Akathist of repentance, or songs that bring a person to the consciousness of his sinfulness

In moments of joy and sorrow, a Christian believer turns to God with gratitude and prayer. On special occasions, when there is a need to cleanse the soul, an akathist of repentance is sung to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Mother of God and other saints. Hymns of praise can be heard in church and at home, performed by the believer himself. You can also listen to it performed by monks in a recording via the Internet.

Prayers to God for help in life.

How to read the akathist correctly

Akathists are not obligatory to perform during the Divine Service. They can be read during the morning service, both on holidays and ordinary days. Only the singing of praise to the Mother of God has a clear connection to the date.

If desired, the akathist can be performed at home. The believer must have certain preparation, not only fully know the content of all 25 texts, but also know the rules of chanting.

A Christian must stand in front of icons. Candles or lamps are lit immediately and are not extinguished upon completion. It is advisable to start by reading the morning rule. Then, in front of the image of the Holy Trinity or Jesus Christ, verses are sung while standing. The last word is repeated three times.

The final, thirteenth kontakion is performed kneeling three times. Then Kodak 1 and Ikos 1 should be repeated. “Amen” is repeated three times.

After the singing of praise, while standing, the prayer “Lord, Lord, behold I stand…” or two prayers to the Holy Trinity, composed specifically for this ritual, are read.

The greatest effect is achieved with the participation of all family members. Small children and the infirm are allowed to sit and even lie down during the ceremony. They can mentally repeat words without saying them out loud.

Saint Andrew of Crete was born in the Syrian city of Damascus in the middle of the 7th century.

Quite little is known about Andrey's life. Saint Andrew was born in the Syrian city of Damascus. The date of his birth is unknown, but it is approximately the first half or middle of the 7th century.

Until the age of 7, the boy was mute, but later he was healed by Divine power after he received the Holy Mysteries of Christ. This left a very strong mark on the child, so he devoted his future life to serving God.

In the Jerusalem Monastery of Saint Sava the Consecrated, Saint Andrew studies the Holy Scriptures.

At the age of 14-15, Saint Andrew decided to retire to the Jerusalem Monastery of Saint Sava the Sanctified in order to get rid of the vanity of the world. Here he begins to deeply study the Holy Scriptures.

For his good work, he was appointed to the position of clerk at the court of Fyodor, the leaders of the Jerusalem Patriarchate. But even this position did not prevent him from pursuing his salvation and leading an ascetic life.

Jerusalem Monastery of Saint Sava the Consecrated. It was here that Andrei Kritsky came to get rid of the bustle of the world

An important stage in his life was his participation in the work of the Fourth Ecumenical Council, which was convened in order to counter the heresy of the Monothelites. Andrei arrived there along with other trusted representatives.

When he returned back to Jerusalem, he brought with him a list of conciliar definitions. A little later, Andrei Kritsky was ordained a deacon of the Sofia Church. He arrived in Constantinople at the invitation of the Patriarch.

Prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of Sinners

During the reign of Justinian II, Andrei was consecrated archbishop

During the reign of Justinian II, Andrei was awarded archbishop consecration. In this position he took up quite a lot of time and effort. With his blessing, new temples were built. Almshouses and shelters were organized.

With his prayers to God, he became famous as a great man of prayer. One day he prayed for the city of Drumeos when it was besieged by the Saracens. It was through his prayers that the enemies shamefully retreated. There were also cases when Andrei prayed during a drought, and through his prayer, the soil was poured with rain.

With his prayers to God, Andrei Kritsky became famous as a great prayer book

Various dates of death are attributed to the Archbishop of Crete. They said that he lived to a ripe old age. One day he went to Constantinople for church reasons. On the way, he became very ill and died.

There was evidence that this happened in 712, but other sources claim that it was in 740. It was also rumored that the saint already knew about his death in advance.

There are quite a few churches of St. Andrew of Crete. For example, in St. Petersburg, in Rostov-on-Don.

