The image of the Almighty Father is considered unique and has been known since ancient times. More often on icons, Hosts appears as a gray-haired old man on a throne, with great wisdom and calmness visible in His eyes. The face of the Lord the Father in the images is placed in a symbolic triangle, which tells Orthodox believers about the presence of the Holy Trinity, originating from the Almighty and One God himself.

In front of the icon of Hosts, they ask for the remission of vicious sins, for giving strength to perform beneficial deeds that cleanse the heart and environment.

Historical reference

Hosts - one of the names of the Most High God, mentioned in the Holy Scriptures, is of Hebrew origin and translated means “army” (that is, the Lord who created the army).

By the armies of the Creator we mean:

  • defenders of Israeli lands;
  • heavenly servants of God;
  • the hosts of saints surrounding Him;
  • stars and other similar space objects.

The phrase “Lord of Hosts” took root in the Old Testament period. As a cult name, it was used in the sanctuaries of the Hebrew city of Shiloh and was associated with the Christian Ark of the Covenant.

Description of the icon

In Byzantium, images of the Almighty Father were not created or used; in the Russian iconographic tradition, the image appeared in the 16th century. At the heart of creation was the face of the Savior of the Old Denmi (Incarnation of the Eternal Son).

The Lord blesses his own people with both hands or holds a scroll or book. His clothes are snow-white, the folds of his chiton are filled with pink shades, his himation (cloak) is green, his hair flows evenly over his shoulders.

The halo has a star shape, made up of the intersection of two rhombuses.

Icon of the Lord of Hosts

The image first appeared on an icon called “The Last Judgment.” Father Hosts is shown several times in each of the four compositions of this painting.

  • On the first mark, God is resting on a bed after the creation of the world, in His hands is a crucifix and a vessel (a symbol of sending the Son for sacrifice), and on His head is a crown.
  • In the second composition, the Lord of hosts is depicted waist-deep and wearing a medallion.
  • On the third - He sits on a throne and holds a scroll, next to the right is the risen Christ, and between Them there is the Holy Spirit, crowning the Trinity.
  • The fourth mark, called “Come, O People,” shows God seated on the cherubim throne, resplendent with glory, and with the Holy Scriptures opened in his right hands.
  • The image of the God of Hosts was widely used in painting icons, creating literary miniatures and murals. In Russian churches of the 16th century, the image of the Lord the Father was often placed on the inside of the main dome. The paintings could be observed in the cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin, the church in Vyazyoma (Odintsovo), and also in the Yaroslavl monastery.

Important! Saint Basil the Great taught that the true God has no form and cannot be known, so there is no need to strain your imagination to see Him. One should not confuse material achievements with the endless and indescribable effulgence of the Lord. Any concept that approaches the image of Him turns our knowledge into idolatry.

It must be remembered: the icon is a kind of guide for those who have not yet cleared their minds of sinfulness. Saints see God with their inner light, which is also beyond description.

History of iconography

The Orthodox images of the Host of the Father in the composition entitled “Fatherland” directly corresponded to the face of the Ancient Denmi (Incarnation of the Eternal Son) used in Byzantine culture. A similar style was used for wall paintings and as lectern faces.

Other options for depicting the Lord in various guises are found in the compositions of many icons, such as: “Annunciation”, “Nativity of the Mother of God”, “Protection of the Mother of God”, “Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Disciples of Christ”, “Sovereign” icon of the Blessed Virgin, etc. .

  • In miniatures created in the 16th century, He is shown as being in the heavenly spheres and blessing humanity. In His left right hand is the power, as in the scene called "Creation."
  • During the period from the 17th to the 18th centuries. The Lord Father appears in wall paintings of churches in the Balkan region. The composition “Fatherland” finds a place in the monasteries of Macedonia and Romania.

  • At the Moscow Council, held in 1667, the image of the Most High Father was prohibited from being used on icons, shorthand and miniatures. The law was based on the opinion that this image does not correspond to the canons of the Orthodox faith, since God - the First Hypostasis of the Holy Trinity - cannot be imagined and depicted in the true light.
  • However, the ban did not prevent the most significant compositions (“Fatherland” and “Co-throne”) from continuing to be created. They were placed on the insides of main domes and other parts of churches. Despite the easily visible symbolic connection between the Lord of Hosts and the first Hypostasis of the Trinity, the name “God the Father” was not written under the icons. The wide distribution of these images in Russia is due to their correlation with the faces of Jesus.

