Childhood, adolescence, monasticism

Andrei Rublev was born in the 60s of the 14th century; the exact place of birth is also unknown. According to some sources, he was born in the town of Radonezh, located next to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, according to others - in Nizhny Novgorod. His father was a craftsman, as can be judged by his last name, because in those days a ruble was called a tool for working with leather. According to some sources, in his youth he became a novice of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, and then a monk, receiving the name Andrei upon tonsure (his exact name is unknown).

The biography of icon painter Andrei Rublev originates within these walls, where he begins to learn the art of icon painting and studies the works on philosophy of Sergius of Radonezh, the founder of the monastery. There, visiting the monastery library, he carefully and with great zeal studies the works of the masters and artists of antiquity who painted icons.

The end of the 14th century became a difficult time for the Russian state: in 1364-1366 the plague raged in Moscow, and in 1365 there was a fire that destroyed almost the entire city. Then, in 1371, Moscow was besieged by Prince Olgerd, after which famine came to these lands.

Interesting facts from life

  1. Some suggest that the creator depicted Sergius of Radonezh in some of his works, as he saw him.
  2. He was closely acquainted with the students of Sergius of Radonezh.
  3. There is an opinion that the surname Rublev comes from the word “rubel” (tool), so we can assume that the icon painter belonged to a family of artisans.
  4. It is possible that in the Annunciation Cathedral there is a self-portrait of Rublev in the image of Judas Iscariot.
  5. Historians believe that Rublev created miniatures for the Khitrov Gospel.

The beginning of a creative journey

In the biography of Andrei Rublev, creativity and his first works as an artist are mentioned for the first time in 1405, when he, having moved to Moscow, together with Theophan the Greek, began painting the Annunciation Cathedral. The fate of the cathedral was tragic: 9 years later it was destroyed and then rebuilt several times. But some works were miraculously preserved: these are 2 tiers of the iconostasis, in which there are 7 icons made by Andrei Rublev, and 6 by Elder Prokhor of Gorodets, a famous master of icon painting of those times.

Already in these works, the hand of the master is noticeable, freer and lighter compared to Elder Prokhor, but already highly professional. This series of holiday icons is the first in Rus': “Annunciation”, “Nativity of Christ”, “Baptism”, “Transfiguration”, etc.

During these years, Rublev also painted an icon-copy of “The Mother of God of Vladimir” from a famous Byzantine image, as well as a drawing from the book “The Gospel of Khitrovo”, which received its name from the name of the boyar, in whose belongings it was found in the 17th century. According to art historians, this manuscript, which has no value, in those years could only have been created with the money of either the Metropolitan of Rus' or one of the great princes.

Murals of the Vladimir Assumption Cathedral

The following reliable facts from the biography of Andrei Rublev speak of his mention as an artist and occur in May 1408, when the Moscow prince ordered new frescoes to be painted on the site of the lost 12th-century paintings in the Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir. Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny came here at the invitation of the prince to do wall paintings, and Rublev was still working on several icons, including with his students. These works are now exhibited at the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.

The frescoes on the western wall of the Vladimir Cathedral, which have survived to this day, are parts of the large composition “The Last Judgment”. It clearly identifies images belonging to the hand of A. Rublev, which have an unusual and strong emotional mood. In the figures of an angel with a trumpet, the Apostle Peter and the court scenes themselves, there are no emotions of fear of heavenly punishments, but an enlightened mood and the idea of forgiveness rise.

Icons in Zvenigorod

In 1918, in the town of Zvenigorod near Moscow, 3 icons dating back to 1410 were discovered in an old wooden barn. According to some sources, they were painted for the iconostasis of a local church, but according to the conclusion of modern researchers, none of the churches are suitable in size. Conventionally, they were called “Zvenigorod Chin”, “Apostle Michael”, “Savior”, “Apostle Paul”, and, undoubtedly, they can belong exclusively to the hand of A. Rublev.

These icons in the biography of Andrei Rublev became a new confirmation of his talent, capable of collecting into a single whole and subordinating lilac-pink-blue colors into complete harmony, which remained unique for several centuries. Bright moods as the completion of Rublev’s creative quest were embodied in the various images of these creations, in which the master of icon painting summarized various thoughts about the moral values of each person belonging to his contemporaries.

