Temple of Elijah the Everyday Prophet

- parish Orthodox church in honor of the prophet Elijah (main altar) in Moscow.

History[[edit]h2>

Tsarist Russia[[edit]h3>

The temple, erected at the turn of the 16th-17th centuries, was originally wooden, most likely, it was built on the occasion of a drought. The date of its construction is not precisely known; The first mention of it dates back to the end of the 16th century. The existence of the church was confirmed by the Synodik, compiled under the reign of St. Patriarch Job between 1589 and 1607 and kept in the sacristy of the temple at the beginning of the 20th century. But the first mention of the temple is considered to be the work of Abraham Palitsyn “History in memory of a previous generation” (known as “The Legend of Abraham Palitsyn”), which described the events of 1584-1618. According to the “Tale”, on August 24, 1612, on the day of the decisive battle between the Russians and the Poles, Prince Dmitry Pozharsky served a prayer service before the image of the Holy Trinity, the Mother of God and the wonderworkers Sergius and Nikon, “praying for victory over the enemies in the place where there was an ordinary temple in the name of the holy prophet Elijah."

In the iconostasis of the main altar of the current church from this ancient wooden church, the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands (1675) and the Kazan Image of the Mother of God, painted by the leading royal iconographer Simon Ushakov, are supposedly preserved.

Probably, in the wooden church there were icons: the temple icon - of St. Elijah the Prophet with 20 marks of life, "The Holy Trinity of the Old Testament", the Vladimir image of the Mother of God, "The Beheading of St. John the Baptist", "St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (Zaraisky)".

In 1702, a stone church began to be built on the site of a wooden one, the altar part of which and the main building, built according to the “octagon on a quadrangle” type, have been preserved to this day in unchanged forms. Documentary evidence of the start of construction has been preserved in the book of contract records [4 [4] From this document it follows that the cathedral church of the Nikolo-Perervinsky Monastery was chosen as a model for construction, however, perhaps due to a lack of funds this plan was not realized, and on the site of the wooden church, not a two-story, but a one-story church with a seven-tier iconostasis was erected, the original frame of which has been preserved to this day. The creators of the temple, the Derevnin brothers, are reminded of the marble slabs located inside the temple [2 [2] The Synodal Directory stated: “Built in 1702 by the Duma clerk Gavriil Derevnin on the site of the former wooden one.”

On October 6, 1706, an antimension was issued to the built chapel of Simeon the God-Receiver and Anna the Prophetess, which was soon severely damaged during the fire of 1748 and was renewed “through the diligence and efforts of the foreman Nikita Andreevich Bolkunov.” In November 1819, the southern chapel was consecrated in the name of the apostles Peter and Paul.

The temple acquired its modern architectural appearance under the leadership of Archpriest Ioann Matveyevich Lebedev. It was a post-reform time when a lot was changing in Russia. At this time, there was a significant increase in the number of entrepreneurs, most of whom belonged to the merchant class. Many entrepreneurs were not only donors, but also personally participated in the parish life of churches, many were church elders.

In 1867, simultaneously with the appointment of Archpriest John Lebedev as rector, the merchant of the first guild, Vladimir Dmitrievich Konshin, became the church warden of the Elias Church. The abbot and the headman considered their first task to be a major overhaul of the refectory and bell tower due to a crack that had formed in the western part of the vault.

Konshin involved the architect A. S. Kaminsky in drawing up the project. Both were married to the sisters of P. M. Tretyakov, who often visited the Ilyinsky Church, since his mother Alexandra Danilovna lived nearby in 1865, and later, nearby, his brother Sergei Mikhailovich settled on Prechistensky Boulevard. Together with Konshin, the Tretyakovs donated a significant amount for the reconstruction of the temple and the construction of the bell tower. The consecration of the new refectory and bell tower was performed on June 9, 1868 by Metropolitan Innocent, who served his first liturgy in the church after arriving in the Moscow Metropolis.

