History and meaning of the holy icon of the Mother of God, Cup of Patience, text of prayer

The meaning of the icon Prayer for the Cup

First of all, the icon of Prayer for the Cup means for everyone the steadfastness of faith and convictions. Prayer for the cup expresses that Jesus Christ had two wills: Divine and human. The first prayer shows the fear of impending torment and death, which is inherent in any person. On the other hand, with other prayers Jesus expresses his desire to submit to God’s will and accept all hardships. This is a very courageous act, because Jesus knew that with his death he would atone for the sins of people and take responsibility for future sins.

People turn to the icon when they are in a difficult situation or lose hope. The icon of Prayer for the Cup helps not to despair and to find a way out of the situation, to decide what will be more correct. Fear can destroy a person. If someone believes that they are in a hopeless situation, they often choose the wrong path, commit reprehensible acts, and are capable of alienating loved ones.

They pray to the icon of the Prayer of the Chalice in order to make the right decision, find the right path, and not commit stupidity or even terrible acts.

Prayer in front of the icon remains the last hope in such situations when faith in the Lord is the only thing that holds and saves. The Almighty will help the repentant not to succumb to temptation and sin.

Most often, in front of the icon, turning to God, they read the prayer “Our Father”. But other prayers are also used, for example, the prayer to the Holy Spirit or to the Most Holy Trinity. Prayer will strengthen the spirit and faith, and give comfort and peace to the suffering. You need to pray diligently and stay awake, and then the Lord will definitely help the one who asks. Turning to prayer during Lent or Holy Week will be very symbolic. The prayer of Jesus Christ took place on Thursday, which is now called Maundy or Maundy Thursday. This is the fourth day of Holy Week, the last days of Lent.

Many believers strive to receive communion on Maundy Thursday, since during the last Last Vespers, after which he went to the Garden of Gethsemane, he established the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Christians call the Eucharist the Sacrament of communion of the body and Blood of Christ, the unity of the believer with God. To this day, the Sacrament is carried out in all churches at every Divine Liturgy.

The meaning of the icon of the Holy Mother of God “Cup of Patience”

People who saw the icon say that on the glass they saw a cup in the hands of the Child. The Son of God peers into it and drinks away the sins of people. In his sad look one can see sorrow for them and the understanding that he will have to suffer for sinners.

Parishioners visiting the church say that there was a time when people decided to place the image of the Queen of Heaven on glass inside the temple. They were afraid that hooligans might damage her. After they did this, the image disappeared from the glass. They tried to return it using artificial and daylight, but all human actions were useless.

But after the glass was taken back to the street, the images of the Mother of God and Christ began to appear again. Orthodox Christians claim that the Virgin Mary, by such a miracle, makes it clear that She is destined to protect people, and not the Heavenly Queen.

What does it help with?

Many needy people resorted to the help of the shrine. After prayer near the image, miracles happened many times. Most often, people got rid of alcohol addiction. After healing, they had no desire to drink alcohol. They say that relatives of those people who themselves do not understand their addiction come to the church to ask for help. It is believed that the face can heal from any form of addiction, including gambling, smoking, gambling, and drugs. The Mother of God bestows grace, which strengthens faith and gives strength to resist sinful addictions, protects from devilish temptations that push people onto the path of self-destruction and further death.

There is evidence that the shrine helped in solving housing issues. Lik facilitates the conclusion of agreements for the exchange of apartments, purchase and sale. Prayers near the image help to detect deception in documents in time and resolve the issue of inheritance. To receive help from the Mother of God, the thoughts of believers must be pure and sincere. Confessors recommend reading the akathist near the icon to those parents who are sending their children into adulthood. The shrine helps not to get confused in distorted moral guidelines, it protects from dangers, and guides on the right path. Those people who are desperate to arrange their personal lives turn to the face. Prayer saves the face and from fornication.

ICON OF THE VIRGIN CALLED “THE CUP OF PATIENCE” Church of the Martyr John the Warrior (Novokuznetsk, Siberia). In 2000, the outlines of the Virgin Mary with the Child in her arms miraculously appeared on the window glass of the church. An icon was subsequently painted from this image and called the “Cup of Patience.”

A face appeared on the glass of the Church of St. John the Warrior, which is located in the Ordzhonikidze district, in 2000 before the Intercession. After the service, the woman, leaving the church, saw the outline of the Virgin Mary on the window. For believers, this became a sign from above. At first, church workers were afraid to even wash the window, for fear of erasing the image. But it was as if he were inside glass, and the water could not affect him. Inexplicable things also happened at the time when it was decided to place the image of the Virgin Mary on glass inside the temple in order to save it from possible hooligan destruction. The face immediately disappeared from the glass. All attempts to return it with the help of artificial and daylight were unsuccessful. But as soon as the glass was taken back to the street, the face of the Mother of God with the Child Christ in her arms appeared again. The believers themselves say that the Mother of God thereby makes it clear that it is she who is destined to protect people, and not vice versa. The face on the glass mysteriously led the church ministers to the idea of creating a new icon. Three years have passed since a face appeared on the glass in the Church of St. John the Warrior. And one of the believers in the city of Kemerovo had a vision at night. Arriving immediately in Novokuznetsk, she informed Father Vasily that it was necessary to paint an icon. She also indicated the name - “Cup of Patience”. They say that on the glass, if you look closely, you can see a cup in the hands of a baby, looking into it and drinking away all human sins. On the recreated icon, the not childishly sad look of Christ expresses sorrow for humanity and the awareness that he will have to suffer for the human race. This is noted by many priests.

