Silouan of Athos is an amazing Holy man. In the world he bore the name Semyon. He was born into the family of a Tambov peasant in 1866. From his youth, he dreamed of going to serve in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. His faith was deep from childhood. Despite all this, he had some doubts about the existence of God. But he promised himself to grow up and find it. When his faith was strengthened again, and this happened while he was working as a carpenter, the boy came to his father and began to ask for a blessing for monastic life in the Lavra. His father was not against it and blessed him, but asked him to go into monastic life only after he completed his military service.

Over the years of his young life, the young man sinned a lot. He also took part in fights, he drank, hung out with girls, and smoked. But only after his second vision, after another walk, he fell into a shallow sleep and it seemed to him that a snake had climbed into his mouth, the young man firmly decided to radically change his life and devote himself to service.

He served and died on Mount Athos at the age of 72. His sainthood was accepted by the Moscow Patrarch in 1991.

The Athonite elder Silouan had great physical strength. He could eat 50 eggs at a time. Moreover, he was not a hero of spirit. He overcame a fairly large number of temptations. The main feature of the Saint was humility and love for enemies. Agree, these character traits are not subject to everyone. As Silouan argued, whoever does not love his enemies will not be able to receive the full grace that the Lord gives through love for his enemies.

Posthumous miracles through the prayers of Silouan of Athos

After the death of Silouan, real miracles began to appear from his relics. After the book about the elder became widely known abroad, many pilgrims began to come to his relics to venerate and pray.

It is worth noting that under Abbot Makedonov, the head was revealed to people in a very beautiful octagonal cypress ark, washed with rose water. True, there were no relics there. Since the righteous man was canonized only in 1991.

Pilgrims from all over the world reverently venerated the head and read a prayer to St. Silouan of Athos. One day, during Peter's Fast, a Greek came to Mount Athos with a seriously ill 14-year-old boy. The boy was shaking and twitching all over. The father asked to be taken to the head of Elder Silouan of Athos.

At the request of the father, the head of the monk was attached to the head and hands. And they forgot to put it on their feet. A real miracle happened. Those parts that were twitching in the boy were healed. A month later, father and son came to the head again to treat their legs. After applying the head to the feet, they were also healed.

Father Chubar, who became a housekeeper after the saint’s death, more than once recalled how he was saved from premature death by Saint Silouan. This happened when he and his father Kirill bought mullet fish from a fisherman and cooked fish soup. Father Chubar took the head of the fish, after eating it, and went to his cell before the service.

As it turned out later, the fish was poisoned. Since the fisherman used poison to catch it, which was concentrated in the head. In his cell he became very ill, and he understood that due to his poisoning he had very little time to live. But suddenly he saw the doors open and the saint approached him. Silouan of Athos. With the words “What, are you sick?” ran his hand over it.

After which his illness instantly disappeared somewhere, and his father got up and went. But Elder Silouan was no longer in his cell. And the door remained as it was, locked with a hook.

There are a lot of such stories. He helped many people heal from various ailments. He also guided those who had lost their way in life onto the true path. His icon today is one of the most revered among Orthodox believers. And the book about him has been translated into 50 languages and is reread a certain number of times by many believers.

The monk was a strong spirit and physically powerful man. A real Russian hero. His character was soft and forgiving.

One day he had a dream that a snake was crawling into his mouth. I woke up in horror and heard the beautiful voice of the Mother of God: “Are you disgusted? I also hate to see what you do with your life.” For the rest of his life, the monk thanked the Mother of God for this instruction.

We will describe the main prayers below. They must be read at the icon of the saint.

Prayer of Silouan of Athos, text

God, enlighten us with Your Holy Spirit, so that we all understand Your love. Those who ask me for prayers, for those I tearfully ask the Lord: “Lord, give them Your Holy Spirit, so that they may know You through the Holy Spirit. Merciful Lord, teach us all by Your Holy Spirit to live according to Your will, so that in Your Light we all come to know You, the true God, for without Your Light we cannot understand the fullness of Your love. Enlighten us with Your grace, and it will warm our hearts to love You.

Most merciful Master, grant us a humble spirit, so that our souls may find peace in You.” “Most Holy Mother of the Lord, ask, O Merciful One, for us a humble spirit. All saints, you live in heaven and see the glory of the Lord, and your spirit rejoices - pray that we too may be with you. My soul is also drawn to see the Lord and misses Him in humility, as unworthy of this good.”

