Orthodox church wedding calendar for 2021: favorable days, beautiful dates for weddings in 2021, signs for weddings

Wedding ceremony, rules of the Orthodox ceremony

  • Wedding has very deep roots in ancient times. In addition to a beautiful ceremony, this is a rather interesting process that has a special meaning. A wedding unites a man and a woman in a divine union of lovers. It is a sacrament that elevates marriage into spiritual existence.
  • It is not uncommon for a wedding ceremony to be included in the marriage process itself for entertainment and to create an interesting holiday, which is a wrong step. A wedding should be a conscious and voluntary step for those who believe in the eternity of their feelings and marriage in life and “in heaven.”
  • Some Orthodox churches insist that a wedding should occur only once in a person’s life, others - no more than three. However, you will rarely be able to find priests who will agree to perform the ceremony again for you with another person.
  • The wedding ceremony is performed only on baptized young people wearing an Orthodox cross. Age also matters, because men under eighteen and women under sixteen are not allowed to attend weddings.
  • It is strictly forbidden for people of any other religion to attend the wedding ceremony, since this is only an Orthodox sacrament.
  • A wedding is impossible if the couple in love has any family ties, even if they are quite distant. Weddings between godchildren and godparents are unacceptable.
  • A wedding is prohibited if one of the young people has an affair on the side. But the bride’s “interesting position” is not a limitation, just like the lack of parents’ blessing for marriage.

wedding ceremony in the Orthodox Church

A wedding requires careful preparation, which necessarily includes planning the date of the ceremony.

Who can be refused

  1. Lovers who have decided to take such an important step in their lives - to enter into a union before God, must take into account one key point: they must be married. If you are not officially registered with the registry office, most likely the bishop will refuse you.
  2. People who have not been baptized , in most cases, want to get married only because of fashion, so they should not hope for the priest’s leniency. But if he still sees sincerity in such a couple, then first he will need to be baptized.
  3. Also, the ritual is prohibited for adherents of another religion, sect or faith . This even applies to one of the spouses.
  4. It is quite possible that they will refuse if you already have three divorces at this point. And even more so if you are married to one person and want to get married to another.
  5. The Church is against unions of both blood relatives with each other, for example, brother and sister, and spiritual ones - between a godson and his godmother or father, as well as godfathers.
  6. There are also age . Most likely, the priest will be against the ritual for a young boy or girl who has not yet reached the age of 18. This also applies to older people: men over 70 years old and women over 60.
  7. People who have taken a vow of celibacy and clergy will also be denied the service in question.

And remember that the miracle of the Sacrament of Wedding will only happen if your intentions are sincere, and you agree to change for the sake of your family throughout your life and make compromises. Then God will help you, and your marriage will become truly happy, and faith will help preserve light and love in your soul for many years.

Strict fasting in 2021: dates

A wedding can be held on almost any day of the year, but there are certain “acute” dates that relate to strict fasting:

  • Lent ( , 2021 ) is the most important fast for the church
  • Petrov fast ( from June 28 to July 11, 2021 ) - an important post
  • Dormition Fast ( from August 14 to August 27, 2021 ) - summer church fast
  • The Nativity Fast ( from November 28, 2021 to January 6, 2022 ) is one of the most important.

The meaning of the sacrament

For true believers, a wedding is the most important family holiday, thanks to which lovers got married not only on earth, but also in heaven. Priests recommend holding the ceremony a year after a regular wedding to give the newlyweds time to check their feelings again.

Before choosing a day, it is better to visit the chosen church and talk with the clergyman. He will tell you which dates you should pay attention to.

Allowed days

If you count, then in 2021 there will be only 124 good days to perform the ritual. The days of the week are Friday, Monday and Wednesday.

If you look at the calendar, you can see that:

  1. In January, the ceremony is possible on all Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays after the 19th. They also celebrate the 19th and 26th days of the month.
  2. In February, only the last week, the 14th and 23rd, falls.
  3. There are no good days at all in March.
  4. April gives only three days: the 26th, 27th and 29th.
  5. May is rich in dates. Every Monday, Friday, and Wednesday you can get married, except for the 27th day.
  6. June allows the ceremony to be held until the 14th.
  7. In July, church weddings are allowed from 12 noon.
  8. In August the days fall from the 13th to the 27th.
  9. September allows all days except the 11th, 20th and 27th.
  10. October – all dates.
  11. November - except for the 29th and 30th.
  12. You can't get married in December.