The believers of the Church of St. John the Warrior were greatly surprised when they learned that such an icon did not exist in the world. Having once again looked through the catalogs of all the miraculous icons (and there are about 500 of them), we began to search for an icon painter. For the artist Vladimir Shubenkin, these two words “Cup of Patience” immediately determined the line of creation of the holy image. Having spent a whole year on work and church fasts, Vladimir painted the image and presented it to Father Vasily. Then the icon was taken to St. Andrew's Monastery in Moscow for decoration. The craftsmen immediately appreciated it and began working on the ornament. They managed to finish the icon just in time for the patronal feast, and on August 12 it was flown to Novokuznetsk, where a religious procession was held. During the two months of being in the church, the parishioners covered the icon with gold, feeling, in their words, grace. But, according to businessman Sergei, who has become the unofficial custodian of the icon, not everyone perceives it as God’s gift. Returning from the regional center, where Kemerovo residents had the opportunity to get acquainted with the Novokuznetsk “chalice,” Sergei spoke about the reaction of some clergy: “During the 6 days that we spent with the Mother of God at the exhibition, Father Vasily had to listen to a lot of insults addressed to him, including and accusations of fraud from various priests. Today, the image of the Mother of God and Christ on glass is available to everyone who comes to the Church of St. John the Warrior, where Vasily Likhvan conducts his service. Believers associate the miracles that occur with a face on glass, first of all, with a special service conducted by Father Vasily - a lecture. Almost everyone - parishioners and ministers of the church - note that with the appearance of the icon in the church, the power of virtue has increased and the riots of demons during the reading of prayers are becoming less and less. A lot of inexplicable things happen in Father Vasily’s church. Lately, Sergei has been having headaches more and more often. According to him, the only thing that helps him in this case is being near the “Cup of Patience,” as if he had been placed in this place by higher powers.

Miracles

It’s not just alcoholics who turn to the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon. Any passion that appears in the soul requires healing. It harms a person’s spiritual world. Addictions include shopping, social networks, food, drugs and much more. According to the words of the Holy Scripture, passion appears where there is emptiness. The Mother of God expels attachments, not allowing them to return again. It is customary to record miracles from icons. In church books you can find a lot of evidence of miraculous healings, although not everyone shares them for fear of losing them. It is surprising that such events occurred quite recently, for example, in the 2000s. Soldiers returning from hot spots are broken spiritually. Very often they suffer from alcohol addiction. Treatment by a narcologist is not always enough to completely quit alcohol. Therefore, mothers of soldiers or they themselves come to miraculous icons that help get rid of the disease.

According to some pilgrims, the Mother of God appeared to them in their dreams, saying that they needed to go to the icon with prayers. Some managed to be healed after just one prayer service, while others made a lot of effort to get rid of harmful passions. And one pilgrim from Volgograd lived in the monastery for 40 days and constantly prayed. Thus, she saved her son from drug addiction. The image of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” helps solve other everyday issues.

Icon of Jesus Christ “Prayer for the Cup”

The widespread plot of the iconography of Jesus Christ, based on the famous biblical story, reflects one of the important moments in his earthly life and Christian faith. The image of “Prayer of the Cup” can be found in many Christian churches.

The plot of the icon

The iconography of the icon of Jesus Christ “Prayer of the Cup” is based on the event preceding the arrest of the Savior and his martyrdom on the cross.

Knowing about the imminent ordeals and betrayal of his disciple Judas, he went to the Garden of Gethsemane to spiritually prepare for the upcoming terrible events.

Jesus asked the apostles accompanying him to support him and stay vigil during his prayer.

Icon of the Savior “Prayer for the Cup”

But John, Peter and James fell into a deep sleep, leaving the teacher alone with mental torment, which greatly upset him. Jesus Christ offered up such fervent prayer to the Lord that bloody sweat streamed from his forehead.

He addressed the Almighty with three prayers with the following content:

  1. In his first address, he asked to prevent future suffering.
  2. The second prayer spoke of readiness to fulfill God's plan.
  3. Jesus' third prayer reflected the submission and humility with which he would fulfill his destiny.

Important! Having found peace and inner harmony, the Savior returned to his disciples and warned them about the approaching guards. He also pointed out to them that in difficult situations they should not despair, because only a cheerful spirit and sincere, fervent prayer will help them avoid temptations

A picturesque reflection of a religious plot

The well-known biblical story has become widespread in both secular and religious painting.

Most of the “Prayer for the Cup” icons depict a large figure of Christ against the backdrop of the Mount of Olives and the garden spread out on it. Sometimes the walls of the city can be seen in the background.

The figure of the Savior, kneeling and folding his hands in a prayerful gesture, is enveloped in divine light.

He looks at an angel holding a cup in his hands, which symbolizes the suffering and trials that lie ahead for the Son of the Lord.

Some versions of the icon are multi-figure compositions, in which the figures of sleeping apostles and guards and Judas rushing into the garden are depicted in the background. These additional characters add to the loneliness that Jesus experiences during his mental anguish and subsequent prayer.

Interesting! The iconographic pictorial representation of this subject is practically no different from the works of secular artists. The biblical story “Prayer for the Cup” can be seen in numerous Christian churches, museums and in photographs in various printed and electronic catalogs.

Meaning of the icon

The image of “Prayer for the Cup” expresses one of the basic principles of Christianity - submission to the plan of the Almighty and faith in His Power. At the moment of prayer, human and divine essences fight in Christ. Jesus, like any person, is afraid of upcoming trials and death. But the Son of God accepts the torment prepared for him and obediently follows the will of the Father.

