Avraamiy Smolensky

(1172[1] or 1150[2] - 1221[2][3] and 1224[1]) - Russian Orthodox saint, reverend. The memory takes place on August 21 (September 3).

After the death of his parents, Abraham took monastic vows at the Assumption Monastery in Selishche near Smolensk (now Bogoroditskoye). Ordained a priest, he preached successfully; Many people flocked to his sermons, since he was not only very well read, but was “cunning... not only in reading, but in interpreting.” After the abbot of the monastery forbade him to preach, Abraham was forced to retire to the poor Smolensk Holy Cross Monastery on Pokrovskaya Mountain. Soon, through his efforts, the monastery was brought into a more flourishing state, decorated with new icons (possibly letters from Abraham himself), which gave rise to envy on the part of a large part of the clergy of Smolensk. He was subjected to a public trial by Bishop Ignatius[4] and, despite the prince’s acquittal, was banned from ministry.

The Life tells that the exiled Abraham performed a miracle, causing rain after a drought (c. 1218-1220). This miracle, as well as the death of many of Abraham's opponents, led to his return to Smolensk as abbot of the Robe Monastery, which later received his name - the Abraham Monastery. He died before 1224, having lived as a monk for about half a century.

“Life” also reports about his painting of the icons “The Last Judgment of the Second Coming” and “Image of the ordeals that the soul goes through after death.”

The Lives of Abraham, known from lists of the 16th-17th centuries, are among the most interesting in terms of the data they contain and the literary form[3].

Canonized at the Makaryevsky Cathedral in 1549.