Art historians consider the “Savior” icon to be the most interesting, although it is very poorly preserved, but the face of Jesus Christ, endowed with Slavic features, is clearly visible. Christ looks attentively with a very calm, penetrating gaze. His whole appearance is filled with energy, attention and benevolence.

In the icon “Archangel Michael” the artist sang the lyrical reflections and thoughts of the poet. Although the angel is a heavenly and not a physical creature, Rublev embodied in him all the earthly beauty of man. The Apostle Paul is depicted by the icon painter as a philosopher-thinker, painted in a soft gray-lilac color scheme with blue tones.

Murals of the Holy Trinity Cathedral

At this time, the Tatar Khan Edygei gathered an army and marched on Moscow, which he could not take. However, along the way, the Tatars set fire to many settlements and cities, and were unable to save the Trinity Monastery, where Abbot Nikon served during these years. In subsequent years, Nikon made every effort to restore the monastery, and in 1424 he took on the construction of a white stone church, to which D. Cherny and A. Rublev were invited to create paintings. All works in this temple are dated 1425-1427.

At the same time, the most famous icon in the biography of Andrei Rublev, “Trinity,” was painted. It was part of the iconostasis of the Trinity Cathedral in Sergiev Posad and is considered the most artistically perfect among the icon paintings of that time. The artist reflected in it the concept of the Orthodox religion about the trinity of God.

The history of the discovery of this icon is very interesting: for several centuries it was on public display, but it was not noticed. It so happened that in 1575, Tsar Ivan the Terrible ordered it to be covered with a frame of gold, and only faces, feet and hands were visible. Then, in 1600, Boris Godunov changed the salary to a new, even more luxurious one. During replacement, the icon was covered with drying oil for preservation, which made the colors brighter. Over time, the outer layer began to darken, soot from candles settled on it, and smoke from incense entered it. To make the icon look better, it was constantly updated by applying layers of paint on top along the contours of the design, and then again covered with drying oil. Most likely, the icon would have perished over time if not for chance. At the beginning of the 20th century, restorers scraped off the upper layers with a scalpel, and the beautiful creation of the great icon painter was revealed to their eyes.

Among the frescoes of the Trinity Cathedral that have survived to this day, according to art historians, the hand of A. Rublev includes “Baptism”, “Archangel Michael” and “Apostle Paul”. In color and depth of content, in beauty and color scheme, they resemble the “Trinity”.

Sports career

Junior period

Andrey Rublev started performing on the ITF junior tour in 2011. Already at his second tournament, held in Mauritius, he managed to get his first gold. However, the athlete was able to make a loud statement about himself only at the end of 2012. Thus, in December he won the prestigious Orange Bowl junior competition (in the age category up to 16 years), managing to beat his 15-year-old rival Tommy Paul from America.

The following year, 2013, Rublev became the best at the junior tournament held in the spring in South Africa, and in the summer of the same year he won gold at the European tournament among juniors under 16 years old.

At the beginning of 2014, the athlete reached the quarter finals at the Australian Open in Melbourne. And the 2014 French Open Junior Championship already brought a number of confident victories to the future champion. First, in one second of the finals, he beat the Brazilian athlete Orlando Luz, after which in the final he left behind his opponent from Spain, Jaume Munar, in two sets.

This gave him the opportunity to become the first Russian tennis leader at Roland Garros and lead the ITF junior rankings.

The 2014 summer Olympics, held in Nanjing, China, brought Rublev 3rd place in singles and 2nd in pairs with Karen Khachanov. The next significant achievement in his career was winning competitions in England.

A little later, at Wimbledon, Rublev, in a duet with American Stefan Kozlov, reached the final of the doubles competition. At the end of 2014, the guy received the Russian Cup award in the Junior of the Year category. Rublev finished 2014 leading the ITF youth chart. He played his last junior championship in April 2015.

Adult career

Andrei Rublev began to try his hand at adult competitions in his junior years. Thus, at the age of 15, the athlete played his first big tournament at the Futures series competitions, held in July 2013 in Bulgaria. A month later, he made it to the futures final in Minsk, but disappointingly lost to the 20-year-old athlete from Belarus Egor Gerasimov.

