 for He would cover me in His tabernacle in the day of trouble, He would hide me in the secret place of His habitation, He would lift me up on a rock. 6 Then my head would be lifted up above the enemies around me; and I would offer sacrifices of praise in His tabernacle, I would sing and make melody before the Lord. 7 Hear, O Lord, my voice with which I cry, have mercy on me and listen to me. 8 My heart speaks from You: seek My face; and I will seek Your face, O Lord. 9 Hide not Your face from me; do not reject Your servant in anger.   • If there is a threat to life and health;

Prayer to Saint Cyprian for protection from evil spells

It can be difficult to stop those who have chosen for themselves the life motto “In war as in war.” A person driven by motives of enmity and revenge is unable to understand their destructive power. Wanting to erase the object of hatred “to dust” at any cost, the embittered person does not disdain any means, including black magic.

Some are looking for a professional practitioner, while others are trying to do magic on their own. In both cases, the consequences can be disastrous for all participants in the situation.

The prayer to the Great Martyr Cyprian is amazing in its power. According to reviews, it can become a real talisman against all filth, destructive influences (voluntary or involuntary), envy, anger and troubles. Between the lines one can read the generosity of a true Christian, who does not want revenge on his enemies, but prays for mercy towards them, striving to live in harmony and love with everyone around him.

“Saint Cyprian, you are known to all believers as a comforter of suffering souls, a faithful saint of God and a true protector of righteous people from evil spells! I pray to you, servant of God (proper name), help me and do not leave me and my household in perdition. Protect us from human envy and anti-God witchcraft. Drive away from us the troubles and misfortunes directed at us by evil people. Don't let them influence our godly life. Grant us the opportunity to live in harmony and harmony in order to glorify the name of our Lord, the All-Merciful, and accept His will in everything. Saint Cyprian, hear my sincere prayer and lend a helping hand. Protect us from evil eyes and harmful words. You are my hope and I trust in you with all my heart. Amen".

How to read Psalm 26 to David correctly

The feeling of danger does not allow you to live in peace. The body is under extreme tension and its strength is quickly depleted. For any person, this condition in itself can be dangerous. Such a prayer will help you calm yourself, and turning to God will help you overcome the problem.

You need to read these psalms every day, as the holy fathers recommend. One of the revered elders, John of Optina, who was a priest on the Black Sea ships for more than 5 years before entering monasticism, said that reading such prayers every day can save you from fire and water and from an enemy bullet. Amulets against dark machinations have a strict sequence and special reading rules.

Prayer Psalm 26 should be read daily if you are in a difficult situation. It is not forbidden to say it twice a day - morning and evening. She bestows her protection when you don’t even imagine what could happen in the near future to your life and health.

The meaning of her words is to accept God’s will and renounce fear; the person praying asks the Lord only to be allowed to find him and be with him. Earthly enemies and anxieties are not scary if the one who prays has truth and confidence in God’s mercy on his side.

Psalm 50 is read to pray to God for forgiveness of sins and atonement for the guilt of the person praying. You need to say it when you feel guilty, a sin before the Lord. The meaning of her words is not a talisman, not protection, but precisely repentance.

Psalm 90 is a life-affirming song. It is read in situations where you are not just overwhelmed with anxiety, but when the danger around you can be fatal. It is read at the very moment of accomplishment of the deeds of the dark forces - during the severe stages of any illness or during a wound on the battlefield.

Its meaning is to ask God for health and help in difficult times. This is a protective prayer, it should protect from the most terrible of earthly fates - death. There are lines in the words that mean that for the one who prays there remains one refuge and one hope - trust in the Lord and refuge at his right hand.

As for the external form of reading, it involves breaking the text into its component parts, between which a glorification of God is read, as well as prayers for the health of family and friends. Despite the fact that the book of Psalms is included in the Bible, for prayer reading it is better to take the text from a special prayer book.

Spread of the Psalter

When starting to read a song of praise for protection from evil forces, one should not forget that in Orthodoxy there is no magic or any purely external protective rituals. It is completely useless and even harmful to the soul to read such prayers only for the purpose of formal protection.