Prayers to God the Father

In Rus', a prayer request addressed directly to the first Hypostasis was of great importance. Since ancient times, the akathist, which is part of the structure of certain solemn prayers, has been read during church services.

There is a slight difference from the generally accepted texts: the word “Rejoice,” which traditionally ends the ikos, is replaced by “Lord God.” Hosts here are called the Leader of the Heavenly Hosts, and the akathist itself is imbued with an atmosphere of deep reverence for the Creator. Therefore, the phrase “have mercy on me!” sounds like a legitimate appeal of a created being to its Creator.

Upon careful reading of the prayer text, God the Father sees a statement of the Christian doctrine of the Holy Trinity.

In a concise but precise form, the akathist reveals the main events of the history of the Church from the days of creation to the all-merciful sacrifice of Christ.

This characteristic, coupled with the highly artistic style of construction and transmission of information, elevates the prayer appeal to the Lord to the rank of the greatest works of hymnography.

On canvases, the Lord often appears as a wise, gray-haired old man, symbolizing the first face of the Trinity. Icons of God the Father have become widespread since the 16th century; believers turn to them to receive liberation from sinfulness.

Despite the theological prohibition of using the image of Hosts, His images are visible on the inner sides of domes, iconographic compositions and various miniatures.

First of all, we should clarify the origin of the phrase “God of Hosts,” which is often found in the Bible and denotes one of the names of our Lord - the Creator of the universe and all things.

It came from Hebrew, or rather, from its oldest form - Aramite, the language in which most of the books of Holy Scripture were compiled.

It is pronounced by the children of Israel as “Zevaot” (צבאות), since it is the plural of the word “army”, which sounds like “tzava” (צבא) in Hebrew.

Lord of the heavenly and earthly armies

According to Orthodox tradition, it is usually translated into Russian with the expression “Lord of the Angelic Hosts.” Thus, in contrast to other names of the Most High found in biblical texts, the word Hosts emphasizes his strength and omnipotence.

Since this name is derived from the word "host", there is a misconception that the God of Hosts is a personification of the God of War.

However, biblical scholars rightly point out that it is not found in texts corresponding to the period of the most active military actions of the Jewish people, for example, the era of the conquest of Canaan.

On the contrary, its very frequent use is noted in the books of the prophets and psalms dating back to a later period, when the tribes of Israel began their peaceful development.

Thus, the expression Lord-God of Hosts is not limited to any narrow spectrum of his understanding, but carries within itself the meaning of the almighty ruler and ruler of all earthly and heavenly powers. According to the biblical view, the stars and everything that fills the firmament are also part of His vast army.

Lord infinite and omnipresent

Another name for the God of Hosts is also widely known - Jehovah (יהוה), translated as “He will be” or “He lives.”

It does not carry any semantic difference and is used only as an alternative.

It is interesting to note that found in the original text of the Bible, this word, like other names of God, is traditionally unpronounceable for Jews due to their admiration for the greatness of the Creator.

We find an example of how one of the names of the God of Hosts is used in the Old Testament in chapter 3 of the Book of Exodus, which is part of the Pentateuch of Moses. Those familiar with the text of the Holy Scriptures well remember the episode when the prophet Moses, while he was a shepherd for the priest of the land of Midian, Jethro, received a command from the Lord to lead his people out of Egyptian slavery.

This great event took place on Mount Hariv, where the Almighty spoke to his prophet from the flames that engulfed the bush.

To Moses’ question about what to answer to his fellow tribesmen when they asked about the name of God who sent him to them, He answered literally: “I am who I am.” The original text used the Hebrew word יהוה, that is, “Jehovah.”

It is not the name of God in the commonly used sense of the word, but only indicates His infinite existence.

Here we note that in the Bible you can find other names of God. In addition to those mentioned above, there are such Old Testament ones as Elohim, Adonai, Yahweh and a number of others. In the New Testament this name is Jesus, translated as Savior, and Christ is the Anointed One.

Unmerged and indivisible hypostases of God

It has been noted that since the 16th century, on Orthodox icons of the Holy Trinity, the image of the God of Hosts corresponds to one of Her three hypostases - God the Father. This is evidenced by the inscriptions made near His figure. However, this does not mean at all that when we pronounce the name of hosts, we mean only God the Father.

