When a pet dies and there is no place to bury it, a natural question arises for the owner: “What to do?” Today we will talk about how this situation is being resolved in the world, about the rules of burial in Russia and why it is impossible to arrange spontaneous cemeteries for pets.
In many countries there are special cemeteries for animals
What does the law say about animal burial?
Animals cannot be buried in the usual way - they must be cremated. Both the law (Article 10.8 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation) and common sense speak for this. The fact is that even after complete decomposition of the body, harmful spores remain in the soil, and the danger of infection remains in this place: it does not matter whether groundwater flows here or another animal digs up the burial site.
If the site of such a burial is discovered by veterinary service workers, they are obliged to dig up and dispose of the remains, and if you, as the owner, are also identified, you will pay a fine of up to 5,000 rubles. In any case, you will lose a memorable place.
Where should you not bury a cat?
To avoid problems with neighbors and other people, it is worth considering that in some places you cannot bury pets.
How to raise a kitten correctly and make it affectionate and calm
The following are prohibited:
- front gardens near residential buildings, children's playgrounds;
- city parks;
- places near bodies of water;
- cemeteries for people.
Psychologists also do not recommend burying a pet on personal plots, citing the fact that a nearby grave will constantly remind you of the pet and cause bitterness and pain.
If you decide to put the cat to rest at the dacha, then you should follow all the rules. For work you will need a shovel, gloves, and a box.
You need to act in this order:
- Dig a hole of suitable size.
- The bottom layer is made of bleach.
- Place the body in a box or a special coffin, close it tightly and bandage it.
- You can put your pet’s favorite things and toys in a box or grave.
- Lower the container into the hole and carefully cover it with earth.
- Compact it well, put a funeral stone or just cobblestones on top to limit access to the grave.
If desired, the burial site can be decorated with flowers.
Important! All terms and conditions must be followed to avoid legal problems.
Ashes after cremation can be buried or scattered, but it is worth remembering that in some places such procedures cannot be carried out.

How does the church feel about burying pets “humanely”?
Contrary to the opinion of religiously illiterate people, the Christian Church does not consider this a sin. Firstly, it is believed that even in such a “trifle” a person should not exalt himself above other creations of God; secondly, many priests agree that man has an unpayable debt to animals - since it was because of the original sin of the first people that animals were also sent to earth, where they received mortal bodies, vulnerable to disease and death.
Well, readers familiar with the Book of Ecclesiastes will definitely remember how the speaker equates the soul of “cattle” with the soul of man.
What to do with the body of an animal if it cannot be buried
By law, animal corpses are cremated or disinfected in biothermal pits (these are special isolated structures in which bodies decompose faster and without the danger of introducing bacteria into groundwater). The second method is usually used for farm animals.
Pets are cremated in ovens of special services.
Special measures are also in place for the place where the animal died. If the body was lying on the ground, it must be disinfected. According to the law, to do this, you need to sprinkle the area with dry bleach at the rate of 5 kilograms per square meter and dig it to a depth of 25 centimeters.
Pet cremation
Cremation of pets is carried out by specialized services, private and public veterinary clinics; you can bring the body yourself or ask the staff to pick it up themselves.
The price of animal cremation is comparable to the price of human cremation: you will have to pay up to 4,500 rubles for it, and on average the same amount for a place in a columbar niche or a separate plot of land in a specialized pet cemetery.
In any case, the veterinarian in your area (district, village, city) must know where to send you - in large cities, most veterinary services actively cooperate with funeral agencies. If you live in a small town and absolutely want to do it legally, you will have to take the body to the nearest large city, preferably on the day of the pet's death.
Otherwise, you will have to break the law, but this should be done as “cleanly” as possible.
What about in Russia?
Unfortunately, in our country, official cemeteries where you can bury a pet dog or other animal are rather a rarity, which can be found in Moscow, St. Petersburg or some other large cities. In particular, this is due to the fact that in order to organize a graveyard for pets, it is necessary to comply with the general norms and rules prescribed in SanPiN 2.1.2882-11 “Hygienic requirements for the placement, arrangement and maintenance of cemeteries, buildings and structures for funeral purposes.”
Therefore, Russians often resort to illegal burial of animals. The law in this regard is so imperfect that the likelihood of an individual receiving a fine or other punishment for this is reduced to almost zero. As a result, in literally every settlement of our country you can find spontaneous cemeteries for pets - on the edges of forests, near reservoirs, along roads. Many people bury their pets in their own summer cottages or in any other place that seems suitable for this. And yet no one thinks about the danger of unauthorized graveyards.
In our country, such spontaneous pet cemeteries can be found in literally every forest.
Where and how to bury a pet yourself?
We remind you that ordinary burial is an administrative violation. If, after all, you are determined to bury your pet in the usual way, as most of us do, follow the following tips.
- Find a high, dry place for the grave away from communications and wells.
- Try to bury the animal in a plastic bag or wooden, or better yet, a metal box. It is possible to bury an animal wrapped in cloth only if it died a natural death from old age, and it is guaranteed not from an infection.
- Dig the hole deeper - preferably at least a meter deep.
- Cover the bottom of the pit with bleach or lime; after you place the bundle or box with the body there, fill it with bleach again: this way you will slightly reduce the spread of corpse poisons in the soil.
It would seem possible, why not?
Often a pet becomes a member of the family or the only companion for a person. When it dies, the owner wants to bury his friend “humanely.” And why not do it right next to the house in the front garden or flowerbed?
Any landscaped green area nearby, just a noticeable tree or stone can become a worthy place for the final resting place of your favorite cat or bob.
We do not have a general culture of burying animals. And it seems that each owner is free to resolve this issue in his own way, which is what happens. On the Internet you can find various tips on what to do in the event of the death of an animal.
Some people advise finding a box and going into the forest with a shovel, while others are more knowledgeable and recommend contacting a specialized veterinary organization that can take the animal’s body for storage or even organize a ceremony.
Not everyone will find the time and opportunity to go into the forest. And taking an animal to a veterinarian and leaving it there may seem heartless. And veterinary rituals in a specialized organization cost money. Therefore, the decision to arrange a grave near home is a simple and obvious solution for many. And free.
Often near a residential building you can find a memorial created in the image and likeness of a human being. Such burials evoke different reactions: some are sympathetic, while others do not like walking past a grave every day to work.
But when discussing whether it is worth installing a tombstone for an animal (sometimes you can even find a cross), and in general, whether a trembling creature has the right to be buried “humanly,” you can miss a really important point related not to morality and morality, but to legislation.

