FIND OUT why they read “OUR FATHER” 40 times a day... It really helps!

Every person who has repeatedly been accustomed to visiting local church churches to confess his soul before the face of Jesus Christ is familiar with the prayer called Our Father. For all believers, it is the main prayer of the Lord.

Ancient biblical legends say that the main savior and protector of the entire human race, during his life on earth, taught exactly this prayer to all the people around him. And all because the words presented in the Lord’s Prayer have a secret meaning, the awareness of which will allow people to change their lives for the better.

Why is the Lord's Prayer so important in the life of a modern person?

The importance of these words is often understood in the face of danger.
A person is designed in such a way that he gets used to everything, abstracts himself from any terrible events happening around him. But as soon as the breath of death touches the back of his head, a person remembers God.

Treasures must be collected in heaven, where neither a thief can steal nor rust can corrode. But modern humanity prioritizes an apartment and a car. Christ spoke about courage in the face of danger, about sacrifice and love for loved ones. And people of the 21st century film a drowning child with a smartphone camera.

We can say with confidence that humanity has taken a wrong turn and only sincere, pure prayer to our Lord can return us to the path of truth. Amen.

Our Father prayer listen to audio recording

With the development of technology, we can not only find the text of the Lord’s Prayer, or any other prayer - on the Internet there are all kinds of icons, sermons, Orthodox articles in various formats.

Many people turn on audio prayers to cleanse their homes of evil spirits, to calm a child who is crying and suffering from insomnia, and to set themselves in a calm mood in difficult times.

This is not forbidden by the church, but remember: you must be completely open and focused on the message of the prayer.

Appeal: Our Father

Jesus Christ made a discovery by offering a hitherto unknown address: Our Father. Not as a detached subject, but as the One who gives only good, without punishing anyone. Before this, in the Old Testament religion they saw in Him:

  • Almighty Governor of the universe;
  • the All-Wise Logos, leading the forces of nature, phenomena, elements;
  • the Terrible and Fair Judge, who has mercy and rewards;
  • God who does whatever he wants.

People did not think that it was possible to treat the Almighty as the Father of all: those on the right path and those in error; those who believe in God and those who reject; good and evil. Humanity, both knowing and enmity against Him, are His children, having one root. People enjoy freedom: to honor the Heavenly Father, or to live according to their own understanding.

The following episode can serve as an example of God’s love for everyone. When Moses and his people, having crossed the Black Sea, saw the drowning of Pharaoh’s army, he was incredibly happy. For this, God reproached the righteous man: “Why are you so happy when I am grieving: after all, the lost are also my children!”

Note: God, as a Father, admonishes and saves His children who turn to Him, revealing “illness.” He heals our souls as the best healer, so that they may have eternal life and not death.

"Deliver us from evil"

Here is a person’s request to protect him from the evil of this world. After all, more than once a day we see and hear around us corrupting images of the sin dominating the world. These are drug addicts and alcoholics hanging around our houses, pornography shamelessly and defiantly looking at us from the windows of kiosks, horror films from the TV screen, selective swearing in the entrance. All this invisibly stretches its tentacles towards us, penetrating the soul and causing sinful impulses. As long as we are in the body, this is inevitable.

18 “And the Lord will deliver me from every evil deed and preserve me for His Heavenly Kingdom; to Him be glory forever and ever. Amen." (2 Timothy 4:18)

Reading rules

The Lord's Prayer is truly powerful. With her help, thousands of people found peace and grace in their souls, got rid of depression, obsessive thoughts and even illnesses.

It is advisable to learn the prayer by heart so as not to get confused when pronouncing it. Our Father can be read both in church and at home. When saying the words of prayer, do not allow thoughts to distract you from the process. Open your soul to God, pronounce your words thoughtfully and with maximum sincerity. Let every word pass through you. The more fiery and heartfelt your appeal to the Lord is, the more likely it is that he will hear it.

While praying, try to be alone with the Lord. It's not about where you say it - in church, at home or in a noisy crowd. Just in these moments, renounce worldly affairs and imagine that, besides you and God, there is not a soul around.

Text of the Lord's Prayer in Russian

It is better for the person praying to understand the meaning of every word he utters when addressing God. During services in Orthodox churches and temples, prayers are read in Church Slavonic. But for the convenience of believers, the Lord’s Prayer was translated into modern Russian.

In Church Slavonic (in modern spelling).

During Orthodox services, the Lord's Prayer is read in Church Slavonic. It can be heard at morning and evening services, as well as during religious services. Traditionally, parishioners may sing the prayer along with the choir, leaving the last phrase of the doxology to the priest.