We advise you to study Congratulations on Maundy Thursday

Ordinary people should behave in difficult situations in the same way. A sincere petition addressed to the Lord will help to overcome despair, strengthen the spirit and give strength. Only a humble request for help and faith in the Lord will overcome the trials determined by the Higher powers for a person.

What does it help with?

With prayer, the “Prayer for the Cup” comes to the image of the Lord as the last hope for help in the following situations:

  • having lost hope in difficult life circumstances;
  • despairing of finding the right path in resolving important issues;
  • experiencing mental turmoil;
  • being exposed to strong temptation and bad influence. Icon of Jesus Christ “Prayer for the Cup”

The prayer said during Holy Week has the greatest power

In order for her to be heard, it is important to fulfill the following conditions:

  • try to clear your mind of evil thoughts;
  • express readiness to follow the Lord’s plan;
  • accept any of His Will with humility.

In front of the image they light a candle or lamp and kneel like Jesus Christ. Church ministers recommend reading four prayers in front of this icon:

  • The Lord's Prayer (Our Father);
  • Prayer to the Holy Spirit;
  • Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity;
  • Symbol of faith.

You should know! You can pray in front of any holy image, not only by saying special akathists. A humble request or humble gratitude can be expressed in your own words. The main thing is that they are sincere and come from the heart.

The icon of the Lord “Prayer for the Cup” can be located in the home iconostasis. Through the prayer offered to the Lord before her, believers receive help when despair and a feeling of loneliness overcome the soul and mind.

Meaning of the icon

According to biblical legend, when the Last Supper ended, Jesus and his disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane. This garden was very beautiful and had a wonderful view of Jerusalem. The Lord loved to spend time there and Judas knew about it. Therefore, he brought the guards there to arrest Christ.

The Son of God knew about his future fate, so he decided to pray for the salvation of his soul and his offenders. In prayer He said, “Let this Cup pass from me.” His prayer was so earnest that bloody drops of sweat rolled down his face.

During prayer, two essences fight within him: human and divine. The first fears death and desires a different development of events, the second completely accepts the will of the Lord and takes upon itself the burden of human sinfulness. Having such torment within himself, Christ prayed three times:

  • the first time he asked to be saved from the cup of suffering;
  • the third time he expressed submission and humility.

Orthodox Christians do this too, praying before the icon in the most difficult situations in order to feel the support and help of the Lord. After all, the Lord certainly helps those who turn to Him with all their spiritual faith.

What do they pray for in the “Prayer of the Chalice” icon?

In addition, they pray in front of the icon when it is difficult to make the right decision and choose the right path. When a person has a difficult period in life, he always has hope in the Lord, who will help him take the right step and not regret what he has done. It is in such cases that they resort to the image of the “Prayer of the Cup.”

May the Lord protect you!

Cup of patience - what kind of icon? Where is? Her story?

The Icon of the Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice” was miraculously found at the beginning of the century before last. As often happens, the miraculous image was hidden for the time being from human eyes and the original list is unknown, as is the entire backstory of the creation of the icon. All we can say is that this is a marvelous example of Byzantine icon painting, marked by such miraculous signs as the flow of myrrh, healing from drunkenness (alcoholism). smoking and drug addiction. Prayer before her is a sure help in solving housing problems and many others, for example, related to issues of creating and maintaining a family.

About the history and meaning of the icon Iconographically, the image goes back to the type of the Mother of God-Oranta: the Infant Christ is depicted standing in a cup, which symbolizes the Cup of Communion. The Mother of God in the icon with her hands raised up prays for sinners and calls for an inexhaustible source of spiritual joy and consolation.

Those who do not have the opportunity to come to the city of Serpukhov write letters to the brethren of the monasteries and send telegrams with requests to pray in front of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon in order to get rid of the serious illness of drunkenness or drug addiction for themselves or one of their loved ones. Both monasteries keep special books where all the miracles of healing that occurred through prayer before the image of the Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice” are recorded. The cases described in these books are no less striking than the history of the appearance of the image of the Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice”.

Thank you for the very detailed information about the Icon of the Inexhaustible Chalice. it was very interesting to read. But the icon of the Cup of Patience is a completely different icon, it is called the Cup of Patience. Despite the wrong answer, given your work, I give you LO

“Prayer for the Cup” and the biblical story

When the last Last Supper in his life ended, the Savior and his followers went for a walk in the Garden of Gethsemane. From this garden there were wonderful views of the whole of Jerusalem.

Judas, having decided to betray, pointed out to the guards the location of Jesus Christ. And the Savior was arrested.

Jesus guessed that his fate would be terrible. And I decided to pray fervently. He prayed for his soul, as well as for forgiveness for the traitor and offenders. When the Savior whispered the words of prayer, drops of bloody sweat dripped from his face. And the words of his prayer sounded like this: “Let this cup pass from me.”

During prayer, two sides seemed to be fighting in Jesus Christ: human and divine. The part of Jesus that was a simple man wanted to avoid a tragic outcome. But his Divine essence resigned itself to the situation and accepted the will of God.

Christ prayed three times while under arrest:

  • to protect yourself from suffering;
  • to show readiness before God to take on human sins;
  • to express submission and humility.

This algorithm of prayer is also used by Christians who pray in front of the “Prayer of the Chalice” icon. It is believed that this way you can get help in the most difficult situations.

After all, the main distinguishing feature of the Christian faith is humility before the Lord. Uncomplaining trust in his will, as well as meekness and respect for the fate that God has prepared for man.

The significant icon “Prayer of the Cup” helps where it is difficult to choose the right path. And where a person cannot make a decision. After fervent prayer, the decision comes by itself, and your heart becomes light and joyful.

