The ancient city of Murom. We first learn about him from the “Tale of Bygone Years” by Nestor the Chronicler. Venerable Ilya of Murom, monk of Pechersk, better known as the Russian hero Ilya of Muromets. The first passion-bearing princes canonized in Rus' were Gleb and his brother Boris, and of course, the faithful Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia. The Cathedral of God's Ascetics of the Land of Murom has about 20 saints.

Church of Peter and Fevronia in Maryino today

The Church of Peter and Fevronia is located in Maryino, the patriarchal courtyard of Moscow. The church got its name from the saints of the same name, who were canonized in 1547. The monk Ermolai first wrote about them. The work was called: “The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom.”

The story of this married couple was interesting. Peter was the prince of Omsk, and Fevronia was a simple girl. Their marriage was a misalliance at that time, but was able to withstand many adversities. At the end of their lives, both spouses took monastic vows. According to the chronicle, the couple died on the same day. They bequeathed to bury them in 1 coffin, but with a partition between the bodies.

Such a desire did not correspond to the Orthodox canons of burial, so they were placed in different monasteries. However, after some time they ended up together again. This miracle is described in the story about the lives of Peter and Fevronia. These saints are considered patrons of family well-being.

The Church of Peter and Fevronia in Maryino has important religious significance in the life of this region of Moscow. Thanks to its construction, the residents of this place have a good temple within walking distance.

Kontakion, tone 8

Thinking of the reign of this world and temporal glory, / for this sake you lived piously in the world, Peter, / together with your wife, the wise Fevronia, / pleasing God with alms and prayers. / Likewise, even after death, lying inseparably in the tomb, / you invisibly give healing ,/ and now pray to Christ, // to save the city and the people who glorify you.

Architect, exterior decoration, architectural ensemble

The Church named after Peter and Fevronia has a 2-stage construction phase. Today it is a temporary structure that can accommodate from 50 to 70 parishioners. Over time, they plan to build a stone temple here, which will operate permanently. The temporary structure was erected very quickly. From above its shape is similar to a cross. The rapid construction was facilitated by a frame made of metal profiles.

The roof and walls of the temple are made using modern sandwich panels made of mineral wool. In an interview, the priest of the temple, Pavel Gumerov, said that due to insufficient funding, it was necessary to build it as cheaply as possible. Therefore, a modular construction plan was chosen. The roof was made of metal tiles. It is decorated with 3 domes.

The Church of Peter and Fevronia in Maryino is decorated with 3 domes.

The construction project was suggested by John Koval, a priest from Lyublino (a friend of the rector of the Church of Peter and Fevronia). The windows in the temple are standard - PVC with double glazed windows. The outer part of the building has blockhouse cladding. It is noteworthy that the church is made of wood, which is impregnated with fire. For the same reason, the temple has 2 exits, as well as a modern fire alarm system.

From the outside, the building is a building in the Old Russian style. The temporary temple is installed on concrete slabs - this makes it possible, if necessary, to move the building anywhere while maintaining its integrity.

From the inside, the temple has the following area parameters:

  • Narthex – 14 m².
  • Common room – 108 m².
  • The altar part is 17 m².

In the future, they plan to expand the temple and change its appearance. The number of parishioners accommodated in the common hall should be increased to 500 people.

Interesting facts about the temple in the surrounding area

Despite the fact that the Church of Peter and Fevronia is quite young, there are a number of interesting facts associated with it. For example, ordinary Orthodox people took part in the construction of the monastery free of charge. Father Pavel in one of his interviews spoke about an amazing incident. In 2014, money was needed to build a temple.

After the prayer service, the rector addressed the parishioners with a request to donate at least some. One man clarified exactly how much money needs to be raised. After it was announced, he gave exactly as much as Father Pavel asked. It turned out that this man’s wife had died, but she really wanted to donate money to some temple.

And before her death she told her husband - build a church in Maryino. In this miraculous way we managed to find the missing amount of money. The interior decoration of the temple was assembled gradually. The first icons were simply printed, laminated and inserted into frames. And the vestments for the altar and the throne were sewn by Father Paul’s mother.

In the vicinity of the Church of Peter and Fevronia, the Maryino district is growing. There is a shopping center nearby. Basically, it is a quiet and peaceful place in which the church has become an indispensable part.

One of the churches in the Maryino district belongs to the Nikolo-Perervinsky monastery

The temple belongs to the Nikolo-Perervinsky monastery, which was founded during the Battle of Kulikovo. On January 8, 1991, the temple was transferred to the community of the Russian Orthodox Church for indefinite and free use.

Afterwards, believers led by Archpriest Vladimir Chuvikin immediately came to this place. These were singers and parishioners of the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. They prayed and read akathists.

The first service in St. Nicholas Church was held on Tuesday of the first week of Great Lent. On March 29 of the same year, the rector of the church, Archpriest Vladimir, consecrated the church of St. Nicholas with a small rite.

The service began on the eve of Lazarus Saturday, as if as a sign of the resurrection of the entire monastery. Since then, services in the temple have not been interrupted.

There is a Sunday school and a theological seminary at the church. Also on Wednesdays there are catechetical talks for adults.

Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Maryino.
The wooden church dates back to the 16th century. It is located on Bratislavskaya.

The original wooden church was built in the 16th century. And then the stone temple was built from 1860 to 1890, by an unknown architect. Afterwards the temple was closed in 1938, like many temples. The premises were given over to a warehouse.

It was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church only in 1991. After this time, regular worship services resumed there. The main chapel in the church was consecrated on the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The left side chapel is consecrated in honor of the Bogolyubsk Icon of the Mother of God and in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. And on the right, the chapel is consecrated in honor of Saint Leonty of Rostov.

Territory

Well, then we walked a little around the Trinity Cathedral. The territory of the monastery itself is small. At least where outsiders are allowed to walk. Everything around is very beautiful. Behind a low fence there are cute wooden houses (apparently nuns’ cells),

amazing corner with a fountain,

and, of course, flowers, flowers everywhere...

Well, very close, right outside the territory of the convent (literally across the road) you can see the domes of the main cathedral of the Holy Annunciation Monastery, where we are now going.

To get the most out of the city and its surroundings, I recommend booking an apartment, room or hotel for one or more nights. You can easily rent daily accommodation in Murom on Airbnb, or book a hotel through Booking.
