Troparion and Kontakion to St. Nicholas Archbishop Peace to the Lycian Wonderworker

Troparia and kontakia are short hymns that tell about important episodes in the life of a saint. Nicholas the Wonderworker was born in Patara, in a country called Lycian. Nikolai's uncle noticed early on that his nephew was striving with all his heart to serve God.

During his ordination as a priest, Nicholas addressed the people in the church, saying that only those who would be under his protection would find happiness. He will have to save many souls, heal illnesses and help those in need. And Nikolai truly dedicated his future life to helping people. He constantly prayed, performed church duties, and amazed those around him with the purity of his soul. Nikolai even gave away all his property, which had not the slightest value to him.

During one of his prayers, Nicholas heard a voice from Heaven calling him to go to the city of Myra, the metropolis of Lycia. This is what the future saint did. In Mir, Nikolai became an old man who did not have his own home.

At this time, the archbishop died in Myra. It was impossible to find a new worthy person to take his place. And then it was decided to ask God for help. During prayer, the church servants saw a bright image in front of them, calling to follow who would be the first to cross the threshold of the temple in the morning. It is he who should become the bishop. In the morning, Nicholas entered the church, becoming an archbishop and until the end of his life, he set an example for the laity of a life pleasing to God.

Kontakia and troparia are sung in churches on certain days associated with the life of the saint. However, you can read them at home. You must first take a blessing from the priest. He will explain how to pronounce the right words correctly and when to do it.

Prayer to Nicholas the Wonderworker for help in work

“Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Good One, our souls. Bless, Lord, and help me, a sinner, to complete the work I have begun, for Your glory. My Lord, Lord, with faith in my soul and heart spoken by You, I fall down in Your goodness: help me, a sinner, to complete this work, which I have begun, in You, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, through the prayers of the Mother of God and all Your saints . It is important not to forget about gratitude to God and the saints

Gratitude for help is very important. Here is what we read about this in the spiritual treasury of the Holy Fathers:

The Apostle testifies that thanksgiving is commanded by God Himself (St. Ignatius Brianchaninov).

...How will one ask for the future who does not know how to give thanks for the past (St. John Chrysostom)?

Let us always thank the Lord, so that we may be worthy to receive His eternal blessings... (St. Basil the Great).

It is very important to understand the difference between petition and thanksgiving to the saints and to God Himself.

Even the most powerful saints perform their miracles and provide help only by God's will. Therefore, we more often turn to God with general “global” requests that are not related to specific circumstances. And we choose a saint for a specific request: to pass an exam, cure an illness, keep us safe on the road, help with an everyday issue.

Useful materials

And gratitude is also different. We thank the saint for the specific help we asked for. But we thank God for everything, including severe trials and tribulations. The main prayer to Him is: “Glory to God for everything!”

So, how can we thank St. Nicholas for the benefit he has shown?

There are several different ways:

• A short prayer in your own words “on the go.”

• Home prayer with an evening or morning rule.

• Reading the akathist at home.

• A request to the priest to serve a thanksgiving prayer service in the church.

Moreover, all these methods can be combined without being limited to just one. Having received help, if you are in a crowded place, you can simply say a short thank you to yourself in your own words, coming from the heart. In the evening or morning, you can add a few prayers to St. Nicholas to the usual rule, and, if possible, read an akathist. And, the best thing is, next Sunday, order a thanksgiving prayer service to the priest at church, and be sure to pray with him.

On our own we are weak and powerless. As the opening prayer says:

“Thou hast declared with Thy most pure lips, that without Me thou canst do nothing.”

Let's not forget to thank God and his saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. Amen.

Strive, servant of God, do not leave us in the captivity of sin, so that we may not joyfully be our enemy and die in our evil deeds. Pray for us unworthy of our Creator and Master, to whom you stand with the disembodied faces: make our God merciful to us in this life and in the future, so that He will not reward us according to our deeds and the impurity of our hearts, but according to His goodness He will reward us.

We trust in your intercession, we boast of your intercession, we call upon your intercession for help and we ask for help in your most holy image: deliver us, saint of Christ, from the evils that come upon us, so that for the sake of your holy prayers the attack will not overwhelm us and we will not wallow in the abyss more sinful and in the mud of our passions.

Pray to Saint Nicholas of Christ, Christ our God, that he may grant us a peaceful life and remission of sins, salvation and great mercy for our souls, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen"

Protect and preserve our country, and every country existing in Orthodoxy, with your holy prayers from worldly rebellion, the sword, the invasion of foreigners, from internecine and bloody warfare. And just as you had mercy on three men imprisoned, and you delivered them from the king’s wrath and the beating of the sword, so have mercy and delivered the Orthodox people of Great, Little and White Rus' from the destructive heresy of the Latin.

For through your intercession and help, and through His mercy and grace, may Christ God look with His merciful eye on people who exist in ignorance, even though they have not known their right hand, especially young people, by whom the Latin seductions are spoken to turn away from the Orthodox faith, may he enlighten the minds of His people, may they not be tempted and fall away from the faith of their fathers, may their conscience, lulled by vain wisdom and ignorance, awaken and turn their will to the preservation of the holy Orthodox faith, may they remember the faith and humility of our fathers, may their life be for the Orthodox faith who have laid down and accepted the warm prayers of His holy saints, who have shone in our land, keeping us from the delusion and heresy of the Latin, so that, having preserved us in holy Orthodoxy, He will grant us at His terrible Judgment to stand on the right hand with all the saints. Amen"
