Priest Mikhail Zheltov. "The Word of St. Gregory on the Holy Liturgy"

Medieval revelation-interpretation of the Divine Liturgy

Among the various medieval commentaries on the Divine Liturgy, “The Word of St. Gregory about St. liturgy." This commentary was written in the 12th century using earlier stories from the patericon[1]. Its translation is widely represented in ancient Russian manuscripts and, in particular, was included in Chrysostom, one of the books of statutory liturgical readings[2]. As N.F. Krasnoseltsev, the great Russian scientist of the late 19th century, proved, “The Word of St. Gregory" is the basis of the "Explanatory Service" - the most popular Donikon commentary on the liturgy[3], which even had semi-canonical status, since it was included in the Helmsman's books.

Images from “The Words of St. Gregory" were included in the iconographic programs of some Russian churches[4]. The text of the commentary is rarely found in Greek manuscripts, since it is still clearly apocryphal. According to one of them (Paris, Coisl. 296), several years ago we published it in its entirety for the first time [5], although fragments of the Greek text of the commentary served as captions for a series of book miniatures in the Vatican manuscript. gr. 2137, were published by A. Mai back in the middle of the 19th century[6].

The Divine Liturgy in the commentary is revealed as a mystical secret act performed in the temple by angels in parallel with the visible rites. Among the elements of the rite of the liturgy, the following are mentioned: proskomedia, peaceful litany, three antiphons, small entrance, prokeimenon, Apostle, alleluia, Gospel, litany of the catechumens, great entrance, Eucharistic prayer (anaphora), “Our Father”, exclamation of the priest “Holy to holies” ( which the compiler of the commentary, following the more ancient patericon stories, gives a very special meaning), communion and the end of the liturgy.

Below is our translation of the commentary into modern Russian from the Paris, Coisl manuscript. 296, using the text of another Greek manuscript from the Escorial collection[7]. The translation is accompanied by miniatures from the Vatican. gr. 2137[8].

Disclosure[9] of the Holy Liturgy

1. [Once] the venerable fathers, having gathered with Saint Gregory the Theologian, said to him: “Reverend Father, teach us [that] that [pertains] to the Church, and how the Divine and intuited and bloodless Sacrifice is offered in heaven.”

Saint Gregory the Theologian with questioners. Fragment of the Vatican manuscript. gr. 2137

2. And Gregory the Theologian, answering, said: “Listen, my brothers.

3. [When] the priest, performing the proskomedia[10] of the Holy Gifts, said: “Let us pray to the Lord,” then I heard a voice from heaven calling and saying: “Which of you [among you] made church offerings according to the disposition of your heart?”[11] And an angel flew down from heaven and stood at the outer gate of the church vestibule.

4. And when the deacon says: “Forgive me! [12] Let us pray to the Lord in peace,” set your hearts [directly], to the fear of God, to the liturgy.

Beginning of the Divine Liturgy

5. And when [1st antiphon] is sung: “It is good to confess to the Lord,” I heard the angel say: “Rejoice [13] everyone and focus on the fear of God and on the liturgy.”

6. And when [2nd antiphon] is sung: “The Lord reigns,” the angel said: “And now he reigns!” Christian race, rejoice and be glad, for Christ reigns for endless centuries. The devil is no longer able to fight against man, for he is completely broken.”

7. And when the [3rd antiphon] is sung: “Come, let us rejoice in the Lord,” then I saw an angel at the royal and holy gates of the church.

8. And then the priest entered the altar and took the Gospel, and the deacon took the censer, and the sextons lit the candles and, passing, went out to the pulpit.

9. And when they said [at the small entrance], “Come, let us bow and fall,” I saw an angel stretch out his wings and embrace [them] the priest, and take him, and lead him inside the altar.

Small entrance

10. And when [the priest] placed the Holy Gospel on the holy throne, the angel lowered his wings and stood next to him and said: “Look how you stand at the Last Judgment.”

