Rituals for May 3
Lent was left behind, so there were no strong restrictions on food on this day. The people called the feast of St. Theodotus Fyodor the Nevodnik. This day, according to church traditions, was dedicated to deceased relatives.
One of the important rituals of the day was the gathering of the family at the festive table. It was important to cover it well, so that the relatives who went to the next world would see that their family was not in poverty, and would remember them. For their invisible presence at the table, you need to add several devices.
The main difference between the trip to the cemetery on May 3 and Radonitsa was that people could mourn and be sad for those who were no longer around. But on Krasnaya Gorka it is forbidden to be sad and cry for the dead.
Posts 2021
The purpose of fasting is to cleanse the soul from sinful thoughts, liberate the spirit, cultivate and strengthen humility and other Christian virtues. During fasting, you must not only refuse inappropriate food, but also keep your thoughts pure and not commit bad deeds.
Multi-day
The longest and most important fast for believers before Easter is called the Great Fast. It lasts 40 days, which is exactly how long Christ himself fasted in the desert. Fasting is defined in order to remember the torment of the Son of God before death, to repent before the bright holiday of Easter.
Lent 2021 – March 15-May 1.
Other posts from 2021:
- Petrov - from June 28 to July 11;
- Uspensky - from August 14 to 27;
- Rozhdestvensky - from November 28 to January 6.
By abstaining from food for many days, Orthodox Christians celebrate respect and love for Christ and the Mother of God. Apostolic, or Petrovsky, fast prepares believers for the celebration of the day of the holy apostles Peter and Paul.
One-day
The Orthodox Church prescribes fasting every Wednesday and Friday. Friday is the day on which the Savior accepted torment and death. On Wednesday, one of Christ’s disciples, Judas, gave Jesus up to suffer and betrayed the Teacher.
One-day posts 2021:
- Wednesday and Friday weekly (except for continuous weeks);
- Christmas Eve for Epiphany - January 18;
- Beheading of John the Baptist - September 11;
- Exaltation of the Holy Cross - September 27.
Each fast imposes certain restrictions on food consumption, but the main thing is to remember the meaning of fasting, repent and pray.
The church calendar helps Orthodox Christians prepare for important holidays and organize fasts correctly. Before the celebrations, you need to read Scripture, understand the spirit and meaning of church services, remember the events that every Christian should comprehend and honor.
Main Orthodox church holidays in May 2021
Church holidays in May 2021 will be celebrated by many believers in Russia. The main Orthodox celebrations of this month are Easter and Radonitsa. Lent ends on May 1st.
Happy Easter
For Christians, Holy Sunday in 2021 falls on May 2. Orthodox Christians prepare for the celebration 7 weeks in advance - they begin to fast. Easter itself is traditionally celebrated in church. Services in churches begin before midnight, and at 00:00 there is matins.
Interesting!
The easiest way to calculate the date of the celebration is to look at the Alexandrian Easter, an ancient calendar. However, you can independently calculate the day of the Bright Resurrection if you know that the holiday comes after the spring equinox on March 20 and after the first full moon. And, naturally, the celebration of Easter falls only on Sunday.
Colored eggs are an attribute of a festive meal, a symbol of resurrection, new life. In addition, women bake Easter for the holiday - a sweet made from cottage cheese with raisins, dried apricots or candied fruits. Easter is displayed on the table in the form of a pyramid, and is always decorated with the inscription “XV,” which means “Christ is Risen.” This is the memory of the Holy Sepulcher, from which the glow of Christ’s Resurrection rose.
Another delicacy on the festive table is Easter cake, symbolizing closeness with Christ. The entire Easter meal must be illuminated in the church before Easter Sunday during the service.
Radonitsa
In 2021, 9 parent memorial dates are celebrated in Russian churches. On the 9th day after the Great Resurrection, Radonitsa begins. 4th day of commemoration - May 11 (Fomin's Week). On this date, it is recommended to call a clergyman to your family’s grave to serve the litiya. They plan the action in advance, especially in churches where there are a large number of parishioners. It is also necessary to read a prayer for all believers on these divine dates.
On a note!
The main thing is to remember your relatives yourself and go to their cemetery. It is important to remember that “remember” means praying, not drinking alcohol.
