Life of Macarius Zhabynsky Belevsky and texts of prayers to the venerable wonderworker

Venerable Macarius Zhabynsky

Macarius Zhabynsky
(1539 - 1623), Belevsky Wonderworker, Venerable Memory on January 22, September 22 and in the Cathedral of Tula Saints

Born in 1539. In his early youth, he took monastic vows with the name Onufriy and in 1585 founded the Zhabynskaya Vvedenskaya hermitage near the Oka River, not far from the city of Belev. In 1615, the desert was completely devastated by Polish troops under the command of Lisovsky. Returning to the ashes, the monk became the renovator of the monastery. He again gathered the brethren, and instead of a wooden one, a stone church was built in honor of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the temple, with a bell tower at the gate. The monk spent his life in severe monastic deeds, enduring frost, heat, hunger and thirst, as was recorded in the monastic synod. Often he retired to the thicket of the forest, where he prayed to God alone.

One day, when the monk was walking along a forest path, he heard a faint groan. He looked around and saw a Pole leaning against the trunk of a pine tree, who was reclining in exhaustion. His saber lay nearby. He fell behind his squad and got lost in the forest. In a barely audible voice, the enemy, perhaps robbing the monastery, asked for a drink. Love and compassion prevailed in the monk. With a prayer to the Lord, he struck the ground with his staff, from which a cool spring gushed, and gave water to the dying man.

When the restored monastery became stronger in external and internal life, Saint Onuphrius left general monastic life and, entrusting the brethren to the reliable leadership of one of his disciples, accepted the schema with the name Macarius. For his place of solitude, he chose the upper reaches of the Zhabynka channel - the “Zhabynets well”, located one verst from the mouth of the channel and the bank of the Oka River.

The schematic exploits of the Monk Macarius were hidden not only from the world, but also from the brethren who loved him. He died at the age of 84 in 1623, at night, when the roosters crowed, and was buried on January 22 opposite the gates of the monastery, near the place where the church in his name was subsequently built.

The Life of Belevsky Wonderworker Macarius Zhabynsky

The years of life of Macarius Zhabynsky fell on the troubled, terrible times of the reign of Ivan the Terrible. Information about the family and place of birth of the saint has not been preserved. The exact date of his birth is not known, only the year - 1539. When and how the ascetic took monastic vows also remains a mystery for posterity.

The Zhabynskaya Hermitage itself was founded in 1585. Land near Belev, as well as nearby villages, were granted by the king to a certain elder Onufriy. According to the royal decree, Father Onuphry was supposed to build the Church of the Entry of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the lands given to him, which was done. It is assumed that this elder was Macarius, who bore the name Onufriy before taking the schema.

But the situation of the Belevsky lands was difficult due to their close location to the border of the Polish-Lithuanian state. Enemy troops constantly raided Russian lands, plundering and killing. In 1615, after another raid by enemies led by Lisovsky, the Zhabynsky monastery was plundered and burned.

Saint Macarius at this time was in the forest thicket, where he preferred to pray alone. Noticing the fire, the monk hurried to the monastery. Suddenly he heard groans. It turned out that a wounded Polish soldier was lying under a tree asking for water. But the river was far away, and there was no water anywhere nearby. Macarius, despite the fact that the warrior may have been one of those who destroyed his monastery, decided to help the wounded man. The monk, deeply believing in the power of the Lord, struck the ground with his staff, and water immediately began to flow from there. This is how the miraculous spring Zhabynets was formed, which still exists today, giving healing to many people.

After the invaders left, the miracle worker returned to his native place, starting to restore the monastery. Gathering the surviving inhabitants, the monk, together with them, erected a new temple of stone, becoming the first abbot of the revived Zhabynsky monastery.

After the restoration of the ruined temple, the abbot completely devoted himself to monastic feats, spending most of his time in prayer. The abbot, by his example, showed the monks how a true ascetic should live. Thanks to the saint’s feat of prayer, the monastery began to prosper, and the number of brethren constantly increased.