Our Father Orthodox prayer

About the Lord's Prayer: the history of its appearance

The Lord's Prayer was created by Jesus Christ himself at his first coming.

It arose in response to the requests of Jesus’ disciples, who saw their Teacher praying and wanted to learn from Him Himself how to pray. This is stated at the beginning of the eleventh chapter of the Gospel of Luke.

The Orthodox prayer Our Father in Russian appeared only one hundred and thirty-five years ago, when the Bible was translated from Straslavic.

Why is the Lord's Prayer read?

To understand in what cases a prayer is read, you should pay attention to the message of the petitions in it. In prayer they bow before God, asking for well-being and satiety, forgiveness of debts, atonement for sins, protection from worldly temptations

The Lord’s Prayer is also powerful against illnesses, against the evil eye, against troubles of any kind that can befall a person.

How to recite the Lord's Prayer correctly

You can read the Lord's Prayer, Our Father, both at home and in church. The main thing is to do this with an open heart, because prayer is, first of all, a dialogue with God.

Before reading the Lord’s Prayer at home, create the necessary conditions so that nothing distracts you, tune in, cross yourself three times, folding the fingers of your right hand: thumb, index and middle fingers together (in a pinch), ring and little fingers bent together and pressed to the palm. After each baptism, bow down. Start praying. Afterwards, say “Amen”, confirming and intensifying the prayer, then cross yourself three times again, bowing.

If there are icons at home, you need to read the Lord’s Prayer out loud or silently in front of them, some people read the Lord’s Prayer online in front of icons on the screen, this is also allowed, the main thing is to do it sincerely and with pure thoughts.

When the Lord's Prayer is recited

An important prayer rule for a layman consists of morning and evening prayers, which are performed daily. This rhythm is necessary, because otherwise the soul easily falls out of the prayer life, as if waking up only occasionally

In prayer, as in any big and difficult matter, inspiration, mood and improvisation are not enough.

How many times to read the Lord's Prayer

The Lord's Prayer is read twice a day: it is customary to start the morning with it and turn to the Lord God with it before going to bed, and if there is a desire and need, it is not forbidden to read it more often

It is worth remembering that it is not the verbosity that is important, but how much you give your heart to God:

Prayer Our Father for children: how to teach a child

How to teach a child the Lord's Prayer? The best place to start is with an explanation. It is necessary not to impose on the child a strict imperative in prayer: “Like, you have to and that’s it,” “Read from here to here until you finish reading, you don’t leave the room,” no.

God doesn't like violence. You should explain, guided by the experience of the Church, the Holy Fathers, and your personal life, why you need to pray

Who is the Lord? Why is He invisible? Why does he hear our prayers? It is important to answer the child’s questions, adapt to his perception of the world, including prayers

For preschool children, for example, it may be enough to teach them how to cross themselves correctly. And explain what the sign of the cross is. Learn to kiss icons. Sometimes it’s enough just to bring them or bring them to the temple, show the icon and say: “God!” And from this their personal journey in the Orthodox faith will begin. Teach your baby to wear a cross.

So, for example, a morning or evening prayer rule for a child may consist of a “cap,” that is, the beginning: “In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen"

In this case, less is more

Let the child read less, but with heartfelt attention, rather than more, but with anguish and irritation.

Rules of Prayer

While reading a prayer, every Orthodox Christian must adhere to the following religious rules:

Some religious interpretations say that the Lord's Prayer should be said forty times. The explanation lies in the number itself. The thing is that this figure has been considered truly unique since ancient times. This is evidenced by many interesting facts:

There is no rule in the church that says that you need to read this prayer 40 times. This is more of a popular belief that connects this number with ancient religious traditions that have Old Testament roots.

Her words need to be known not only by adults, but also by children, thus teaching them the highest spiritual values. In addition, reading the prayer 40 times helps improve memory, attention and discipline.

The important healing effect obtained from the prayer Our Father has long been recorded by many Orthodox people in many real cases that were able to prove the incredible power of prayer.

For example, in one letter that was discovered during the excavations, it was told about an incident that occurred during the Great Patriotic War. Its author was a Russian soldier who, during another bloody battle, was seriously wounded in the leg.

While waiting for the help of his comrades, he found himself surrounded by German invaders. At the moment when seconds separated Alexei from death, in the hope of the last miracle, he began to read the Our Father prayer to himself. At that moment, a shot immediately followed at the Russian soldier, after which he remained alive. It turned out that there were no cartridges in the machine gun's magazine. Then, daring to take a more ruthless step, one of the Germans took his grenade and threw it directly at the wounded Alexei, but it did not explode. This case, like many others, is proof of the great power of the Lord’s Prayer.

