The Charter fully applies to the monastic practice of Palestine (see “Fast according to the Typikon”). This table reflects current parish practice, which may vary depending on local traditions. The laity determine their norm individually, preferably with the blessing of the priest.
Dates are indicated according to the new style
In the Russian Orthodox Church there are four multi-day fasts, fasts on Wednesday and Friday throughout the year (with the exception of five weeks, called continuous), and three one-day fasts.
Fasting - what is it?
This is the name of an event (religious tradition) that involves the need for periodic temporary (complete or partial) refusal of food. But fasting is more than just changing your diet. During this period, believers cleanse not only the body, but also the soul. For this purpose, spiritual and ascetic practices are used.
Under this definition
it implies initiation into the spiritual, healing of the soul, gratitude to the Lord, repentance - there are special prayers for each case.
It is also important to cleanse the soul. At the same time, a believer will strive to keep the commandments. You should not use foul language or get irritated; it is important to show tolerance towards loved ones and people around you. Moreover, it is important that asceticism be observed voluntarily - relatives should not be forced to do so. Then there will be no benefit to the soul.
Leave the post smoothly
On Easter Day, it is customary to prepare a rich feast, but after a long period of abstinence from food, you should not immediately pounce on fatty foods, alcohol, eggs and pastries - the body will receive a real shock. The following days can be very unpleasant in this case: with digestive disorders, stomach pain, drowsiness and exacerbation of chronic diseases, if any. Enter your usual diet and routine gradually and smoothly, adding your favorite foods one by one.
In conclusion, we have prepared for you an example of a three-day menu. Feel free to change your dishes and be healthy!

Multi-day Orthodox fasts in 2021
Mark 4 main Posts. Their duration is several weeks. The longest: Rozhdestvensky and Great. Both of them precede important events: the Birth of Christ and his Resurrection. Other Fasts also have weight, but do not last as long - from 2 to 3 weeks.
Lent in 2021
Lasts more than a month - begins 48 days before Easter. This is the biggest Post. Sometimes it covers February, March and April at once, but more often it covers only the first 2 months of spring. In 2021 it starts on 15.03. This period ends before the Resurrection of the Son of God.
Preparation
is carried out strictly.
Moreover, the most strict diet is on the first day - you need to limit yourself as much as possible in everything and food as well. From the second day you can eat more varied foods.
Petrov Post
The next holiday on the calendar. It runs from 28.06 to 11.07. This post begins 1 week after the end of the Trinity celebration. The total duration is less than 1 month. The peculiarity of this period is the change in diet, which depends on the day of the week. Only on July 7 (the church holiday of John the Baptist) is it permissible to eat dishes that contain fish, regardless of the day of the week.
Dormition post
This is the shortest period of asceticism, ending towards the end of summer. It lasts only 14 days. The principle of nutrition is similar to how the Petrov Fast is carried out: eating food according to the days of the week; once during the entire period of asceticism, it is allowed to introduce fish into the diet, regardless of what day of the week.
Christmas post
This period also lasts more than 1 month, spanning several months: November (starts on the 28th of 2021), ends in January (01/06). Duration is 40 days. The rules for observing asceticism are different from others. So, conventionally, this period is divided into several stages: until 19.12 (feast of the repose of St. Nicholas), until 1.01 (New Year) and immediately until 6.01.
Christmas post
November 28 – January 6, 2021
Christmas (Filippov) post
. At the end of autumn, 40 days before the great feast of the Nativity of Christ, the Church calls us to winter fasting. It is called both Filippov, because it begins after the day dedicated to the memory of the Apostle Philip, and Rozhdestvensky, because it occurs before the feast of the Nativity of Christ. This fast was established in order for us to offer a grateful sacrifice to the Lord for the collected earthly fruits and to prepare for a gracious union with the born Savior. The charter about food coincides with the charter of Peter's Fast, until the day of St. Nicholas (December 19). If the Feast of the Entry into the Temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on Wednesday or Friday, then fish is allowed. After the day of remembrance of St. Nicholas and before the forefeast of Christmas, fish is allowed on Saturday and Sunday. On the eve of the feast, you cannot eat fish on all days; on Saturday and Sunday - food with oil. On Christmas Eve you cannot eat food until the first star appears, after which it is customary to eat sochivo - wheat grains boiled in honey or boiled rice with raisins.
One-day posts in 2021
In Orthodoxy they are not so well known to unchurched people. At the same time, more stringent food restrictions are recommended. Considering that this period does not last long, it will not cause harm to the body.
Usually
it precedes the beginning of major Christian holidays.
