Troparia and kontakia are short hymns that tell about important episodes in the life of a saint. Nicholas the Wonderworker was born in Patara, in a country called Lycian. Nikolai's uncle noticed early on that his nephew was striving with all his heart to serve God.
During his ordination as a priest, Nicholas addressed the people in the church, saying that only those who would be under his protection would find happiness. He will have to save many souls, heal illnesses and help those in need. And Nikolai truly dedicated his future life to helping people. He constantly prayed, performed church duties, and amazed those around him with the purity of his soul. Nikolai even gave away all his property, which had not the slightest value to him.
During one of his prayers, Nicholas heard a voice from Heaven calling him to go to the city of Myra, the metropolis of Lycia. This is what the future saint did. In Mir, Nikolai became an old man who did not have his own home.
At this time, the archbishop died in Myra. It was impossible to find a new worthy person to take his place. And then it was decided to ask God for help. It is very important to understand the difference between petition and thanksgiving to the saints and to God Himself.
Even the most powerful saints perform their miracles and provide help only by God's will. Therefore, we more often turn to God with general “global” requests that are not related to specific circumstances. And we choose a saint for a specific request: to pass an exam, cure an illness, keep us safe on the road, help with an everyday issue.
Useful materials
And gratitude is also different. We thank the saint for the specific help we asked for. But we thank God for everything, including severe trials and tribulations. The main prayer to Him is: “Glory to God for everything!”
So, how can we thank St. Nicholas for the benefit he has shown?
There are several different ways:
• A short prayer in your own words “on the go.”
• Home prayer with an evening or morning rule.
• Reading the akathist at home.
• A request to the priest to serve a thanksgiving prayer service in the church.
Moreover, all these methods can be combined without being limited to just one. The prayer book contains 3 prayers of thanks to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. It is necessary to familiarize yourself with the content of prayer requests and make an actual choice. Why is a prayer of thanksgiving needed?
Nicholas the Wonderworker in the heavenly hierarchy of holy saints is in first place in importance and veneration among Russian Orthodox believers.
