Akathist to St. Martyrs Guria Samon and Aviv - read

That for a person, family is a place where they love, care and always wait. From the beginning of life, the family is the parental home, later it is an alliance created by him personally with another person who is nearby “in both trouble and joy.” Each of us dreams of a strong and loving family.

About the author About the book

Let's try to figure out who the holy martyrs and confessors Gury, Samon and Aviv were, and what requests can be addressed to them through prayer and akathist.

It was no coincidence that I began my article with a mention of family and you guessed that Gury, Samon and Aviv are the patrons of family and marriage. For many centuries they have been hearing the prayers of women who need protection, no matter how strange it may sound - protection from their own spouses. Unfortunately, the sacrament of marriage, the basis of which is unity, is not always fulfilled by people. The main problem is that the power given by God to a spouse over his wife is often manifested in a despotic form, rather than in a loving form. It's no secret that statistically it is the woman who becomes the victim of a tyrannical attitude towards herself on the part of her husband, suffering from all kinds of untruths and insults.

One of the interesting facts is that church tradition brought together these saints who lived at different times . From the writings of the chroniclers we know that the laymen Gury and Samon, being of the Christian faith, lived among the pagans in the city of Edessa. The inhabitants of Edessa, being pagans, seized Guria and Samana and tried to persuade them to sacrifice to the pagan gods, thereby forcing them to betray their faith, but they were unshakable and did not betray Christ. As punishment for this, they were subjected to terrible torture, and later they were thrown into prison for three months, doomed to hunger and torment. But the holy martyrs were strong in their faith and the pagans, seeing this, beheaded Guria and Samon. Later their bodies were buried according to Christian customs.

The story of the third Saint Abib was similar and also consisted in the fact that the pagans tried to convert him to the worship of pagan gods and betray Christ. However, Aviv was not broken, for he was strengthened by his faith and paid for it with his life. The holy martyr Avaiv was burned alive. Some chroniclers' sources contain evidence that after the burning, Aviv's body was found unharmed. The body of the martyr Aviv was buried next to Saints Gurius and Samon.

The ancient chronicles mention one of the most famous legends about the girl Euphemia, confirming that, having a strong faith in Christ and offering prayers to the saints, a miracle will definitely happen, you will definitely be heard and protected.

The legend tells a story in which, during the attack of the Huns on Byzantium, one of the warriors wanted to marry a Christian girl, Euphemia. To begin with, he began to ask the girl’s mother for her hand in marriage. However, the girl’s mother Sofia understood that this Goth warrior came from far away and perhaps somewhere there, in his native land, he already has a wife and she refused him. So that the girl’s mother would believe in the purity of his intentions, he swore at the relics of the holy martyrs Guria, Samon and Aviv, giving dinner to respect, love and care for her daughter, mother Sophia softened and soon agreed to their union, giving her blessing.

After the wedding, the warrior took his young wife Euphemia to his native land. Upon arrival home, the Goth warrior forced Euphemia to change into the dirty clothes worn by the maids, and took her into his house, where his wife and children were waiting for him from the war. He introduced Efemia as a Byzantine captive who would henceforth be a servant in their house.

After some time, poor Efimiya, who all the time endured humiliation, insults and insults addressed to her, gave birth to a son. The Goth's wife realized that her husband had brought back from the war not a captive, but a concubine. Being a very jealous wife, she killed (poisoned) Efimiya’s baby. When Efimiya discovered that her newborn son was dead, she noticed poison on his lips, wiping off the remnants of the poison with a piece of cloth, Efimiya soaked this cloth in the goblet from which the Goth’s wife always drank water. After drinking from the cup, the woman died, and the whole Gothic family brought down their accusations on Efimiya. Naming her a murderer, they decided to bury Efimiya alive along with the Goth’s dead wife. Poor Efimiya, having a strong Christian faith, began to pray to the holy martyrs Guria, Samon and Aviv, and a real miracle happened! The saints appeared behind her on white horses and carried Efimiya to her hometown.

After a long time, the Goth warrior again came to the house of Efimiya’s mother and told her that her daughter Efimiya was healthy and happy, living and raising her son. But before he had time to close his mouth, Efemia herself appeared behind him. The inhabitants of the city captured the treacherous Goth and executed him.

I am sure this is not the only case when the holy martyrs Gury, Samon and Aviv helped women of the Christian faith. In our time, patron saints still help, protect and defend those who have suffered difficulties in marriage.

In order for love, harmony and peace to come to the family, there is an akathist to the holy martyrs Guria, Samon and Aviv.
