Construction of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
in Akhtyrskoye was started in 1997 and completed in 2007. At the entrance to the temple territory there is a memorial sign to the Cossacks - the first settlers of the village, with their names listed.
History[edit]
The village of Akhtyrskaya was formed by Zaporozhye Cossacks - settlers of the Azov-Black Sea Cossack army in 1863. Along with the settlers, priests were also sent to the new lands under separate orders.
The first services in the village of Akhtyrskoye at the beginning of the pastoral ministry of the rector, Archpriest Pavel Poldyaev, were held in a temporarily adapted room. Construction of the new temple under his leadership began in 1997 and was completed in 2007.
At the entrance to the temple territory there is a memorial sign to the Cossacks - the first settlers of the village, with their names listed.
Iconography
In the image of the Mother of God of Akhtyrskaya, not Orthodox, but Greek and Italian icon-painting traditions can be traced. The Virgin Mary is painted with folded hands, waist-length, head turned to the left, gaze turned to the crucifix. The Calvary cross is significantly smaller than the figure of the Virgin Mary. The image uses direct perspective, which is not practiced in the Byzantine tradition.
On many well-known copies of the icon there are discrepancies in the image of the Mother of God. The Virgin Mary writes:
- without a headdress, bare-haired;
- with a crown on his head;
- covered with a long blanket (maforium).
On the lists there are different positions of the hands; the Virgin Mary is sometimes surrounded by other figures. The face of the Holy Virgin is sad; she mourns for her crucified Son.
Current state[edit]
Through the direct efforts of the rector, a picturesque pond and a fabulous children's playground were created at the temple.
- Iconostasis
On the left is a floor iconostasis with the Akhtyrskaya icon of the Mother of God, next to it is a reliquary reliquary.
On the right is a floor iconostasis with an icon of the martyr-passion-bearer Eugene (Botkin)
- Sunday School
There is a Sunday school at the church. The classes are traditional - reading the Holy Scriptures, learning Orthodox songs, poems, reading the lives of saints, staging theatrical scenes from Christian history. In addition, Sunday school children, together with their parents and under the guidance of the rector, go on hikes several times over the summer.
- Parish library
The parish library contains more than 1000 books.
This number includes books of encyclopedic content, interpretations of the Holy Scriptures, books of the lives of saints, spiritually educational books, morally instructive books, children's books, etc. In addition, there are periodical magazines. The library is open on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on weekly and holiday services.

LOCAL HISTORY
Not many residents of Kursk know that behind the Yunost cinema, on Akhtyrsky Lane, there is another temple associated with the name of St. Seraphim of Sarov. This is the Church of the Akhtyrka Icon of the Mother of God. During the celebration in 2003 of the 100th anniversary of the saint’s canonization, a memorial plaque was installed on his wall with the words: “Prokhor Mashnin, the future Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, prayed in this church.” And behind the church fence you can see a cross on which is inscribed: “This cross was installed in memory of the deceased citizens of Kursk, buried at the Akhtyrsky Church, as well as in memory of the mother of St. Seraphim of Sarov - Agafya Mashnina, who supposedly rests in this place.”
The mystery of the grave of the mother of Seraphim of Sarov
Presumably, Agafya Mashnina, the mother of St. Seraphim of Sarov, was buried in the cemetery located around the temple. After the fire, her family lived in a house on Moskovskaya Square, and Agafya Fateevna was a parishioner of the Akhtyrsky Church. It is known that her son Prokhor came to Kursk several times during this period. Therefore, it can be assumed that during these visits he attended church.
Agafya Mashnina died in 1800, about which an entry was made in the book of the Akhtyra Church: “... February 29, 1800, widow Agafya, Fateeva’s daughter, Sidorov’s wife, Mashnina, 72 years old, the funeral was conducted by priest Vasily Psarev with the clergy.” This is the basis for the version that the saint’s pious mother was buried outside the fence of this temple. After all, a priest would hardly perform a ceremony in a “strange” churchyard.
“All of this is just speculation,” Father Vasily warns cautiously. “Of course, we cannot confirm anything, because so much time has passed.”
Today, not a trace remains of the Akhtyrskoye cemetery - everything around the temple has long been rolled into asphalt. It is not possible to carry out excavations. But there is another version according to which the parents of Seraphim of Sarov were reburied at the Nikitsky cemetery, near the southern wall. It is based on the testimony of parishioners. However, there are no documents confirming this either.

Lyrics
Canonical texts are read in churches and at home; you can ask the Blessed Virgin for help in your own words.