How to recite the Lord's Prayer correctly

This prayer is read upon awakening from sleep and for the coming sleep, since it is included without fail in the morning and evening rules - a set of prayers for daily reading.

The “Our Father” certainly sounds during the Divine Liturgy. Usually believers in churches sing it in chorus together with the priest and singers.

This solemn singing is followed by the presentation of the Holy Gifts - the body and Blood of Christ for the sacrament of communion. At the same time, parishioners kneel before the shrine.

It is also customary to read it before every meal. But modern man has no time all the time. However, Christians should not neglect their prayer duties. Therefore, it is permissible to read a prayer at any convenient moment, both while walking and even while lying in bed, as long as nothing distracts from the prayerful mood.

The main thing is to do this with awareness of the meaning, sincerely, and not just pronounce it mechanically. Literally from the first words addressed to God, believers feel security, humility and peace of mind. This state continues after reading the last prayer words.

Many famous theologians, such as John Chrysostom and Ignatius Brianchaninov, interpreted the “Our Father”. Their works provide extensive, detailed descriptions. Those who are interested in issues of faith should definitely familiarize themselves with them.

Many who have recently crossed the threshold of the temple, and are literally taking their first steps along the steps of the ladder of Orthodoxy, complain about the lack of understanding of prayers in the Old Church Slavonic language.

For such cases there is a translation into modern Russian. This option will be clear to everyone. But as practice shows, over time, incomprehensible words will become clearer, and worship will be perceived as a special art with its own style, its own language and traditions.

In the short text of the Lord's Prayer, all Divine wisdom fits into a few lines. There is a great meaning hidden in her, and everyone finds in her words something very personal: consolation in sorrows, help in endeavors, joy and grace.

Theological interpretation of prayer

Many theologians have turned to the interpretation of the Lord's Prayer. There are known interpretations of John Chrysostom, Cyril of Jerusalem, Ephraim the Syrian, Maximus the Confessor, John Cassian and others. General works were also written based on the interpretations of ancient theologians (for example, the work of Ignatius (Brianchaninov)).

Orthodox theologians

“Our Father” (icon, 1813)
Icon “Our Father” (XVII century)

The lengthy Orthodox catechism of Metropolitan Philaret (Drozdov) writes : “The Lord’s Prayer is the prayer that our Lord Jesus Christ taught to the apostles and which they passed on to all believers.”

. He distinguishes in it: invocation, seven petitions and doxology.

Invocation - “Our Father who art in heaven!”

Faith in Jesus Christ and the grace of man’s rebirth through the sacrifice of the cross gives Christians the ability to call God Father. Cyril of Jerusalem writes:

Only God himself can allow people to call God Father. He granted this right to people, making them sons of God. And, despite the fact that they withdrew from Him and were in extreme anger against Him, He granted oblivion of insults and the sacrament of grace.

The indication “he who is in heaven” is necessary in order to, starting to pray, “leave everything earthly and corruptible and lift up the mind and heart to the Heavenly, Eternal and Divine”

. It also indicates the location of God.

Petitions

According to Saint Ignatius (Brianchaninov), “The petitions that make up the Lord’s Prayer are petitions for spiritual gifts acquired for humanity through redemption. There is no word in prayer about the carnal, temporary needs of man.”

. However, Gregory of Nyssa believes that “in the command to ask for our daily bread, I think we are offered the teaching that contentment with little and moderation according to the law of dispassion is equal to not having a need for anything by nature.”

  1. “hallowed be thy name”
John Chrysostom writes that these words mean that believers should first of all ask for
“the glory of the Heavenly Father
    .
The Orthodox catechism indicates: “The name of God is holy and, without a doubt, holy in itself”
and at the same time can
“still be sanctified in people, that is, His eternal holiness can appear in them.”
    Maxim the Confessor points out:
“we sanctify the name of our heavenly Father by grace, when we mortify the lust attached to matter and cleanse ourselves from corrupting passions
    .
  2. “Thy Kingdom come”
The Orthodox Catechism notes that the Kingdom of God
    “comes hidden and inward.
The Kingdom of God will not come with observance (in a noticeable manner) .
Regarding the impact of the feeling of the Kingdom of God on a person, Saint Ignatius (Brianchaninov) writes: “He who has felt the Kingdom of God within himself becomes alien to a world hostile to God.
He who has felt the Kingdom of God within himself can desire, out of true love for his neighbors, that the Kingdom of God will open in all of them .
  3. “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”
With this, the believer expresses that he asks God so that everything that happens in his life happens not according to his own desire, but as it pleases God.
  4. “Give us this day our daily bread”
  5. “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”
Debts in this petition refer to human sins.
Ignatius (Brianchaninov) explains the need to forgive others their “debts” by the fact that
. See Parable of the Unmerciful Debtor.
  6. “Do not lead us into temptation”
In this petition, believers ask God how to prevent them from being tempted, and if, according to the will of God, they should be tested and purified through temptation, then God would not completely give them over to temptation and not allow them to fall.
  7. “Deliver us from the evil one”
In this petition, the believer asks God to deliver him from all evil and especially
“from the evil of sin and from the evil suggestions and slander of the spirit of malice - the devil
,” and from the inevitable fate of the evil one.