As Holy Tradition teaches us, all three hypostases of the Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - exist neither together nor separately. They cannot be separated from each other, just as it is impossible to imagine the shining disk of the sun without the light it emits and the heat it emits. All of them are three hypostases of one essence, called the Sun - one in all the diversity of its manifestations.

So is the Almighty. The divine energy that created the visible and invisible world is perceived by us as the image of God the Father. His will, embodied in the Word, took the form of the eternal Son Jesus Christ.

And the power through which the Lord acts in people and the Church He created is the Holy Spirit. All these three hypostases are components of the one God, and therefore, when we name one of them, we also mean the other two.

That is why the expression God the Father, Lord of Hosts, includes a reference to both the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Divine power embodied in the name

In Orthodox theology, the Divine names reflect the totality of its manifestations in the world around us. For this reason He has many names. In the diversity of His relationship to the created (that is, created by Him) world, the Lord gives Himself to everything that exists, sending down His infinite Grace to it. Its manifestations in our lives are limitless.

It is important to keep in mind that Divine names are not an independent rational concept, but only recreate His image in the world around us.

For example, the expression God of Hosts, as mentioned above, emphasizes His power over all earthly and heavenly powers, and Jehovah testifies to the infinity of existence.

As the outstanding theologian of the 3rd century, the first bishop of Paris, Saint Dionysius, pointed out in his writings, the names of God are “the created analogue of the uncreated Creator.”

Names of the Lord in the writings of Saint Dionysius

Developing his teaching, the theologian used a number of terms used in ordinary speech to designate purely positive concepts as Divine names. For example, the God of Hosts is referred to by him as Goodness. He gives this name to the Lord in view of the indescribable goodness that He generously exudes to the entire world He created.

The radiant radiance with which God fills the earth gives Saint Dionysius the basis to call Him Light, and the charm He gives to His creations - Beauty.

Combining these concepts into one word, he gives God the name Love.

In the works of Dionysius we also encounter such names of the Lord as Good, Unity, Life, Wisdom and many others, the justification of which follows from the very doctrine of the One and Ever-Eternal God.

Prayer born on the banks of the Neva

A similar naming of God with words characterizing His main qualities can be found in the well-known prayer to the Lord, composed by the righteous saint John of Kronstadt.

In it, calling God Strength, the saint prays to support him, who is exhausted and falling.

Calling the Almighty Light, he asks to enlighten the soul darkened by worldly passions, and giving Him the name Mercy, he hopes for boundless mercy.

Hymns of praise that came to Rus' from Byzantium

In the very first years that followed the baptism of Rus', on lands sanctified by the light of the true faith, an active process of translation from Greek into Russian of various liturgical texts that came to us from Byzantium began. A significant place among them was occupied by akathists, belonging to the genre of Orthodox hymnography and representing songs of praise written in honor of the Lord God, His Most Pure Mother, as well as angels and saints.

The structural feature of akathists is the presence of a short introduction, called kukulia, followed by 12 large stanzas, called ikos, ending with a constant refrain beginning with the words “Rejoice...”, and the same number of small stanzas - kontakia, at the end of each of which stands “ Hallelujah!"

Akathist to the Eternal God

It is hardly possible to determine with certainty the historical period in which “Akathist to the God of Hosts” was written, but, once in Rus', it took a strong place in Russian hymnography.

Since time immemorial, its text has been read both as part of certain holiday prayers and during general services.

The text of the akathist, both in the old printed tradition and in the handwritten version, was traditionally placed in such liturgical books as the Akathestnik, Book of Hours, Psalter Followed, as well as the Lenten Triodion.

It differs from the traditional writing of akathists only in that the words “Rejoice...” that conclude each ikos are replaced by ones more consistent with the general content - “Lord God...”.

From the first lines, in which the Lord is called the Chosen Leader of the Fiery and Heavenly Forces, the entire text of the akathist is imbued with the spirit of high veneration for the Creator of the universe, and therefore the generally accepted in Orthodoxy “have mercy on me!” sounds like a natural and logical appeal of a creature to its Creator.

Upon careful reading of the text, it is not difficult to verify that the Akathist to the God of Hosts is a fairly complete presentation of the Christian teaching about the Triune God.

In addition, in an extremely compressed form, but deep in content, it presents the main events of Sacred history from the Creation of the world to the Sacrifice of Christ.

This feature, combined with the high artistry of the construction and transmission of the material, makes this akathist one of the most striking works of Christian hymnography.