Epiphany Christmas Eve
The date of the Fast is 18.01. As on the days of other fasts, there are recommendations for introducing various dishes into the diet. However, they must be lean. Before the holiday of Epiphany, you can eat hot dishes with added oil. Moreover, it is advisable to abstain from food until the water is blessed. This means that you need to attend a service in the Church, then bless the water. When Christmas Eve arrives, food can be eaten around noon.
Beheading of John the Baptist
Celebrated on 11.09. In this case, the meal is significantly reduced, as strict asceticism is observed. Meat, eggs, milk and even fish dishes are prohibited. It is allowed to season food with vegetable oil. Such strict restrictions are due to the fact that at 11.09 it is necessary to honor the memory of the Saint (John the Baptist), since his life and death were tragic.
Exaltation of the Holy Cross
This day is also held under strict restrictions. He must be lean. Thus, meat, fish, eggs and dairy products are prohibited by the Christian religion. The clergy say that those of the laity who do not fast will face the punishment of the Lord.
How to correctly create a Lenten menu by day to observe Lent - advice from nutritionists
Lent requires serious restrictions both in food and in the usual way of life. Of course, fasting is beneficial for the body if the menu is compiled correctly.
The key principles of Lent are: a ban on animal foods (they can be replaced with legumes, beans, nuts), an emphasis on vegetables and fruits, a minimum of spices and salt, a maximum of compotes, jelly and decoctions, small portions with a slight feeling of hunger after lunch.
For first courses - pickles, beetroot soups, vegetable soups, cereals.
For the second - vegetable salads, side dishes (porridge, potato dishes, cabbage rolls with vegetables, etc.), berries and jelly for dessert.
Approximate menu for Tuesday/Thursday of Lent
Fast days - hot dishes are allowed, vegetable oil is prohibited.
semolina porridge, base – cranberry juice + tea
For breakfast:- For lunch: lean mushroom soup (barley) + salad (beets and sauerkraut) + bread + classic cabbage stewed with rice + compote
- For dinner: boiled potatoes + olives + baked apples stuffed with nuts and honey + tea
Don’t forget the main thing: the essence of nutrition during fasting is self-restraint . Therefore, you should not get carried away with culinary delights. Overeating with meatless dishes is also not encouraged.
Fasting on Wednesday and Friday. Holidays falling on these days 2021
This is a weekly tradition. It is always observed, except on days when the day of remembrance of one of the Saints falls on Wednesday or Friday. On Wednesdays, the diet is limited in memory of ancient events - the betrayal of Judas, and on Fridays - the death of Christ on the cross.
Wherein
It is not recommended to consume meat and milk.
During the week before Christmas, one should fast even more carefully - they refuse not only meat and milk, but also fish dishes and vegetable oil.
Dormition post
August 14 – August 27, 2021
A month after the Apostolic Fast, the multi-day Dormition Fast begins. It lasts two weeks - from August 14 to 27. With this fast, the Church calls us to imitate the Mother of God, who, before her resettlement to heaven, constantly remained in fasting and prayer. Monday, Wednesday, Friday – dry eating. Tuesday, Thursday – hot food without oil. On Saturday and Sunday, food with vegetable oil is allowed. On the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord (August 19), fish is allowed. Fish day in Assumption, if it falls on Wednesday or Friday.
Question answer
If it is not possible to find reliable information about a particular holiday or the rules for observing Lent, you need to contact a priest. But sometimes this cannot be done (due to geographical location), then questions can be asked to the clergyman online.
Fasting on Wednesday and Friday: what can the laity eat?
Albina, 28 years old, Omsk: “I began to observe asceticism before major holidays, when I decided to lose weight. Then this principle of nutrition became a habit and now I want to develop further in this direction. Tell me, what’s possible on Wednesdays and Fridays?”
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“It is not a great loss for a Christian to give up certain foods. If you decide to take religious rules seriously, then I advise you to find out what is best to eat: mushrooms, fruits, berries, vegetables - everything that contains vitamins, fiber, as well as cereals (semolina, barley, buckwheat, rice, pearl barley, oatmeal). Nuts and beekeeping products are also not prohibited. They use seasonings and compotes.”
Autumn meat eater - what is it?
Varvara, 33 years old, Belgorod: “I kept putting off this moment, but now I already feel an urgent need to become closer to religion. Previously, I did not observe a single fast in a year. Easter and Trinity are ahead - everything is clear with these holidays, but I haven’t studied the autumn holidays yet. Tell me, what kind of autumn meat-eater is this, and how to observe it?”
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“This is the name for a long period when you have the right to eat meat and other previously prohibited foods (such as, for example, before the start of the Easter period). It is distinguished from the rest by other time frames: from 28.08 to 27.11. Every day the Lord gives us ordinary food. But it is important to observe fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays for the laity.”