Canon of repentance to the Lord

Song 1

Irmos: As before the people of Israel/the Red Sea parted,/like an obedient lamb,/the water turned to dry land,/so to the Russian people,/Lord, I pray to Thee: now appear for salvation.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

With my heart poured out in prayer, I weep, Lord, for the souls of the Russian people, now weakened by a cold retreat, caught in the devil’s snare, rejected by repentance, Lord, heed my prayer.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

You, Lord, have given us vast expanses, dense forests and rivers of water, abundant waters, victorious battles. Forgive us, O Lord, who are ungrateful, as we have walked and run away from Thy Law.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

Our fathers established the Orthodox faith, received baptism on the waters of the Dnieper, chose salvation on the cross, but we have thrown the Covenant into dust, forgive us, Lord, we have rejected Your Law.

Glory:

Russian people, Lord, today in a shameful retreat, we have forgotten the faith of our fathers, we are consoled by earthly blessings in lies, we worship mortal idols, like apostate Jews, madly turning away from Your Law.

And now:

The Mother of God, the Christian Intercessor, the Shelter of boundless kindness, You have glorified Rus' with Your inheritances, showing the way as a saint of God, and fleeing our people from the Law of Your Beloved Son.

Song 3

Irmos: All-merciful Lord,/My joy of repentance,/You are not Holy, as You are my Most Generous Savior/have mercy on me, unlearned,/have mercy on me, weak,/put the spiritual sword in my unworthy mouth.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

The mystery of lawlessness, like a worm that eats kindness, has given birth to wickedness in our people, feeding on original sin, consuming Russian souls and directing them into a fiery flame.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

How we are ossified by madness, how we are rooted in passions, how we turn our spirit into the material, playing with the demon in destruction, we humiliate You, Lord, trampling on the Laws of Judgment.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

Now we weep from the depths for our sins, in Thy Passion, O Lord, we have found ourselves, if we do not forsake our iniquity, we will be thrown into the pitch darkness and the burden of godless torment, we will hopelessly weep forever.

Glory:

Forgive us, the accursed, Lord, forgive us for having forgotten You, forgive us for having established ourselves by faith in a false earthly paradise, forgive us for listening to the godless authorities, for cowardly resigning ourselves to the trampling of holy things.

And now:

Theotokos, Trisian, merciful, majestic, have mercy on us with Your kindness, feed our hardened souls with living contrition, petrified in sins, for the Russian people, I ask you to pray.

Sedelen , voice 6

Sobbing incinerates my soul, I always see a heavy retreat, like an irrepressible stone for the Russian people on their spiritual shoulders, turning away the mind from the heart of the nerish, striking the Russian soul with the devilish charm, Lord, protect us from destructive malice.

Song 4

Irmos: Glory to Thy Power, O Lord,/who glorified the Russian soul,/who filled the face of the saints with fire,/who shone over Russia,/who chose the Russian host of saints,/glory, O Lord, to Thy Ineffable Power.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

The Orthodox faith has given great fruits to the Russian people: spiritual kindness, non-covetousness, meekness, obedience, humility, mercy, patience, but our people, in the heat of their madness, have lost these fruits of blasphemy.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

Even though there is a Church of the Savior who does not honor the Savior, who with the pride of the devil tramples down the holy faith, who is overwhelmed by drunkenness, who is perishing from the disease of fornication, I sense this in part of this people and with deep weeping cry out to Thee, Lord, have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

Our children are defeated by malice, filled with selfishness, subtly enchanted by subtle sorcery from the screens, they do not honor their parents, and for our sins, unrepentant by vice, they are betrayed to mortals.

Glory:

I see in horror: madness is setting in: Russian men like wives appear, Russian wives do not want to give birth, they destroy babies in the womb, they are extinguished by insatiable debauchery, Lord, forgive terrible iniquities and do not destroy us.