V.D. Konshin was the initiator of the creation of the first parish school of the temple and became its trustee. Classes began in January 1875; The educational part was headed by the actual state councilor A. G. Kashkadamov. In 1882, a separate building for a school and an almshouse was built at the temple.

During the USSR[[edit]h3>

In 1930, the believers unanimously defended the temple from closure: on March 1, a resolution on closure was adopted, and on May 20, the authorities adopted a new resolution: “Bearing in mind that in the area where the church is being closed, 4 churches have already been closed: Antipyevskaya, Rzhevskaya, Barikovskaya and the Conception Monastery and that there is no particularly urgent need for the building of an ordinary church... leave the church to the believers.”

According to legend, the temple was going to be closed after the service on June 22, 1941, but the war began.

On June 15, 1944, the “Unexpected Joy” icon of the Mother of God, revered as a miraculous icon, was transferred here from the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Sokolniki. The temple houses a number of other shrines, in particular those related to the activities of Metropolitan Seraphim (Chichagov): the icon “The Savior in the White Tunic.” The height of the bell tower is 36 meters. On the southern side of the bell-ringing platform you can see the absence of an openwork forged lattice - a trace from the bell thrown down during the anti-religious campaign in 1940.

Eve

The commemoration of the dead in the temple takes place in a special place where a kanun is installed - a candlestick made in the form of a table with many cells for candles and a small Crucifix. On the eve they light candles, praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased, baptized in the Orthodox Church.

TROPARION, tone 8

With the depth of wisdom, build everything humanely, and give what is useful to everyone, O One Creator, rest, O Lord, the souls of Your servant: for I have placed my trust in You, the Creator and Maker and our God. Glory, even now: To you and the wall and refuge of the imams, and the Prayer Book favorable to God, Whom you gave birth to, the Blessed Mother of God, the salvation of the faithful.

Kontakion, tone 8

With the saints, rest your souls, O Christ, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life.

Ikos

Thou art the One Immortal One, who created and created man: on earth we were created from the earth, and to another earth we will go, as Thou hast commanded, Who created me and gave me: as Thou art the earth and returned to the earth, and even all men will go, creating a funeral lamentation song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

PRAYER FOR THE DECEASED CHRISTIAN

Remember, O Lord our God, in the faith and hope of the eternal life of Your departed servant, our brother (name), and as Good and Lover of mankind, forgiving sins and consuming untruths, weaken, forsake and forgive all his voluntary and involuntary sins, deliver him eternal torment and fire of Gehenna, and grant him the communion and enjoyment of Your eternal good things, prepared for those who love You: even if you sin, do not depart from You, and undoubtedly in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Your glorified God in the Trinity, Faith, and Unity in the Trinity and the Trinity in Unity, Orthodox even until his last breath of confession. Be merciful to him, and faith, even in You instead of deeds, and with Your saints, as You give generous rest: for there is no man who will live and not sin. But You are the One besides all sin, and Your righteousness is righteousness forever, and You are the One God of mercies and generosity, and love for mankind, and to You we send glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Akathist about the repose of the deceased

Kontakion 1

By an incomprehensible Providence, prepare the world for eternal good, determining the time and manner of death for everyone, forgive, Lord, the sins of those who have died from time immemorial, receive them into the abode of light and joy, and open the Father’s embrace to them graciously. Hear us, in memory of those who perform them and sing: Our Father, unspeakable Love, give rest to Thy servants who have fallen asleep.

