Brief biography and quotes from Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky about life, aphorisms

F.M. Dostoevsky: short biography

I think that many of you will like the statements of this difficult person. Perhaps you will take some of them into service and operate with them when the opportunity arises, or maybe they will serve as a lesson for you.

The books of the great writer and thinker influenced the work of a number of Nobel Prize laureates in literature and the formation of existentialism and Freudianism. Next I will talk about some facts from the biography of F.M. Dostoevsky.

I will also give some of his selected statements. Here is one of them: “Without the rudiments of the positive and beautiful, a person cannot emerge from childhood into life; without the rudiments of the positive and beautiful, a generation cannot be set on its journey.”

Childhood and youth

The most famous writer was born on November 11 (October 30, old style) 1821 in Moscow, at the Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor, where Father Mikhail Andreevich, who was distinguished by a very tough, cruel disposition, worked at that time as a surgeon.

His mother, Maria Feodorovna, a merchant’s daughter, was, on the contrary, an example of kindness and kindness; her religious worldview played a significant role in shaping the views of the future writer.

Since 1832, teachers first came home to Fyodor and Mikhail, his older brother, from 1834-1837. they were trained in a private boarding school. The year 1837 played a special role in the writer’s life: this year his mother died, A. S. Pushkin, one of his favorite childhood writers, died, the same year Fedor moved to St. Petersburg, where in 1838 he entered the St. Petersburg Military Engineering School school.

Studying at this institution did not inspire Dostoevsky, the disciplines taught there did not correspond to his natural inclinations, military drill and loneliness had a detrimental effect on the sensitive nervous system. In 1839, he suffered his first attack of epilepsy, which became a companion for life. The disease was provoked by a family tragedy: in 1839, his father was killed by peasants.

After graduating from college in 1843, the young specialist’s place of service was the drawing room of the St. Petersburg engineering team, but a year later he retired with the rank of lieutenant, firmly intending to devote himself to literature. His first work was a translation of Balzac's novel Eugénie Grande in 1844.

Literary activity

His first novel, “Poor People,” in 1846 was extremely highly rated by reviewers, in particular by V. Belinsky, who said that a great future awaited the young writer.

The writer became famous, but towards the second book, “The Double”, the attitude turned out to be colder.

The starting point for the next period of his biography was his acquaintance with M.V.’s society. Petrashevsky, participation in the circle of N.A. Speshneva and S.F. Durova. Dostoevsky was critical of the forbidden literature that was read at the meetings.

Despite this, in April 1849, along with all the other members of the circle, he was imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress for 8 months and sentenced to death, which was canceled at the last moment.

As a punishment, the writer was ordered to serve 4 years of hard labor, after which he served as a simple soldier. After serving years of hard labor in the Omsk fortress, in January 1854 Fyodor Mikhailovich went to serve with the rank of private in Semipalatinsk.

In 1855 he was already an officer. Dostoevsky owed his promotion to the loyal poems he wrote in honor of the widow of Emperor Nicholas I, who died in February 1855.

In 1857 F.M. Dostoevsky was given back his title of nobility and given permission to publish his works.

Against the backdrop of external events, no less intense internal work took place. The writer, looking for truth in man, turned to religion with all his soul and chose Jesus Christ as his only ideal for the rest of his life.

He spoke about faith like this: “Moreover, if someone proved to me that Christ is outside the truth, and it really were that the truth is outside Christ, then I would rather remain with Christ than with the truth.”

In 1859, Dostoevsky, who retired for health reasons, was allowed to leave for Tver, and already in 1860, St. Petersburg became the new place of residence of his family, but for many years he was under secret surveillance. In St. Petersburg, Fyodor Mikhailovich, as an author and editor, worked with his brother Mikhail on the magazine “Time”, after its closure - in the magazine “Epoch”.

It was in these publications that “The Humiliated and Insulted,” “Notes from the House of the Dead,” and “Notes from the Underground” were published. Thanks to his last work, published in 1864 and influencing the development of philosophical thought in the 19th century, Dostoevsky began to be considered a national philosopher.

The years 1863-1864 in the biography are marked by travel abroad. His companion was a certain Apollinaria Suslova, with whom the writer was seriously interested at that time. Another passion was gambling, which thoroughly undermined his financial situation.

In 1866, stenographer Anna Snitkina appeared in the writer’s life, thanks to whom the novel “The Player” was presented to the publisher within a month. This woman became his wife, assistant, organizer of their life together.

In 1871, the writer said goodbye to playing roulette and plunged headlong into creativity: the period of biography from 1872 to 1878. (he lived in Staraya Russa at that time) turned out to be very fruitful. In particular, the famous novels “Demons”, “Teenager” (1875) and others were written then. He spoke about the Russian people like this: “The highest and most characteristic feature of our people is a sense of justice and a thirst for it.”

Throughout 1873-1874. Dostoevsky collaborated with the newspaper-magazine “Citizen” as an editor and at the same time wrote multi-genre works for this publication. Thus, in 1873, the beginning of the “Diary of a Writer” was laid, which he wrote intermittently until his death. He became the spokesman for Dostoevsky's religious, aesthetic, and political views and enjoyed enormous popularity.

last years of life

In October 1878, Dostoevsky returned to St. Petersburg, in 1879-1880. worked on the last novel in his creative biography “The Brothers Karamazov”. In 1879, the famous writer received an invitation from Emperor Alexander II to introduce him to the highest family.

At the opening of the monument to Pushkin in Moscow on June 8, 1880, Dostoevsky made a speech that caused an enormous public outcry and became a symbol of glory and high moral authority.

This speech also turned out to be the spiritual testament of the writer, who was perceived as a mentor, a preacher, because a year later, on February 9 (January 28, O.S.), Fyodor Mikhailovich passed away due to worsening lung disease.

On the morning of the fateful day, Dostoevsky told his wife that he would die that day, and in the evening his heart actually stopped. He was buried at the Tikhvin cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg.