They also pray to the icon for help in order to cope with severe despair. They ask you to clarify unclear situations, give protection and advice, and tear away the veil of secrecy.

It is worth remembering that it is not the icon itself that helps believers, but the Lord, who channels his power into the world through the sacred image. And you need to turn to him, and not to the picture in the frame with monograms.

It is customary to keep this icon in the home iconostasis. But many churches also have it. In a moment of need and need, it is necessary to light candles in front of the icon and ask for help with humility and understanding of the will of the Lord.

Humility and willingness to submit to God's will is the key to the believer being heard and his request being considered from above. The ability to accept what is impossible to understand is one of the virtues of a true Christian.

Everyone has experienced situations in life that are simply impossible to understand with the human mind. But the goal here is not understanding, but faith. If a person does not understand, but believes, then he passes his test with dignity.

Only God knows why certain events happen in our lives. There is no point in asking, “Why?” when it is impossible to understand. It is better to believe that this is prepared by God for a reason. And everyone will be rewarded according to their faith.

The popular icon "Prayer of the Cup" conveys an important biblical lesson. It depicts the Lord himself, praying to God and shrouded in heavenly light. Sometimes the icon also depicts angels next to Jesus. But more often Christ is alone on it. This icon has many versions of the image. But believers always recognize it by its characteristic pictorial composition. “Prayer for the Cup” gives people hope for quick help in the most difficult and intractable cases. But first of all, before this holy image, despair and hopelessness are removed from the soul of a Christian. They calm you down and help you find spiritual strength to overcome the crisis.

The widespread plot of the iconography of Jesus Christ, based on the famous biblical story, reflects one of the important moments in his earthly life and Christian faith. The image of “Prayer of the Cup” can be found in many Christian churches.

Cup of patience

The appearance of the Mother of God in Kuzbass and the message she conveyed got the whole country talking.

About that day, which has already changed the lives of many BEFORE and AFTER, they say that it was “the very long-awaited appearance of the Mother of God of the last times.” Then the Mother of God with the Child Christ in her arms appeared in the Novokuznetsk window...

“Kuzbass” found the woman who saw them first, learned from her and other eyewitnesses the details of the miracle and found out what happened immediately, what happened next, and what awaits us all.

Mother and child

“I saw the Mother of God alive - in the window of the Novokuznetsk Church of the Holy Martyr John the Warrior. And the noise began - and she froze... The miraculous image of the Mother of God and the Child Christ was imprinted and remained on the glass. It was September 11, 2000,” 58-year-old Galina Matyushina begins our communication session with the most important thing.

She is from Mezhdurechenka, but now in the Urals, she has made repairs and prepared the hut of her 92-year-old aunt for her return to her native village of Talitsa. I'm in Kemerovo. We are talking on WhatsApp about an event after which 18 years have passed. And Galina gives an interview for the first time...

– On the eve of THAT DAY, two grandmothers I knew asked me to take them by car from Mezhdurechensk to Novokuznetsk, to Zyryanovka, to the Church of St. John the Warrior. I'm an experienced driver. And I had already heard a lot about the lectures in that church, about how people got better after them. And I decided - I’ll go, and at the same time I’ll ask my parents for healing... And so we go. I'm worried: I'll meet something I've never seen. Grandmothers to me: “During a reprimand, people scream so loudly and terribly... It’s not them, it’s the demons from which the priest delivers them... And so that the demons don’t pester you, you say: “Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner...”

And here we are - at the lecture. Everything we saw and heard shocked us. Later I realized that this was happening (the old women were walking in a cartwheel, over their backs, candles were smoking) because the Mother of God was about to appear. After all, I have never seen such fear in lectures before.

And when Father Vasily began to anoint everyone with blessed oil, my grandmothers - ahead of everyone, and me with them. Then - into the yard for a short break. We got into the car. They took out a basket of pies, tea, and that’s it – they were already eating. And I just take the pie, raise my eyes, and suddenly I see... Right in front of us is the window of the temple. I see the Mother of God in the window! She bent over her child. They are alive. And I can almost hear her telling him, knowing his future, rejoicing and grieving: “Don’t be afraid, I’m with you”... Then the Mother of God, looking at us, holds out the dish and shakes her head, scolding, which means we didn’t pray before food.

I never took a bite of the pie. Grandmothers to me: “Eat!” I told them: “Look, Mother of God! He’s looking at us!” They raised their heads: “Oh! Kazanskaya! - “No, Vladimirskaya!” Let them argue among themselves like this. Here the Mother of God froze. The images of her and her son were frozen on the glass.

And we returned to the temple, but didn’t say anything to anyone. When leaving, I was afraid to even start the car, so as not to make noise... And I kept looking at the window with all my eyes.

And for a long time afterwards she didn’t tell anyone anything, only her sons. And the grandmothers began to tell. And when we arrived at the Church of St. John the Warrior once again - in October 2000, a relative of one of the grandmothers told Father Vasily about the window. He didn't believe it at first. I confirmed. People poured to the window... And for the first time I saw THEM...

Years have passed.

“I thought a lot about why it fell to me to become an eyewitness to the miracle?!” The Mother of God knew what would soon happen, she wanted to strengthen... In general, to strengthen all mothers with her appearance,” after a pause, Galina shares her innermost.

In the life of Galina, who, after a divorce, raised two sons alone, and in the most difficult, unpaid 1990s, there was and is one very important number.

On September 11, 1987, she and her sons, having arrived from Mezhdurechensk to St. Petersburg, were baptized in the church.

On September 11, 2000, she witnessed the apparition of the Virgin Mary in Novokuznetsk.

