Ostrobramskaya icon: what it helps with, the meaning of the icon

This icon is quite rare on sale, but strong in its symbolism. The Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God should be in the home of every Orthodox person. And in order for it to protect the home from all evil, witchcraft and crafty people, it must be placed at the entrance to the house. Most often you can see this icon right above the front door of the house. She looks into the room, not out of it. When a person comes in, she seems to follow his gaze into the house and stay strictly above his head.

The history of the divine image and its miraculous properties

There are two known, but different versions of how this holy image appeared. As was described in one of the legends, the face of the Virgin Mary appeared in 1431 on April 27 in the city of Vilna on the “sharp gate”. This is where the name of the image comes from. This Divine face is distinguished not only by its rich attire, but also by its incredible beauty.

However, based on another legend, the Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God was received as a gift, in honor of the adoption of Christianity from the Emperor of Greece to the prince. There is also another legend, according to which the icon miraculously appeared above the gate.

The image of the Mother of God itself is considered very rare, because it depicts only the Mother of God without the baby. The Saint herself is with her arms crossed and her head tilted down. Christian believers believe that this imprinted gesture indicates acceptance of the Holy Message. But on the head of the Mother of God there is a halo with long rays and stars, a crown, and at the bottom of the image there is a silver crescent.

When is Divine Image Day celebrated?

Catholics organize a solemn procession every year on April 14; and Orthodox people organize a celebration every year on December 26.

Miraculous power

In 1711, there was a fire in Vilnius, and the local chapel burned to the ground, but the icon of the Virgin Mary was not damaged. Today in the Vilnius chapel they say: “When people pray next to the image of the Virgin Mary, even the birds stop singing.”

Numerous thanks to the Mother of God are the best confirmation of her divine power. She protects from any evil.

There are several more miracles in the history of the icon:

  • 1671 - the child was cured of a serious illness;
  • 1681 - during a service, a gate fell on people in the chapel, but no one was injured;
  • 1830 - documentation of the cure of two paralyzed men;
  • 1900 - three mentally ill people were cured.

In 1927, in Poland, a two-tiered crown was attached above Mary's head. Now it is one of the richest and most beautiful shrines. The ceremony was accompanied by heavy rain.

It was attended by all Polish clergy and senior officials of the state. In 1928, the icon was placed in a metal container to protect it from natural disasters and theft.

An irreplaceable assistant

The main question that believers are looking for an answer to is: what does the icon of the Most Holy Mother of God help with, what troubles does it protect from? Turn to this icon if:

They want to protect themselves from the evil eye, gossip, sudden death, and various problems. They want to achieve harmony in the home, calm the atmosphere and normalize the energy of the home. They strive to protect spouses from interference by third parties and help the couple maintain love for many years. We intend to rid our home of unwanted guests, as well as of any visitors who could cause harm to the family and its habitat. They want to get rid of a curse or some other negativity up to the seventh generation. They strive to help their loved ones with depression, mental illness and other mental problems. They need to calm down an anxious baby and want to instill joy in the soul of a little person.

The icon of the Ostrobramskaya Mother of God will also help expectant mothers safely bear and give birth to children. The meaning of the image of the Mother of God for pregnant women is protection and patronage during this difficult and responsible period. The icon is especially valued by those couples who despair of having children due to problems with pregnancy and childbirth.

What it protects from and how to pray

The icon is sacredly revered by all Christians. Catholics established the celebration of the Ostrobramsky image on April 14, Orthodox Christians celebrate this day on December 26.

Regardless of the form of confession, believers of any denomination know that the Bright Face protects:

  • From various diseases and unnecessary death,
  • From bad thoughts, gossip, slander and harmful surroundings.
  • From evil spirits, witchcraft, curses, conspiracies, damage.

Protects home and family from theft or robbery. Does not allow people with reckless thoughts and intentions to penetrate. Provides peace, tranquility, prosperity and harmony to the family.

People turn to the icon with a prayer for the health of relatives and friends, for the cure of patients from serious illnesses.

Also, the most difficult life problems that do not depend on a person are solved by diligent prayers.

Believers turn to the Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God with the words of prayer:

“O most holy Lady, my Lady, Mother of God, Heavenly Queen!