Ikos 1 Saving fallen Adam and our entire race from eternal destruction, You sent, O God, Thy Son into the world; Through the Cross and His resurrection You gave us eternal life. Trusting in Your mercy, hoping for the imperishable Kingdom of Glory, we ask for a share in it for the departed and pray: Our Father, bring joy to the souls of the departed, tormented by the storms of life. Our Father, may they forget all the sorrows and sighs of earth. Our Father, comfort them in Your bosom, as a mother comforts her children. Our Father, tell them: your sins are forgiven. Our Father, receive them into Your blessed, quiet refuge. Our Father, open to them the chambers of the Angels and Saints. Our Father, may they rejoice in Your Divine glory. Our Father, grant Thy eternal blessings to our departed fathers and brothers. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 2 Illuminated by the Almighty, the Monk Macarius heard a voice from the pagan skull: “When you pray for those who suffer in hell, then there is joy for the pagan.” O the power of Christian prayers! With them the underworld is illuminated, with the faithful and the unfaithful they receive consolation, when we sing about the whole world: Alleluia.

Ikos 2 I remembered the word of Isaac the Syrian, who said: “A heart that is merciful for people and animals, and for all, and for all creation, brings prayer every hour with tears, so that they may be preserved and cleansed.” Therefore, we boldly ask the Lord for help to all those who have died since the ages, crying: Our Father, send us the gift of fiery prayer for the departed. Our Father, give us the zeal of Paul and Moses, who were ready to lose paradise for the salvation of their neighbors. Our Father, remember all those who commanded us, unworthy, to pray for them. Our Father, blot out the sins they have forgotten. Our Father, warm our hearts with pity for the enemies of the Truth. Our Father, have mercy on all those buried without prayerful guidance. Our Father, accept into Your villages those who suddenly died of grief or joy. Our Father, send peace and tranquility to the departed in the Holy Spirit. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 3 We are to blame for the disasters of the world, for the suffering of dumb creatures, for the torment of innocent children, for the bliss and beauty of creation was destroyed by the fall of people. Greatest of innocent sufferers, You, Lord, alone have the power to forgive everyone. Forgive, O God, and return ancient prosperity to the world, so that both the dead and the living will find peace, crying out: Alleluia.

Ikos 3 Quiet Light, Redeemer of the universe, I heard Your cry from the Cross about those who have attacked them: “Father, forgive them!” And in the name of Your forgiveness, we ourselves dare to pray to the Father for the eternal peace of Your and our enemies: Our Father, forgive those who shed innocent blood. Our Father, forgive those who have strewn our path with thorns and sorrows. Our Father, forgive those who built their well-being on the tears of their neighbor. Our Father, do not judge those who persecute us with slander and malice. Our Father, reward with mercy all those we have offended. Our Father, comfort all of us who have been offended through ignorance. Our Father, may this prayer for them be a sacrament of reconciliation. Our Father, destroy the manuscripts of the sins of our departed fathers and brothers. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 4 Lord, save those who died in severe torment, those killed, buried alive, swallowed up by waves and fire, torn to pieces by beasts, those who died from hunger, frost or falling from a height, and for the sorrow of their death grant them Your eternal joy, may they bless the time of their suffering , like the hour of redemption, singing: Alleluia.

Ikos 4 To all from whom You, Lord, took life in bright youth, to all whom You gave the crown of thorns of suffering, to all who have not known earthly happiness, You reward with the rays of Your beyond the grave endless love: Our Father, delight them with the sweetness of the gifts of Your Spirit. Our Father, reward those who died under the heavy burden of labor. Our Father, receive the departed youths and virgins into the palaces of heaven. Our Father, grant them joy at the Supper of Your Son. Our Father, soften the grief of parents over the loss of their children. Our Father, give rest to all the lonely, the orphaned and the poor, for whom there is no one to pray. Our Father, may their sins dry up in the rays of Your forgiveness. Our Father, give to Your servant, our father and our brothers who passed away before us, white, victorious clothes. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 5 As the last means for admonition and repentance of the human race, You, Lord, have granted death. With its menacing brilliance, earthly vanity is laid bare, carnal aspirations subside, the rebellious mind is humbled, and eternal truth is revealed. For this reason, sinners rooted in iniquity, on their deathbed confessing Your eternal Existence, cry out to Your mercy: Alleluia.

