The Church of John the Russian in Kuntsevo is an ancient Orthodox church. The building was named after the confessor revered in Orthodoxy - the righteous John. Already at an advanced age, he was drafted to serve in the army. He took part in many battles. During one of which the confessor was captured. From captivity he was sold into slavery to one of the commanders of the Turkish cavalry.

John worked hard during the day, but despite this, as soon as he had free time, he read prayer requests and fasted. At night, when everyone went to bed, the confessor visited the cave church, where the sacrament of holy communion took place on Saturdays. While in slavery in the house where he lived, the righteous man performed miraculous deeds. Other people quickly became aware of them. Due to this, all people began to call him a saint.

Veneration of the righteous

John was officially canonized in 1962. Construction work on the temple, which was consecrated in his honor, began in 2003 in Kunetsevo with the blessing of the Patriarch. It was designed in the form of a small building in the “ship” style, which was typical of many similar buildings at that time. Wooden materials were used during construction.

In those years, this style was used for many holy places of that time. The main and side altars, which are located inside the church. During consecration it was divided into two parts. One part was consecrated in honor of St. John. The second part of it is in honor of the Annunciation of the Holy Mother of God. One of the main decorations is the iconostasis. It combines all the necessary elements and looks very rich and beautiful.

Temple of Saint-Martyr Ignatius the God-Bearer on Vereiskaya

Ignatius the God-Bearer was born during the earthly life of the Savior on the territory of modern Syria. According to church tradition, as a child he met Jesus Christ himself. It was he who was the youth whom the Savior put before the apostles and said, “If you do not turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Having matured, Ignatius became a disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian, and also accompanied the Apostle Peter on his travels. Deep faith, true modesty and unceasing prayer distinguished him. Because the name of the Lord never left the heart of Ignatius, they began to call him the God-Bearer.

Subsequently, Ignatius the God-Bearer became a bishop in one of the centers of the ancient world - the city of Antioch (modern Antakya in Turkey). At that time, this city was part of the Roman Empire.

He ruled the Antiochian church for 40 years, from 67 to 107, and enjoyed the deepest respect and love of the early Christians of both Syria and other local churches. He introduced the so-called antiphonal singing, in which two choirs sing alternately, as if calling out to each other.

According to legend, he saw this method of singing in a revelation, seeing the worship of the angelic world. This method of singing quickly spread from Antioch to all the early churches and has survived to this day.

Once, in 107 AD, after a successful campaign against the Scythians, Emperor Trajan, who found himself with an army in Antioch, ordered altars to be erected to idols, and all residents to worship them. And those who did not do this were put to death.

Soon he was informed that the Christians were not following his orders, and their high priest was urging them not to worship idols, maintain virginity and despise earthly riches.

note

Ignatius the God-Bearer was summoned for questioning by the emperor, who first tried to convince the saint to worship idols, then resorted to threats. Having received a firm refusal, the emperor condemned the presbyter of the church to execution - torn to pieces by lions in Rome.

The saint calmly and joyfully accepted this sentence: “I am the wheat of the Lord,” he writes in his epistles, “and I must be ground by the teeth of beasts in order to become the true bread of Christ.”

Ignatius the God-Bearer went to the place of his execution on foot, accompanied by a convoy of 10 soldiers. The journey was not long (almost 2800 km), with a stop in the city of Smyrna (now Izmir).

During his travels, Ignatius the God-Bearer met with ambassadors of various churches of the ancient world, wrote at least seven letters to believers, where he strengthened them, called for unanimous conciliar prayer, and warned against those preachers who, calling themselves Christians, did not live a Christian life and were a danger to believers .

He also asked not to try to save him from death, seeing himself in his humility as unworthy before the Lord, and hoping, by accepting martyrdom, to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Ignatius the God-Bearer was torn to pieces by lions on December 20, 107 (January 2, New Style). According to legend, the lions did not touch the heart of the saint, on which the name of the Lord was forever imprinted.

And today, his Christian feat remains an example for thousands of Christians who are still being persecuted in Syria and around the world. His words have reached us: “Listen to the bishop, so that God may also listen to you... Let baptism remain with you like a shield; faith is like a helmet; love is like a spear; patience is like complete armor.”

Hieromartyr Ignatius, pray to God for us!

STORY

In Soviet times, there was not a single functioning church in the Kuntsevo area, despite the fact that this was an old Moscow area. And when the first wooden church opened here in 2004, many old-timers even entered it with some surprise and admitted that they had never been to church. Both the architecture of the church and the structure of parish life are aimed at the ordinary Muscovite, so that he can feel calm and familiar here. “In our time, the psychological and spiritual stress on a person has increased many times,” says His Holiness the Patriarch. — Being in the whirlwind of huge megacities, we really experience a lot of pressure from the outside, and a person must be able to restore his spiritual strength. When we come to the temple, when we touch the grace of God, we leave the temple different, because God touches us. And He heals our inner state of mind, and often our physical ailments.”

The parish has a small wooden church, which was erected in 2003-2004 in the architectural form of a “ship”, which is characteristic of ancient Russian wooden churches, that is, a small ship. This form symbolizes the “refuge” in the sea of life, which is the Church. The main altar was consecrated in honor of the righteous John the Russian Confessor. The second, attached, is in honor of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The main shrine is the icon of Righteous John the Russian with the relics of the saint.

Righteous John the Russian

Celebration of June 9 (May 27)

Righteous John the Russian is revered throughout the Orthodox world as a great saint, who endured much suffering for the sake of faith and became famous for his countless miracles during his lifetime. He healed the sick, admonished the lost, saved sailors from death and innocents from unjust judgment. The saint provides special protection to children.

Life

John the Russian was born in Little Russia and served as a soldier in the army of Peter I. During the Prut campaign of 1711, he was captured by the Turks and sold into slavery to an aga (cavalry commander), who lived in Cappadocia, in the city of Prokopion (now Urgup in Turkey).

Through cruel torture, Muslims tried to persuade John to accept Islam, but he proved himself to be a staunch confessor of the Christian faith. Seeing the inflexibility of the Russian soldier, the aga instructed him to look after the cattle, placing them in a stall next to the horses.

Uncomplainingly and conscientiously carrying out all the orders of his master, the saint showed extraordinary firmness in matters of faith. He worked during the day and offered prayers to the Lord at night. In the cold of winter and in the heat of summer, half naked and barefoot, he performed his duties. Other slaves often mocked him, seeing his zeal. Righteous John was never angry with them; on the contrary, on occasion he helped them in their work and consoled them in trouble.

Such sincere kindness of the saint pleased the master and slaves. Aga and his wife began to trust righteous John so much and respect him for his honesty and nobility that they offered him a small room near the straw barn for housing. John refused to go there and continued to sleep in his favorite stable. Exhausting his body with fasting, John gave food to poor Greek families suffering under the Turkish yoke. Every Saturday he took communion in the cave church of the Great Martyr George. The righteous man humbly said that the Lord, for his salvation, had judged him to live in slavery in a foreign land.