Save and have mercy on us, your sinful servants (names) from vain slander, from all kinds of troubles and misfortunes, evil and crafty people and arrogant deaths.

Protect us, Lady Theotokos, from all our enemies, visible and invisible, from the fierce slander of the enemy and from all evil circumstances. Amen".

“To the chosen Voivode and wonderful Intercessor of the Christian race, who deigned to pour out streams of grace-filled healings from Her holy icon, let us sing praises to Thy servants, the Mother of God. But You, as the good Intercessor of those who honor Thee, free us from all troubles, so we call Thee: Rejoice, Lady, showing grace and mercy to us through Your Ostrobramskaya icon.”

Women who want to conceive, bear and give birth to a healthy child read the following prayer in front of the image:

"Blessed Virgin Mary,

do not turn Your face away from me, a sinful servant of God, and accept this prayer to You, offered with all my heart, preserve the fruit of my womb and safely give birth (to give birth) at the right time (due) by Your great and ineffable mercy.”

How does the Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God help?

When adherents of the Catholic and Orthodox faiths who come here, when they approach the gates, out of respect they remove their hats in order to pay homage to the holy image, immortalized and preserved over the centuries. There they place candles that burn throughout the year, and crowds of people hope to look at the miracle, touch it and feel the influence of the Almighty through the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos of Ostrobramskaya on their lives. From the miraculous shrine comes inexhaustible energy that cannot be resisted.

This icon is a rare example in which the Virgin appears without a baby. Depicted from the waist up, she bowed her head and crossed her arms over her chest. On her head is a crown consisting of two tiers, the sharp rays of which become the base of a halo located above her head. Dressed in a silver robe, she thought about the world.

The rarity of the image gives it special strength and power, incomparable with other holy images and icons

Many people use replicas and lists from this image, because the Ostrobramskaya icon helps to provide the house with protection from external influences and spirits that are hostile towards members of the house. The icon is asked for protection, the opportunity to save the family and protect it from the interference of external circumstances. The Ostrobramskaya icon is also hung or kept at home to ensure strong love between spouses. It is generally accepted that it can help get rid of melancholy and despondency. Others who prayed at the icon noted that a solution to tormenting problems was quickly found, and sometimes they were solved independently without outside interference, as if by decision of a powerful force.

Where to hang the Seven-Shot Icon of the Mother of God

How to hang an icon so that it not only pleases the eye, but also helps protect household members and fill the house with peace and love? The question of choosing a place, how and where to store an icon is not accidental: incorrectly placed icons can give a completely opposite effect.

Previously, the red corner served as a place for icons - a specially designated place for prayer. This method is not the only one; it is enough to follow just a few rules:

  • all icons must be kept in one place and not mixed with photographs and paintings;
  • icons should stand apart, since the place where they will stand is intended for prayer, that is, living communication with the Divine world. Through the prayer of the Mother of God, the Lord hears our requests most quickly, since she is the very first intercessor before us. The proximity of icons to other objects, even very dear and important to us, is not allowed;
  • You cannot put icons on shelves with books, on the TV, or hang them next to paintings. Arranged or hung in this way, they can do more harm than good, since they lose their original meaning as a door to communication with God.

The seven-shot icon is, of course, one of the most revered icons and should stand in the middle of the home iconostasis, where it should be - next to the icon of Jesus Christ. This option is classic, but if there are no other icons in the house, you can place it alone and light a candle or lamp in front of it. At this link you can learn more about this and other icons by purchasing books.

In tradition, believers also have the option of wearing an icon under their heart - on their chest, along with a pectoral cross. In this case, the icon will remind the owner of itself more often and this will provide more frequent communication with the Mother of God through her image. Which, of course, will increase the degree of influence of the icon on our lives.

Where else can you hang the Seven-Shot Icon of the Mother of God? Often believers place this image above the front door. It is believed that the Mother of God will protect the house from the invasion of enemies and envious people.

The celebration of this icon is set on August 26.

Disagreement over true origins

In church notes there are many different versions of the appearance of this divine and powerful icon in the capital of Lithuania in the 15th century. The first talks about the divine appearance of the shrine on the Sharp Gate of the Gate in 1431. According to another assumption, the icon of the Most Pure Virgin was presented to Prince Olgerd, who converted to Christianity, by Emperor Paleologus.