11. And when [the priest] moved to the pulpit [in the high place], Michael said: “Wisdom,” and Gabriel: “Let us attend,” and the Lord: “Peace to all,” and everything in the world was revealed. This is what [happens when] a priest teaches peace (that is, “Peace to all”) in the church, [so] stand everyone in peace, and let no one turn his head to meet [his gaze] with [another] person.

Shouts before the reading of the Apostle

13. And when the Apostle is read, [the Apostle himself] Paul teaches. And one hears: “Let [you all] know this.”

14. And when [the time] came for the holy [singing] “Alleluia,” David exclaims and says: “God will come, our God, and will not remain silent [14]; Fire will come before Him, and His enemies will burn all around[15] and the lightning of the evangelists will illuminate His universe[16].” And I heard an angel saying: “The Son of God is coming, broken in pieces and distributed to the faithful.”

15. And when [the time for reading] the Holy Gospel came, then I saw that the roof of the church opened, and the sky appeared [through it], and every word of the Gospel was like fire and reached to the sky.

Reading the Gospel

16. And when the deacon said: “The Catechumens,” I saw a man standing in the holy gates of the church, with sharp, arrow-like teeth and bloodshot eyes, and he was grinding his teeth on those standing in the church, as if to throw him out from the church of each of them.

17. And when the deacon said: “No one from the catechumens,” I saw the angel spread his wings and push that [man with sharp teeth] into the outer fire, saying to him: “Why are you standing here, not having a wedding garment?” - and [adding]: “You have no power here.”

18. And when the priest went to transfer the Holy [Gifts], I heard the angel say: “Holy Father, send Your secret guides, the angels, to minister the Divine mysteries.”

Great Entrance

19. And when the deacon said: “Let us become kind,” let us become fearful! - because what is happening is terrible.

20. And when the priest said: “Singing a song of victory,” then I saw that the roof of the church opened, and the sky appeared [through it], and a flash of flame came down, and after the flash many angels descended; and after the angels I saw two beautiful faces, the beauty of which cannot be described in words, for their radiance was like a flash of flame. And the angels spread their wings around the altar, and their six-winged faces around the holy throne. And in the midst of those [I saw] the Child [shining] like a flash of flame, and [this] flame descended on the priest, and [the] priest himself became a flash of flame, from head to nails.

Eucharistic prayer

21. And when the time for “Our Father” came, I heard the angel say: “Good and faithful fathers, if any of you was with his wife on [the past] Saturday, whether in reality or in a dream, he is not worthy of the most pure Body and the revered Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ."

22. And when the priest said: “Holy to holies,” then I saw that the mentioned faces became as if an altar, and I saw angels with knives in their hands, and they slaughtered the Child, and poured His Blood into the holy chalice, and cut the body into pieces [placed] on top of the bread. And the bread became the Body, and the wine and water in the chalice became the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

23. And the people came up and received communion, and those who did not say: “Amen” are unworthy of the Son of God.

Communion

24. And when the deacon said: “We will go out in peace,”[17] then I saw how the Divine mysteries ascended to heaven, and the church offerings ascended.”

25. And, having heard this and having experienced great shock, [the venerable fathers] were strengthened [in the faith] for endless centuries. Amen.

[9] Greek: Διάλυσις, literally “solution.”

[10] Greek πρόθεσις - Proposal.

[11] Here is a play on words: the Greek expression πρόθεσις καρδίας from the Septuagint (Prov. 16.1) echoes the name of the rite of proskomedia (πρόθεσις).

[12] Here it means: “faithful!”

[13] Here again there is a play on words - the call: “Rejoice...” (Ἀγαθυνθεῖτε...) plays on the first word of the antiphon (Ἀγαθὸν...).

[15] Ps. 96:4.

[16] Paraphrase of Ps. 76:18.

[17] Now this exclamation is pronounced by a priest, but in Byzantium and Rus' before Patriarch Nikon these were the words of a deacon.