Rublev overcame the first “futures” in his sports career in November 2013 in Bradenton. Next was the “futures” in Aktobe, in March 2014. Two months later, the guy won his first doubles victory at the adult level (“futures” in Teplice). This was followed by a cup at the “futures” in Moscow.

And in September of the same year, the tennis player first received an invitation to play for the senior Russian national team in the Davis Cup qualifying matches. A month later, at the Kremlin Cup, where he received a wildcard, the athlete entered the ATP main draw for the first time. However, almost from the start he lost to the Australian tennis player Sam Groth. At the end of 2014, the athlete took another “futures” in the Dominican Republic.

Season 2015

It was in 2015 that Rublev began to regularly take part in competitions in the main ATP series. February 2015 was remembered for good sporting achievements. At the beginning of the month, Andrei took his first cup in the Challenger series tournaments. Then, at the cup in Dallas, paired with the Ukrainian athlete Denis Molchanov, he left his rivals far behind.

At the next ATP in Florida, he beat No. 90 in the ranking Dudi Selu in the first stage, but then lost to Steve Johnson. March brought the athlete a victory in 3 sets over No. 54 Pablo Carreno Busta, as well as a loss to No. 24, American John Isner.

In April, the guy beat an athlete from the top 50 of the world list for the first time: at the ATP 500, held in Spain, after successfully completing qualifying matches, he defeated Fernando Verdasco (No. 37 at that time) in the first stage. But already in the 2nd period he lost the championship to Fabio Fognini (No. 30).

At the competition in Geneva, held in May 2015, where the tennis player received a special invitation, he beat the 33-year-old Finnish athlete Jarkko Nieminen in the first stage. Thanks to this achievement, Andrei became the first seventeen-year-old tennis player in 11 years to win at least 5 matches at different ATP series championships. Before this, only Rafael Nadal in 2004 could boast of such a result.

In the summer of 2015, Rublev failed to qualify for the main draw of Wimbledon: in the first round of qualifying matches, he left behind the athlete from Slovakia Josef Kovalik, but then he was defeated by the Croatian Ivan Dodig. At the end of the qualifying matches at Wimbledon, Rublev climbed into the top two hundred for the first time.

July brought the Russian his second victory in the year at the Challenger in doubles.

A little later, the athlete took part in the Davis Cup qualifying games in Vladivostok: the Russian team won with a score of 3-2. The first day of play was a disaster for Rublev - he lost to Tommy Robredo. But already on the third day he won a landslide victory over Pablo Andujar.

This was followed by losses at competitions in Umag and Gstaad already at the initial stage. The most offensive thing is that Rublev lost to players not even from the top 100. At the Challenger in the USA, held in mid-August, the Russian lost to the more experienced Tommy Haas from the States.

At the end of the month, the athlete qualified for the main draw of the adult Grand Slam for the first time. In the US Open qualifying matches, Andrei first defeated the Japanese, and then over the German Peter Gojowczyk. The match at the first stage of the main draw ended in Rublev's defeat in four sets from world No. 14 Kevin Anderson.

September was not very successful for the tennis player. So, first, in the Davis Cup match held in Irkutsk, the Russian could not beat Fabio Fognini, and then, at the tournament in St. Petersburg, where he received a wild card, he lost to the Italian tennis player Simone Bolelli. However, in doubles, Andrei, in tandem with Mikhail Youzhny, managed to reach the semi-finals.

In October, the now-adult athlete qualified for the ATP doubles tournament for the first time in his career. He and his 32-year-old partner Dmitry Tursunov received a wild card for the Kremlin Cup. Their opponents at the first stage withdrew from the race, abandoning the game. After which the athletes were able to win three matches, including the final match.

At the next Kremlin Cup, Andrei, who went straight into the main draw by wildcard, lost in singles to Kazakhstani tennis player Mikhail Kukushkin at the start.

The tournament in Valencia, Spain, brought the athlete first a victory over Marcel Granollers, and then a defeat against Roberto Bautiste-Aguto. Andrei ended the outgoing year with defeats in tournaments in Germany and Slovakia, both in singles (to tennis player Lukas Lacko) and in doubles.