Next Christian post?
Valeria, 34 years old, Tula:
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“It's Easter. Moreover, there are very few days left until the closest holiday. Lent will soon come to an end (May 1), so I advise you to start with the next multi-day fast - Petrov (28.06).”
How many fasts are there in Orthodoxy?
Anna, 29 years old, Tambov: “Tomorrow I want to start limiting myself in food. There is an idea to stick to different fasts over the years, but I’m not sure if I can stand it. Tell me, how often does Lent happen?”
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“A long journey awaits you - there are 4 major Lents ahead of 2021, the nutrition calendar of the Orthodox religion will help you keep track of the beginning of new ones. In addition, there are also one-day ones - there are 3 of them. There is another fast throughout the year - Wednesday and Friday, it lasts long and cyclically - throughout the year, excluding religious holidays.”
When are fast days in the week?
Inga, 43 years old, Perm: “I decided to stick to fasting. So that the children do not suffer so much from this, I first want to introduce all family members to fasting days. When do they happen?
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“For the fasting person, this is Wednesday and Friday every week. If you go further in your desire to introduce family members to the Divine, you can find out when there will be other Orthodox holidays. However, I would not recommend violating existing religious canons in order to teach a person religion. This ability will appear gradually on its own, but it will not arise if a person forcibly came to changes by fasting under pressure.”
Lent in the summer?
Irina, 39 years old, Yaroslavl: “I have already missed the period of preparation and restrictions before Easter, and when is Lent in the summer?”
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“Indeed, the period of preparation and asceticism before Easter is almost over. But in the summer there is no Lent; each of them has its own names: Uspensky, Petrov. Lent was defined as Great in the spring (pre-Easter period).”
Solid week: what can you eat?
Inna, 45 years old, Moscow: “I’m not at home now, I’m temporarily living in another country, but I adhere to the traditions of Orthodoxy (despite the fact that they are actively introducing Protestantism here). Tell me, what is allowed to be consumed during the continuous week?”
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“There are no restrictions. You can eat meat, fish and other products. Moreover, it is allowed to eat them on Wednesdays and Fridays.”
How many fasts do Orthodox Christians have?
Anna, 43 years old, Voronezh: “Help me determine how long the period of abstaining from food lasts? My husband and I have a wedding ahead, but there will be many guests representing Protestantism and Orthodoxy, we need to please everyone - to celebrate a wedding celebration when there are no restrictions on food. Thank you".
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“There are only 4 major fasts, they are long, so I still recommend getting a church calendar to determine the exact date. In addition to 4 major ones, there are 3 more one-day ones, as well as an untimely one – Wednesday and Friday.”
What does the Orthodox meal for every day consist of?
Olga, 35 years old, Vladivostok: “I want to fully understand how religious holidays are celebrated, otherwise there are a lot of surprises every year - I don’t have time to follow. In addition, it is important for me to understand for myself what is included in the meal every day.”
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“The presence or absence of restrictions and austerities during this period is taken into account. If at the moment there is no first, second week, and so on, then you can return to your usual diet.”
Fish days in Orthodoxy?
Oksana, 36 years old, Stavropol: “I love fish, but I also go to church, so I don’t want to break the Fast. When can you eat fish dishes?
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“The days of quitting this product are fleeting. They may change depending on the period of the year and Lent during each subsequent week, follow the church calendar.”
What can you eat today according to the Orthodox calendar?
Veronica, 42 years old, Novomoskovsk: “I don’t know all the canons yet, tell me what products are allowed now?”
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“Today (4.04) it is recommended to prepare hot Lenten dishes; you can add a little oil.”
What is the current post?
Inga, 33 years old, Tula: “Tell me, what is the Lent now? What is the name of?"
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“Lent is a preliminary stage, celebrated before Easter. Its main function is to prepare the souls of the laity for the moment when it is necessary for believers to draw closer to God. Not everyone will be able to survive this, so it is better to prepare your soul. You are on the right track!”
Is today a fast day or not?
Inna, 26 years old, Omsk: “I was 25 years old yesterday (it’s my birthday tonight, I’m already 26 years old!), but we’re celebrating the holiday later (due to circumstances). Until now I was not interested in religion (to be honest), but I decided to improve. I want to fast. Today, for example, is it a fast day?”
Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“Yes, now it’s Lent, Saturday is another fast day. You can safely prepare dishes without meat or eggs.”
What is Lent and how many days does it last?
Lent is a time when all Orthodox Christians must renounce carnal and spiritual excesses, exclude many foods from their diet and pray, remembering the name of Jesus Christ.
