The history of the Orthodox Church in the North Caucasus goes back to apostolic times. There is evidence that the apostles Andrew the First-Called, Simon the Canaanite and Bartholomew preached here; numerous material monuments speak of the early rooting of Christianity. Subsequently, the weakening of the Eastern Roman Empire, the spread of Islam and the Mongol-Tatar invasion led to the extinction of Christianity in the North Caucasus after the 12th-13th centuries.

Its revival began from the time of Tsar John IV Vasilyevich, when, after the capture of Astrakhan, the Russian Cossacks set up their outposts here, and behind them came settlers who erected Orthodox churches. In 1602, the Astrakhan diocese was founded, which later included the Terek region.

The territory of the diocese was huge and, in the absence of safe and convenient means of communication, the connection between the Terek region and the see was weak, probably not extending beyond the consecration of clergy by the Astrakhan bishop for Cossack settlements. For more successful care of the region, the Novocherkassk diocese was established in 1829, and from it in 1842 or 1843 [1] the Caucasian diocese was separated with a department in Stavropol.

The first bishop of the Caucasus, Jeremiah (Soloviev), found his flock in an unkind and wavering state, but during his less than ten-year term as a bishop, he established a theological seminary (in 1846) and began the construction of churches. Among his successors, Saints Ignatius (Brianchaninov) and Theophylact (Gubin), who ruled the diocese from 1857 to 1872, stand out.

With the development of church life, the need arose to divide the diocese for better management. On April 23, 1885, the Terek region was separated from the diocese and annexed to the Vladikavkaz region. Soon, another part of the Caucasian diocese was annexed to Sukhumi, and the department itself was renamed Stavropol.

Under the last pre-revolutionary bishop of Stavropol, Metropolitan Agathodorus (Preobrazhensky), missionary work especially developed among the peoples of the North Caucasus. On October 12, 1916, the Kuban vicar diocese became semi-independent.

On May 19-24, 1919, the South Russian Council of Bishops cut off from Patriarch Tikhon by the civil war was held in Stavropol, at which issues of the structure of the Church in the territories free from the Bolsheviks were resolved. At the same Council, the need was recognized to separate the Kuban Vicariate of the Stavropol See into an independent diocese, which followed in the same year.

From 1923 to 1945 there was a renovationist diocese of the same name [2].

The persecution of the Orthodox Church in the first decades of the Soviet period reduced the diocese to nothing by 1936 - bishops occupied the see for an average of only about a year before they were arrested by the OGPU, and most of the churches were destroyed or taken away. In Stavropol, for example, there was only one Assumption Church, while before 1917 there were more than twenty Orthodox churches in the city. By 1936, the diocese ceased to exist, but in 1943, with a turn in state policy towards the Church, it was revived. Some churches were opened, and the Stavropol Theological Seminary was recreated. The restored diocese included the lands of the former Vladikavkaz diocese as well as parishes in Azerbaijan. However, in 1958, a new round of struggle between the communist regime and the Church began, churches were again closed and destroyed, and the seminary was closed.

The year of the millennium of the Baptism of Rus' was marked by changes for the better in church life, and after the fall of the atheistic system, church life began to recover. Over the next twenty years, the number of parishes in the diocese increased fourfold, the Stavropol Theological Seminary was revived, Orthodox secondary gymnasiums and schools, and kindergartens were opened. On February 26, 1994, the vicar Baku department was established. On October 6, 1995, the independent Elista diocese within Kalmykia was separated from the Stavropol diocese. On December 28, 1998, the independent Baku diocese was also separated from Stavropol, incorporating the territory of Azerbaijan, Dagestan and Chechnya. On December 26, 2003, parishes on the territory of the Chechen Republic were returned to the jurisdiction of the Stavropol diocese.

Due to the increase in existing churches and monasteries in the diocese, as well as due to the tragic events in the North Caucasus requiring urgent attention, at the request of Archbishop Feofan of Stavropol, by decision of the Holy Synod of October 6, 2008, a vicar with the title Mikhailovsky was appointed to assist the ruling bishop, however the ordination of Roman (Lukin), who was elected to this see, did not take place, and no other vicar was appointed.

On March 22, 2011, the Mineralovodsky, Predgorny and Kirov districts in the south of the Stavropol Territory, the republics of Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia were separated from the Stavropol diocese (to the revived Pyatigorsk diocese); the republics of North Ossetia-Alania, Ingushetia and Chechnya (to the revived Vladikavkaz diocese). Thus, most of the Stavropol region was left under the jurisdiction of the Stavropol department.

On June 7, 2012, the St. George diocese was also separated from the Stavropol diocese, after which Andropovsky, Apanasenkovsky, Grachevsky, Izobilnensky, Ipatovsky, Kochubeevsky, Krasnogvardeysky, Novoaleksandrovsky, Petrovsky, Trunovsky, Turkmensky and Shpakovsky districts remained within the diocese, as well as adjacent cities in the north -west of the Stavropol region. At the same time, the department was determined to be the center of the Stavropol Metropolis.