On September 11, 2002, her youngest son, 15-year-old Tikhon, died in Mezhdurechensk. (Before that, he skillfully and lovingly carved two crucifixes of Christ. He, Galina recalls, “was asked about this by a teacher; he once, while serving in a “hot” spot, having received a mortal wound, promised: “If I survive, I will carve a crucifix,” but how long I tried it again later and it didn’t work. But I gave the task to Tikhon, and it worked out.”

And four months after Tikhon’s death, Ivan, Galina’s eldest son, a student in Novosibirsk, late in the evening on the street received seven knife wounds from the crowd surrounding him and then lay for three hours in 35-degree frost. And when the ambulance picked him up, there was almost no chance of survival. Galina, having learned about this, prayed to the Mother of God and asked for help to save at least one son. And, having never written poetry, suddenly in ten minutes (“The Mother of God dictated...”) wrote an akathist to her... She read and read, and Vanya survived...

And a few years later, Galina, Vanya and another woman organized a procession of the Virgin Mary from Altai to Kuzbass. And since then, Galina has been holding a big religious procession every year... And Tikhon, his mother believes, “is in heaven as a priest, since childhood he loved the Cross of the Lord, he saw it everywhere and ran to the Cross...”

This cup...

So, the miraculous image on glass was seen for the first time in 2000.

In February 2008, the window with the miraculous image was broken. It was kicked by a sick man who was being led out of the temple by the arms. And then people took thousands of pieces of glass from their homes...

But the image, unlike any previously known to the world, was not lost!

Novokuznetsk icon painter Vladimir, it seems, was given from above to see this future.

– I remember he came to me with the words that the image on the glass could be broken... And Vladimir studied it for a year, made sketches. I checked one well-taken photograph of a window... And in 2003, he painted the icon! She turned out THIS way... You stand nearby and feel: the Mother of God is breathing... Grace comes from her,” Father Vasily (Likhvan), the rector, told me later in Novokuznetsk, in that very Church of St. John the Warrior. And he explained that it was the icon painter who examined the scroll, the bowl, and many other important details in the image on the glass.

“I didn’t see the cup on the glass right away,” Father Vasily admitted to me. – Like two hands – higher than the Mother of God – I didn’t see them at first. The Virgin Mary is carried by an angel wearing a cloth, do you see the cloth? Do you see little angels? However, many people managed to piece together the miraculous image on the glass and did not see it right away...

And then, when the icon of the miraculous image made from glass was ready, Father Vasily kept thinking about what to call it.

– Novokuznetskaya? Siberian? Doesn’t fit... At the end of the service he said: “People! Pray, the Lord will tell you what to call the icon.” And a month and a half later, a woman from Altai, who was at that service with a sick child, wrote to us in a letter that while still in church, it came to her mind during prayer: “The Cup of Patience... The Cup of Patience... The Cup of Patience...” That’s what we called the icon. After all, you can’t imagine anything better. If you think for a thousand years, you won’t come up with it... These two words say it all. According to the Gospel, everything is connected with the Cup of Patience. The Lord endured such suffering, the Mother of God... Look at the icon. The Lord is turned to the Chalice. He has a scroll with him, it says that he will have to suffer for the human race, and he looks into the cup and knows that he must drink the cup... And each of us is given our own cup, and we must carry it through our whole lives, and we must drink the cup until end...

Father Vasily says that new glass was inserted in place of the broken one a long time ago; it was later applied to it, and it looks like frost, the outline of the “Cup of Patience” icon.

The wooden icon of the Mother of God “Cup of Patience” has been considered locally revered since 2005. And in connection with the many healings when turning to her, she is miraculous. And now, on Christmas Eve 2019, with the blessing of the bishop in the church, the collected testimonies and documents about the healings of people who turned to this icon were transferred to the diocese. They will soon be taken to Moscow, and the Synod will decide. It's time for the icon to become universally revered!

...There is silence in the temple. You listen and understand, looking at the “Cup of Patience,” what humanity has ahead.

And then - the frost is getting stronger on all sides, and you are standing in the courtyard opposite the window where Galina, and then many other people saw the Virgin Mary and her son, where then the icon painter Vladimir, looking at the miraculous image on the glass, was able to see the Cup of Patience...

And you can’t tear yourself away from the window, you almost can’t breathe, amazed by the feat, the truth and love of the world that you have discovered...

HOW TO PRAY TO THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

Before the icon, they pray to the Lord for all their needs and, of course, confess their sins and prayerfully prepare for Confession and Communion. The Church blesses us to read the morning and evening prayers every day, which are in every prayer book, with conversions and repentance before the Lord. Any prayers can be read both in the temple and in front of the home iconostasis.

The two most important prayers are the Lord's Prayer and the Jesus Prayer. You can replace the words of the prayer book with the Jesus prayer on the rosary in front of the icon: you need to mentally or out loud say the words: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner,” and move the bead on the rosary. This should be done for 10 minutes in the morning and evening - this will be your prayer rule. You can also pray with the rosary on the road. The Jesus Prayer is one of the most famous Orthodox prayers. This is a very short prayer with a very deep meaning. Surprisingly, this is both the first step on the path to becoming a believer and the prayer of holy ascetics of piety. Her grace and power are very great. Prayer is an appeal to God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ for help and mercy. In any difficulties in life, on any day, this prayer can be read so that God will protect you from all evil.

The Lord’s Prayer, simply, is the “Our Father,” the words of which all our ancestors knew (there was even the expression “to know like the Lord’s Prayer”) and which every believer should teach his children. If you don’t know its words, learn them by heart; you can read the Lord’s Prayer in Russian:

We recommend studying Psalm 103

“Our Father who is in Heaven! May your name be holy and glorified, may your kingdom come, may your will be done, both in heaven and on earth. Give us the bread we need today; and forgive us our debts, which we forgive our debtors; and may we not have the temptations of the devil, but deliver us from the influences of the evil one. For Yours is in heaven and earth the Kingdom and the power and the glory of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit forever. Amen".

