The Temple of the Prophet Elijah in Obydensky Lane was built in the Baroque architectural style. It is located near the Church of Christ the Savior. The construction of the temple took place with the support of the architect I. Zarudny in 1702. The church is quite popular among Orthodox believers. It is visited daily by a fairly large number of parishioners. Like many churches, this temple has its own secret.

Story

In the Synodikon (memorial book at the temple), compiled under Patriarch Job in 1589-1607, the church is already mentioned. “The Legend of Abraham Palitsyn” can also serve as evidence: it describes the events of 1587-1618. In particular, it is said that Prince Dmitry Pozharsky at the end of August 1612, before the battle with the Poles, prayed in the ordinary temple of the Prophet Elijah.

The very name “Routine” is associated with the words “One Day”: it is believed that the wooden structure was erected in just a day.

In 1702, a stone one was erected on the site of a wooden building. At first they wanted to make it based on the model of the cathedral church of the Nikolo-Perervinsky Monastery, but due to lack of funds, instead of a two-story church, a one-story one was erected. Inside the church, a marble slab with the names of the creators, the Derevnin brothers, is still preserved .

In 1706, an antimension (fabric with a sewn-in piece of holy relics) was transferred to the Church of Elijah the Prophet - it was placed in the chapel of Simeon the God-Receiver and Anna the Prophetess. The chapel itself was badly damaged in the fire, but was later restored. In 1819, the second chapel was completed and consecrated - in honor of the apostles Peter and Paul.

In the middle and second half of the 19th century, the appearance of the temple changed and has remained in this form to this day. Many prominent merchants donated money for the reconstruction: the merchant of the first guild Konshin, the Tretyakov sisters and their brother. Konshin also became the initiator and trustee of the parish school, which began work in 1875.

With the advent of Soviet power, the position of the temple was shaken, but did not change: it was supposed to be closed in 1930, but the believers defended it. In 1941, a second order was signed, but the outbreak of war “saved” the church. In June 1944, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God “Unexpected Joy” was transferred from the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord in Sokolniki to the Church of Elijah the Prophet, which remained there forever.

In 1973, Solzhenitsyn and Svetlova got married in the church, and later they baptized their children here.

  5. Church singing for children.

You can also book a tour in the church or visit the library, which has more than 10 thousand books.

The temple was never closed and became a refuge for believers during persecution

The church has been operating for three hundred years. This distinguishes it from many other Christian churches that were closed on the initiative of the Bolshevik government.

Of course, the atheists tried to put pressure on the parish and take away the building. But local believers acted in concert and stood up to defend the temple of Elijah the Prophet.

Believers did not allow the Soviet authorities to close the temple.

The first attempts to close the temple occurred in 1930. The last attempt of the Soviet authorities, known to us, did not have time to come true, as the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War prevented it.

Interior of the Temple of Elijah the Prophet

The Church of Elijah the Prophet in Obydensky Lane has become a refuge for believers of closed parishes in Moscow. As the last stronghold, the church on Ostozhenka absorbed an army of orphaned believers, nourished them with spirit and preserved the traditions of past centuries.

Many parishes united here, so Orthodox Christianity continued to live in the unfriendly world of atheism.

Shrines

Among all the shrines of the Church of Elijah the Prophet of God, the main one is considered to be a copy (copy) of the icon of the Mother of God “Unexpected Joy”. The name is associated with a story written in the second half of the 17th century about a sinner who prayed at the icon of the Mother of God, and then committed atrocities.
One day he saw the Virgin and Child live, but there were severe sores on the child’s hands and feet: because of the sins of man, Christ was crucified again and again. The sinner repented of committing evil, but the Infant did not agree to forgive him, and then the Mother of God also lay down at the feet of her son. Only later did Christ forgive the sinner. The icon itself depicts this scene: a sinner prays to the Hodegetria icon of the Mother of God, the Mother of God holds in her hands a son covered with sores. They pray to the icon to receive spiritual strength and get rid of negativity and quarrels, to receive the desired thing or to find lost people. Pregnant mothers can ask for an easy birth and healthy children.

