The spirits of evil and good have been known since ancient times, the line between them and the gods is very blurred
According to many researchers, spirits are gods from half-forgotten cults. For example, the Slavic goblin and vodyanoy could well have been deities of Slavic paganism.
Historically, belief in spirits is the last stage of degradation of a religious tradition, which usually goes through the following stages:
- monotheism - Christianity, Judaism;
- polytheism - the religion of ancient Greece;
- magic and belief in spirits - shamanism of different traditions.
It may be noted that many religious traditions fail to distinguish between gods and spirits at all. In Hinduism, the gods are called devas, and their enemies, evil spirits, are called asuras.
But technically, both have similar powers and are practically equivalent to each other. At the same time, in Hinduism there is also a Supreme God, which creates confusion for an external observer.

Often evil spirits are gods who are no longer worshiped, their list is huge
Using the example of Slavic spirits, we can be convinced that “evil spirits” are simply those deities that are not pleasing to the dominant religion.
Here are just a few examples:
- demons - this word in antiquity was used to describe any spirit - good or evil. An angel is a good demon. But the Christianization of Rome entailed that the past religious tradition was simply declared evil without understanding it. Nowadays Christians call evil supernatural beings demons, which is wrong;
A demon is not an evil spirit, but various beings of a supernatural nature. In the ancient world, this was the name given to gods, for example, Mercury. Photo: upload.wikimedia.org
- Bacchus - aka Dionysus. Greek god of winemaking, vegetation, nature. He had goat-like features, like many gods of antiquity. These were positive symbols. Due to opposition to his temple in Pergamum, he is identified with the devil. From there Satan got horns and hooves;

- Asuras are the evil spirits of Hinduism. Enemies of the good gods. But if we move to Iran, everything will be the other way around. It turns out that the Indian gods are evil, and the asuras are benevolent to people;

- Lilith is the goddess of ancient Mesopotamia. Not much is known about her. But the Jews, trying to disown the gods of the people from which Abraham came, named Lilith a demon who drinks blood, kills children and seduces men;

- Astarte is another goddess of Mesopotamia. Her cult was associated with sexuality. The Jews, in order to break ties with this tradition, classified such ritual actions as sinful, calling them fornication;

- goblin - perhaps in the past the god of the ancient Slavs. The creature is positive, although not very friendly towards humans. Capable of making fun, intimidating, etc. Modern Orthodox Christians willingly classify goblin as evil forces only because the Bible says nothing about them. They call them devils, for which there is no reason;

- demons are supernatural beings in the religion of the ancient Slavs. They are hostile to humans and many other creatures and are capable of causing harm. It is completely wrong to identify any supernatural forces with them;

- devils is a new word that has no roots in ancient traditions. The conventional name for spirits that are negatively disposed towards a person. About their appearance, Christian sources unequivocally report only that they are “black as Ethiopians.”
This image from an old book shows that in Orthodoxy devils were depicted as black.
This is the only unborrowed feature of the appearance of evil spirits. At the same time, they clarified that they were “black as Ethiopians.” The roots of this comparison are unknown. Photo: pp.userapi.com The list of perfumes would not fit into a whole book.
It is important to understand the main principle here: most “evil spirits” are just misinterpreted foreign deities and beliefs. Sometimes this happens by accident, sometimes on purpose.

God allows the existence of evil spirits because He Himself created them for some reason.
Many Christians wonder why evil spirits are needed at all if they harm people and are disgusting to God. We will talk about harm to people later, but the Bible clearly tells us that there is no supernatural force hostile to the Lord under the leadership of Satan. This image was formed on the basis of an incorrect interpretation of the Bible and contradicts its text
Leo Taxil, the author of the infamous book “The Funny Bible for Adults and Children,” wrote best on this topic, where he rather soberly assessed the function of Satan:
“Where Satan is mentioned under modern names, he is far from being what Christian legends later made him out to be. The biblical devil is not at all an enemy of God: he is his obedient servant, his official angel.
In the Old Testament there is not even the possibility of the Devil acting in the spirit of modern Christian concepts. God rules everything, sending both good and evil. “Is there a disaster in a city that God would not allow?” (Amos 3:6), etc.
In the book of Job, Satan is directly portrayed as a simple servant of God. He easily visits God’s palaces: “And there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan: Where did you come from? (Job 1:6-7).
The following describes how Satan works under the good pleasure of God. And in other places in the Old Testament part of the Bible, Satan is mentioned in full accordance with the view of him as an obedient instrument of the will of God. For example, “an evil spirit from the Lord” is sent against Saul (1 Samuel 16:14).
In Zechariah, Satan also plays an almost auxiliary role, accusing “the great priest Jesus,” and God forbids him to do so (Zechariah 3:1-2).”

Evil forces do not oppose God, but carry out the tasks given by Him
In the New Testament episode with the possessed man, we see how a representative of evil forces addresses Jesus Christ:
“And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I conjure You by God, do not torment me! For Jesus said to him, “Come out, O unclean spirit, from this man.”
(Mark 5:7,8)
He asks the Messiah:
“And they asked Him many times, so that He would not send them out of that country. There was a large herd of pigs grazing there near the mountain. And all the demons besought Him, saying, Send us among the swine, that we may enter into them.”
(Mark 5:10-12)
And Jesus Christ fulfills his request! The Savior does not see in the spirit anything contrary to Himself, evil or unworthy. His conversation with the evil spirits is a respectful dialogue, and not a meeting of two opponents.
Therefore, we can definitely say that the Lord allows the works of evil forces according to His plan, for they fulfill the will of God.

Evil spirits help a person to see his mistakes in spiritual life
Christianity recognizes that an evil spirit can inhabit a person. It's called obsession. A lot has been said about these entities and their influence on people. But the main question is how to get rid of evil spirits.
Very often, priests recommend reprimanding, but Orthodox authorities warn against this practice. They even condemn her. Archpriest Dionisy Svechnikov says:
“Some people consider it a “cure for all diseases,” while others do not perceive it at all in the form in which it is practiced now. It is impossible to call reprimanding the only effective way to get rid of obsession.
The reason for the infusion of the fallen spirit into a person was sin, therefore it is sinfulness that needs to be treated, and not its consequence - obsession. A truly possessed person is not able to fully confess and then receive communion.
He needs help. Such help can be a reprimand, but this is not a panacea, but just one of the means that can be used by the Church to heal a person from possession by evil spirits.”
Dionisy Svechnikov

The consequences of initiatives with exorcism are well illustrated by the example of Anna-Elizabeth Michel, who, instead of treatment, was tortured by clergy who were trying to cast out demons from a sick woman.
Evil spirits should be fought by living a righteous life and only after being examined by a mental health specialist. And exorcism can lead to terrible outcomes.
The girl from this photo, Anna-Elizabeth Michel, died as a result of exorcism rituals performed on her, although she did not need them, but medical help. Photo: 4stor.ru
The only thing that evil spirits really fear is spiritual life. Sometimes strange situations happen when a righteous person is faced with the machinations of evil spirits.
However, such stories were found both in the Bible and in the lives of saints. In such cases, Orthodoxy considers this a test, a stage in the formation of a righteous person.
Orthodox authorities nevertheless note that the supernatural does not occur so often in people’s lives, and therefore, if possession is suspected, they recommend first consulting with a psychotherapy specialist in order to exclude the influence of possible diseases.