Ikos 5 Father of all comfort! You illuminate with the sun, You delight with fruits, You make Your friends and enemies happy with the beauty of the world. We believe that even beyond the grave, in eternity Your heart does not exhaust itself in mercy, having mercy on sinners rejected by all. Our Father, we mourn for the bitter and lawless blasphemers of the shrine. Our Father, may Your saving will be done over them. Our Father, have pity on those wounded by disastrous unbelief. Our Father, who did not know You on earth, may love You in heaven. Our Father, forgive those who died without repentance. Our Father, save those who have destroyed themselves in the darkening of their reason. Our Father, let the flame of their wickedness go out in the sea of Your goodness. Our Father, Conqueror of hell, deliver from condemnation in Gehenna all our departed fathers and brothers. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 6 The darkness of the soul removed from God, the torment of conscience, the gnashing of teeth, the unquenchable fire and the undying worm are terrible. I tremble at such fates, and as for myself, I pray for those suffering in hell, that our song may descend upon them like the dew of cooling: Alleluia.

Ikos 6 Where would Your light shine, O Christ God, if not on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death? This is how souls in hell remember You. Descend again into the underworld, bring to joy those separated from You by sins, but who have not renounced You. In the name of the Son and the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Father: Our Father, Thy children suffer, have mercy on them. Our Father, they have sinned in heaven and before You. Our Father, their sins are grave, but Your mercy is great and strong. Our Father, You sent Your Son to save sinners. Our Father, visit the bitter poverty of souls distant from You. Our Father, have mercy on those who persecuted the Truth out of ignorance. Our Father, may Your love be for them not like fire, but like the coolness of heaven. Our Father, deliver from the eternal flame our father and brothers who have gone to You. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 7 Although you gave a helping hand to the dead, O Lord, you allowed them to appear in dreams and visions to the living and inspire them to pray, so that, remembering with love those who have passed away, they do good deeds and deeds of faith in their memory, calling out with hope: Alleluia.

Ikos 7 The Church of Christ throughout the entire universe offers prayers every day for the departed, and every hour throughout the entire earth the sins of the world are washed away by the cleansing Blood of the Divine Lamb. From death to life and from earth to heaven, the souls of the departed ascend with the power of prayers for them before the Altar of the Lord. Our Father, may the intercession of the Church be a ladder to heaven for the dead. Our Father, have mercy on them for the intercession of the Most Pure Virgin and all the saints. Our Father, cleanse them for the sake of the faithful who cry out to You day and night. Our Father, for the sake of gentle babies, forgive their parents. Our Father, with the tears of mothers, atone for the sins of their children. Our Father, for the prayers of the innocent sufferers, for the blood of the martyrs, spare sinners. Our Father, accept our alms and prayers in remembrance of their virtues. Our Father, may the Blood of Your Son be the source of life for our fathers and brothers who are now remembered. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 8 The whole world is a common sacred grave, in every place there are the ashes of our brothers and fathers, created in the image of God and in the likeness, consanguineous to us after Adam. The only one who has always loved us, forgive all those who have died from the beginning to this day, so that they may sing of Your immortal love: Alleluia.

Ikos 8 Behold, the Day is coming like a burning furnace, a great and terrible Day, the Day of the Last Judgment. Human secrets will be revealed and the book of conscience will be opened. “Make your peace with God! - Paul cries, “before that terrible Day.” Help us, Lord, and with the tears of the living fill what is missing for the dead. Our Father, may the sound of the Archangel trumpet be the gospel of salvation to them and to us. Our Father, at the hour of Judgment grant them and us joyful mercy. Our Father, crown with glory the suffering of our neighbors. Our Father, cover with Your goodness the sins of the weak. Our Father, give Thy truth to those purified by the thunderstorm of earthly troubles. Our Father, who knows everyone by name, remember those who were saved in the monastic and secular ranks. Our Father, receive reverent shepherds with their spiritual children. Our Father, may Thy servants, whom we remember here, meet the Bridegroom Christ with burning lamps. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 9 Bless, do not destroy the fleeting time: every hour, every moment brings us closer to the grave. New sorrow, new gray hair are messengers from the coming world, they are witnesses of the corruption of the earth, they proclaim that everything is fleeting, that eternal happiness is approaching, where there are no tears, no sighs, but a joyful song: Alleluia.