And now:

A sea of mercy that never pours out, O All-Blessed Mother of God, Patroness of the Russian race, You are the Interlocutor of the Russian saints, Good Prayer Book for Russia, save and have mercy on your people.

Song 5

Irmos: My Lord, Lord,/You are my breath,/You are my Mind,/You are my Heart,/cleanse my leprous soul/and do not forsake me forever.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

My heart yearns for God, I always see my people, overwhelmed by the flattery of the devil, satiated with shameful sights, devastated without the Spirit of God, Lord, forgive my people and show grace.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

We are depraved in madness, we cover our passions with laughter, we indulge in heavy drinking, we play with fornication with a smile, we amuse ourselves with money-gathering: how sinful we are about the outcome of our souls.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

And those who laugh at the Church from us, disgrace the priesthood, do not honor traditions, and do not see, because they themselves do not pray and do this in the darkness of their souls, enlighten us, Russians, O Lord, Thy servants.

Glory:

I wash myself with tears, groans tear my heart for my people, Lord, do not entrust us to the hand of destruction, deliver us from the captivity of sin, deliver us from the deception of the devil, we are sinners, Lord, Thy servants.

And now:

Queen of Heaven, most holy Mother of God, how much you helped us, gracious to glorious Russia, glorifying sovereign Rus', glory to you, our most pure Patroness.

Song 6

Irmos: O Lord who loves mankind,/our merciful Master,/bear long-suffering to our sins,/calling to repentance,/do not forsake us to the Savior,/bring our sinful souls to Life.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

The Russian people have sunk to the bottom, exalting vice in the place of God, feeding on spiritual stench, turning away from God in unclean acquisitions, we worship the earthly valley, Lord, give us understanding and have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

Through flattery upbringing, unmercifulness and wounding, like a pig at a drinking trough, we wallow in sins, we direct aspirations towards self-indulgence in every way, we exchange heavenly for earthly things, forgive us, the damned, Lord.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

The glory of the cathedral is lost, the Russian state is in ruins, as we do not understand: we bear punishment from the Lord for admonition, and if we do not repent, we will completely perish. Forgive us, foolish ones, Lord.

Glory:

So the river: the Russian people are one, their branches are different: Great Russians, Little Russians, Belarusians are the essence. Now, for our sins, we are divided, like dogs barking at each other; forgive us, Lord, and unite us.

And now:

My all-graceful Mother, forgive us, the damned, and open the doors of repentance to us, our most gracious Queen, all-glorious Comforter, save us, the unrepentant.

Kontakion

Call, my people, to the Lord, weep for your sins, be filled with repentance, close yourself to sin: we are Russian people, Orthodox, we are Christ’s. Help us to be saved, Lord.

Ikos

Lord, the Boundless Ocean of love, the Power of patience, visit us with Your Spirit, saturate us with Salvation, enlighten us with repentance, so that we may settle in Paradise, so that we may be dissolved in You, so that we may praise You with an eternal song.

Song 7

Irmos: The fathers of Jewry/were not burned by fire,/having sincerely accepted faith/and received victory,/so, O Lord, protect us from the fire of unrighteousness,/God, blessed are you our fathers.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

We thirst for the entertainment of the insane, we think that we will be satisfied with it, we do not know that we find spiritual emptiness, we turn away from God, Who art blessed forever.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

We do not thank Thee, Lord, for Thy good deeds, for Thy bounty, except that we grumble at our neighbor, and are indignant at others through our own barbarism, saying in turn: Blessed art thou, O God of our father.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

We don’t know that faith is life, if you want to be saved, leave everything and follow the Lord. We, in the midst of unfaithfulness, worship with passion, turn away from the Cross, forgetting that God is our Father, Blessed are You.

Glory:

You endure our madness, without abandoning the Russian people, you wait for repentance, providing for salvation, God of our father, Blessed are you.