Season 2021

2016 began for Rublev with a tournament in Chennai (India). On the first lap he managed to pass Somdev Devvarman. However, the Russian then faced a defeat from Stan Wawrinka, the 4th racket in the world. Let us note that this was the first fight in his record with a player from the TOP 10.

The end of winter was not very successful for the young athlete - he was able to win only 1 out of 5 competitions. At the end of winter, Rublev will start in the Challenger in Quimper from the 2nd stage of qualifying. He managed to win 6 times in a row, beating Paul-Henri Mathieu in the final match and winning his first single gold in his sports career at the Challenger tournaments.

At the Indian Wells Masters in March 2021, in qualifying matches, Rublev first won his second victory in a year over Somdev Devvarman, and then lost to the experienced German tennis player Michael Berrer. The Masters in Miami and Monte Carlo, held in the spring, ended for Andrey with elimination at the first stage - in Monte Carlo he faced a crushing defeat from the promising German tennis player Alexander Zverev.

The May dirt “challengers”, held in Germany and Italy, brought losses already in the first games. At the French Open, the Russian confidently defeated Jan Satral at the first stage of the qualifying competition, and at the next stage he could not beat Jan-Lennard Struff from Germany.

Then there was a loss at the 2nd stage at the Challenger in Moscow, and then at the qualifying matches of the ATP 250 tournament in Hull. At Wimbledon, Andrei won a victory over the American Alexander Sargsyan at the first stage of qualifying, but then he lost to the Briton Marcus Willis. At the Davis Cup match, held in July in Moscow, Andrei managed to beat Robin Hase. This is followed by a series of failures on the Challengers.

US Open 2021 ended for Rublev already at the first stage of qualifying matches, where he lost to Miljan Zekic. The end of the year was also marked by a series of losses for the athlete: at the championship in St. Petersburg (to Joao Sousa from Portugal), in the 1/2 finals of the tournament in Orleans, in the first round of qualifying competitions for the Kremlin Cup, and then at the challenger in Budapest. In the final tournament of the season in France, Rublev managed to reach the final, but the victory went to his opponent, the Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

2017

Andrey opened this season with a series of fights at the Australian Open. Successfully qualified and made it into the main draw. The first round ended with a victory in four sets over Lu Yanxun. However, at the second stage he was defeated by world ranking leader Andy Murray.

The end of January was marked by a defeat at the competition in Rennes in the decisive final set - then Belarusian Vladimir Ignatyuk won. At the Masters Tournament, the athlete encountered difficulties already in the first qualifying round - then he lost to the beginning tennis player from Australia, Andrew Whittington. The next “challenger”, held in Irving, was much more successful for Andrey - then he managed to qualify and get into the semi-finals, but Aljaz Bedene from Slovenia won it.

Rublev approached participation in the French Open with winnings in only two matches in 5 tournaments. And he was defeated already at the first stage. The fight with Argentinean Diego Schwartzman was very intense - the first 5-set match in the Russian’s career lasted about 4 hours.

At the competition in Hull, for the first time in his sports career, Rublev was the best in 2 matches of the main draw of an ATP tour tournament. This allowed him to enter the first hundred of the world TOP.

At the ATP 500, held in Beijing in the fall, Rublev managed to reach the quarter finals, which ended in his defeat to Sasha Zverev. The final event for Andrey in 2021 was the Next Generation ATP Finals. The 8 best athletes under the age of 21 were allowed to participate in it. The Russian did not manage to take first place then - in the final he suffered his third defeat of the year from Chung Hyun. Season 2021 At the end of the year, Andrey took 39th place in the ranking.

Season 2021

Rublev opened the new season by participating in competitions in Doha, which ended for him with a loss in the final to Gael Monfils. At competitions in Montpellier and Rotterdam, the athlete reached the quarterfinals. However, this was followed by a series of unsuccessful performances at three competitions in a row with elimination at the first stage. The losses in singles were partially offset by results in doubles at the Masters in Miami.

In the match of the Russian national team against Austria at the Davis Cup, Rublev did not perform very convincingly, failing to take the championship in either singles or doubles.

A little later, the athlete injured his back, as a result of which he fell out of action for three months and missed a number of championships, including Wimbledon and Roland Garros. After recovery, Rublev performed in Umag in July, but was eliminated in one quarter of the final.