In 1839, T. Narbutt published a version in his book that became widespread among Orthodoxy. The historian often resorted to falsifications and speculation based on Canon D. Lodziata. The latter wrote about the bringing of the shrine by Olgerd from Korsun (Chersonese) as a military trophy after the victory over the Crimean Tatars. The prince's wife presented the image to the clergy of the newly built Trinity Church. However, this hypothesis of Narbut and Lodziata was not confirmed in more authoritative sources.

Some researchers shared the opinion that the shrine was painted by an Italian artist who lived in Vilna in the 16th century. One scientist notes: Seraphim of Sarov prayed in his own cell before the “Ostrobramskaya” Mother of God, and not before the “Tenderness,” as the majority assumes.

The Polish researcher M. Skrudlik argued: the canvas called “Ostrobramskaya” Mother of God was created in 1619 in the workshop of the Krakow artist L. Porenbsky.

On a note! At the end of the 20th century, a Polish researcher put forward a new theory. She believed that the prototype of the great shrine was the engraving of Thomas de Lue by M. de Vos, a Dutch master of painting.

Rules of supplication

The Mother of God will help only when the person asking has pure thoughts. Prayer works better when people pray in the temple. If this is not possible, you need to do the following at home:

  • before praying to the Mother of God, it is strictly forbidden to commit any sinful acts;
  • an hour before prayer, stay in silence alone with your thoughts, think about what you sincerely want to ask for for the prayer to work, your intentions and thoughts must be pure, but it is undesirable to rejoice and laugh excessively;
  • before the sacrament, be sure to drink holy water and light a candle in front of the icon;
  • During prayer, women are required to cover their heads and wear modest clothing.
  • After the sacred action, be sure to say “Amen,” cross yourself and bow to the icon.

Shrine

In past centuries, wars were a frequent occurrence, so people tried in every possible way to protect themselves from attacks. Sacred objects were endowed with protective properties. That is why icons were often placed above city gates. The residents of Vilnius did the same - the first thing travelers saw when entering the city was the Ostrobram Icon of the Mother of God . What does it protect believers from, besides enemy raids?

Many believe that prayer in front of this image can help in a variety of situations:

remove the curse; dispel the despondency that has taken possession of the soul; alleviates depression; stabilizes the psyche of those who are prone to mood swings; makes babies calmer.

And the chronicles testify to many miracles that have happened. The power of veneration is evidenced by the fact that to this day the shrine remains in the same place. The flow of pilgrims does not dry out, who can look at the heavenly face for a long time and pray for their sorrows to the heavenly intercessor.

Icon of the Ostrobramskaya Blessed Virgin Mary

Since in the minds of many believers this image is part of the Annunciation, you can also pray to the heavenly powers (angels) in front of it. It is believed that they are able to protect the apartment from fire and other misfortunes, and reduce conflicts in the family. Angels are also excellent mentors in faith, so one should turn to them in those moments when faith is shaken.

Iconography

The sun's rays illuminate the bowed head, between the rays of the luminary the stars and the moon are visible. The composition is reminiscent of the biblical lines about “the woman clothed with the sun.” Her head is decorated with a crown with 12 stars (a hint at the number of apostles).

The Mother of God humbly folded her hands, as if in anticipation of good news. In a similar way, Orthodox Christians hold them before approaching the Holy Chalice to receive Christ into themselves.

The face expresses meekness and agreement with the will of God. It is believed that this composition previously contained the figure of an Angel who brought the good news to the Virgin. The future Mother of the Lord humbly listens to what God's messenger tells her. But only part of the ancient master’s original plan has been preserved.

The main composition of “Tenderness” is taken from this image - the well-known Seraphim of Sarov offered prayers in front of his cell icon. In Moscow and other cities of Russia, these icons are often identified, but they are different.

Representatives of different religious teachings find their own meaning of symbols in the face of the Most Holy:

Circle - denotes life, which is endless. The crescent is a symbol of a spiritual free person.

However, these interpretations are very far from the Orthodox tradition. They view the Mother of God only as a continuator of the ancient cults that practiced the worship of female goddesses. In Orthodoxy, there is one Lord, one in three persons, and the Mother of God is not a goddess, but the earthly Mother of Jesus Christ.

