Adviсe

Parents should under no circumstances “cosset” Edik, they should not fulfill all his demands and wishes, no matter how much they would like to do this for a sweet and handsome boy.

This parental behavior can lead to Edward growing up into a narcissistic, arrogant, inert, selfish man. In addition, it is necessary to develop Eduard’s natural talents from childhood, as well as to promote the choice of certain professional activities in the future that correspond to the boy’s interests.

Traditionally, Christians named their children strictly according to the church charter, so there was no confusion between Name Day and Angel Day. Today, not everyone distinguishes between these two memorable dates.

Angel Edward Day

- this is the day of his baptism. It is called so because after the Sacrament a Guardian Angel appears at the baptized person, who accompanies and protects the ward.

And the Name Day named after Eduard

- This is the day of veneration of one of the saints named Edward.

Holy but not sinless

Edward belonged to the Anglo-Saxon dynasty of English kings.
They are placed outside the numbering brackets: for example, Edward Longshanks, also known as Edward I, lived two hundred years later than the unfortunate young man who could be called Edward II (but this is rarely done). Edward's father was Edgar the Peacemaker, a truly great king - perhaps the last of the great rulers of the Anglo-Saxon dynasty. At least he managed to subjugate other kings and thanks to this maintain peace and tranquility in the country. Edgar paid special attention to church reforms. Thus, it was under him that the phrase “king by God’s grace” began to be heard for the first time. By the way, he is also canonized - his memorial day is celebrated on July 8th. True, Saint Edgar was by no means sinless. He loved women. At least two of his wives are known - the first was most likely named Æthelflaed, and she was Edward's mother, and the second (possibly third) became a typical evil stepmother for the young king. Her name was Elfrida, she bore the king two sons, Ethelred and Edmund, and was crowned with him - the first king's wife in history to achieve these honors. There was also a mistress - Wulfrida, a former abbess of a convent. The king kidnapped her directly from this monastery, which brought upon himself the wrath of the church (but not very strong).

Edgar the Peacemaker

From Wulfrida the king had a daughter, Edith, who was later also canonized. There is, however, a version, first recorded about a hundred years after the death of Edward, which claims that he, too, was the son of the treacherously seduced Wulfrida. But most sources write about the existence of Edgar’s legal wife before Elfrida.

Edgar, having acquired numerous offspring, died at thirty-two, and the churchmen argued over which of the king’s sons should give the crown. Some of the clergy supported Ethelred, Elfrida's son, and some supported Edward. As a result, thirteen-year-old Edward ascended the throne. He didn’t yet know how to truly rule, but it was his reputation that was marked by a gloomy sign: in the same year 975, when Edgar died and Edward was crowned, a comet was seen in the sky during the harvest, and after that a “big storm” came among the English. hunger and great unrest." The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states that under the young king, "God's law was broken, Elfrida and the aldermen and many others ruled by monks, and bandits went wild... and robbed widows, and many untruths and evil deeds arose."

It was not the king’s people who robbed the widows, but the young man could not oppose the “bandits” with firm royal power.

Edward was not loved. The English historian and writer Daniel Christopher does not speak very favorably of the martyr king, saying that “the defiant behavior and insulting speech that the new king allowed himself very soon made him a very unpopular figure.” Every now and then, uprisings of large landowners broke out. The political stability that had developed under Edgar was lost.

Edward Martyr

In the same year, his sister, the future Saint Edith, became a nun. Soon after her brother's coronation, according to legend, she had a dream in which the young king lost his right eye. The dream was repeated, Edita told the nuns about it, considering it a sign of the imminent death of her half-brother, but they did not listen to her.

Edward himself, apparently, was very religious, like his father. But the king was unable to restrain the above-mentioned robbers of widows: thus, the noble landowner Elfhere of Mercia and his people captured and ruined the monasteries, giving their territories to his associates. “Edward’s Party” tried to protect the monks and monastic lands as best they could. The young man was supported by the “three great saints of England” - Oswald, Ethelwold and Saint Dunstan. It is obvious, however, that the pious, but too young king was not able to subjugate England to his will, as Edgar did.