The Lord's Prayer is also called the Lord's Prayer because its words were given by the Lord Himself, they were written down by the evangelists and are found in the New Testament.

Before the Lord's and Jesus Prayer, as before any prayer, you need to follow a few simple rules: - It is better to read the prayer, resorting to the mercy of the Lord, in silence, at least nothing should distract you

— It is important to focus on the words of the prayer so that your thoughts do not wander. - You can pray at work, and during some activity, but not from the very beginning, but when you feel that it is possible, that prayer brightens your heart, illuminating your feelings with faith and a sense of the omnipresence of God

— Refuse rote memorization and repetition, trying to understand the meaning of spoken words and their deep meaning. - Prepare your thoughts for prayer, meditate on the omnipotence of God, bow with love before the Lord.

Prayer text

Prayer to the Lord

Praise be to You, Father of mercies and God of all consolation, that You never leave Your sufferers without visitation and consolation. To punish - You punish them, but You do not put them to death; although You are often the hidden God for them, You are the Savior of them all. Seal this consolation, O Lord, in my heart and make it true to me when disaster is near and there is no helper. Be my light when I sit in darkness; make sure that the knowledge of my sins and what they deserve produces in me true humility and patience. Strengthen the faith in me, as in Jacob, when trouble comes, so that I will fight and not let go of You until You bless me. Make sure that I do not run away from You in suffering, O my Shepherd, but that my cheerfulness increases and I become more zealous for Your prayer and praise. Open my mind, so that I understand the Scripture, learn from it Your ways, and in true silence of heart I completely and completely surrender to You, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord! Amen.

Second prayer to the Lord

Father of mercies and God of all comfort! I appeal to you in the name of Jesus Christ to grant me true Christian patience. Arm me with it against all sorrow, so that I may be patient in it, for it is very precious. Make me ready to lift up the cross of Christ, patiently bear it and firmly remain under it to the end. Drive away from me all murmuring and all annoyance of the flesh at the weight of the cross and the length of its time. Appear, O beloved Jesus, with Your patience under the cross and on the cross, appear before my eyes and my heart, so that by contemplating You I may be encouraged and strengthened to constantly endure everything. Do it, O patient Savior, so that I may not grow weary in my spirit, but with patience may I enter through suffering and sorrow into the Kingdom of God. I need to have patience so that, having fulfilled the will of God, I will receive what is promised. I ask him from You, to please me to fulfill my request!

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Assuage the sickness of my much-sighing soul, which has quenched every tear from the face of the earth: You drive away sickness from people and resolve the sorrows of sinners, For You are the source of all hope and affirmation, Most Holy Mother of the Virgin! You stand before all, O Good One, who come running with faith into Your sovereign protection: otherwise it is not the imams who sinned to God in troubles and sorrows, ever deliverance, burdened with many sins, Mother of the Most High God! We fall down to You: deliver Your servants from every situation! No one who comes to You is put to shame and comes from You, most pure Virgin Mary: but he asks for grace and accepts the gift of useful petition. Fill, O Pure One, my heart with joy, Thy incorruptible joy that gives birth to the Guilty One! Fill my heart with joy, O Virgin, who accepts fulfillment of joy and consumes sinful sadness!

Psalm 142

Lord, hear my prayer, inspire my prayer in Thy truth, hear me in Thy righteousness, and do not enter into judgment with Thy servant, for no one living will be justified before You. As if the enemy drove my soul, he humbled my belly to eat, he planted me to eat in dark, like dead centuries. And my spirit is depressed within me, my heart is troubled within me. I have remembered the days of old, I have learned in all Your works, I have learned Your hand in all creation. My hands have lifted up to You, my soul, like a waterless land to You. Hear me soon, Lord, my spirit has disappeared; do not turn Your face away from me, and I will become like those who go down into the pit. I hear Thy mercy upon me in the morning, for I trust in Thee. Tell me, Lord, I will go the other way, because I have taken my soul to You. Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord, I have fled to You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God. Your Good Spirit will guide me to the right land. For Thy name's sake, O Lord, live me, by Thy righteousness remove my soul from sorrow. And by Thy mercy consume my enemies and destroy all my cold souls, for I am Thy servant.

How does the “Inexhaustible Chalice” image help?

- alcoholic;

- nicotine;

- prodigal;

- gambling.

It is not known for certain who and when the shrine was painted, because for the time being it was hidden from human eyes. But, looking at the photo of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon or a list poured out of natural amber, one can note that the master who created it belonged to the Byzantine school.

This relic is considered one of the oldest types of images of the Most Pure Virgin - “Oranta”, that is, the Blessing One. She shows the Heavenly Queen with her arms raised and outstretched to the sides - this pose symbolizes Her constant intercessory prayer for every person.

But the main feature of the icon is undoubtedly Jesus standing in the bowl. It personifies Holy Communion, given to Christians as a sign of atonement for original sin. The grace emanating from it never runs out, so the cup is truly “Inexhaustible” - just as there is no limit to the Lord’s mercy and patience.

Understanding from the servant’s story that the Most Holy Theotokos herself had called him, the nuns began to search for the icon more diligently. Meanwhile, the soldier went to venerate the relics of St. Varlaam - the founder of the monastery. Seeing the saint’s appearance on the icon, he immediately recognized the “bright old man” who had appeared to him in a dream.

