A temple is being built on Borisov Ponds in honor of the Miracle of the Archangel Michael in Khoneh

“The temple complex is being built in stone, in a picturesque place on Borisov Ponds,” noted Sergei Levkin, head of the Moscow Department of Urban Development Policy.

The temple will have five domes, with a belfry. It was created according to an individual design by the architect Vladimir Medievsky in the old Pskov style.

Sergei Lyovkin said that the construction of the temple is being carried out within the framework of the Program for the construction of new Orthodox churches in the capital, the project was not chosen for it by chance. To make the temple visible from afar, it was placed on a four-meter stylobate. The entire temple complex will be located in one building. In the lower part there will be a parish house, where there will be a Sunday school, rooms for clubs and activities necessary and useful for parishioners. The temple itself will be located higher. An elevator is provided for people with limited mobility.

Traditionally visiting the construction of churches in the capital, Vladimir Resin, adviser to the Mayor of Moscow and Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill, who oversees the Program for the construction of Orthodox churches in the capital, noted that a large plot of land has been allocated for the temple, which is located on the banks of the Moscow River, surrounded by a birch grove, adjacent to the Brateevsky Landscape Park, beloved by residents of the entire area. The curator of the Program said that the temple on Borisov Ponds will have its own feature, which has no analogues in Moscow yet, and which will allow this object to be included in the tourist map of Moscow. Thanks to this, tourists and pilgrims could visit holy places and get acquainted with the history of the city on an interesting river excursion.

Today the temple is practically built, the domes with crosses have been raised. Builders are completing the installation of the roof and laying the heating pipe. The facility is scheduled to be put into operation next year.

The program for the construction of Orthodox churches is being implemented entirely on donations. To raise funds, a charitable Fund “Support for the construction of churches in the city of Moscow” was created, the co-chairs of the board of trustees of which are the Mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin and the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Kirill.

Along with the construction of new churches, the Program involves a wide range of work on the restoration of historical and Orthodox sites, of which there are many in Moscow today.

The program for the construction of Orthodox churches demonstrates not only the great need of Muscovites for churches within walking distance, but also a huge palette of architectural solutions, styles, revived traditions of Russian architecture, and technologies used.

Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity

At the beginning of the 20th century, the idea arose of creating a temple-monument dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the victory over Napoleon. Emperor Nicholas II himself proposed building a church in memory of the victorious battles in Borisov and near the village of Studenka, on the Berezina River. Architect Fomin began designing the temple. It was supposed to be a rotunda - a low, round building, topped with a dome, with columns.

However, turbulent and tragic events (three revolutions, the First World War, the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War, persecution of the Church) did not allow this project to come to fruition. But the construction of the temple-monument to the soldiers who died in that distant war, although almost a hundred years late, began. This was already a completely different time, different from the previous one. Cooperation between the state and the Belarusian Orthodox Church began to be actively implemented. Great interest in the creation of the temple was then shown by the former chairman of the Borisov City Executive Committee, Viktor Lyudvigovich Kapultsevich, whose son Archpriest Andrei Kapultsevich is now the rector of the parish of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in the village of Zembin, Borisov district. The mayor of the city also provided specific assistance in the construction of the temple-monument, including financial assistance, and helped raise the necessary funds through sponsors. A native of Borisov, he wanted the Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity to be not only a spiritual center, but also to reflect the glorious history of the city. The author of the new project was Borisov architect Dontsov. The location chosen for the temple was very convenient, clearly visible from all sides, since it is located on a hill. Opposite is the local history museum, where every visitor has the opportunity to get acquainted with exhibits reflecting the events of the Patriotic War of 1812.

Archpriest Mikhail Barashko, who at the same time headed the parish of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Bolshaya Ukholoda, Borisov district, was appointed rector of the parish. He immediately began actively implementing this project, and construction began. In 1997, Metropolitan Philaret of Minsk and Slutsk, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus, consecrated the foundation stone. Gradually, with God's help, with the help of construction organizations and parishioners, the ground floor of the temple was erected and covered. But they soon ran into difficulties. When the chairman of the Borisov City Executive Committee V.L. Kapultsevich moved to another job, construction funding and other necessary assistance were significantly reduced. Under these conditions, Father Mikhail, without abandoning his plans to build the Trinity Church, together with local benefactors, decided to build a small church-chapel, begin to pray, lead parish life, and then gradually complete the construction of the main church. The temple-chapel was named in honor of the Holy Epiphany. In 2010, due to deteriorating health, Archpriest Mikhail Barashko submitted a petition to Bishop Philaret to transfer him as rector to another parish, which was granted.

His work was continued by Archpriest Georgy Tyukhlov, who was appointed rector of the parish of the Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity in 2010. “When I came here,” says Father George, “even though there was no roof here, we started with prayer. The first was a prayer service with an akathist to the Holy Life-Giving Trinity. In warm and dry weather we prayed on the foundation of this temple-chapel, and during the rains we hid in the basement. It was uncomfortable there, there was water, but we stacked shelves, made a small hill, set up a lectern, lit a candle, because there was no electricity yet, and prayed in this darkness, dampness and cold. The roof was covered at the beginning of 2012. It was almost winter already. And in April 2012, on the day of Holy Easter, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated. At that time, there were still a lot of deficiencies in the chapel, there were scaffoldings, ceilings were being made, the walls, although plastered, were not painted, you could feel the cold, since there was no heating. But this was already the beginning, and everyone had joy in their souls. So in the future they combined worship and construction.” Since then, the construction of the Epiphany Church-Chapel has been largely completed.

Landscaping is currently underway. But life is in full swing around the still “frozen” construction of the Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity. On the roof of the church’s basement, on the patronal feast day, divine services are held, concerts are held, where amateur artists, parishioners, the folk chamber choir “Transfiguration”, and the folk choir “Svetoch” perform spiritual chants. A big event in the life of the parish was the transfer of a memorial plaque in memory of Ivan Khrisanfovich Kolodeev. He was not only a famous bibliophile, a philanthropist, a man who made a huge contribution to the cultural and economic development of the city of Borisov. It was Kolodeev who made great efforts to have a temple erected in the city in honor of the soldiers who died during the Patriotic War of 1812. For now, the memorial plaque is located in the Epiphany Church-Chapel, and after completion of construction it will be installed in the Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity. The memory of the soldiers who laid down their lives for the Fatherland is incorruptible. Some time will pass, and a majestic temple-monument will appear in the city of Borisov, where they will honor and remember the heroes not only of the War of 1812, but also all those who performed an immortal feat in the name of the Fatherland, who defended our Orthodox faith in fierce battles .

Retrospective: in the year of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus', a competition was held to design an anniversary temple

At the meeting of the Holy Synod on May 14, 2021, its participants had a judgment on the celebration of the 1030th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia. In this regard, in this publication we recall the events of 30 years ago, when a competition was announced for the design of a temple in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus'.

In 1988, in the year of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus', it was decided to build a complex of the Patriarchal Compound in Orekhovo-Borisovo, not far from Borisov Ponds. A competition was announced for the design of a temple in memory of the anniversary being celebrated. It was planned to build a cathedral with a capacity of more than 20,000 people, surrounded by various administrative buildings.

About 420 projects were presented to the jury, which included representatives of the Patriarchate, the Ministry of Culture, and the Union of Architects.

Competition project for a memorial church for the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus'. Archit. Y. Alonov, O. Alonova, V. Malgin, 3. Osipova.

The open competition for the temple-monument to the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus' was completely untargeted. His program assumed the presence of many auxiliary premises at the temple, which caused a discussion. Thus, the Kudryavtsev architects criticized this approach and Fr.

Another very important issue is the materials and structures used in the construction of the temple. The competition program states: “The structure of the temple-monument should be made from modern building materials and structures with brick cladding...”. Since brick is mentioned as a facing material, it is clear that modern materials and structures can mean a metal frame, monolithic concrete, glass. In principle, it is clear that the loss of the building traditions of the past and skilled craftsmen makes the construction of such a huge temple a very difficult problem.

Four projects entered the second round, held in March-September 1990: A. Polyansky; I. Pokrovsky; G. Zosimova; Yu. Ratushny, A. Protasov, E. Rykov.

The program and conditions of the second round of the competition were changed in connection with the following tasks set at the meeting of the Holy Synod:

— The temple must express through the means of architecture and monumental art the theme of the triumph of Orthodoxy, the theme of the millennium of existence of the Orthodox Church in Rus', its holiness.

— The temple should not only be a place for believers to gather for prayer, but also be, in its expression, a monument to the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus'.

— The temple must carry and develop the traditions of Russian church architecture and be equipped with the latest engineering communications.

“The authors should achieve the goals set not by the enormous size of the temple, but by the expressiveness of the architectural and artistic solution and its delicate comparison with the historical ensemble of Tsaritsyno.”

— Apply constructive solutions without internal support pillars that interfere with visibility.

— The temple, with a capacity of 5,000 people, is intended for constant and solemn services with the fulfillment of all the Sacraments and requirements.

The project of academician of architecture A.T. Polyansky won in the second round.

As a result of the competition, I. A. Bondarenko published an article: “A thousand-year tradition: possibilities of interpretation,” containing the idea of updating the traditional forms of the Russian temple not through “modernizing” the heritage, but, on the contrary, through spiritual immersion in the past.

But construction at that time never began due to the fact that all finances were thrown at parish churches, which were more in need of real support than the construction of one cathedral.

Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus', on Borisov Ponds

And only after the opening of the cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church - the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 2000, they remembered the plan 12 years ago - the construction of the Patriarchal Compound in memory of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus'.

Competitive projects were raised and it was decided to choose the best one, modifying it for the current conditions

Subsequently, the temple dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus' was built in the Orekhovo-Borisovo area according to a completely different project.

The project was carried out by the architectural studio AM-19 of Mosproekt-2 under the leadership of V. Kolosnitsyn, the main architect of the project was E. V. Ingema.