Also in the temple of Elijah the Prophet of God are:

  1. Icon of the Mother of God “Vladimir”: they ask her for help in finding the true path, strengthening faith and spirit, protection from bad thoughts, and healing from physical illnesses;
  2. Icon of the Mother of God “Theodorovskaya”: it will help you get pregnant and give birth easily, will bring happiness and love to the family, will help you get rid of diseases;
  3. Icon of Our Lady of Kazan: helps in finding the right path and correcting the consequences of a wrong decision, gives support and support in trouble, strengthens families and protects soldiers in war;
  4. Icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands: people turn to him for help in making the right decision, strengthening determination, getting rid of stupid and harmful thoughts, and healing from illnesses;
  5. Icon “Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah”: God’s prophet Elijah lived in the 9th century BC. and is the most revered Old Testament saint in Orthodoxy. He lived during the time of King Ahab and his wife Jezebel, who established the cult of Baal and Ashtoreth in the state. The prophet tried several times to reason with the king by performing miracles and even won the “test of faith” with the priests of the cult, whom Ilya executed himself. After the victory, Ilya first went into the desert, and then ascended to heaven alive. Among the Slavs, Ilya was considered the lord of thunder, lightning and rain, was responsible for the fertility of the earth and rode a chariot of fire. Today Ilya is the patron of the air force and airborne troops;
  6. Icon of Sergius of Radonezh with a particle of his relics: one of the most revered Russian saints, who lived in the 14th century and became famous for his meek disposition, desire for solitude and performed miracles. Founder of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra;
  7. Icon of St. Seraphim of Sarov with a particle of his relics: also a revered saint who lived in the second half of the 18th - first half of the 19th century. He became famous for living alone in the forest for a long time, eating grass for several years and standing on a stone in prayer for a thousand days. People who came to him saw that the saint was guarded by a huge bear, and forest animals fed from him;
  8. An ark with particles of the relics of several saints: it is also located in the temple.

The Temple of Elijah the Prophet was erected in one day and since then has been called “ordinary”

The place where the Temple of Elijah the Prophet was built was not previously intended for long-term construction. That's what they called him - Skorod. Houses were usually built here by those whose homes had burned down. Why exactly here? Simply the proximity of water simplified the delivery of building materials.

A wooden temple was built in Skorodom in honor of the prophet Elijah. The time spent on the construction of the building is incredible - just a day, as they would say then - “ordinary”, and therefore the temple was often called “ordinary”.

This is where the following street names have their roots:

  • Ilyinsky Lane;
  • 1st and 2nd Obydensky lane.

History has not exactly recorded exactly when this building was built. It is possible that we are talking about 1592.

The building is beautifully painted on the outside, but the interior is especially stunning.

Today, the Temple of Elijah the Prophet still looks fresh, as if it had only been erected in the evening. Its façade is carefully maintained, which is why the building always looks well-groomed.

The Church of Elijah the Prophet stands out primarily for its sharp bell tower, vaguely reproducing the architectural traditions of the Kremlin. The lower part of the building from the outside is quite simple and slightly reminiscent of typical public buildings from the times of the Soviet Union.

One of the most noticeable features of the Temple of Elijah the Prophet is its colors. The combination of yellow walls and green roofs creates a beautiful, festive contrast. Thin white lines on the patterned frame add expressiveness to the overall composition.

Inside, the building looks much more magnificent and rich. The luxurious decoration delights with its warmth and aesthetics. The images are drawn very realistically, so that sometimes the saints seem to come to life. The spacious interior space gives a feeling of the sky above your head and makes you think about the spiritual.

At the temple there are:

  • Sunday School;
  • Library.

A distinctive feature of this church is the decoration of the interior, especially the icons, using floral arrangements.

The temple is actively engaged in floristry to decorate icons.

Excursions around the temple and pilgrimage trips are regularly held for those interested.

Clear actively participates in social and youth programs.