“Inexhaustible Chalice” in Serpukhov

Finally, in the transition corridor connecting St. George’s Church with the sacristy (storage of church vestments), a forgotten icon was discovered. On the board, in strict Byzantine style, the Mother of God was depicted, and in front of Her was the Child Jesus, standing in the Chalice. When the icon was turned back, we saw the inscription: “The Inexhaustible Chalice.”

The icon was immediately transferred from the corridor to the main church and a prayer service was served. At that moment, the old soldier felt healing. He returned home without a crutch, and the craving for alcohol completely left him.

Of course, most often it is to this image that it is customary to pray to those who suffer from the disease of wine drinking. Drunkenness and drug addiction have become a real scourge of our time, so many people ask the Queen of Heaven for help to combat such addictions.

Important. In canonical Orthodox icons there is not a single detail painted by chance or by the inspiration of the artist

Details of clothing, interior, position and size of figures - everything has a theological meaning. Knowing the meaning of the images of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” makes prayer more meaningful and elevates the mind from the earthly to the heavenly.

By the providence of God, the artist who created the original “Inexhaustible Chalice” and the time of its writing remained unknown. But to this day, information has been preserved about the existence of a similar icon, also depicting the Divine Child standing in a bowl, the “Nicene” one. This ancient image of the Mother of God dates back to 304 and was glorified by its miracles during the siege of the city of Nicaea (now Turkey) by the Arabs.

Prayer service before the icon in Serpukhov

The image of the Virgin Mary in a pose of prayer with raised hands (Oranta) is considered the most ancient. Before Her stands the Throne, on which is the Chalice. These items symbolize making a sacrifice. In the Chalice is Christ Himself, sacrificed for the sins of mankind. It is this Chalice that is “Inexhaustible”, i.e. which cannot be drunk to the end, its contents - the grace of God - are enough for everyone.

The clothing of the Mother of God is also symbolic:

  • dark blue tunic. This color symbolizes the purity of virginity.
  • Maforium. The head and shoulders are covered with a red maforium - a scarf. The red color means the royal origin of the Virgin (from the line of King David) and the torment that She had to endure. The gold trim along the edges of the maforia speaks of the glorification of the Mother of God in the heavenly and earthly worlds.
  • three stars, on the forehead and shoulders, mean “seals of virginity” - at the moment of the birth of the Virgin Herself, before Her birth of Christ and after it.
  • handrails - “cuffs” of different colors on the sleeves of the tunic. This accessory to the priestly vestment speaks of the service of the Mother of God to God and the cause of salvation of the human race.

Christ, as a Child, standing in the Chalice, is dressed in white robes with flashes of gold. During the Old Testament, white color was considered “the beginning of all colors,” just as God is the beginning of all creations. The icon painters depicted the radiance of grace with golden strokes.

The hands of the Most Pure Virgin are in a prayer position, and those of Christ are in a blessing position. Above the head of the Mother of God is a halo, signifying holiness. The four Greek letters on either side are abbreviated words for “Mother of God.” In addition to these inscriptions, the icon may also contain the name of the image.

History of the Cup of Patience icon

In 2000, before the Intercession, one parishioner, leaving the Church of St. John the Warrior, which was built in the Ordzhonikidze district, noticed the face of the Queen of Heaven on the window. Orthodox Christians considered this appearance of the Virgin Mary’s face to be a sign sent from above. At first, the people who served in the temple were afraid to wash the window, because they were afraid of destroying the image. But it was as if it was inside the glass, so the water could not have any effect on the image.

After 3 years had passed since the appearance of the face, an Orthodox Christian woman from the city of Kemerovo saw a vision at night. The woman immediately went to Novokuznetsk, where she told Father Vasily about the need to paint an icon. She announced that it should be called “The Cup of Patience.” The parishioners of the temple where the face of the Virgin Mary appeared were very surprised to learn that there is no such icon. They carefully studied the catalogs of miraculous icons (there are approximately 500 of them), and then began to look for an icon painter.

They chose the artist Vladimir Shubenkin. He presented the painted icon as a gift to Father Vasily. After that, she was transported to St. Andrew’s Monastery, located in Moscow. This was done so that it would be adequately decorated. The masters doing this finished by the patronal feast.

On August 12, she was delivered to Novokuznetsk. There was a procession of the cross. Parishioners claim that they feel the grace emanating from her. But, according to private entrepreneur Sergei, who is its unofficial custodian, some people do not consider what happened to be a miracle. He says that when he traveled to the city of Kemerovo, accompanying the icon, Father Vasily had to face a huge amount of insults. Even some priests accused him of fraud.

Nowadays, the face on the glass can be seen by all people who visit the temple where it originated. Vasily Likhvan conducts the service there.

Why ask for help?

Reading the text of the words in the prayer against drunkenness, we rejoice at the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon. Heals existing vicious addictions:

  • drunkenness;
  • alcoholism;
  • smoking tobacco;
  • drug addiction.

The most powerful prayer against drunkenness helps to get rid of not only vice, but also to guide a person on the true path of Christian virtue, changing the spiritual world and personality of the believer.

  • The main thing is to believe and ask from the bottom of your heart.
  • Getting rid of addiction is not easy, the process is long. It takes patience.
  • After a sincere prayer service before the Chalice, the fallen husband or son will be resurrected to a full life.