Some couples rely on the lunar calendar. This is incorrect because the church does not recognize this data, although some dates match.

When ceremony is prohibited

Most days of the year are not designated for the sacrament. So, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday fall every week. There are also church holidays and fasts on which the ceremony is not carried out:

  • Christmastide continues from January 7 to January 17;
  • from February 24 to the end of the month, including March 1, as Maslenitsa is celebrated;
  • from April 19 to April 25 during the week of Bright Week;
  • a few days before Lent;
  • before Palm Sunday and Christmas Eve;
  • The 11th and 27th of the ninth month are days of one-day fasting;
  • in the days preceding holidays in a particular temple. You need to find out about such days in advance from the priest;
  • on the main church holidays: Trinity Day, Christmas, Presentation of the Lord, Epiphany;
  • 11 – 07.01 in Nativity Fast, August 14-28 in Assumption Fast and 15.06 – 12.07 in Petrov Fast.

There are exceptions to any rule. If lovers have a good reason to get married on one of the forbidden days, then the church minister can make concessions.

When to have a wedding and when not to: church rules

There are some beliefs that say when it is worth getting married and when not. It is customary to hold wedding ceremonies on such days of the week as:

  • Monday
  • Wednesday
  • Friday
  • Sunday

You should avoid getting married on any day of the week 13th ! The Orthodox Church considers the number 13 to be from the Devil and does not recommend getting married on this date.

Wedding ceremony according to Orthodox customs
It is worth noting that there are also days that are considered prosperous for the wedding ceremony. This:

  • autumn time after Intercession
  • winter time from Epiphany to Maslenitsa
  • summer time between the Petrov fast and the Uspensky fast
  • in the spring to celebrate Krasnaya Gorka

Many couples want to organize a wedding on their wedding day, but the priests strongly discourage them from doing so. They recommend that the couple perform the ceremony a year later in order to accurately verify the sincerity of their feelings.

It is best not to rush into a wedding, because it is never too late to carry it out and neither children nor age are a hindrance.

When is it possible to perform the Sacrament?

Orthodox Christians will be able to get married on one of the 123 permitted days in the coming year. This is exactly how many dates remained free from fasting and various religious festivals.

As for the days of the week, the most successful are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The rest, in most cases, are forbidden.

Sunday is the most popular among couples, so book it in advance.

It is also worth considering that churches often hold services and holidays, so you need to visit the church you have chosen for the ceremony as early as possible and agree with the priest on the date you need.

Orthodox church wedding calendar for 2021

The wedding day is the most important date for a true believer. Perhaps someone will consider it unnecessary or invalid. All these are the prejudices of atheists, and more and more often young people seek to tie the knot in the Orthodox Church.

There is a belief that harmony, love and happiness come to a family whose union has been approved by God. It is worth preparing in advance in order to choose a suitable date in 2021 that is not prohibited by the church and does not have any negative influences.

The wedding ceremony must be planned in advance

The church calendar, which marks both favorable and unfavorable days, will help you decide on the wedding date.

Who can't get married?

It happens that lovers have chosen a suitable date, having checked the Orthodox calendar, fulfilled all the conditions, but the clergyman still refuses the wedding. This happens if certain circumstances become clear:

  1. Young people did not tie the knot at the state level.
  2. The lovers are atheists, and the wedding is perceived only as a beautiful ceremony.
  3. If one of the newlyweds does not profess Orthodoxy, but belongs to another faith. Sectarians are also not allowed to participate in the ceremony.
  4. Civil cohabitation is a significant reason for refusal.
  5. If it turns out that one of the lovers has already been married three times.
  6. Age limit. Young people who have not reached the age of majority cannot get married. The ban also applies to men over 70 years of age and women over 60 years of age.
  7. Relatives by blood and spiritual friends (for example, godparents of one child) will be categorically denied the ritual.
  8. People who have taken a vow of celibacy and priests cannot undergo a wedding.

A wedding is not a beautiful and fashionable event, but a serious ceremony that unites the destinies of people. Therefore, it is necessary to approach the ceremony responsibly and choose the right date using a special calendar.

When is it impossible to conduct a wedding ceremony according to the Orthodox calendar?