How to decorate a pet's grave?
In illegal pet cemeteries, you can only see homemade monuments: cellophane-wrapped or laminated photos on plywood signs with handwritten inscriptions, “flower beds” made from old boxes, and rarely, tin plates with engraved names and dates of birth and death.
At official burial sites there are real monuments, comparable in cost to those on a budget for a person. Most often these are monuments made of polymer granite - a cast material made from granite chips and polymer. They are not as expensive as natural stone ones, but last for several decades. As on monuments for people, such tombstones are fully laser engraved with a photograph of the animal, often in full height.
Almost no such monument is complete without an epitaph: in them, loving owners try to reflect their love and longing for their pet - everything here is exactly like with people.

How to properly bury a pet? Is it possible and necessary to cremate him, or bury him in the usual way? What does the law say about this and are such funerals considered a sin in Christianity?
Memory fee
Individual cremation, depending on the weight of the animal, will cost from four to 11 thousand rubles. General, together with other animals, is cheaper - from one and a half to five thousand. This price includes a plastic bin. Next you need to choose a place where the ashes will rest. The cemetery has a common area for graves and the so-called “Alley of Heroes” - it goes straight from the entrance, mainly titled animals are buried here. For a grave in the common area you will have to pay four thousand a year, and the same for a cell in a columbarium. But a place on the “Alley of Heroes” will cost 12 thousand. You can scatter ashes for free in the “Garden of Memories” over a special well. Monuments are also sold here, the average price is 15 thousand rubles.
“The urn can then be reburied. It is very comfortable. If a person can no longer pay for a separate grave, then at any time he can exhume the animal and scatter the ashes or rebury it at the dacha, explains administrator Irina. – If a person stops paying, we always call him. If he doesn’t get in touch for a long time, we exhume the urn and it is stored in the warehouse for six months free of charge. Only after this do we scatter the ashes in the “Garden of Memories.”

She recalls how one man brought to them a cat that had lain in the ground for six months. In Dzerzhinsky, near Moscow, in 2011, they decided to expand the human cemetery to include an area with spontaneous burials, so the graves of animals had to be dug up. Irina became gloomy: “People took their pets, but they buried them there without cremation. One man brought us a pug that had been lying in the ground for six months to be cremated. It was a terrible sight."
