Alexander Nevsky Church
built in 1897 by order of mayor N.M. Bardygin by architect A.S. Kaminsky in the pseudo-Russian style - a brick five-domed, four-pillar building with hipped domes.
History[edit]
The decision to build a new church in Yegoryevsk was made on June 18, 1877 at a citywide meeting in the City Duma. At the same meeting, a commission for the construction of the church was created. The mayor Nikifor Mikhailovich Bardygin was unanimously elected chairman of the commission, who was the first to contribute three thousand rubles for the construction of the temple. At the suggestion of N.M. It was decided to build the Bardygin temple at the intersection of Shirokaya and Yegoryevskaya streets.
In 1881, drawings of the temple were submitted to the Spiritual Consistory, which Nikifor Mikhailovich proposed to build in the name of the holy noble Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky, the heavenly patron of Emperor Alexander II, in memory of his deliverance from the assassination attempt on April 2, 1879. The design of the temple was carried out by Moscow architect A.S. Kaminsky commissioned by N.M. Bardygina. While preparations were underway for the construction of the temple, in 1881 a chapel in the name of St. Alexander Nevsky was erected on Shirokaya Street.
On October 1, 1897, Bishop Meletius (Yakimov) of Ryazan and Zaraisk performed the great consecration of the temple. In 1898, the dean of the churches of the first Yegoryevsky district, Archpriest Alexander Svetlov, consecrated two chapels of the temple.
At the request of the manufactory-adviser M.N. Bardygina I.T. Baryutin made a project for a three-tier bell tower 67 meters high and a project for expanding the temple. In 1907, construction began on the bell tower, which was completed in 1914 and gave the temple a finished look. But the project I.T. Baryutin's plan to expand the temple remained unfulfilled due to the 1917 revolution.
On April 23, 1941, a decision was made by the executive committee of the Moscow Regional Council: “To close the Alexander Nevsky Church and convert the building into a cinema.” The church was closed, but was not converted into a club. The temple was completely destroyed and looted. After a long correspondence, at the end of 1945 the church was returned to the parishioners and in the spring of 1946 the temple opened to believers. On the day of Holy Easter in 1946, the first service took place. A choir was formed in the temple, the regent of which was S.S. Kholmogorov. In 1962, the executive committee of the regional Council of Workers' Deputies in Yegoryevsk abolished the ringing of bells. At the same time, religious processions were prohibited.
In the 1980s, a two-story church house with a baptismal temple was built next to the temple in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov. In 1988, bell ringing was officially allowed, but there were no more bells left in the bell tower. Since 1992, a Sunday school has been operating at the cathedral.
On October 14, 2006, Archbishop of Mozhaisk Gregory (Chirkov) consecrated 11 new bells, the largest of which weighs three and a half tons. On September 12, 2007, the same bishop consecrated the newly built altars in three altars. On September 9, 2011, a particle of the relics of St. Meletius of Ryazan was transferred to the Alexander Nevsky Church. The ark with part of the holy relics is installed on the sole in front of the iconostasis of the central altar.
In 2010, a complete scientific restoration of the temple's paintings began under the direction of L.Yu. Yasnova, head of the Department of Painting Restoration of the Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 2012, the iconostases were restored: using photographs from the early twentieth century in the Mstera icon painting workshop, under the direction of S.N. Sukhov, new icons were painted for the three iconostases of the temple.
On February 28, 2012, Metropolitan Yuvenaly (Poyarkov) of Krutitsky and Kolomna consecrated new gilded domes and crosses, which were installed on the temple on March 4.
History of construction
The reason for its creation was the events of another attempt on the life of Emperor Alexander II. In the spring of 1879, the head of Yegoryevsk proposed building the Nevsky Church in the city in honor of the fact that the ruler remained alive as a result of a terrorist attack. Soon a special construction commission was assembled, which consisted of ten entrepreneurs. City manager N. Bardygin was appointed chairman, who was the first to make a donation of 3,000 rubles.
Temple of Alexander Nevsky in Yegoryevsk
- In 1881, the Ecclesiastical Consistory received drawings of the future structure. They decided to name the church in honor of Prince A. Nevsky. The author of the project was the architect A. Kaminsky. During preparation for construction, on the street. A small house chapel was built on Shirokaya.
- The laying of the first stone took place in 1882, and engineer N. Weiss was appointed chief caretaker. The construction of the A. Nevsky Temple began with money from the city treasury, as well as with charitable contributions from ordinary residents, wealthy manufacturers and merchants. One of the landowners generously donated all his estate for construction needs and died in complete poverty in 1886.
- In the spring of 1885, the Ryazan architect A. Krivtsov inspected the building, after which he asked Archbishop Theoktist to urgently stop the work, surround the place with a fence and completely dismantle the church, since cracks were discovered on the vault, which posed a great threat to safety. The author of the project put forward another solution to this problem. He proposed attaching pilasters to the main pillars of the building, on which the second arches would be installed.
- In mid-autumn 1886, Archpriest Alexander (Svetlov) made a statement that the main part of God's house was erected and covered with iron. However, at this time, interior finishing work had not yet been carried out, and the creation of the refectory and bell tower had not yet begun. Work stopped for an indefinite period after the death of chief engineer N. Weiss.
Interior of the temple - The city manager N. Bardygin hired the Safronov masters to paint the interior of the temple. The walls were decorated with elegant ornaments based on biblical scenes. The Church of A. Nevsky was initially distinguished by golden tones and lush decoration; parishioners were impressed by the massive and decorative chandeliers, candlesticks and banners similar in style. The rite of great consecration took place in 1897, performed by the Venerable Bishop Meletius (Yakimov).
Interesting! In 1891, when the workers completed the creation of the refectory room, a special commission headed by the architect A. Krivtsov came from Ryazan for the second time. They again inspected the church building and forbade consecrating the temple, since the cracks still posed a threat of collapse. Similar resolutions continued to come to the city government afterwards. However, no prohibitions or strict regulations prevented the chief architect from continuing construction and improving the interior.
Saints[edit]
- Venerable Martyr Evgenia (Lysova), nun
In 1931, after the closure of the Theological Monastery in the Ryazan region, where Evgenia served, returning to her native place, she participated in organizing assistance to imprisoned nuns (providing food and warm things) until she herself was arrested. Answering the investigator’s questions, Evgenia said: “After the death of her parents... I began to lead a monastic life, I went and now go to church, I serve with the priest... and I hold on to this life...” She was arrested several times and sentenced to exile, one of the stages turned out to be so hard that she could not bear the hardships. Nun Evgenia (Lysova) died in custody on November 17, 1935 and was buried in an unknown grave.

Znamenny chant
In our church, once a month on Saturdays, services are held in the Old Russian Znamenny chant, which was sung in Rus' until the 17th century. Now this is how they sing in some churches and monasteries, as well as in communities of the same faith. This singing came to us from Byzantium along with the Christian faith, sung by everyone in one voice according to the “hooks” - signs (banners), which took their development from various stresses over the Church Slavonic text. Znamenny singing is especially conducive to prayer and has healing properties for the soul.
You can find out more about the znamenny chant on the website of Father Paul (Korotkikh) and listen to the ipakoi on our YouTube channel.
You can also listen to the Znamenny chant performed by Maxim Kharaput, our Sunday School teacher.