The first Christians were mostly Jews. The duration of the fast was much shorter than it is now. We fasted the day before and on Easter itself. The duration of Lent was exactly 80 hours or 3.3 days (40 hours per day, 40 per night). Believers, through prayer and repentance, remembered the suffering of Jesus and fasted for the Jews and foolish fellow tribesmen.
In the 3rd century, the fasting period was increased to 40 days. Observing strict abstinence from carnal and spiritual passions, the catechumens prepared themselves for the sacrament of baptism performed on Easter. In this regard, Lent was called “catechumen”. Subsequently, all Christians began to observe a forty-day fast together with the catechumens. The main argument for establishing a period of 40 days were the examples of Jesus, Moses and Elijah.
According to the Orthodox calendar, the duration of Lent is forty-eight days (about seven weeks). First comes Holy Pentecost, then Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday. The fast ends with the strictest Holy Week, lasting six days. The fast ends with Great Easter.
Lent can begin from February 15 to March 21, and end from April 3 to May 7, depending on Easter.
Solid weeks
This is the name for periods of 7 days long that do not require a reduction in diet. During this week it is allowed to eat fast food. This means that there are no food restrictions. However, clergy recommend controlling the amount of food consumed, since after abandoning asceticism, appetite may increase, which will lead to weight gain and deterioration of health. Moreover, gluttony is a sin.
Christmastide
The duration of this period is from 6.01 to 18.01. Meat can be cooked on all days of the week, with the exception of Wednesday and Friday.
Publican and Pharisee
Another continuous week begins 14 days before Lent. Duration: from 22.02 to 27.02. There are no food restrictions.
When this continuous week begins in Russia,
do not fast on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Cheese (Maslenitsa)
These are the last days before Lent, when it is possible to eat fast food. But meat should not be included in the diet during this period. There is no ban on other products.
Trinity
The week comes after the celebration of Trinity. This week begins on Monday. Meat is permitted for lay consumption. However, the schedule of the Fast on Wednesday and Friday is somewhat disrupted, since any food is allowed and there is no need to adhere to the fast.
Lent
The Savior Himself was led by the Spirit into the desert, was tempted by the devil for forty days and did not eat anything during these days. Great Lent is a fast in honor of the Savior Himself, and the last passionate week of this 48-day fast is established in remembrance of the last days of earthly life, the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.
Fasting is observed with particular strictness during the first, fourth (Worship of the Cross) and Holy weeks.
On the first two days of Lent, as well as on Good Friday, the Typikon orders (monks) to completely abstain from food. The rest of the time: Wednesday, Friday – dry food (water, bread, fruits, vegetables, compotes); Tuesday, Thursday – hot food without oil; Saturday, Sunday – food with vegetable oil.
Fish is allowed on the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and on Palm Sunday. Fish caviar is allowed on Lazarus Saturday. On Good Friday there is a tradition of not eating food until the shroud is taken out (usually this service ends at 15-16 hours).
Meat eaters
This is the name of the period during which there are no prohibitions on eating meat dishes. It comes after Lent. They are distinguished: spring, summer, autumn, winter.
In this case, you can eat any fast food,
not only meat, but also milk and eggs.
Winter meat eater
The duration of the period from Christmas until the beginning of the next Lent is noted. If you look at the calendar of posts 2021 for each day, then it is more accurately defined: from 7.01 to 1.03. In addition, they take a break for Epiphany and Epiphany Eve (18.01 and 19.01).
Spring meat eater
This is also a long period. It starts on Easter Day and ends before Trinity: from 2.05 in 2021 until 20.06. At the same time, Wednesday and Friday of the Fast are also in force, respectively, 2 days a week you still need to give up meat.
Summer meat eater
He separates Petrov and Uspensky Posts. In 2021, this period lasts from 12.07 to 13.08. On Wednesdays and Fridays, it is recommended to choose a more reduced diet based on dry eating.
Autumn meat eater
This is the longest period: it starts on August 28 and ends at the end of November (27th). Then the multi-day Nativity Fast begins for the Orthodox. In this case, the same nutritional scheme as in other cases is taken as a basis: on Wednesday and Friday the diet is reduced - dry eating is recommended.
Petrov post
Peter's Fast is also called the Apostolic Fast
June 28 – July 11, 2021
On Monday of the Week of All Saints, the Fast of the Holy Apostles begins, established before the Feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul. This post is called summer. The continuation of fasting varies depending on how early or late Easter occurs. It always starts on All Saints Monday and ends on July 12th.

Expert opinion
Father Innocent
“A long journey awaits you - there are 4 major Lents ahead of 2021, the nutrition calendar of the Orthodox religion will help you keep track of the beginning of new ones.

Thank you".