“Merciful Lord, teach us Your humility by the Holy Spirit. Lord, correct us, as a tender mother corrects her little children. Let every soul know the joy of Your Coming and the power of Your help. Give coolness to the suffering souls of Your people, and teach us all through the Holy Spirit to know You. The human soul languishes on earth. Lord, even with his mind he cannot be strengthened in You, because he does not know You and Your goodness.”

“O Lord, teach us by Your Holy Spirit to be obedient and self-controlled. Give us the spirit of Adam's repentance and tears for our sins. May we praise and thank You forever. You gave us Your most pure body and blood, so that we could live with You forever, and be where You are, and see Your glory.”

“Lord, let the peoples of the whole earth know how much You love us and what a wonderful life You give to those who believe in You. Have mercy on me, O God, Thy fallen creation. How many times have You given me Your grace, and I have not kept it, because my soul is vain; but my soul knows You, the Creator and my God, and therefore I seek You, weeping, as Joseph wept for his father Jacob at the tomb of his mother[17], being taken into Egyptian slavery.

I offend You with my sins, and You leave me, and my soul misses You. O Holy Spirit, do not leave me. When You leave me, bad thoughts come to me and my soul misses You to the point of great tears.”

Prayer to Silouan of Athos for despondency

Lord, give me Your humble spirit, so that I may not lose Your grace and not begin to weep for it, as Adam wept for paradise and God. Lord, You are Merciful; tell me what should I do to humble my soul? Lord, grant us the gift of Your holy humility. Lord, grant us freely your humble Holy Spirit, just as you came freely to save people and take them to heaven so that they may see your glory. Most Holy Mother of the Lord, ask, O Merciful One, for us a humble spirit. All Saints, you live in heaven, and you see the glory of the Lord, and your spirit rejoices.

The Lord is always with you!

Orthodox Christians come to Athos from all over the world, venerate the relics of the Saint, pray to the icon of Silouan and receive miraculous healing.

Saint Silouan slept 15-20 minutes a day and worked hard

Silouan saw how Jesus loved people: “He stretched out his hands on the Cross to gather everyone.” He wished everyone the love of God.

During his years of service, the Monk Silouan lived a life of strict asceticism. He strictly limited himself in food. I slept for 15-20 minutes several times a day, sitting on a stool. There was never a bed in his cell. The Holy Elder worked hard during the day, and prayed all night long. At night he wrote texts in which he gently addressed the Orthodox with instructions.

Silouan lived in this mode until the end of his days. Even when he began to grow old and weaken, he continued to live without night sleep.

Silouan left behind writings. A book about love for the Lord.

The monk wrote: “Every day we nourish our body and breathe air so that it lives. But the soul needs the Lord and the grace of the Holy Spirit...Lord, give them the Holy Spirit...” Such was his monastic feat, his own path to holiness.

Iconography by M. Mironenko. The Monk Silouan of Athos sits on a stool in his cell. He sat on a stool and dozed; there was no bed in the cell.

Memory: September 11/24

A simple monk from a Russian monastery on Mount Athos. He was honored with deep repentant feelings and prayerfulness. To his question: “Lord, what should I do to pray to You with a pure mind? ...so that my soul may be humbled?” I received the well-known short and succinct answer: “Keep your mind in hell, and do not despair.” They pray to the Monk Silouan for the gift of humility and love for all people, in case of obsession with fornication, drunkenness, anger, for help in monastic work, for the enlightenment of peoples with the light of the true faith.

The Monk Silouan called to pray for enemies and live in humility

Silouan of Athos is a man of amazing holiness. He walked his earthly path from a peasant boy to a revered holy elder in Orthodoxy, and lived in a monastery for 46 years in constant prayer. Books have been written about him, stories have been filmed in different languages of the world. Saint Silouan is called a witness of divine love. Pilgrims flock to the places of his ministry who want to touch the history of the earthly life of the Saint.

Humility and love for enemies. The concepts that Silouan spoke about. To love your enemy means to find peace in your soul. As long as people pray for their enemies, the universe stands and the Antichrist will not come to earth.

Silouan said that you cannot pray only for yourself. All humanity needs compassion, even our enemies. We need to forgive offenders and pray for them with love, as for our own children. He urged us to accept humility, to rely in everything on the will of the Lord and to acquire the Holy Spirit with a quiet heart.

In his prayers, he asked the Lord for all Christians:

“...teach us all, by your Holy Spirit, your humility... He who humbles himself has overcome his enemies... Give us a humble spirit...”
