40-day reading of the akathist - why 40 days
This figure is not designated by chance. The number 40 is associated in Orthodoxy with the perfection and fullness of the soul. Taking the Bible in hand, everyone will understand that the number occurs very often. For example, the Great Flow lasted 40 days and nights, Moses was on Mount Sinai for exactly 40 days,
David and Solomon reigned for 40 years. There is nothing accidental in prayer. According to the New Testament, Jesus Christ spent exactly forty days in the desert before preaching. To the question why the akathist to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is read for 40 days, the answer has been given.
Origin story
Akathist to Nicholas means a hymn praising the saint. The genre itself was created in Byzantium. The first akathist praised the Mother of God, then hymns of praise were created for various saints.
The further development of the akathist genre is associated with the names of the Patriarchs of Constantinople Isidore I Vouhiras (1341-1349) and Philotheus Kokkin (1353-1354). Based on the first chants, Patriarch Isidore created the final version of the hymn to Nicholas the Wonderworker. The compositional structure is interesting. So, the structure includes:
- beginning (cuculium);
- 12 large stanzas;
- 12 small stanzas.
The stanzas are called ikos. The short ones are called kontakia (ending with the words “Hallelujah”). Long ones contain heretisms (greetings – “rejoice”). If you look at the akathist to the Wonderworker, you can see all the components.

Nicholas the Wonderworker - Saint for people
This is the patron saint of those who travel and are on the road far from home, the protector of orphans, children and all prisoners. Nikolai Ugodnik, during his life and after death, always saw the meaning of the world in believing and serving the Lord God. People in trouble, who need God's help, the weak and defenseless, could always turn to the Saint in prayer.
Even during his lifetime, Nikolai was recognized as a very merciful, kind and wonderful person. He is considered as such to this day, since he helps believers with any prayer to him.
Many people often talked with Nicholas, consoled themselves, not knowing what the image of the Wonderworker looked like on the icon. And upon arriving at the church, they were surprised that they imagined the very person whose image is depicted on the icon. This is not just a miracle, but a real communication between Nicholas and those who believe in him.
Common Mistakes
Among the mistakes in reading the akathist:
- lack of faith in the healing power of prayer;
- ignorance of the life of Nicholas the Ugodnik;
- requests that negatively affect other people.
Believers say that other mistakes are unimportant if a person turns to the saint with an open heart and a pure soul.
Thus, the Pleasant is the “elder” of all saints. There is probably no other saint who has such a number of worshipers. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the name Nikolai was the most common. At that time, Nikola was divided into winter and summer. During the winter they indulged in fun, and during the summer they persistently prayed for rain and harvest.
Great miracles of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

Once Saint Nicholas, while still alive, resurrected a sailor who had fallen and crashed to death from a high mast. After a while, the lifeless body showed signs of life. The Lord God entrusted Nicholas the Wonderworker with a divine mission for the whole sinful world - to become an associate and love all people in this world: evil and good, greedy and generous.
A lot can be said about the exploits of Nicholas, because until his death the Saint always helped people and supported them. The Holy Pleasant instilled in the people faith in the best, fought against paganism, and never made a mistake in choosing the right and worthy path. Nikolai lived a very long, interesting and long life, and after the death of the Pleasant, the body remained incorrupt.
In Italy, in the city of Bari, you can see the relics of Nicholas, which have survived to this day. The most important and unforgettable miracle, which believers often observe and are constantly surprised by this phenomenon, is the myrrh-streaming icons of Nicholas.
In any church you can notice this amazing and strange phenomenon, even though the icons can be painted on different surfaces with any paints. Oily stains of incredible fragrance appear on all holy images. Many claim that this is how Nikolai Ugodnik communicates with those who came to him to pray and ask for help. Not a single scientist has yet been able to explain this fact, but the fact that this is a miracle is indisputable.
After his death, Nikolai Ugodnik became one of the most revered saints in the world
Nicholas died quietly in 342, but did not give up caring for people and miracles. His relics exude myrrh, and the saint responded to prayers.
That is why the akathist to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is so popular. And the elder himself is respected even in other religions, for example, among Muslims.
342
year of death of Nikolai Ugodnik
In Russia, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is especially loved. He is often singled out as superior to the saints. It happened that the saint was even recorded in the Trinity, displacing God the Father from there.
But now such views are not voiced in Orthodoxy.
People often turn to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker with various requests and life problems.
In this video, a woman tells how an akathist to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker helped her son find a good job and solve health problems:
