There are quite a large number of different Orthodox churches around the world. The Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki deserves special attention. It has an extraordinary history. This is an ancient church, inside of which there is real beauty and miraculous holy images. If possible, you should definitely visit it at least once.
Dowry of a young bride
The year 1720 turned out to be a happy year for the hereditary Moscow noblewoman Anna Mikhailovna Pronchishcheva - God sent her a husband, and not just any husband, but a respectable man, a state councilor. As a dowry, her parents gave her a wasteland, located where the houses of the Academichesky district of the capital now stand, and bought in ancient years by her great-grandfather Nikolai Alekseevich.
That’s where the young people settled, building the Troitskoye-Cheryomushki estate. Why Trinity? In honor of the stone church of the same name, erected on its territory next to the spacious manor house. It stood exactly on the spot where today the new Church of the Life-Giving Trinity was built in Starye Cheryomushki.
Subsequent fate of the temple and estate
Subsequently, the estate changed hands many times, but since most of the time it was owned by the family of the Moscow rich man N.P. Andreev, who bought it in 1810, it began to be called Troitskoye-Andreevo.
This first Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki stood until 1879, but, having fallen into extreme disrepair, was completely rebuilt by the priest Father John (Zabavin). The necessary funds for the work were donated by one of the pious parishioners of the temple, S. N. Tikhonov. The previous building was completely dismantled, and a new one was erected in its place, to which a bell tower made in the neoclassical style was subsequently added.
History and fate of the temple
One day, Moscow noblewoman A.M. Pronchishcheva was getting married. Her future husband was a respectable and stately adviser. Her parents decided to give away the wasteland in honor of her dowry. Now this place is the Academichesky district of the Russian capital. In those years, as soon as the parents transferred part of the land to their daughter, a young family settled in this place.
They built an estate. It was called Trinity - Cheryomushki. It received this name due to the fact that nearby on its territory there was an old church built of stone. The estate passed from owner to owner many times. But most of the time it belonged to the rich man Andreev, so it began to be called Trinity - Andreevo.

The original temple that stood on this territory existed until 1879, but due to old age it began to collapse. For this reason, it was completely rebuilt by the priest John Zabavin.
During the period of persecution, the temple experienced a similar fate to many churches of that time. He was selected by the Bolsheviks. They threw all the crosses, domes and other church symbols onto the ground and desecrated it. There was a warehouse for sports equipment in the temple premises. And in 1963 the temple was completely destroyed.
The temple was completely restored only in 1998. This year, a group was organized that turned to the patriarch for support for the restoration of the church. By 2005, it was completely restored and resumed its work. It contains such shrines and miraculous images as:
- icon of the Savior not made by hands,
- holy icon of the Kazan Mother of God,
- a piece of the Tree from the Cross of the Lord.
Every day a large number of parishioners visit it to pray to the saints and ask for help in various everyday situations. After the services, believers have the opportunity to order prayer services and memorial services. There is also a Sunday school at the church. Religious teachings and education of children and adults are carried out. Every Friday at 19:00 in the evening special conversations are held for adults who wish to receive the sacrament of Baptism.

Desecration of a shrine
During the period of persecution of the church that followed the Bolsheviks’ rise to power, the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki fully shared the fate of most Russian shrines. Until 1935, his community somehow resisted attacks from the organizers of numerous anti-religious campaigns, but the forces turned out to be too unequal. The group of believers could not go against the prevailing state policy for a long time, and as a result, the temple was taken away from them.
The building, which was once built with donations from the pious merchant Tikhonov, was distinguished by its excellent strength, and the new masters of life, having thrown crosses, domes and other symbols alien to their ideology onto the ground, placed an artel producing sports equipment in the desecrated temple.
Death of the temple
In 1963, the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki was completely destroyed, as it was located on a site that was included within the city limits, and its development was carried out in accordance with the master plan approved by the highest authorities. Based on this document, a swimming pool was built where the temple of God had previously stood, but very soon, according to the testimony of the Muscovites themselves, it turned into a garbage dump.

The Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki first mentioned in the order of Empress Anna Ioannovna of 1732, where it was ordered to consecrate the church and issue the Antimins at the request of State Councilor A.T. Rzhevsky - it was he who owned the village, and, accordingly, the monastery.
It is known that in 1879 a new one was erected on the site of the old temple building. The construction was organized by the priest Ioann Zabavin, and the Moscow merchant Stepan Tikhonov acted as a philanthropist. And before the First World War, a bell tower was erected above the entrance in the then fashionable neoclassical style.
After the October Revolution, the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki did not close immediately, but only in 1935. Its premises were given first to the soybean trust, then to the sports association.
However, in 1963, the monastery was completely destroyed when Cheryomushki, which became part of Moscow, was liquidated. A swimming pool was built on the site of the temple, which did not last long and turned into a garbage dump.

In 1997, on the initiative of residents of the Academichesky district, the restoration of the monastery began. It so happened that the design work was delayed. The first project of the architect Pavel Parshikov was not accepted, because it did not meet the goals of the parishioners; the second was taken on by Mikhail Pankratov; Alexander Kornyukov worked on the chapel project, and the Sunday school, gatehouse and clergy house were built according to the sketches of Z. A Zagurskaya. And these are not all the specialists working on the project.
Construction began in 2001. There was no targeted funding, donations from individuals and organizations were inconsistent and scattered, so the temple was completed only in 2005. Interesting fact: once upon a time there was a pond on the site of the temple, so when 6-meter piles were driven in, they did not reach the bottom and were replaced with 9-meter ones.
The main altar was consecrated in honor of the Life-Giving Trinity, and the other two - in the name of the holy righteous Alexy of Moscow (in the world Alexei Mechev) and Metropolitan Vladimir of the Epiphany.
The restored Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki was built in the Russian pattern style. It is five-domed, with a hipped bell tower above the entrance, spacious and bright. Its arched architecture seems to expand the interior space.

The interior is decorated with paintings on the walls, gilded icons and carved iconostases made by craftsmen from Sergiev Posad. The exterior is bright and elegant. The building is decorated with kokoshniks and arches on drums, cornices in the form of scallops and inverted triangles, flies (square recesses) around the perimeter, and also an interesting combination of tall narrow windows with decorative round windows.
Today, the church has a Sunday school, a “Historical Reconstruction” club, and Gospel talks for young people under the age of 30; Various concerts are held.
The period of spiritual revival of the country
The opportunity to bring the trampled shrine back to life appeared for residents of the area only with the onset of perestroika. In 1997, an initiative group was created that turned to the patriarch personally for support. His Holiness not only supported their endeavor, but also provided practical assistance, blessing the creation of a parish community. Soon after this, a meeting was held, during which the composition of the parish council was approved and its chairman was elected.
The last decade of the last century has become a truly fertile period. The new democratic government radically changed its attitude towards religion, putting a lot of effort into restoring previously destroyed shrines.
A shrine revived from oblivion
Already in March 1999, a place was allocated for future construction. The start of work was preceded by a long period of obtaining permits and creating an architectural project, which was approved in the spring of 2001. It is based on authentic archival materials, thanks to which the current Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki, photos of which are given in the article, is as close in appearance as possible to what was once destroyed by a decree of the atheistic authorities.
Hundreds of people took part in the restoration work - both professionals and their volunteer assistants. Their work was crowned with a worthy reward - in 2005, on the map of Orthodox Moscow, another one was added to its previous shrines - the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki, address: st. Shvernika, 17, building 1, page 1.
Over the past decade, the temple has firmly taken one of the leading places among the spiritual centers of the capital. The organization of its religious life is led by Archpriest Father Nikolai (Karasev), appointed back in 1999, one of those people whose labors revived the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Starye Cheryomushki from oblivion.