Having completed the improvement of the monastery and making sure that the monastery was sufficiently fortified, the Zhabynsky abbot decided to transfer control to one of his students. Always striving for solitude, the saint left the monastery, settling not far from the Zhabyntsa treasure trove and adopting the schema under the name Macarius.

The saint lived there until he was 84 years old, dying on January 22, 1623. The saint was buried opposite the monastery gates.

Veneration in Orthodoxy

The Monk Macarius was canonized at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries. According to ancient legends, at first the saint’s tomb was publicly accessible; the relics were placed under cover much later, by the disciples of Macarius.

During the reign of Empress Catherine II, a decree was adopted on the abolition of poor monasteries that did not own land, which also affected the Zhabynskaya Hermitage. After the monastery was closed, Father Macarius was gradually forgotten, but local residents continued to honor the memory of the saint.

In 1776, after a fire that destroyed the Assumption Sharov Monastery in the Kaluga province, many monks came to the Zhabynskaya Hermitage, where part of the monastery’s buildings remained intact. From that time on, the revival of the Belevsky Monastery began.

Since 1875, Father Jonah was the rector of the monastery. The new abbot of Zhabyn submitted a petition to the Holy Synod for the resumption of church-wide veneration of St. Macarius. His petition was supported by local residents who had not lost faith in the holiness of the miracle worker.

Finally, on January 2, 1888, the Tula archpastor received a synodal decree to restore the honor of Macarius Zhabynsky. The day of remembrance of the saint became the date of his death - January 22 according to the old calendar (February 4 according to the new calendar).

The year 1889 was marked by the foundation stone of a temple dedicated to the Zhabynsky saint. Father Jonah, who was then still the abbot of the monastery, agreed with the construction manager about the discovery of the holy relics of the miracle worker. But Macarius, appearing in a dream to both participants, forbade them to do this, threatening them with punishment.

Celebrations dedicated to the holy ascetic also take place on September 22 according to the old calendar (October 5 according to the new style).

Zhabynskaya water heals!

There are legends about the healing properties of the spring. They say that about ten years ago, a resident of Belev’s son became seriously ill: the child’s head became huge and scary. The doctors refused to treat her, and the mother went on foot to the Zhabynskaya hermitage. The unfortunate woman fervently prayed to St. Macarius. And when she returned home, her son, who had already recovered, met her! Five years ago, a 45-year-old St. Petersburg woman with a serious spinal disease was brought to Zhabyn. She was immersed in a healing spring on a special sheet, and she left her crutches! The spring also helps men: an Afghan officer was healed of his wounds in the Zhabynsky spring - a friend brought him there in a wheelchair, and both returned home “on their own.”

What is asked of the Venerable Wonderworker Macarius Zhabynsky Belevsky

After the death of the ascetic, many miracles were performed near his grave. Macarius Zhabynsky is most often approached with requests for healing.

There are several famous cases of miraculous healing, including the following:

  • boy from dropsy of the head;
  • a disabled person from the Afghan war who could not walk after being wounded;
  • a resident of St. Petersburg suffering from a spinal disease.

The miraculous Makaryevsky spring has special healing powers, helping to get rid of various diseases not only for Orthodox Christians, but also for atheists and representatives of other religions. The Monk Macarius does not leave without help everyone who comes to worship him with sincere faith and hope.

Canon

Song 1

Irmos: In the depths of the post, sometimes / the Pharaoh's all-army force has been transformed, / the incarnate word has consumed all-evil sin; / The glorified Lord is gloriously glorified.

The Lord, the King of Glory, glorifying him, glorified the promise, / on you, reverend, both settled, / as you glorified the Lord in your life, / the glorified Lord glorified you too.

You have assumed the great angelic image, / do not leave extreme humility in your life, / now you rejoice from the faces of the angels in Heaven. / Pray for us, Father, / with angelic praises to the Glorified Lord.

With your labors you planted it, / watered it with tears of prayer, like the garden of God, your abode, reverend. / Therefore, accept our tears of compunction / and intercessionly lift me up to the throne of the Most Glorified Lord. Theotokos: Pray to the Mother of God for us, Reverend Father, / that He may beseech His Son to have mercy on us, / May the Most Glorified Lord be glorified in His mercy.

