Temple complex of the prophet Elijah, Alexander Nevsky and Paraskeva Pyatnitsa
is a monument of federal significance, located in the Porokhovye municipal district.
History[edit]
In 1715, far from the city, where this church now stands, the Okhtinsky gunpowder factories were founded. In 1717, a wooden chapel was built on their territory, consecrated in the name of St. Elijah the Prophet. In 1721, the chapel was dismantled and construction of the wooden Church of Elijah the Prophet, consecrated in 1722, began in its place. In 1742-1743, the wooden church was replaced by a wider wooden one, but on a stone foundation, the Church of Elijah the Prophet. Its consecration took place on July 18, 1743. In 1760, a warm winter chapel was added to the church, consecrated in the name of Dmitry of Rostov on December 27, 1760. A small cemetery was founded within the church fence. Construction of the church that stands there now began in 1782; the church was built according to the design of the architect N. A. Lvov, presumably with the participation of I. E. Starov. Completed and consecrated in 1785.
In 1805-1806, according to the design of the architect F. I. Demertsov, a warm chapel was added to the church, consecrated in the name of Alexander Nevsky. The front facade of the extension was decorated with a four-column Ionic portico with a triangular pediment. This chapel and the main volume of the temple were not united into one whole, but were located close to each other. The northern and southern facades of the extension are decorated with two Ionic columns. A single-tier bell tower with a spire rose above this extension. In 1875-1877, the Alexander Nevsky chapel was combined with the main building of the church due to the construction of an apse in the eastern part of the chapel and a vestibule in the western part of the temple. In 1901-1902, another reconstruction of the temple was carried out, during which the bell tower was built on one tier and the shape of the dome was slightly changed. The minor consecration of the rebuilt church took place on July 8, 1911. The bell tower is decorated with pilasters; both tiers on each side are completed by a triangular pediment. The second tier is completed by a small dome. Its completion, in turn, is a lantern topped with a spire with a cross.
On May 8, 1923, the church was given cathedral status. From that moment until 1938, the temple belonged to the Renovationist church. On July 11, 1938, the Ilyinsky Cathedral was closed, its building was transferred to the Moscow Military District. In 1974, there was a fire in the temple building. In 1983, after a fire, restoration of the temple began, and in 1988 it was returned to the diocese. On December 22, 1988, the Alexander Nevsky chapel, which was not damaged by the fire, was consecrated. The main temple was consecrated in 1989 and is still in operation today.
History of creation
In the 14th century, the Elias Church appeared in Cherkizovo. This village got its name thanks to its owner, Tsarevich Serkizi. Over time, he sold his property to Ilya Ozakov, a fellow native of the Golden Horde. He was a baptized Tatar and everyone knew him as a rather pious person. Thanks to him, the temple appeared, which he named in honor of his heavenly patron.
This church was built in a very picturesque corner on the banks of the Sosenka River. Together with his brother Ilya, they were servants of Metropolitan Alexy. It was to him that the ownership of Ilya Ozakov passed. The location of the temple was very much to the liking of the Metropolitan and he made it the summer residence of the Moscow patriarchs. The monastery achieved its greatest growth and development under St. Innocent.

In 1689-1690, a stone temple was erected on the site of an old burnt wooden church. It was consecrated on June 18, 1690. During the 20th century, the temple was restored twice:
- 1821-1825 - for some time it became five-domed.
- some letters said that reconstruction of the temple was necessary. The project was made public in 1888, and already in the 90s the consecration took place.
The cemetery of this temple is a kind of necropolis, which was able to withstand destruction during the Soviet era. In addition, the famous Moscow holy fool Ivan Yakovlevich Koreysha is buried here.
They managed to survive the Soviet period by cunning. The clergy collected 1 million funds and sent them to Stalin. Thus the monastery was taken under control. Also, icons were brought here that were going to be destroyed.
The main shrines include:
- icon "Assumption",
- Icon "Life-Giving Spring"
- image “Healing of St. Alexy Tanduly"
- icon of Our Lady of Jerusalem,
- icon of the seven youths of Ephesus with parts of relics,
- Athos copy of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God.