Ikos 9 Just as a tree is stripped of its leaves in the fall, so our life hourly tends to impoverishment. The festival of youth fades, the lamp of joy goes out, alienated old age approaches, friends die, loved ones move away. Where are you before, young, joyful, happy? Their graves are silent and their souls are in Your right hand. Our Father, glances from the world beyond the grave call us to prayer. Our Father, bright Sun, illuminate and warm the villages of the departed. Our Father, may the bitter time of separation pass forever. Our Father, grant us a joyful meeting in heaven. Our Father, create that we may all be one with You. Our Father, return to those who have departed childish purity and youthful complacency. Our Father, may eternal life be for them the holiday of Easter. Our Father, soften the sorrow for the dead with the hope of meeting in heavenly Zion. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 10 We pour tears, like quiet drops of rain on the graves of our relatives, we pray with hope, we cry out with hope: tell us, Lord, that you have forgiven them, tell us that you have accepted them into the abode of joy, give a mysterious revelation to our spirit, so that we may sing : Alleluia.

Ikos 10 Turning my eyes into the distance, onto the path of life I have traveled, I see many who have already fallen asleep from my first day to this day, who have served me for my good. I pray for them and, repaying the debt of love, I cry: Our Father, have mercy on all my well-wishers and benefactors. Our Father, grant Thy glory to my parents and neighbors. Our Father, reward those who watched over my baby’s cradle. Our Father, save those who preached Your Word to me. Our Father, glorify before the Angels those who taught me to love You. Our Father, give joy to those who taught me by the holy examples of their lives. Our Father, please with hidden manna those who served me in difficult days. Our Father, there will be no end to Your Kingdom, may the departed enter into Your joy. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 11 Death, where is your sting? where is your victory? where is your former darkness and fear? You are desired from now on, you are inseparably united with God, you are great peace, you are a mysterious Saturday. The Apostle cries out: “The desire of the imam is to die and be with Christ.” Moreover, looking at death as a guide to life, we call: Alleluia.

Ikos 11 The dead will be resurrected and those in their tombs will rise, and all earthly beings will rejoice, for spiritual, glorified, light-corruptible bodies will already awaken. Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord: “Clothe yourself with sinews, cover yourself with skin, arise from the hoary times of the past. You have been redeemed by the Blood of the Son of God, you have been quickened by His death, the light of the Resurrection is above you!” Our Father, day by day You have revealed Your goodness. Our Father, now reveal to them the entire abyss of Your perfections. Our Father, You cheered them with the warmth and aroma of spring. Our Father, show them the eternal spring of incorruption. Our Father, You shone upon them with the light of the sun and the silence of the moon. Our Father, may they see the glory of the fiery angelic Faces. Our Father, You have delighted them with the beauty of the rising and setting of the sun, so that they may see the light of Your eternal Divinity. Our Father, may every soul be enlightened, like the morning star, the herald of the dawn. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 12 Flesh and blood will not inherit the Kingdom of God. As long as we live in the flesh, we are separated from Christ; If we do not die, we do not come to life for eternity, it is fitting for this corruptible body to be clothed with incorruptibility and for this lifeless body to shine forth with immortality, and thus in the light of an unevening day to sing: Alleluia.

