Kung Fu: a word with a special meaning and an interesting history

Purpose and form

Fu dogs, as a talisman, perform the functions of protecting the home from negative and hostile emotions, and also protect a favorable atmosphere in the home. Fu dogs always act in pairs. A male dog represents the masculine yang energy, and a female dog represents the feminine yin energy. They can protect the home and its inhabitants, being both inside the house and outside, at the main entrance. If they are called upon to protect a work office, they can reflect negative influences on the conduct of business. For example, preventing bankruptcy.

Fu Dog

Externally, Fu dogs are very similar to lions. No wonder they are also called Buddha's lions. The fact that these are still dogs is evidenced by protruding ears.

Both dogs are always depicted standing on three legs. The male's right front paw covers the ball. It is believed that this is not just a ball, but an allegory of the entire globe. This symbolizes fatherly control over external circumstances and the ability to prevent everything bad. The female mother covers her baby with her left paw, showing her desire to protect the inhabitants of the house and create favorable conditions in it.

The size and material from which Foo dogs are made matter. If they are installed on the street for external security of the house, then it is better to make them large from concrete, stone or metal. Let the appearance be formidable or even intimidating. Let the dogs indoors be small in size and more good-natured in appearance. It is better to make them from pleasant materials - glass, porcelain or ceramics.

For now

Currently, feng shui experts believe that the male Fu dog presses his paw to the ground not just a ball, but an ordinary symbol of our land. It also personifies the positive energy of Yang, symbolizing power and bestowing success in business. The female is a manifestation of Yin energy. She protects the home, the family, and presses the cub to the ground. All Fu dogs are housed only in pairs, which simply makes it possible to distinguish males from females. And there are certain location rules that need to be followed:

It is forbidden:

  • If something goes wrong with one of the dogs, you can only change the pair, but not one of them.
  • They should not be placed in the bedroom.

The laws of Feng Shui say that the correct implementation of these talismans makes them a powerful tool for protecting your home well-being. If they were used reign, then it was really like that. And at the moment, any of us has the opportunity to do the same by installing two cute Fu dogs at the exit of the house.

Many, apparently, noticed that the entrances to some houses were very popular with figurines of dogs. Non-aggressive and friendly animals at first glance, they invite guests to enter the domain of their owners.

Fu dogs as a talisman of protection appeared in Ancient China in the 3rd century BC. e. Along with the religion of Buddhism came protective talismans in the form of lions. But the king of beasts is an uncharacteristic animal for China. Gradually his image transformed into a more familiar dog. But in fact, this is a kind of hybrid: from a lion, the animal has a curly mane, and from a dog, it has erect ears.

The Chinese dog Fu initially guarded only the emperor, his palace and family. There were six pairs of these animals in the imperial palace. It was forbidden for anyone else to have their images and use them as protectors. Gradually, this ban weakened, and Fu dogs appeared in the houses of the emperor's associates and noble dignitaries. They not only protected the peace of the nobles, but also demonstrated that the owners belonged to the elite class.

Today anyone can purchase these protectors. But they still symbolize a hint of the elevated status of their owners.

About Fu dogs

Such curious dogs, despite their unusual appearance, are considered not just a beautiful talisman, but also a very strong amulet and protection for the home. It is easy to notice, looking at them, that they are very reminiscent of the king of beasts, and therefore their second name is the heavenly lions of Buddha. As Feng Shui says, Fu dogs are always associated in pairs, and only together do they form a single whole - the unity of the energies of Yin and Yang.

The male personifies the masculine principle in himself, who presses the ball to the ground, which represents our Earth. The responsibilities of a male dog include the following qualities:

Empowering a household member; - success in financial affairs; - authority. But the female Fu must protect the health of the inhabitants and maintain comfort in the family. She presses her cub to the Earth, as if saying that she can protect him from all evil thoughts and adversity.

Where and how to place it?