Doxology - “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."

With these words, a Christian expresses faith, hope and love that Almighty God will certainly fulfill his request. The doxology at the end of the Lord's Prayer is contained so that the believer, after all the petitions contained in it, gives God due reverence.

Prayer Our Father from the Saints

Two versions of this prayer are recorded in the New Testament: a lengthened form in the Gospel of Matthew [6:5-13] - as part of the Sermon on the Mount, and a shortened form in the Gospel of Luke [11:1-4] - as Jesus' answer to a request “one of his disciples” to teach them “to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” The prayer includes “deliver us from evil” in Matthew, and “lead us not into temptation” in Luke.

Our Father prayer from Luke

Our Father who art in heaven! Hallowed be your name,

thy kingdom come; may your will be done

on earth as in heaven; give us our daily bread

for us every day; and forgive us our sins, for

and we forgive every one of our debtors; and don't enter

us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Our Father prayer from Matthew

Our Father who art in heaven! Hallowed be your name, yeah

your kingdom come; may your will be done on earth,

as in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive debtors

ours; lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

the evil one. Now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

How to read the Lord's Prayer

God understands only those prayers that, when the person praying says it, understands what he is saying and feeling...

So, whoever says to God in prayer: Thy kingdom come, but does not know how this kingdom comes, not knowing, does not prepare to receive it and does nothing that is required on his part to receive it, is it possible for it to come? this kingdom to him? What good is it that he says in prayer: Thy kingdom come? The Lord says in the Holy Gospel: repent, for the kingdom of God is drawing near. So, do you want this kingdom to come to you? Repent. If you do not repent, no matter how much you say: Thy kingdom come, it will not come to you. Venerable Simeon the New Theologian

If you truly call God your Father, then trust in Him as the only Father, all-good, all-powerful, wise, unchangeable in His love and in all perfections. St. Righteous John of Kronstadt

Read “Our Father”, but do not lie: Forgive us our debts, just as we forgive…. Venerable Ambrose of Optina

...One must pray about this: Firstly, with pure intention - Thy will be done, for I, sincerely desiring to follow it unselfishly, not for the sake of reward or acquisition of anything, and not because You, Lord, have enriched me with bounties With His own He protected me from my opponents, as Satan reproached the righteous Job for this before God (Job 1:9-10), and not out of fear of the eternal torment of Gehenna, but in the simplicity of my heart I follow Your will, I desire what You desire, therefore only that You want it, that this is Your will, my God! Secondly, you must pray with love: Thy will be done! - I am looking for one thing here and I think one thing, that Thy will be done in everything, Lord! May the majesty of Your name, my God, spread and be glorified through me, Your indecent servant. I consider this alone to be my greatest honor and reward, so that I am worthy to please You, my Creator, Who gave me reason and free will as a guarantee of closest communication with You, my Creator and Savior. Saint John, Metropolitan of Tobolsk

Hallowed be Thy name... For this we pray that the name of God may be sanctified in us: not because it begins to be holy without being holy, but because in us it becomes holy when we ourselves are sanctified and do what is worthy of what is holy. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem

To say: Our Father - only those who, by a miraculous birth in Divine Baptism, according to the new and extraordinary law of pregnancy, show in themselves that they are true sons, have the right. And to say: Hallowed be Thy name - those who do nothing worthy of condemnation. And this: Thy kingdom come - those who avoid everything that gives pleasure to the tormentor. And this: Thy will be done - those who show this by their actions. And this: give us this day our daily bread - those who renounce luxury and extravagance. And this: forgive us our debts - those that forgive those who sin against them. And this: do not lead us into temptation, those who do not plunge themselves or others into it. And this: deliver us from the evil one - those who wage an irreconcilable war with Satan. And this: for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory - those who tremble at the words of God and show them in their very deeds. For the knowledge of prayer is successful to the same extent as the character and life of the one who prays is successful. Venerable Isidore Pelusiot