Ikos 12 We look forward to a joyful meeting with the Lord, we wait for the clear dawn of the resurrection, we wait for the awakening from the graves of our loved ones and the revival in the splendid beauty of dead lives. We celebrate the coming transformation of all creation and cry out to our Creator: Our Father, who created the world for the triumph of joy and goodness. Our Father, raise us from the depths of sin to holiness. Our Father, let the dead reign in the midst of renewed existence. Our Father, may they shine like lights in the heavens on the day of their glory. Our Father, may the Lamb [[Divine] be an unquenchable light to them. Our Father, grant that we too may celebrate Easter incorruption with them. Our Father, unite the dead and the living in endless joy. Our Father, may we not be separated from Your servants, whom we remember here. Our Father, Unspeakable Love, give rest to your departed servants.

Kontakion 13 O Most Merciful Father Without Beginning, who desires salvation for all, sends down the Son to the perishing and pours out the Life-giving Spirit! Have mercy, forgive and save those close to us and all those who have fallen from time immemorial, and visit them with your intercession. Let us, together with them, sing to You, God the Savior, a victorious song: Alleluia! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

(This kontakion is read three times, then ikos 1 and kontakion 1.)

First buildings

The Church of Elijah the Prophet on Obydensky Lane is a special place.
This amazingly beautiful building fits organically into the surrounding landscape, ennobling and aestheticizing the surrounding area. The earliest Christian church in Rus', back in Kyiv, was dedicated to Saint Elijah. The Obydensky Church, which is one of the parish organizations of the capital's Orthodox diocese, is also associated with it. The history of the building is unusual and interesting. After all, it belongs to the oldest buildings of ancient Moscow. The first temple of Elijah the Prophet in Obydensky Lane was built of wood literally in one day or, in Old Russian, “obyden”. There were craftsmen in Rus' back then! This happened during a period of severe drought, and the people, who always firmly believed in their beloved patron, relied on his help even now. The construction dates back to around 1592, and the area itself was called Skorodomnaya. Here, once upon a time, timber was floated on water, and Muscovites, taking advantage of the convenient crossing and delivery of materials, quickly built homes for themselves in order to later move their houses to more convenient areas of the city. The Temple of Elijah the Prophet in Obydensky Lane also gave the name to the streets leading to it - Iliinsky. They were renamed to their current name later.

Interior decoration and frescoes

But the main beauty of the Yaroslavl Church of Elijah the Prophet is hidden inside. The perfectly preserved frescoes delight the eyes with bright colors. In the central hall, the frescoes are executed in 6 tiers, each of which tells about the lives of the saints, as well as Elijah the Prophet himself. The frescoes were created over decades and were completed by 1716.

In addition, the interior interior is complemented by wooden carvings. Multi-tiered iconostases are also decorated with carvings. The central one contains more than 100 icons and is made in the Moscow Baroque style. The famous master painter Fyodor Zubov had a hand in creating icons here.

The church was built according to classical Byzantine models and has a cross in its plan. Inside there are pillars connected by arches. Pillars divide the temple into naves, over the intersections of which there are domes. Here the domes are built in the shape of onions. There are five of them in total - the tallest one in the center and four smaller ones on the sides. The green color of the onions indicates that the temple is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Galleries surround the temple on three sides, the entrance on the western side is central.

The bell tower adjacent to the temple was built in a tent style, which was banned after the construction of the church. In terms of plan, it is a figure of eight. On the second tier there are special small windows for better ringing resonance. The composition of the temple is asymmetrical, so you just have to look from a different angle and you will see a different architecture. It is especially worth noting the light, openwork, but at the same time majestic, chapel, built in the shape of an octagon, placed on a quadrangular base.

Second birth

At the very beginning of the 18th century, the old church building was demolished. A stone one was built in its place. The current Church of Elijah the Prophet in Moscow has largely retained its ancient architectural appearance. Funds for its construction were provided by Gabriel and Vasily Derevnin. In memory of them, marble memorial plaques were installed in the church. Further construction work continued into the next century. The building was renovated and new chapels were added. Since then, religious services have been held here continuously. And in difficult times for the House of God, when the authorities wanted to close it, the parishioners did not allow this to happen. For example, about 4 thousand people defended the church in 1930.