Inexhaustible fits:

  • If the patient refuses treatment, without recognizing alcohol dependence (anosognosia). The ritual is carried out without the alcoholic’s knowledge by reading the text of the petition from the icon.
  • True believers who pray every day. He will cure father, daughter, son, wife, for himself, relatives (uncles, aunts, grandfathers, grandmothers, nephews, nieces, grandchildren and granddaughters) from drunkenness.
  • Keeping the secret. A visit to a narcologist sometimes provokes problems in work (professional) activities. It happens that publicity about drug registration in some professions is not permissible.
  • Treatment of drunkenness, alcoholism, and drug addiction is expensive. A prayer that is free, the Chalice does not require financial costs.
  • Prayer can be the basis and complement to treatment. Inexhaustible will lead the state of mind to harmony and balance. It will support a person’s confidence in making the right choice, the decision to quit abusing alcohol.

Not only those suffering from an irresistible craving for the green serpent, but also those with other harmful and ugly habits seek help from the icon. We advise you to study the Prayers of St. Basil of Ostrog

How to pray

First, a commitment is made to read the akathist for 40 days. The text contains everything you need to ask God in this case. As a rule, you shouldn’t invent anything, but if you really want to. You can add a few sentences of your own.

The best option for praying for deliverance from drunkenness is a trip to the Vysotsky Monastery, where today the icon of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” is located. There you can stay there for several days. If it is impossible to visit, they often simply order a prayer service by phone or mail.

You can pray at home, preferably in front of a consecrated image. Read the prayer alone or together. Modern language or Church Slavonic is acceptable. Candles are lit. It is advisable to repeat it from time to time, even if the person has forgotten about the wine.

When releasing their child into adulthood, parents can ask the Inexhaustible Chalice for help. If a relative or just a friend is very worried about someone, especially for someone who has lost himself, who has lost his moral priorities. In case of purchasing or changing housing.

It is preferable to choose a corner or wall from the east for the image of the Inexhaustible (Inexhaustible) Chalice. There should be enough space around it so that several worshipers can fit without disturbing each other.

At the first signs of addiction, you need to pray for the patient, even if it seems to him only a funny habit. In difficult cases, you need to contact Orthodox rehabilitation centers, which are located in every diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church under the Departments for Combating Alcoholism and Drug Addiction.

“Oh, most merciful Lady, Mother of God! We now resort to Your intercession! Do not turn away from our prayers, but graciously hear us: wives, children, mothers.”

“Heal our relatives - fathers, brothers, relatives - who are obsessed with the serious illness of drunkenness (drug addiction, smoking) and because of it are falling away from the Church! Most Holy Theotokos, touch their hearts and rise from the Fall, lead them to saving abstinence! Amen."

Through the intercession of the Mother of God and all the saints, may the Lord protect you!

How to Pray to Jesus Christ

If you don’t know how and what to ask God for, say briefly: “Lord, grant me and my family everything that is useful to us, bless our life.”

You can also read “Our Father,” the words of which were known to all our ancestors (there was even an expression “to know like the Lord’s Prayer”) and which every believer should teach his children. If you don’t know its words, learn them by heart; you can read the “Our Father” prayer in Russian:

“Our Father who is in Heaven! May your name be holy and glorified, may your kingdom come, may your will be done, both in heaven and on earth. Give us the bread we need today; and forgive us our debts, which we forgive our debtors; and may we not have the temptations of the devil, but deliver us from the influences of the evil one. For Yours is in heaven and earth the Kingdom and the power and the glory of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit forever. Amen".

Or read a prayer to the Lord, glorifying His Resurrection and omnipotence, in Russian:

“Seeing the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the Holy Lord Jesus, the only Sinless One! We worship Your Cross, O Lord Christ, and we sing and glorify Your Holy Resurrection! You are our God, we have no other gods besides You, we magnify Your Name! Come, all believers, let us worship the Holy Resurrection of Christ - after all, joy came to the whole world through the Cross of Christ! Always blessing the Lord, we glorify His Resurrection because He Himself endured crucifixion and conquered death by death!”

Turning to God Himself is the most important prayer. Pray to the Lord Almighty at any moment in life:

  • Ask the Lord for help in any matter, everyday difficulties and troubles,
  • Pray in danger
  • Ask for help with the needs of your loved ones and friends,
  • Repent before God of your sins, asking to forgive them, to let you see your mistakes and vices and correct yourself,
  • Praying for healing in illness,
  • Turning to Him in sudden danger,
  • When you have anxiety, despondency, sadness in your soul,
  • Thank Him for your joys, successes, happiness and health.

"Holy Supper of the Lord"

Another icon depicting Jesus Christ is “The Holy Supper of the Lord.” It personifies the event that happened on Maundy Thursday - the penultimate day of the Savior’s presence among people. Jesus gathered the 12 apostles at one table.

Jesus blessed the bread and gave it to one of the disciples, saying: “Eat, for this is My body.” Then he blessed the cup of wine, saying the following words: “Drink, it’s all from her.”

"The Last Judgment"

The Last Judgment icon symbolizes the end of the world, which will occur after the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. At this time, the Last Judgment will take place on sinful and righteous people. After this, man will unite with God forever, and the world will be renewed.

The icon also depicts hell, the underworld, where all sinners will go (bottom left) and heaven, in which righteous people will live forever (top right).

History of the icon Prayer for the Chalice

Christ came to give his body to be torn to pieces, shed sinless blood. All so that people can get back to the paradise they lost. Christ's prayer at first was to escape his destiny. Only then His prayer expresses complete humility with God's will. Christians are given a lesson here - everyone must drink their cup of suffering, prepared by the Lord, and subordinate their mind, will and entire being to the will of God.

We do not always understand and like the Creator's intentions. But in order for victory to ultimately take place, it is necessary to accept them - by faith, because this is impossible to do with reason. The entire human element resists death to the end, even often denies it, although it is inevitable.