You should know for sure that not all dates are favorable for a wedding. So, it is worth remembering that Tuesday and Thursday are unfavorable days in any week only because they precede fast days.

It is not advisable to choose Saturday , although this is not strictly persecuted. Saturday precedes Sunday - a holiday and a day off for everyone.

The wedding must take place in accordance with the church calendar

Weddings are strictly prohibited on the days of great Orthodox holidays . It is believed that a true believer should devote this day to God, and not to his personal joys.

unfavorable days for weddings should be avoided

Avoid fasting, holidays, and weeks. Not only holidays, but also their eves should be avoided. You should not plan a ceremony on the personal day of the saint to whose name the church is dedicated.

Is it possible to get married during Lent?

This is a question many married couples ask. To know which days you can get married, it’s easier to keep in mind when you can’t do this. So, it will not be possible to perform the sacrament during the Great Fast (February 19 - April 7), Petrov (June 4 - July 11), Uspensky (August 14 - 27) and Rozhdestvensky (November 28 - January 6). In addition, in accordance with the peculiarities of weddings in the Orthodox Church, couples will not be able to do this in:

  1. Twelfth permanent holidays. In 2021, these will be the Nativity of Christ (January 7), Epiphany (January 19), Presentation of the Lord (February 15), Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (April 7), Transfiguration of the Lord (August 19), Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 28), Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Theotokos (September 21), Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 27), Entry into the Temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary (December 4).
  2. Twelfth moving holidays. Easter (April 8), Palm Sunday (April 1), Ascension of the Lord (May 17), Trinity Day (May 27).
  3. Great holidays. These are the Circumcision of the Lord (January 14), the Nativity of John the Baptist (July 7), the Day of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul (July 12), the Beheading of John the Baptist (September 11), the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos (October 14).
  4. In the weeks of continuous Weeks. In 2021 there are five of them: Christmastide (January 7 - 18), The Publican and the Pharisee (January 29 - February 3), Cheese (February 12 - 17), Svetlaya (April 9 - 14), Trinity (May 28 - June 2).

Also, in the church they do not marry on the eve of temple holidays, which parishes establish depending on their own needs. Moreover, the list of what is necessary for a wedding is the same, regardless of the place where the sacrament is performed.

It is believed that during such days people need to observe abstinence, both in thoughts and behavior. Therefore, according to church tradition, a wedding during Lent is prohibited, because it can then turn into a feast and violation of chastity.

The best auspicious days for a wedding in 2021

Of course, with such a strict restriction, it is difficult to choose the most suitable day for a wedding, but it is quite possible. Most couples prefer to get married on a day off: Saturday or Sunday. They don't know that the best days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The best date for a wedding ceremony is Krasnaya Gorka ( May 9, 2021 ). This day comes precisely on Sunday, the first Sunday after Easter.

The right date will play its due role and can make your marriage prosperous, both on earth and in heaven.

Wedding on the wedding day, is it possible to schedule the ceremony on the wedding day?

The answer to this question lies in how devoted the couple is to God. The modern wedding ceremony is perceived by lovers as a beautiful continuation of the painting in the registry office.

That’s why they plan it on the same day, so you can easily avoid unnecessary expenses for setting the table and congratulating. However, this event has a completely different meaning - a great one.

  • A wedding should happen once in a lifetime and unite lovers forever: once and forever. That is why priests advise holding the ceremony on the silver wedding anniversary or at least a few years later. After all, nothing can destroy this marriage before God. Even if a couple's marriage is difficult and married, one must endure all the trials.
  • God said: “The two will become one flesh,” and it is from these words that one should start if two people decide to marry. This decision must be fully conscious and desirable for both men and women. By getting married, lovers literally become one in the eyes of God and society.
  • Much depends on how you perceive God: whether you believe in Him, whether you love Him, whether you honor the faith. In any case, it doesn’t matter when you decide the date, the important thing is that your decision will be voluntary from the bottom of your loving heart!

Rules for preparing for the ritual

A wedding is the highest level of marriage, when lovers want to seal their love not only before people, but also before God.