  1. If Fu figures are installed outside the house, then they should be located at the entrance, on both sides of it. They can face outwards, reflecting negative energy from the house, or be directed towards each other, guarding the entrance and controlling visitors. Anyone entering the house should see a female on his left and a male on his right.
  2. If the entrance is located on the south side of the building, then according to Feng Shui it is recommended to install dog figures made of metal there.
  3. Animals inside the house look at the entrance to the outside world - a door or window. If the owners leave their home for a long time, it is useful to install dog figures near the door so that they reliably protect the entrance to it.
  4. It is better not to allow threatening-looking dogs inside the house; let them be vigilant outside. There should be outwardly good-natured defenders in the house. The main thing is that the owners should like the figures. And for unwanted visitors they will still be formidable opponents.
  5. Dogs placed in the family area will protect and maintain peace and order in it. In the wealth zone, they protect the wealth of the owners of the house.

What does the word kung fu mean?

A direct translation of the word kung fu, in transcription you can find gong fu and even kung fu, and the original 功夫 means “skill.” It applies equally to masters of fist fighting and to any other type of activity that involves the emergence of real masters of their craft. In Chinese philosophy, Master with a capital letter is a special title. For Europeans, he became a man who “knew the kung fu” of his craft.

The word kung fu came to us, among other things, from American action films, and then from the works of early European martial arts researchers. Accordingly, this eastern term went through two translations into English transcription, and then into domestic one. So today no one can vouch for the correctness of its sound and meaning. But due to such popularity in cinema, kung fu sections began to form in all countries, including Russia, in which wushu masters often acted as teachers.

Now it becomes clear why in China itself, kungfu is rarely used in relation to martial arts training. In all the provinces of this country, excluding those who speak Cantonese, there is another word for martial arts - chuan-shu. This is the art of fist fighting. And here we can easily throw a bridge to wushu 武术, which essentially translates as “the art of combat.”

Thus, we can assume that the word kung fu, essentially meaning a school of martial arts, is essentially identical in meaning to a European person with wushu. But since Wushu is broader, more versatile and has deeper roots, it is more often used in the modern sports world.

Kung Fu and Wushu styles

Over the course of its centuries-old history, martial arts have given rise to a lot of styles, of which only dozens have survived to this day. They arose in some way territorially. Therefore, one of the most commonly used classifications of these styles is by part of China, northern and southern. But from a technical point of view, often some native northern styles can almost repeat the southern ones. Which greatly confuses researchers.

Three monasteries

The second attempt to classify the motley palette of martial arts is to identify the three main centers of their foundation. Shaolin, Wudang and Emei were chosen as such points. All these monasteries and temples are Buddhist and very ancient. For example, the world famous Shaolin Monastery was founded around 495 BC. Its first leader is the Indian monk Batuo. It is very interesting that his first idea was not to teach how to fight, but simply to strengthen the body of his followers. Apparently, according to the principle “a healthy mind in a healthy body.” His system of exercises, “Eighteen Hands of Lohan,” was precisely supposed to strengthen the monks, giving them strength for spiritual improvement.

Three rivers

A variation of the territorial classification, taking into account origin and distribution, was undertaken around 1909. It was used by the Jingyu Association, which is considered the first to attempt to bring Wushu to some kind of systematization and careful study. The essence of their theory is that the masters moved along the river valleys: Yellow River, Yangtze, Zhujiang. This is very typical of that world. In ancient Rus', for example, pottery, painting and other folk arts spread in a similar way.

There have been many other attempts to classify styles and schools of kung fu. But all of them are doomed to failure in one way or another. The fact is that any style that develops independently for about a hundred years inevitably acquires a certain set of movements, special blows that the founding master did not include in his teaching. All styles have one thing in common. Kung fu classes not only have the goal of learning how to fight, but above all they strengthen the body of the follower.

Appearance

Fu is introduced as a young, tanned girl (with slightly darker skin in the anime) who wears an orange clip in her short hair, which is a rare light green shade that matches the color of her amber eyes. She was wearing a white sleeveless short shirt that did not hide her belly. Underneath, Fu wore mesh armor. On the arms were long white armlets, and on the legs were mesh shorts under a white skirt with slits on the sides. Her protector was attached to her right arm. Fu also carried a cylindrical object in a red bag, the purpose of which is unknown. Subsequently, already being part of Pain Rikudo Tobi, Fu became the owner of the Rinnegan in her left eye and the Sharingan in her right. The sclera of the last of the Dojutsu acquired a dark tint - a distinctive feature of all revived Yakushi Kabuto shinobi.
