Day in Orthodoxy. Signs and rituals on this day

The Orthodox today call it Dmitrievsky, and it has a centuries-old history. This day of remembrance of the dead was established at the initiative of Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy and with the blessing of St. Sergius of Radonezh.

Getting ready for the battle on the Kulikovo Field, Dmitry Donskoy was blessed to fight with foreigners by the abbot of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, Sergius of Radonezh. With the blessing of Sergius, two monks of the monastery - Alexander Peresvet and Andrei Oslyabya - joined the Donskoy army, who fell in battle and were then buried near the walls of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Old Simenov Monastery.

Donskoy, having defeated Mamai and returned from the battlefield, commemorated the Orthodox soldiers who died in the Battle of Kulikovo in the monastery, and invited the Church to perform commemoration annually on the Saturday before October 26, the day of remembrance of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica. The Grand Duke's proposal was accepted because the victory was stained with the blood of thousands of Orthodox soldiers - the loss of sons, husbands, fathers brought tears of grief and despair to families.

Initially, commemoration was performed for all Orthodox soldiers who died in this battle. Over the years, Dimitrievskaya Saturday has become a day of funeral remembrance not only for soldiers, but also for all deceased Orthodox Christians. Dimitrievskaya Saturday was always celebrated solemnly: the graves of relatives were visited, memorial services were served, funeral feasts were held, women remembered and lamented.

Autumn Grandfathers

Autumn Grandfathers or, as they also say in Belarus, Dzyady, is a holiday that is celebrated annually on November 2. Moreover, in Belarus this holiday is considered a national Day of Remembrance. On Autumn Grandfathers, it is customary for our neighbors to organize a home-made family lunch or dinner, at which, as Belarusians believe, their ancestors will come to visit them.

The tradition of honoring ancestors on Autumn Grandfathers has existed for a long time and this is not a purely Belarusian holiday, as is commonly believed. In fact, this is an echo of purely Slavic paganism, and in one form or another, the Autumn Grandfathers were welcomed both in Ukraine and in Russia. It has long been customary to prepare for this holiday with special care: cleaning the house, washing in the bathhouse. It is noteworthy that after visiting the bathhouse, they always left a bucket of clean water and a fresh broom for the souls of their ancestors for the holiday. At the same time, all the doors in the house remain open so that the ancestors can enter and sit at the table.

What church holiday is today: November 2, 2021

Sputnik Georgia tells who these Saints were and why they are mentioned in the church calendar.

Great Martyr Artemy

According to the church calendar, on November 2, the Great Martyr Artemy is commemorated, one of the outstanding military leaders during the reign of Constantine the Great (306-337) and his son Constantius (337-361).

Artemy, who had many awards for excellent service and courage, was appointed governor of Egypt, where he did a lot to spread and strengthen Christianity. Having replaced Constantius on the throne, Julian the Apostate (361-363), wanting to return paganism, waged a fierce struggle against Christianity, sending hundreds of Christians to death.

In Antioch, Julian ordered the torture of two bishops who did not want to renounce. The Great Martyr, having arrived in the city at that time, accused the emperor of impiety. The angry Apostate ordered the Saint to be brutally tortured, forcing him to renounce.

The ascetic, who endured torture without a single groan, predicted to Julian that he would soon be overtaken by retribution for the evil done to Christians. By order of the emperor, the head of the great martyr was cut off. This happened in 362.

Gabriel of Samtavria

According to the church calendar, on November 2, St. Gabriel of Samtavria is commemorated, in the world of Goderdzi Urgebadze.

The future reverend confessor was born in Tbilisi in 1929. Having believed in childhood, he strove for monasticism from a young age and took monastic vows at the age of 26 with the name Gabriel, in honor of the Athonite elder who walked on the water and brought to the shore the icon of the Mother of God, called Iverskaya, that sailed across the sea.

Live in such a way that you are loved not only by God, but also by people - Gabriel's story

Later, the monk said that “there is no greater heroism than monasticism” and especially revered the miraculous list of Iverskaya, kept in the Samtavro monastery in Mtskheta.

In the courtyard of his house in Tbilisi, Father Gabriel built a multi-domed church with his own hands, and found icons for the temple in city dumps, where in those years numerous shrines were thrown away along with garbage.

Hieromonk Gabriel, during a demonstration on May 1, 1965, burned a 12-meter portrait of Lenin, hung on the building of the Supreme Council of the Georgian SSR, and began to preach to those gathered. The monk was severely beaten and, half dead, with many fractures, was taken to the KGB detention center, where he was sentenced to death.

The reverend was saved from execution by the fact that the story of the burning of the leader’s portrait spread in the foreign press. The monk was placed in a psychiatric hospital and declared insane.

The monk's misadventures did not stop there. He was forbidden to serve and receive communion; he was not even allowed on the threshold of the church. This became the most difficult test for Father Gabriel.

Since the 80s, Father Gabriel lived at the Samtavro convent in Mtskheta, collected alms on the streets of Tbilisi and distributed everything to the poor. The monk possessed the gift of prophecy. Many believers came to him for advice and prayerful help.