The temple, designed in the neo-Byzantine style, is a single-domed cruciform building with four chapels; height with cross – 70 m; capacity – up to 4000 people. In the basement there is a baptistery for adult baptism through total immersion. The porcelain iconostasis is made in the traditions of the Kuznetsov workshops of the 19th century.

The complex of the Patriarchal Metochion on Borisov Ponds also includes a clergy house, a Sunday school, a belfry and a chapel in the name of St. blgv. book Alexander Nevsky.

The construction was carried out by the Baltic Construction Company (BSK).

V. Vorobiev and S. Savina participated in the development of the interior decoration concept. The painting project was approved by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus' in 2004 and was carried out by a team of icon painters under the leadership of V. I. Nesterenko.

In Orekhov-Borisov, by 1996, the second largest church in the capital was built - the Cathedral of the Life-Giving Trinity, which can accommodate up to three thousand people. It became the center of a larger new complex - the Patriarchal Metochion in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus'. The complex, visible from the Kashirskoye Highway, includes the buildings of the Patriarchal Metochion, which include, at the rear of the cathedral, the chapel of the blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky, a belfry, a Sunday school building and a clergy house with administrative premises. The idea of building an administrative center of the Russian Orthodox Church originated in 1988, the year of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus'. A competition was held, in which the project of architect A.T. won. Polyansky. But the start of work was postponed; Polyansky died in 1993, without starting construction. They returned to the project thirteen years later, and it was completely redone. The church area was reduced more than five times, and it amounted to 1,100 square meters. In October 2000, the Baltic Construction Company began construction work. Already in 2001, a church complex began to grow before our eyes. The first completed building was the chapel in the name of the blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky. A little later, the builders erected a bell tower, on the sides of which there are chapels. The shapes of the bell tower in miniature repeat the Trinity Church. The lower tier of the belfry is the gateway to the entire complex; it is the road from Kashirskoye Highway that approaches it over a bridge. By the beginning of 2004, construction was completed. Particularly labor-intensive work was carried out on the interior decoration of the temple, where expensive materials were used - marble, gilding. In addition, a porcelain iconostasis made by the St. Petersburg art and restoration workshop “Guild of Masters” by Yuri Volkotrub was brought to the cathedral, which is distinguished by its grace and the highest execution. The painting work was carried out under the guidance of the Honored Artist of Russia Vasily Nesterenko. The group of icon painters was led by Anna Belyanova. On May 19, 2004, the church was consecrated and the first liturgy was served. The temple was built in the Byzantine style. This is a single-domed cubic building, to which semi-circular exedra are attached on all four sides, while the plan of the temple turned out to be cruciform. In the eastern exedra there is the main altar, in the side chapels there are chapels, and in the western exedra there is a vestibule. The temple is covered with a powerful sail vault resting on the walls, as in ancient Byzantine buildings. The building is completed with a powerful dome, in the drum of which there are twelve windows according to the number of apostles. The huge spherical ribbed dome is painted bright blue - a symbol of the Mother of God and angelic powers. The temple seems multi-domed, since the shape of the dome is repeated by the semi-domes of the exedra, almost equal in diameter to the main dome. The bell tower facing the west is completed with the same, only smaller, domes and half-domes. The walls are painted a warm pinkish color, somewhat reminiscent of the color of the walls of the first ancient Russian churches in Kyiv and Novgorod. A two-story parable building was also built on the territory of the Patriarchal Compound. An underground passage was made from the clergy's house to the temple. The complex also includes a Sunday school building. The buildings of the complex, both church and secular, are decorated with mosaics made in the workshop of Ekaterina Ogorodnikova in St. Petersburg. The complex of the Patriarchal Compound also included a baptistery, which is a separate room that allows for the baptism of everyone - from infants to the elderly. The Patriarchal Compound is connected to the Kashirskoye Highway by a white-stone arched pedestrian bridge leading to the gate bell tower. Mikhail Vostryshev “Orthodox Moscow. All the temples and chapels." Gate bell tower

The height of the belfry is 15 m Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Orekhov-Borisov Address: Moscow, Kashirskoe highway, vl.61a Website https://www.1000let.ru/

When designing the bell tower, the developers considered two options: to build it as a free-standing one or as a gate tower. The decision was made in favor of the gate. And indeed, the choice turned out to be successful: the belfry became a decoration of the temple complex, while fulfilling its direct function. It owes its non-standard size to the central entrance to the complex, located under the bell tower. The belfry was built in record time, but finishing the exterior with marble decorations took a lot of time. The rounded shape, blue dome, marble decorations - everything is chosen in the same style as the entire complex. When choosing bells, the Baltic Construction Company chose Voronezh products. Back in 2001, 11 bells were brought (the largest of them weighs almost 2500 kilograms), which were installed on the belfry only in 2002, and already in 2003 a platform was erected on the belfry and a “control system” was installed. It should be noted that throughout the three years of construction, the bells never stopped and accompanied weekly Sunday prayer services with the reading of akathists.