Current state[edit]
Currently, the Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah on Porokhov is a parish church living a full-blooded liturgical life.
Basically, the temple spiritually nourishes the Rzhevka-Porokhovye microdistrict, but, as in pre-revolutionary times, the temple is loved by the townspeople - pilgrims from St. Petersburg come to it from all areas of the city and its environs; Frequent pilgrim guests from other cities of Russia and from abroad arrive to venerate this great shrine on the eastern outskirts of St. Petersburg.
From 1997 to January 2015, the temple was the center of the Bolsheokhtinsky deanery, which, at that time, was one of the largest in St. Petersburg and the region. Now the temple is the center of the newly formed Vyborg deanery district (within the administrative boundaries of the Vyborg district of St. Petersburg) of the St. Petersburg diocese.
A Sunday school has been opened at the church for adults and children, recognized in terms of scale and organization of the educational process as one of the best in the city. The temple library, numbering 9,000 items, is available to everyone.

Architecture[edit]
Ilyinskaya Church was built in the style of early Russian classicism and is a round rotunda surrounded by a colonnade of sixteen Ionic columns. The walls are painted yellow. Between the two columns there are windows: at the bottom - arched, at the top - round. There is a round balustrade along the edge of the roof. A little closer to the center of the roof there is a squat black dome on a low, almost absent drum. The dome is crowned with a lantern with a cross. Inside the church hall there are no pylons dividing the hall into naves. The entire hall is painted in blue, imitating the sky. In the center of the ceiling is a large image of Jesus Christ.
Chronicle
The history of the temple began in the 14th century. The owner of the village of Cherkizovo, Ilya Ozakov, erected a wooden five-domed church on the river bank and named it in honor of his guardian angel. Soon, Moscow Metropolitan Alexy bought the village along with the church and established his summer residence there, transferring it to the ownership of the Peipus Monastery. The temple and the house of the patriarch, built nearby, formed an amazing ensemble of wooden architecture. Subsequent patriarchs continued to develop and equip the monastery, regularly coming there for summer holidays.
At the beginning of the 16th century, during the Time of Troubles, the Elias Church was burned, but was soon rebuilt. After another fire that destroyed the buildings, a stone church was erected in 1689-1690 under Metropolitan Adrian. The new church became single-domed with a refectory and a bell tower. New chapels were built - St. Alexius and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Since that time, the temple has a second name - Holy Cross.
In 1821-1825, during reconstruction, the temple was expanded and again became five-domed. All work on the reconstruction of the building was carried out very carefully, trying not to damage the unique structures of past years. By the end of the 19th century, the Cherkizovo settlement increased significantly, and the question arose about a new reconstruction of the building. In 1890, the reconstruction was completed, the single-domed dome was restored and a new bell tower was erected. The temple was re-consecrated by Moscow Patriarch Innocent. Under his leadership, the Metropolitan's house was also rebuilt.
During Soviet times, the Church of Elijah the Prophet was lucky - it was not demolished or closed, like most churches throughout Russia. Only in the thirties were all the bells removed from the belfry. During the Great Patriotic War, the church ministers and parishioners collected one million rubles to build an airplane. Stalin appreciated the patriotism of the priests and residents of Cherkizov, expressing his gratitude. Perhaps this fact played a decisive role in the decision to preserve the temple. The church remained active and services did not stop for a single day. Icons and other Orthodox valuables were brought to the monastery from closed and destroyed churches.
By the eighties of the last century, the buildings had become so dilapidated that the temple was on the verge of complete destruction. In 1982, restoration of the cathedral and its interior began. In the nineties, fires destroyed the residence of the metropolitans. Serious reconstruction of the entire complex of buildings belonging to the Temple of the Prophet Elijah began only in the 21st century. In 2006, the church again acquired bells cast at the ZIL plant. Other temple buildings are gradually being restored, including the patriarchal residence.