Song 3

Irmos: Thou hast flourished like a desert, O Lord, / a pagan barren, Church / by Thy coming, / in which my heart was established.

The Zhabynsk desert has flourished / for the prayers of Your chosen one, Lord, the venerable desert dweller Macarius, / in it may we find consolation, / health and salvation through the intercession of the venerable one.

With the gift of miracles, the Lord deigns to glorify you, humble / and seemingly forgotten for many years, / so that he may give us timely help to the weak / and strengthen our weakened faith.

God-bearing Father Macarius, / You were a constant prayer book for us for God, / and you carried the Most Holy Comforter Spirit in your heart. / But fortify those who pray to you from the sleep of sin / and from the temptation of the devil.

Theotokos: Good Mother of God, pray for us / and bring our unworthy prayers to the Throne of Your Good Son, / and may the Venerable Macarius be Your prayer for us.

Sedalen, voice 4

On the firmament of the rock of faith, / laboring in silence, you ended the course of fasting with goodness / and you received reward from Christ, / to whom now you pray, O all-blessed one, / to strengthen us in faith and virtues.

Glory, even now, to the Mother of God:

You are my protection from the misfortunes of the enemy, Lady, / You are the light of my heart, / darkened by the sorrows of life, ever awaken, Mother of God, and save me.

Song 4

Irmos: You came from the Virgin, not an intercessor nor an angel, / but the Lord Himself, who became incarnate, / and you saved me as a whole man. / Thus I call to You: glory to Your power, O Lord.

You came to earth from the Most Pure Virgin to save us, O Lord, / and you glorified a great multitude of those who were saved, / so that they not only glorify You at Your Throne, / but also intercede for us. / We believe that in that bright host / our venerable father Macarius intercedes for us.

You were taken from our fatherland into the Heavenly Kingdom, Reverend Father. / Do not forget your children, God’s chosen one Macarius, / who are still coming to earth.

Be with us, our Father Macarius, / so that with you we will boldly glorify God the Father, / we will exalt the Son and worship the Holy Spirit.

Theotokos: With the Mother of God, following Her in thought, let us go into the holy place / and to Her with humility as a priest, calling in repentance: / O Savior, save us.

Song 5

Irmos: Thou art an intercessor for God and man, O Christ God: through Thee, O Lord, to Thy Father, the Master of Light, / From the night of ignorance / bringing imams.

After the night of ignorance has passed, the day of salvation is drawing near, / and the Light of the world has risen - Christ the Lord. / To this end, now, through the prayers of the Venerable Macarius, / the imams are bringing from the night of sin.

During the night the cry of the noose, / by which the Lord announced His second coming, / the Lord has come to you to receive your soul, reverend, / through prayers put mortal memory into our souls.

The night of many years has passed, / in the darkness the memory of your Father, our father, was hidden, / but this now has appeared, shining to all, / who are in your temple, / in the darkness we, drawn by faith and love, bring the imams.

Theotokos: Fear not, little flock, / for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom, says the Lord. / And this word from the Lord cannot fail, / for our shepherd has already reached the promised Kingdom, may he attract all his flock with him through the prayers of the Mother of God.

Song 6

Irmos: Lying in the abyss of sin, / I call upon the unsearchable abyss of Thy mercy: / from aphids, O God, lift me up.

May the abyss of God’s mercy overcome the abyss of our sins, / seeking nothing from us except the tears of tender repentance, / pray for this for us, O Reverend Father.

Help us, O God, to arise from the abyss of sin; through the prayers of St. Macarius, grant us permission to repent before the end / and to be partakers of Your Divine Mysteries.

We glorify Thee, Holy Trinity, / and marvel at the abyss of Thy mercy towards us, who sin many times. / But still be long-suffering for us, O our God, / until we repent with tears, / always remembering our last.

Theotokos: Let us honor the pure one / let us be ashamed in the presence of her filthy life, Reverend Father! / You then instruct us to worthily honor the Most Pure Mother of God.