Troparion
Most blessed Virgin, Pure Mother of God, standing before the Cross of Your Son and our God, you endured great sorrow and received from Him the grace to console those in sorrow. Therefore, reverently looking at Your most pure image and seeing You depicted on it, in front of the Cross of our Savior, in heartfelt contrition we cry out to You: “Zealous, good and merciful Protector! Hasten to deliver us from all sorrow, need and illness and save our souls, may we glorify You with thanksgiving forever.
Kontakion
Let us turn, believers, to the gracious source of mercy and generosity - the miraculous image of the Most Pure Virgin, for it was given to us from above for the salvation of souls and bodies; while worshiping it, let us call upon the Mother of God with love: “O Mother, glorified by all, O All-Merciful Queen, protect and preserve us from all evil through Your maternal intercession before God.
Prayers
O Most Blessed and Most Merciful Lady of the World! Behold, we are sinners looking at Thy holy image and seeing Thee in sorrow and compassion to Christ the Savior crucified for us, who stands before us, earnestly praying to Thee known about us to Thy Son: do not forsake us in the day of trial and tribulation, but in temptation and adversity we protect us with Your all-honorable protection from enemies, visible and invisible, and give us the strength to fulfill the all-perfect and good will of the Creator and the Master of the world. See, our merciful Intercessor, how many sins we are subject to: not only do we sin by will, but we also involuntarily fall into many different sins. For this reason, we resort to You, the sovereign organizer of Christian salvation, and cry out with emotion: enlighten our minds with the knowledge of Divine truth, warm our hearts with the warmth of Christian love and saving desires, and confirm our will in the unfeigned fulfillment of the Lord’s commandments. To her, Most Merciful Lady, come from the heights of heaven to the sighs and prayers of us sinners: heal the illnesses of the sick, pacify the hearts of the embittered, give patience to the suffering, instill the fear of God in those who offend, strengthen those persecuted for the truth, protect orphans and widows, give comfort to those who cry, ask forgiveness for the repentant , calm the demonic storm of passions in sinful souls and in the hearts of those who honor Thee, root meekness and love of Christ and establish this with the spirit of mercy and compassion: but direct the heretics and apostates who have fallen from the faith to the knowledge of the truth and the lips of the wicked, who blaspheme the Holy Church and those who blaspheme the Orthodox faith, block . To our fathers and brothers and sisters who have departed from this life, O Mother of God, ask for forgiveness of sins and the beginning of eternal bliss. When the hour of our death approaches, then, O Lady, accept our soul and rest in this host of the righteous, where the faces of the Angel and saints silently glorify the power and mercy of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and Your motherly intercession and intercession for us, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
The Mother of God showed great mercy to the Orthodox by bestowing a miraculous image. Prayers in front of the Akhtyrskaya icon help everyone who truly believes, turns from the bottom of their hearts, and asks for support in good deeds.
Story
Three years later, the miraculous icon was transferred to the Pokrovsk Church. Many suffering people received help and healing through sincere prayer. Since 1751, she has been revered as miraculous. In 1768, a new Cathedral of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary was consecrated in Akhtyrka, in which the miraculous image was kept until 1905.
About other revered icons of the Mother of God:
- Desperate One Hope
- Kasperovskaya
- Baby jumping
At the beginning of the 20th century, the icon needed restoration, which it was decided to carry out in St. Petersburg. On the way, the shrine was stolen. After some time, she appeared in Harbin. In the middle of the century, the icon was donated to the Russian Orthodox Youth Committee in San Francisco. Here she remains to this day. In 1995, the Akhtyrsky Church was given a list of the miraculous image.
Shrines of the cathedral
Among the especially revered shrines in the temple are the following:
- A complete copy of the miraculous image of the Mother of God of Akhtyrskaya , which is one of the first copies of the icon. The Akhtyrskaya icon depicts the Mother of God, prayerfully folding her hands in front of the Cross with the crucified Lord Jesus Christ. This icon is famous for the numerous miraculous healings associated with it; They pray before her for the successful marriage of their daughters, for healing from various diseases; she is also considered the patroness of children.
- Casket with the right hand of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk and his icon . The saint's brush was left in the cathedral in memory of the period when the holy relics of Tikhon of Zadonsk were here. Especially for her, the icon painter Anatoly Neverov painted a full-length icon of the saint; in addition, a reliquary for the relics and a carved icon case were made.
- Icon of the holy confessor George Kossov with his relics . Georgy Alekseevich Kossov is a Russian Orthodox priest, a native of the Oryol province, an archpriest, revered as an elder during his lifetime, and in 2000 canonized as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church as a confessor.