Theological meaning

A rather rare type of image in which the Most Pure One appears alone, without the Infant Christ. Nevertheless, He is present here invisibly, as an idea (especially if we remember that this is part of the composition of the Annunciation).

Among all humanity, only one immaculate Virgin was found, capable of completely and completely subordinating her being to God’s will. She knew from the Holy Scriptures that one day the Savior would appear on earth.

Young Mary understood and knew the holy texts very well. In her soul she glorified the girl who could become the Mother of Christ. Modesty would never have allowed her to think that this honor would fall to her. This is exactly how Orthodox church tradition sees the Mother of God.

Since the center of the composition here is the Queen of Heaven, the icon painters tried to convey to believers all the greatness of her soul through accessible means. No other image can boast of the beauty of the robes. Pearls, gold, silver, precious stones - all this can rightfully be worn by one who is worthy of receiving Jesus himself. The dress is very full, made of dark fabric - something you won't see in other images. There it is, as a rule, very modest, of a dark red hue (as a sign of the suffering that Mary shared with her Son).

The Mother of God appears here in all her majesty, as evidenced by the crown that crowns her head.

What does it help with?

Many houses have an image of the Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God. What does it protect believers and their families from? Many bring their most secret requests to the Holy Virgin:

About the protection of children. According to church tradition, several kidnapped children were returned unharmed. This is how God’s providence works through prayer. About the search for missing relatives. The Queen of Heaven can not only guide the soul on the right path, but also direct those who have been away for a long time and do not send news about themselves to home. About procreation - it happens that the most worthy people cannot conceive a child. In such cases, one must have faith and perform prayers.

Cure from infertility. For 10 years, Vitaly and Elena could not become happy parents. Where to correctly place the Ostrobramsky Holy Face in the house

This holy relic should be located in every person’s home, because this icon protects from enemies and attracts mutual understanding into the home. Petitions are submitted to the sacred image for:

• About neutralizing damage and healing the family;

• in case of despair;

• About depressed people;

• About happiness and health in the soul of newborns;

• About mentally ill people.

To do this, you need to place the icon in the right corner, which is located opposite the entrance to the house. There should be no other things hanging near the Ostrobramskaya icon; you still need to make sure that the Holy Face is always clean and in order. Do not forget to constantly wipe dust from the icon and ensure that the icon looks acceptable.

Kontakion 3

The power of the Most High overshadows every person who flows with faith to Your celibate icon, which You have granted to people for consolation. For this reason, we, looking with tenderness at Your holy image, as if You are alive and living with us, cry out from the depths of our hearts: autumn and us orphans and helpless, let us sing to the Lord who glorifies You: Alleluia.

History of appearance

The image of the Ostrobramskaya Mother of God is of great importance for both Orthodox believers and Catholics. Many representatives of the Catholic faith believe that the image of the Virgin Mary is made in the Western European tradition. They suggest that the image is a copy of an icon by a Dutch artist and was made in the 17th century.

The Orthodox believe that the Ostrobramskaya icon is an ancient Byzantine image. Some researchers believe that it was brought by Prince Olgerd to Vilnia after the battles that took place in Byzantium near the city of Korsun (Kherson). Therefore, the second name of the icon is Korsun Annunciation.

According to another version existing among the Orthodox, this image was presented as a baptism gift for the ruling prince. There is also an assumption that the icon is part of a large painting depicting the Archangel Gabriel, who brought the news to the Blessed Virgin that she would soon become the mother of the Son of God. The Virgin Mary, hearing this news, bowed her head in tenderness and submission to the will of God. But to date no evidence has been found for this assumption. Some believers adhere to the version that the Ostrobramsky image itself appeared above the city gates, demonstrating to Christians the miracles of faith.

Despite the existence of many versions of the origin of the icon, Catholics and Orthodox Christians peacefully share this shrine among themselves, coming from different parts of Europe to venerate the image of the Blessed Virgin. The Day of the Divine Image is celebrated annually by Catholics on April 14, and by Orthodox Christians on December 26.

Veneration and meaning of the icon

According to legends, the appearance of the shrine in Vilnius is associated with the name of the Lithuanian prince Olgerd. In the 14th century, the prince converted to Christianity and received an icon of the Mother of God, which was named Korsunskaya, as a gift from the Byzantine emperor. A little later, the image was transferred to the Trinity Church, which was located in the Ostry, or Russian, end of the city.