Kontakion, tone 8

A pure life, patience, meekness and unfeigned love, / perfect abstinence, / Divine tenderness, / having acquired true faith and hope and mercy, / like the angels, Macarius, you lived on earth / and stood in Heaven from the faces of the Bodiless Gods. / With them, holy one, pray / to grant peace to the Russian Church / and great mercy to our souls.

Ikos

Having lived like an angel on earth, / our reverend father Macarius, come, you people, having come together, let us praise him, / saying to him: / Rejoice, you who lived heavenly on earth; Rejoice, in the flesh, even though you labored without flesh. / Rejoice, thou who has completely mortified passions and achieved dispassion; / Rejoice, having filled your soul with the gift of the Holy Spirit. / Rejoice, you who have rewarded the monastery and gathered the monks; / Rejoice, you have guided the Heavenly fence with your shepherd’s rod. / Rejoice, praise has been given to the city of Belev; / Rejoice, your desert is your unshakable affirmation. / Rejoice, ever praying to the Lord to grant peace to the Russian Church / and great mercy to our souls.

Song 7

Irmos: The ungodly command of the lawless tormentor / the flame ascended high. / Christ spread spiritual dew to the godly youth, / He is blessed and glorified.

May this blessed Christ our God deliver us from the fire of Gehenna, let us pray for this with tears of repentance. / Who will now give our eyes a source of tears, / if not you, father, who have known the bliss of crying in your life?

The lawless one raises the high flame of unbelief and wickedness. / But we will preserve the faith by sweating, / we will flee from wickedness, we will fear the flames of Gehenna, / we will be a runner to Christ and from Him and Macarius we will gain bliss.

One is the One of the Holy Trinity, Christ our God! / Create in us an abode, according to Your promise, / with Your Most Blessed and Glorified Father and with the Holy Spirit, / the Giver of life and consolation.

Theotokos: Rejoice, Lady, and give us joy, save us from troubles, / preserve the Church of Your Son in the world, and pray that He bless His inheritance.

Song 8

Irmos: Sometimes the fiery furnace in Babylon separates the action, / scorching the Chaldeans by God’s command, / showering the faithful, singing: / bless all the works of the Lord, the Lord.

In the body of an Angel, let us honor Macarius, the blessed one of the same name, and, imitating his life in Christ, / we will only strive to achieve the beatitudes of the Gospel.

The fire of sinful temptations burns me, / but water my suffering soul with the dew of Christ’s grace / and with your prayers, blessed one.

May your blessing, pleasing to God, be in the name of the Most Holy Trinity / on your monastery, and on the lands of your fatherland, / and on everyone. Those who earnestly call upon you, Reverend Father.

Theotokos: Until now and forever we bless you, all of you, Holy Mother of God, / Save us, as you gave birth to the Savior of our souls.

Song 9

Irmos: The Son, God and Lord, who is without beginning, / incarnated from the Virgin, appeared to us, / the darkened one to enlighten, the squandered brother. / Thus we magnify the All-Sung Mother of God.

With the angelic ranks praising the Lord, / and with the Theotokos, you have been vouchsafed to praise Him, / and vouchsafe us too, O Reverend Father, / that with you we may glorify the Lord and magnify the Mother of God.

Angels, seeing the entry of the Most Pure One into the Holy of Holies, were amazed. / We marvel at how in the holy temple, created by your labors in a place devastated by the barbarians, / with Her miraculous icon, the Most Pure One appears, / Even as we magnify the All-Sung Mother of God.

We will glorify God the Father, we will follow you, our God-bearing Father, / we will magnify the Divine Son, / that with Him we may also receive the Father’s sonship, / we will worship the Holy Spirit, that He will teach us to pray as we should, / and He Himself, crying out in our souls, / will strengthen us cry to God more filially: Abvo, Father!

Theotokos: Rejoice, our Joy! / Abide with us, as the Lord who is with You will also abide in us. / Gather the scattered sheep into the churchyard, / return those who have fallen away to the union, / enlighten those darkened by unbelief, / so that together we magnify Thee, the All-Singing Mother of God.