Church wedding - a beautiful tradition or spiritual unity

Therefore, you should carefully prepare for the ceremony:

  1. As practice shows, priests agree to marry only those couples who have previously entered into a marriage at the registry office. This is how lovers prove that their decision is thoughtful and balanced.
  2. Newlyweds are recommended to familiarize themselves with Orthodox works that reveal details of the lifestyle of a Christian family.
  3. A man and woman should come to the ceremony with a light heart, full of love and respect for their spouse. It is advisable to resolve all disputes and disagreements in a couple.
  4. It is necessary that the husband and wife be baptized people. But only one spouse is allowed to be baptized.
  5. On the day before the wedding, you should meet with the priest for confession and communion.

For the ceremony itself you will need wedding rings, a towel, candles and white scarves for them, wine and icons of the Mother of God and Jesus Christ. The list may vary depending on the temple chosen for the wedding.

Responsibilities of witnesses

The tradition of inviting witnesses to a wedding has deep roots. At a time when marriages were registered only in the parish register, the priest needed proof of the seriousness of the lovers’ intentions. The parishioners of the temple, who knew the young people well, confirmed the sincerity of the feelings of the guy and girl. Only then did the clergyman agree to marry the couple.

Currently, it is possible to conduct the ceremony without witnesses if no suitable candidates are found. You cannot take as witnesses the parents of one of the lovers, a divorced boyfriend/girlfriend, or people living in a civil marriage. But you can take as witnesses a married couple who are happy in a legal relationship. It is also necessary to choose a baptized person who understands the importance of the ritual.

Witnesses have few responsibilities. They need to present the wedding rings at the right moment and hold the crowns over the heads of the couple for almost the entire ceremony. This is a difficult task because the crowns are heavy and the wedding takes a long time.

Dress code for newlyweds

Church is one of the few places where you must strictly follow the generally accepted rules of the church dress code. The newlyweds' clothes should symbolize the purity of their thoughts and souls.

When choosing an outfit for the groom, it is better to opt for strict business suits in calm shades. Sets of clothes in blue, black, gray, or coffee tones would be appropriate. Bright and flashy costumes with patterns, embroidery, and inscriptions should be left for other occasions, since the church calls on people to show restraint and modesty, and weddings are not social events.

You also cannot replace trousers with jeans, a shirt with a T-shirt, and shoes with sneakers. As for accessories, you can leave a discreet watch.

There are several wishes for the bride's appearance:

  1. Girls are recommended to choose dresses in light colors, since white is not necessary. It is advisable to give preference to floor-length models, with ¾ sleeves and covered shoulders. For example, wedding dresses with lace tops look great in church. But as practice shows, girls choose corset models, and at the ceremony they cover their shoulders with a veil.
  2. It should be remembered that women should not be in church with their heads uncovered, so the bride should choose a veil that hides her hair as much as possible, or a beautiful scarf. Guests present may wear hats.
  3. It is also worth taking care of comfortable shoes, as you will have to stand for a long time.
  4. It is necessary to remove any jewelry from your hands.
  5. Give preference to daytime makeup, since war paint looks out of place within the walls of a church. It’s better to leave your lips completely untouched, since you have to kiss icons.

Dress code rules are mandatory for all wedding guests. But they are simple and should not cause difficulties for lovers.

Folk signs for a wedding day

There are certain signs that, along with observing church dates, favor marriage in a church:

  • A wedding held in the last month of summer will bring understanding, harmony and a long union to the spouses.
  • A wedding May 22 , the day of St. Nicholas the Great, favors a long and strong union full of love.
  • A wedding in September and November will bring a long and understanding, strong union.
  • It is good to get married on the day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God ( July 21 and November 4 ). July 21, 2021 is the wedding day.
  • Good wedding on the day of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God ( February 25 in 2021 )

Favorable dates

According to clergy, the best days for a church marriage are some Orthodox holidays, such as:

  • Red Hill is the first Sunday after Easter (Christmas). This year it is on May 9 ;
  • days of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. They are celebrated in the fall - on the fourth of November (11/4/21 falls on Thursday, therefore, there will be no weddings on this day) and in the summer - on July 21 ;
  • Memorial Day of the Evangelist Mark - May 8th (05/08/21 falls on Saturday, so you will not be married on this day);
  • spring day dedicated to St. Nicholas - May 22 (this year this date also falls on Saturday, which means the ceremony will not be performed);
  • one of the three days of memory of the Iveron Mother of God icon is October 26 (and this auspicious day falls on Tuesday in 2021, and therefore the Sacrament will be impossible).