The Cup in Vienna brought the Russian a defeat in the qualifying match to Mikhail Kukushkin. But this did not prevent the athlete from getting into the main draw as a “Lucky loser”. Interestingly, Rublev met Kukushkin again in the second round of the main draw. And again Andrey failed to win.

Despite a series of failures, the tennis player took part in the “Next Generation” tournament for the 2nd year in a row. Like the previous time, he failed to win. At the end of the 2021 season, he was in 68th place in the top.

Season 2021

At the beginning of the season at the Australian Open, Rublev lost to American Mackenzie McDonald. At the tournament in Marseille, he managed to get into one fourth of the finals. A series of losing performances, as well as missing a number of tournaments, led to a drop in his position in the ranking to players in the 2nd hundred.

In April, the athlete injured his wrist and was forced to miss more than two months. At Wimbledon in July, Rublev managed to reach the second stage, but then he lost to Sam Querrey from America.

At the ATP 500 in Germany, the Russian made it to the final, but Nikoloz Basilashvili was stronger in it. The result of the match allowed the Russian tennis player to once again break into the top fifty.

Rublev managed to make up for his loss in Germany at the Masters 1000 in Ohio. Then there was a victory in the match with Stan Wawrinka, and then No. 3 Roger Federer lost the palm. However, in the quarterfinals his opponent and compatriot Daniil Medvedev was stronger.

Autumn brought the athlete another defeat from Danil Medvedev in St. Petersburg. But at the Kremlin Cup, for the first time in two years, he managed to take the ATP title. Andrey finished the 2021 season 23rd in the world TOP.

2020

This season started more than successfully for Andrey. First, he took the 3rd cup in his career at the tournament in Doha, which gave him the opportunity to enter the top 20 for the first time. This was followed by winning the 4th singles title in his career and the 2nd in a year at the match in Adelaide. All these achievements allowed the athlete to firmly gain a foothold in the top twenty of the world TOP and become No. 2 in the Russian Federation.

Roland Garros brought the tennis player a win in the main draw for the first time. This achievement raised him to the top 10. At the next competition in Vienna, Andrei won his 5th cup of the season and 7th of his career.

The tennis player finished 2021 in 8th place in the global top. This achievement became the most significant in his entire career - 41 victories and 5 titles brought him to the top of the tour, and Andrei managed to surpass the leader of the world ranking, Novak Djokovic, in these parameters.

2021

The new season began for Andrey with a series of games for the Russian national team in the APR. Together with other athletes, he won both single matches and ensured the best result for the team itself.

The Australian Open brought Andrey another loss to Russian Danil Medvedev in one quarter of the final. However, at the next ATP-500 in Rotterdam, the athlete won gold - the 3rd in a row in this category.

The next competition was in Doha. It is interesting that the tennis player made it to one second of the finals without even playing a single match. He missed the first stage due to his high rating, and then Richard Gasquet and Marton Fucsovics refused to take the court. In the semi-finals, Andrey lost to Roberto Bautista Agut.

Last work

At the end of the 1420s, having completed work in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the icon painter’s long-time friend and comrade-in-arms, Daniil Cherny, died and was buried here. After this, A. Rublev returned to Moscow to work on the paintings of the Spassky Cathedral in the Andronikov Monastery, which he managed to complete in 1428. According to some reports, he also took part in its construction. This work was the last in the biography of Andrei Rublev.

The famous painter died in 1428 in Moscow during a plague epidemic and was buried near the bell tower of the Andronikov Monastery. In 1988, the year of the millennium of the baptism of Rus', he was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Film about Andrei Rublev

There are still many black spots in the biography of Andrei Rublev. In fact, very little is known about him, except two mentions in historical sources. Researchers even date the painting of his famous Trinity icon to two different years: 1411 or 1425-1427.

One of the ways to tell the world about this talented person, about the era in which he lived, about his creative searches and development as an artist was a narrative film made in the 60s of the 20th century by the famous director A. Tarkovsky. In several short stories, the film paints pictures of medieval Rus', briefly tells about the biography of Andrei Rublev, about his worldviews and doubts, about his vow of silence, which he observed for 15 years, and other interesting facts from the life of the icon painter.