When new city walls were built in 1498, a chapel was built above the gate there. The shrine was placed here to protect the city residents from enemy attacks. Then the modern name of the image appeared. From the combination of two Lithuanian words “Sharp” - the accepted name of this part of the city, and “gate” - gate.

Initially, the icon was worshiped by Orthodox Christians. But when the Union was concluded for political reasons, the shrine came under the jurisdiction of powerful Catholic monastic orders. At the turn of the 17th and 17th centuries, it was kept for some time in the Cathedral of St. Teresa, which was owned by the Carmelites. But, despite this, not only Catholic Mass, but also Orthodox services were celebrated in front of the icon.

Members of the Carmelite Order restored the old burnt chapel and returned the relic to its original place. The inhabitants of Vilna revered the icon. Songs were composed in her honor, she was presented with rich gifts, and miraculous help and care from the locals were attributed to her. Widespread veneration of the shrine has helped preserve it to this day.

Orthodox Christians celebrate the memory of the image on January 8 and April 27. Nowadays, you can visit the chapel and venerate the Mother of God, captured by the artist at the moment of the Annunciation. It is amazing how this image, painted in tempera on a simple oak board, became a revered symbol of an entire city.

Prayers to the icon

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos before the Icon of Her “Ostrobramskaya Vilna”

Oh, Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord of the highest powers, Heaven and earth to the Queen and our city of Kiev, omnipotent Intercessor!

Receive this song of praise from us unworthy Thy servants, and lift up our prayers to the throne of Thy Son and our God, may He be merciful to us sinners, and may He add His goodness to those who honor You and worship Your miraculous image with faith and love.

To whom shall we cry out to the Lady? To whom shall we turn in our sorrows, if not to You, Queen of Heaven? Who will receive our cries and our sighs, if not You, Most Immaculate, the Hope of Christians and the refuge for us sinners? Who will protect you more in adversity? At the same time, we earnestly pray to You: cover our sins with Your intercession, protect us from enemies visible and invisible, soften the hearts of evil people who rebel against us.

O Mother of the Lord our Creator! You are the root of virginity and the unfading flower of purity. Accept our unworthy prayer and keep us in spiritual purity, save us from the slander of evil people and from sudden death, and grant us repentance before the end. Have mercy on us in the hours of the day, and in the morning and in the evening, and at all times preserve us: you have kept us standing and sitting, and in every way you have walked, and in the night hours you have provided for those who sleep, cover and protect. ́. In every place and at every time, be for us, Mother of God, an insurmountable wall and a strong intercession. You have appeared to us, the guardian of all life, Most Pure One; Deliver us from demons at the hour of death; Even after death, ask Your Son and our God to find peace.

We, sinners, lift up prayers to You with hope and tenderly cry out: Rejoice, O Blessed One; Rejoice, Delighted One; Rejoice, Most Blessed One; The Lord is with You, with You and with us. We resort to You, as to our undoubted and speedy Intercessor, and to You, as the Almighty Helper, we commit ourselves and each other and our entire life according to Christ God, to Him all befits What glory, honor and worship is with His beginningless Father, with the Most Holy and by His good and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. You are the all-powerful Helper and Intercessor of us all. Bow down to the prayers of all Your servants who flow here to Your holy icon, hear the sighs and voices in which Your servants pray in this holy place.

Instruct the hardened and scattered hearts in our countries on the path of truth: convert those who have fallen from the pious faith and bring them back into contact with the holy Orthodox Catholic Catholic Church and the Apostolic Church. About what other appeals to the Kazan icon there are

In addition to prayer for children, there is also a request for help, for love, for health, for marriage, for conceiving a child, for preserving the family, for work. You see, this prayer is read in different cases, if it is very bad. In any situation, God will come to the rescue, you just have to ask Him with all your heart. Be as sincere as possible in your prayers, never lie to yourself when talking with the Almighty, and always thank God for every success.

The prayer of the Kazan Mother of God is a very strong word that you should be careful with. Address the Lord correctly, believe in what you say. The trouble will definitely go away if you tell the Mother of God in front of the icon what worries you so much and gives you no peace. Also, visit the temple more often, light candles and know that only faith in the soul and heart reveals the true path. God bless you all!