And now:

Most Merciful Queen, Most Blessed Mother, guide Your chosen ones, teaching us about Christ, showing miracles not made by hands, Blessed are You, Your Son.

Song 8

Irmos: My Christ Jesus, / I am sobered by Your name, / I look with contrition in my heart at my people: because we do not praise Your Name, / Having closed our minds, / God, enlighten us forever.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

There are so many obstacles on the path of salvation, but we don’t even think about overcoming them, entangled in the devil’s snares, we are tempted by corruptible sweetness, and if we don’t come to our senses, we will weep forever.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

In the last summer, Russian souls die without repentance, men without war are killed by drink, wives die by carelessness. Fear pierces my heart, I always see this, God save me forever.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

The Apostle said: These are the last times, save yourself. How we can commit iniquities now, we ourselves step into deceitful mouths, yielding to the flattering beast, clinging to the foul mark, Lord, protect us from this forever.

Glory:

We know our filth, Lord, we cannot do any good without You, help us to direct our feet for good, grant us the holy faith, revive us with Your Spirit, blessed art Thou forever.

And now:

Mother of God Mary, our guiding star, the meekest Mother, the Patroness of Russia, without You we will not see the light, You are our Savior.

Song 9

Irmos: Thou hast loved Thy Son more than all others,/as the Savior of the human race,/Thou hast acquired the Trisagion love,/Thou hast cared for the Orthodox people,/Thou hast not forsaken our people,/Prayed for the souls of the Russians of Thy Son.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

I fall before you, Russian saints, pray for our unrepentant people, reverends, martyrs, confessors, saints and righteous women, pray to God for the souls of Russians.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

Holy Royal Martyr, illuminated by heavenly glory, forgive our unrepentant sins: allowing your murder, worshiping the power of troubles, pray to God for the souls of the Russians.

Have mercy on us, God, have mercy on us

If we do not repent, we will perish in vain, tearfully, Lord, we ask for Your forgiveness, breathe Your Mind into our hearts, revive the Russian faith, save Russian souls.

Glory:

I believe that the blood of the new martyrs was not in vain, that the Russian saints shone forth for our salvation, my people are weak, but holy in God, forgive us, Russian, Lord, and revive us in Your Spirit.

And now:

Unbrideless Bride, You are the sovereign Queen, I praise You, falling to You I pray to You: do not forsake us and Your Almighty Son for the Russian souls.

Prayer

Lord, Most Merciful King, forgive the grave sins of our people, forgive Thy people for their foolish deviation from Thy Holy Law, as we trample Thy commandments, are wounded by hypocrisy, surrender to the unclean spirit, do not honor the Holy Church, do not seek salvation, do not weep over our unrestrained sins. Forgive us, Lord, as we are carried away by the spirit of the times, in vanity, in a sensual bliss, indulging our mortal bodies, amusing ourselves with mortal drink, playing with the smile of an animal with fornication, and filling ourselves with absconding.

Forgive, Lord, the retreat of the Russian generations: the overthrow of Thy Anointed One, the indulgence of the power of the devil, the destruction of Thy shrines. Forgive, Holy Almighty, our unbelief, as we worship soulless idols, and before the dark West we grovel destructively. Establish our people on the rock of faith, O Lord, make the Russian Orthodox Church the ship of our salvation. Sober up the spiritual hairs of our people; without You we cannot do anything. We are united by You. Help us to find Orthodox unity, to stand on the path of the righteous, worthy of being Rome the Third, the machinations of the Antichrist are striking, the road to You, Holy Most Merciful Lord, sanctifying by Your Spirit. Strengthen us in military battles, revive the greatness of our people, the Russians, who are Strong through You and Holy through You. Protect the earthly Church from all kinds of false teachers, make it pure and our guiding star. Forgive us, Lord, apostate sinners; help us to be born in Thy Dus into Orthodox power for salvation. Glory to Thee, our Savior, Father, Son and Holy Soul, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