A prayer verse about the dead on Radonitsa is read one day in the evening. At all-night evening services there is Parastas (from Greek - “intercession”) or Great Requiem. This is a consequence of prayer for all the dead who believe in God. You need to attend it in person and pray for relatives who have passed on to another world.
At a memorial service, it is allowed to write memorial notes and leave them in the church so that the clergyman can pray for the deceased relatives in the morning, during the liturgy. On Radonitsa in Russia it is customary to give alms and do any good.
All Souls Days
This is the commemoration of the dead in the spring, which occurs on the 9th day after the Great Resurrection. This date is also popularly called Easter. It is customary to remember the deceased at the grave, bring eggs and Easter cakes illuminated in the church, and eat them at the table, remembering deceased loved ones. We must try to feel joy for those who are absent from us, to rejoice at life, which has triumphed over death.
In total, the Christian faith has 8 memorial Saturdays. On these days, services are held to commemorate the dead. The calendar of church holidays for May 2021 is rolling. This means that each year Remembrance Day takes place on a different date, other than perhaps May 9th. But in general, lithiums and memorial services for those who have passed on to another world are held weekly, sometimes even daily.
Commemorations begin from the day of death. The first time is commemorated on the third day - the date of burial, burial. From the cemetery everyone goes to the deceased’s home. When there is not enough space in the apartment, the wake is organized in public catering. At dinner, it is customary to read a prayer verse for the deceased and eat the blessed kutya. They pray for the deceased several times while the funeral is taking place.
Funeral dates after burial are 9 and 40 days. The 40th day is especially important in the Christian faith, when the soul is at divine judgment. In addition, every year the deceased is remembered on the date on which he was born and on the anniversary of his death.
In Christianity, the most important aspect is prayer for the dead. Life on earth is only a transition between eternity; the soul must be prepared to meet the Lord. Since it is unknown where the soul of the deceased went, prayers for forgiveness of sinful acts on earth and granting are important.
On a note!
The Church does not allow the consumption of alcohol when praying for the souls of the dead, explaining that it will harm the soul of the deceased. Therefore, on the dates when relatives are remembered, it is correct to go to the temple and to the grave, after which they remember at a meal and pray for the soul of the deceased.
On Parents' Saturday you should go to church and pray there for the soul of the deceased. After the liturgy, visit the grave of a relative, restore order and leave flowers, light a candle and read the prayer again.
After this, all relatives can dine with prayer, without alcohol. Funerals are also held individually, such as the anniversary of a birth or death. It is recommended to read a prayer for the dead daily; this will help the souls of relatives in the other world.
Church bans on May 3
According to church prohibitions, on the day of the Calling of Ancestors, you should under no circumstances drink alcoholic beverages. Fishing is also prohibited - for fishermen this is a great sin.
On May 3, you cannot quarrel so that the deceased do not worry that something is not going well in the family during their absence. Wedding ceremonies and christenings cannot be held on this day. It is advisable not to conflict or use foul language, otherwise you may anger the souls of your ancestors.
Comments
It has been a difficult spring for all of humanity. The spread of coronavirus, as the mercy of God, can contribute to the awareness of the fragility of human civilization and encourage people to believe in God, said Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' on Sunday, April 19, after the liturgy in Peredelkino at the Church of the Holy Blessed Prince Igor of Chernigov. “We must look at this situation through the prism of spiritual knowledge and think about what it all means and why the Lord allows this plague. Here the opportunity arises to think not only about the wrath of God, as it happened in history, but, most likely, about the mercy of God,” said Patriarch Kirill. He called on believers to refrain from visiting churches during the coronavirus pandemic, but priests continue to perform services. You need to pray and remember the spiritual exploits of the saints in any case. And it doesn’t matter where you do it - at home or in the temple. Therefore, it is so important to keep in mind the calendar of Orthodox holidays for May 2020.

What should a believer do at the present moment, when the threat of covid-19 is really present? There is no ban on visiting temples. The priests continue to serve. As a last resort, you can and should find an opportunity to pray at home, especially during liturgical times: either turn on the broadcast of the service, or perform with attention, for example, 100 Jesus prayers, or read an akathist, or during the holiday period the Easter canon, or at least the creations of some holy ascetic. Take advantage of every opportunity to test and strengthen your faith with the detailed May 2021 Church Holidays Calendar.
